Latin America has a worldwide reputation as the great producer and distributor of telenovelas. Now, telenovela market players are coming out with entertainment formats, some of which already have local versions in different countries around the world

Caracol’s original format La pista, already has its first international adaptation: the Italian version produced by Endemol, which premiered in late March in the primetime of Italy’s RAI 1. “It’s an important achievement for an entertainment format created by Caracol in Colombia to be in primetime in a market such as Italy,” said Lisette Osorio, VP of International Sales of Caracol TV. Another important entertainment format of Caracol is El desafío, already in its 11th season in Colombia, which is now being produced in Morocco. Mexican network Azteca acquired the format and produced it locally under the title La isla, and it’s currently in second season.

In early 2013, Televisa Internacional set a strategy to become an important supplier of entertainment formats. Led by Televisa Europe, the strategy included a partnership with Spain’s La Competencia. The company has been launching five new formats every MipTV and Mipcom, totaling 15 new projects. ¿Puedes con 100?, for example, has become an international hit: in Mexico it kicked off its second season on Televisa, it airs with great results on Peru’s América TV, soon will have versions in Spain and Russia, and has been optioned in 20 countries. For this MipTV the company is introducing Dolphins With The

Stars (70min.), a celebrity show where 10 stars train with dolphins in a set that will become a dolphin aquarium; Mad Mall (30-50min.), a comedy and hidden camera format with pranks to real customers of a shopping mall; Project Adam & Eve (60min.), a reality show where five women and five men live together in a cosmetic center to undergo physical and emotional changes; a contest format and a game show. It’s worth noting that Mad Mall, even before being introduced to MipTV, was chosen to be produced in Spain and very likely in Mexico. Televisa is no longer just an important supplier of fictions, but also a big player in entertainment

formats. Testament of this is the fact that, for a second time, the company has been invited to participate in the week of pitches held in London prior to Mipcom and MipTV, where large players like Endemol, FremantleMedia, Shine, Banijay, and others participate.

S trengthening the catalog With the same goal of adding entertainment formats to its catalog, Telemundo Internacional signed an agreement with Spain’s Reset TV, owned by Tony Cruz and Josep María Mainat, which has already generated several formats, among them El artista. More than 40 international clients will be invited to the recordings of the show, with the intention of enticing them to acquire the format. “We want this great format to be reproduced in many countries,” said Santana.

This project began over a year ago. “We’ve been having conversations with Reset TV to co-create a blockbuster format, bigger and better than Operación triunfo was back then,” said Marcos Santana, President of Telemundo Internacional. The show is set to premiere in September or October of 2014 in the primetime of Telemundo.

Azteca, is bringing to MipTV La academia kids, a musical reality show where kids live and learn together, with their mothers also joining them at La academia. Chilean formats are also noteworthy: the ones from TVN continue gaining ground. Calle 7 has already sold in Paraguay, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama and in Ecuador, where it currently is on its fourth season on the TC channel. Additionally, Apuesto por ti, currently on its third season on TVN, was sold in Peru and Ecuador and optioned in Spain and Italy. Ernesto Lombardi,

Similarly, Canal 13, gained notoriety with Mundos opuestos, which entered the U.S. general market and premiered this January on SyFy under the title Opposite Worlds. Televisa presents original and adapted content Catering to the international market, Televisa is offering three telenovelas: El color de la pasión, Quiero amarte and Lo que la vida me robó, the latter being the most watched telenovela in Mexico in the past months

Starring Karime Lozano and Cristian de la Fuente and produced by Carlos Moreno, Quiero amarte, combines the two network approaches of bringing original and adapted stories. It’s a remake Imperio de cristal (1994). Additionally it reinforces the product placement model, having Nestlé’s Nescafé brand as its main sponsor. “From Imperio de cristal we took the family plot and added an original spin by weaving the plot into the world of coffee, set in Chiapas. We mixed classic melodrama with other elements to make the story current,” said Martha Carrillo, who co-wrote and adapted the story with Cristina Martínez.

