Although the main product of Latin American distributors continues to be the telenovela, other content is on the rise, including action series for primetime and late night, game shows, talent shows and other entertainment formats

Latin American action series are stories that fall somewhere between a telenovela and a traditional series. These are productions of 40 to 80 episodes that take on strong subjects such as drug trafficking. Caracol Televisión is without a doubt a pioneer in this type of product: it started in 2006 with Sin tetas no hay paraíso, and since then has been producing similar stories every year. They come to this Natpe Europe with two series: Fugitivos and Tiro de gracia. Tiro de gracia is the second co-production with Televisa, after La viuda negra. With these two products the Televisa catalog starts incorporating these Latin American action series that are captivating audiences all over the world. “With these co-productions

we’re are positioning us in a genre that is attracting new audiences. In an effort to consolidate our connection with this new audience, we decided to solidify our partnership with Caracol for the coming years,” said Fernando Pérez Gavilán, VP of Televisa Internacional. Telemundo Internacional also has this type of series. Jesús Torres, VP of Programming and Content of Telemundo Media, refers to them as ‘superseries’ and sees them as the result of American influence over the Hispanic fiction, creating a product that is shorter than a telenovela, of the highest quality, and with a different way to tell the story, appropriate for the 10pm hour. Some titles include La reina del sur, El señor de los cielos (in its second season), and Camelia la texana.

Latin American distributors are increasingly offering more entertainment formats. Caracol Televisión offers Do re millones, El desafío and La pista. The Italian version of the latter, produced by Endemol for RAI’s primetime, has been extremely successful and is receiving a lot of interest from other territories across Europe. Recognizing this trend, Televisa devised a strategy just over a year ago to position itself in this genre. The strategy, led by Televisa Europa, contemplates the partnership with Spain’s La Competencia and the launch of 10 products per year. The company is presenting five entertainment formats at this Natpe Europe.

With the same goal of adding entertainment formats to its catalog, Telemundo Internacional signed an agreement with Spain’s Reset TV, owned by Tony Cruz and Josep María Mainat, which has already generated several formats, among them El artista. New projects arrive form all corners of the region. Telefe Internacional, for example, has in its catalog Justo a riempo, a family show where contestants test their skills in a series of original games with large prizes. Azteca, is bringing to Natpe Europe La academia kids, a musical reality show where kids live and learn together, with their mothers also joining them at La academia.

New Telefe hit Camino al amor is presented to buyers at Natpe Europe Telefe attends Natpe Europe with a product that has been successful in Argentina: Camino al amor, the new love story by the creators of Dulce amor

Camino al amor (120x60´) premiered in Argentina in late May in primetime (10pm) with a 21.3 rating and a share of 45% (Ibope), numbers that place it as the most watched fiction is its timeslot. “I’d be satisfied if Camino al amor performed 20-30% lower than Dulce amor,” said before the premiere its producer Enrique Estevanéz, President of production house LC Acción. The product brought a great audience to the already successful primetime of Telefe. “The timeslot occupied by Camino al amor is a kind of commitment, but it’s already a great commitment making another telenovela after Dulce amor,” added Estevanéz. Dulce amor was not only a success in ratings, but also in international sales. The finished product was

sold in Panama, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and its format was adapted in Chile by TVN, in Colombia by Caracol, and in Mexico by Televisa; all important producers of telenovelas in Latin America. The Chilean version, entitled El amor lo manejo yo, has quickly positioned itself as one of the most watched shows in primetime. The Colombian adaptation, which maintained the original title, has not premiered yet. The Mexican version will premiere soon. Dulce amor has also been optioned in the Middle East and Turkey.

It’s a love story written by Estevanéz himself and Marta Betoldi. The plot revolves around a couple that separates and reunites years later: Malena, now mother of an 11 year-old boy, and Rocco, who had moved to Mexico but returns to Argentina after his father suffers a heart attack. Both will discover that their passion is still alive, but will suffer a long struggle before they can again celebrate their love. It stars Sebastián Estevanéz and Carina Zampini, the same leading couple in Dulce amor. They are joined by Juan Darthés, Mariano Martínez, Sofía Reca, María Eugenia Suárez, and Sol Estevanéz, among others.

The main offer of Telefe International for Natpe Europe is complemented by two family sitcoms: Sres. papis (Telefe, 150x60’), starring Luciano Castro, Joaquín Furriel, Luciano Cáceres and Peto Menahem, premiered in January at 11pm with a 36% share; and Somos familia (Telefe and LC Acción, 180x60’), with Ana María Orozco and Gustavo Bermúdez, which airs daily at 9pm and averages a share of 32%. Los hombres también lloran (40x60´) is a romantic comedy based on the Argentinean film No sos vos, soy yo. Taking this movie and making it into a series was the idea of Juana Uribe, VP of Canal Caracol, who was also responsible for Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal, La ronca de oro and many other groundbreaking projects. The comedy is shot with the latest technology and will star Carolina Gómez, Mónica Lopera and Róbinson Díaz.

Fugitivos (40x60´), of CMO Producciones, -same producers of the hit La ronca de oro-, is the story of a happily maried civil engineer who is framed in the murder of his friend’s wife, forcinig him to break out from prison. It’s an action series with romance and suspense. It was shot on film on spectacular locations in Colombia. It stars Taliana Vargas (Rafael Orozco el ídolo) and Emmanuel Esparza (Mentiras perfectas).

After the success of the Italian version of La pista –which premiered in RAI’s primetime as the most watched show in its timeslot-, channels and producers from other territories are exploring bringing the format to their respective markets. The Italian version is produced by Endemol, which also acquired the rights to adapt it for Spain, France, Portugal and Turkey.

After Spain, Eastern and Central Europe is the largest market of Televisa Europa. “Our product occupies many timeslots on several networks in the region. Markets such as Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, and Albania, continue to be very active. Others such as Poland have even grown and we’ve seen a return to Bulgarian screens. All distributors have felt the impact of Turkish telenovelas, but this product is at the end of its cycle and we’ve held on and even grown in some territories. We keep pushing our finished telenovelas and, since last year, also our entertainment and fiction formats,” said Claudia Sahab, Director of Televisa Internacional for Europe.

La viuda negra is a new kind of product in the Televisa catalog: a long-running series with daily episodes in primetime or late fringe. These are strong stories with high doses of action, based on books or real events. La viuda negra tells the story of Griselda Blanco, the woman who introduced cocaine to the U.S. It’s an RTI production for Caracol and Televisa. It just finished a successful run in the U.S. on UniMás. La Gata is produced by Nathalie Lartilleux (Corazón indomable) and stars by Daniel Arenas and Maite Perroni, “a well-known actress in Eastern Europe,” according to Sahab.

For this market Televisa brings: the celebrity show Dolphins with the stars (70´); the comedy and hidden camera format Mad mall (30-50´); the reality Project Adam & Eve (60´); the quiz show Push It! (30-40´); the game show The wacky old games (60-70´); and the

already popular reality Bailando por un sueño (8x210´). “Bailando por un sueño, is a format that has worked well in Eastern Europe and is already in its 14th season in Romania,” pointed out Sahab.