When Lo que la vida me robo premiered on Televisa’s Channel 2, expectations on the part of executives and producer Angelli Nesma, were for this story to be deserving of primetime, and it was: it not only is an audience leader in Mexico, but it also transcended TV and its digital presence has been the ideal complement for executives, who decided to extend the plot. “I said we wouldn’t extend the series, but they asked us for more episodes and we’ll do it. We’re adding 50 new episodes, but we won’t add anything out of place; we are continuing each character’s story that still have something to offer and that will satisfy the audience,” said Nesma.

The producer of this remake of Bodas de odio, now starring Angelique Boyer and Sebastián Rulli, said the novela’s exclusive mobile app, “allows the story reach new audiences and be at the forefront of technology, and it allows us to get close to our target. This helps us in many ways, allowing people to admire the characters even more.”

El color de la pasión, is a recent Televisa production that has cleared the path for other stories the network will bring to the screen in the coming months. It’s an original story by Roberto Gómez Fernández, with screenplay by José Cuauhtémoc Blanco and María del Carmen Peña.

“It’s a story never before done on television. Writers had it locked away for more than six years and they still have about 25% left to write. It will come out to 120 hours or about 24 weeks on the air and will not be easy to extend,” said Gómez Fernández.

Caracol offers La viuda negra to European buyers Caracol’s main product for this MipTV is La viuda negra, coming off a great performance in the U.S. The company’s other big production, La ronca de oro, has been leading Colombian primetime since its debut

After that remarkable debut, it continued to boost UniMás’ ratings, beating Telemundo’s Camelia, la texana in Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34 (period of March 10th - 16th). This RTI production for Televisa and Caracol Televisión is the controversial story of Griselda Blanco, the woman who dominated drug trafficking in Miami in the 70’s and early 80’s. Telefe products conquer audiences around the world Some versions of Telefe telenovelas will be watched on screens around the world this year. The Chilean adaptation of Dulce amor, for example, recently premiered on TVN, with the Colombian and Mexican version premiering soon. Simultaneously, Telefe is seeking to strengthen co-production alliances both domestically and internationally

Latin America continues to be the main market for Telefe’s products. Outside of this “natural” territory, demand in the Middle East has been on the rise. Also Telefe just reached an important milestone in the U.S.: Televisa optioned Cris Morena Group’s format Aliados to be produced for the Anglo market. Other deals are said to have been struck at Natpe, but no details have been disclosed. All this progress demonstrates that Telefe’s family- and youthoriented products and yielding good results, both domestically and internationally. “We have high expectations for this MipTV, because we have great products such as Sres. papis, Somos familia and Taxxi, amores cruzados,” told

Telemundo titles gain ground on digital platforms The Telemundo Internacional Digital Media division has seen significant growth. Over 27 of its titles are present on several platforms, including Netflix, DramaFever, Viewster and DailyMotion Luis Daniel Capriles

The relationship with Netflix remains strong and its contract is being renewed for a third year. Telemundo launched U.S. operations with DramaFever and already has nine telenovelas from TNV Chile (distributed by Telemundo Internacional). Viewster handles the Telemundo catalog for U.S. Hispanic, Mexico and Spain. The company also added to VEO several productions of Televisa, and is currently in conversations to add fictions from TVN Chile. These Chilean productions, pending negotiations, could be part of Hulu in the U.S. Telemundo is also working to extend its relationships with DramaFever and Viewster, and to sell series to key platforms in Russia. Digital platforms have experienced significant growth globally, but

The digital business uses several models. Netflix, for example, follows the subscription model, while Viewster and DailyMotion have a mixed approach: they offer the product for free and insert ads or charge a monthly fee for commercial-free content.

With France TV, Telemundo has developed online platforms in French. Impaktu is in charge of monetizing the content or traffic of Telemundo.com from Latin America, inserting local ads in each country. Another important achievement is the acquisition of catch-up rights associated to top channels in Latin America. Caracol Digital, for example, acquired this additional

Series continue to be audiences’ favorite. Telemundo is re-editing several of its titles into short format in order to adjust them to the requirements of the VOD service. Mi corazón insiste and Corazón valiente, for example, are fictions that have been re-edited to less than 80 episodes.

Some of the most popular titles with renewed contracts include La reina del sur, which has been very successful on Netflix and on Quaxar, the app used by Telemundo to program content for Facebook. El señor de los cielos and La diosa coronada also renewed their contracts. Caso cerrado and Decisiones are episodic series that have also conquered audiences online.
