GOOD GROUND FOR GREAT PROJECTS Which is better – life in town or in the country? Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm offers the best of both worlds. And it does so in the most popular and fastest-growing part of Germany – the metropolitan region of Munich and Upper Bavaria. Pfaffenhofen is a well-established and growing town. It offers a solid infrastructure where (almost) everything we need for our daily lives is within easy reach: schools, medical facilities, shops, a cinema, restaurants … And for everything else Bavaria’s cities – including Munich, Augsburg, Ingolstadt and Regensburg – are not far away, with the A9 and Munich airport providing top transport links. However, living in Pfaffenhofen also means being surrounded by nature and open spaces, with the opportunity to make social contacts if required. The reason for this is that with its 26,000 inhabitants, Pfaffenhofen is big enough to allow everyone to develop their own personal lifestyle, but not so big that people feel anonymous. Ready for the future Above all life in Pfaffenhofen will continue to be good in the future. There are lots of solid reasons for this: thanks to its environmentally friendly urban development Pfaffenhofen is ready for the future. Green technologies are developed and applied here. There is a long and pioneering organic tradition in the production, processing and marketing of foodstuffs. Urban planning is always on a human scale. Wherever possible local residents play a decisive and confident part in determining the future of the municipality. And above all Pfaffenhofen offers a secure environment for both young and old, generation after generation. An award-winning place to live in All in all: Pfaffenhofen is an "award-winning place to live in". This is impressively confirmed by the fact that the town has received the LivCom Award as the "world’s most liveable small town". It’s what makes Pfaffenhofen good ground for great projects and the perfect place for all those looking for a healthy environment in which to bring up their children. Our town is also ideal for people wishing to develop their lives in a place which is both exciting and restful, and all those who finally want to put down roots somewhere. Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm – "Good ground for great projects".
FROM OUR HISTORY
Excavations indicate that there were already people here 6,500 years ago. In the eighth century monks established a settlement here and gave it the name of "PfaffenhÜfe". Four centuries later a count founded the market of Pfaffenhofen. In 1388 Pfaffenhofen was partially destroyed in the "War of the Cities". The city wall was then built to protect the town, and in 1438 Pfaffenhofen received its town charter. The Thirty Years’ War brought the plague, and only 700 inhabitants survived.
12
The arrival of the railway in 1865 and electrification around the year 1900 significantly boosted the development of the town. At the time it had around 4,000 inhabitants. After the Second World War many refugees arrived and the population doubled. In the 1970s the area of the town also grew, as it absorbed surrounding villages which had previously been separate. Today Pfaffenhofen is a prosperous and vibrant town and a great place to live in.
A TOWN ON A HUMAN SCALE – READY FOR THE FUTURE
14
URBAN DEVELOPMENT– CONTROLLED, ON A HUMAN SCALE, CLOSE TO NATURE
16
At present Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm and its 63 surrounding villages have a population of 26,000. The municipal area covers 92.6 km², 85 % of which consists of woods and farmland. More and more people are coming to appreciate the quality of life in Pfaffenhofen. The number of residents is regularly increased by new arrivals and births – our target is moderate growth of around 0.5 % per year. The geographical area of the town itself in particular is not to expand further. In terms of the economic use of land Pfaffenhofen is a model municipality. In 2012 we created an integrated urban development concept, in consultation with experts and local residents. This lays down the criteria for controlled urban development over the next 15 years in line with the needs of people and the environment.
THE HEART OF PFAFFENHOFEN With an area of 15,000 m² and historic facades, the town square has the look of an Italian piazza. This has been all the more noticeable since the square was redesigned and closed to traffic.
18
A RICH HISTORY This is represented by the historic facades of the old town, the office building of the Mßllerbräu brewery and the Hungerturm tower. By the way: during the tour of Pfaffenhofen our guides tell fascinating stories and interesting historical facts. They also provide a view of a location which was long kept secret: a communications bunker from the Cold War.
THE ECOQUARTIER – A SUSTAINABLE DISTRICT In terms of settlement policy this model project, which is currently being developed on an area of 22 ha in the eastern section of town, is unique in Germany. It combines sustainable living, work and agriculture. 100 % regenerative energies, building materials free from toxins and a mix of social groups give the ecoQuartier its pioneering character.
20
NATURE IN URBAN SURROUNDINGS Pfaffenhofen was the host of the garden exhibition "Nature in Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm 2017". In the summer of 2017 more than 330,000 visitors experienced this "hands-on garden exhibition". Its legacy is an increase in the city's green area and greater quality of life for all residents.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT PUT INTO PRACTICE – THAT'S MY PFAFFENHOFEN
22
SHARING INFORMATION,
24
That’s MY Pfaffenhofen! Many local residents can proudly state that they have made an active contribution to their town and its social life. The "PAF and YOU" programme has further activated civic dialogue, participation and involvement, and made these emblematic for our town. On the principle of "sharing information, dialogue and decisions", citizens can become involved in all information and discussion events, ideas competitions, workshops and civic conferences relating to important town affairs.
DIALOGUE, DECISIONS The core of the action programme is the "pafunddu.de" civic engagement portal. This combines the requirements of modern democratic communal living with the latest developments in the information society. The civic forum makes it possible for local residents to exchange ideas and suggestions in an uncomplicated way, and integrate them on an interactive map. Pfaffenhofen’s associations and organisations publish their reports online – unfiltered and at first hand. The most interesting articles are combined by a web-to-print process into a printed citizens’ magazine, which is distributed regularly to all households.
LIVE FROM THE TOWN COUNCIL
26
Pfaffenhofen attaches great value to having a transparent town hall. The civic centre has convenient opening hours. In video broadcasts the mayor regularly informs residents about current developments. Pfaffenhofen is a pioneer in streaming its public council meetings live. Free Wi-Fi is of course available in the town centre and at the open-air pool. This is how civic participation 2.0 works ‌
PROVEN SUSTAINABILITY – SUCCESS BASED ON AN ORGANIC TRADITION AND GREEN TECHNOLOGIES
28
SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS It’s no accident that the company which – in the opinion of consumers – is the most sustainable in Germany is based in Pfaffenhofen: HiPP baby food. HiPP is one of the world’s largest processors of organically produced foodstuffs.
WE HAVE AN ORGANIC TRADITION We are committed to the organic principle, which places us under an obligation to ensure clean water, clean air and unpolluted soil in the future too. And by the way, Pfaffenhofen is also a pharmaceutical
SUCCESS BASED ON SUSTAINABILITY In terms of sustainability Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm is one of Germany's leading towns. This position was confirmed when we won first prize in the 2013 German Sustainability Awards, while in 2011 we received a special prize for "environmental best practice" in the LivCom Awards.

centre, with more than 4 billion tablets a year, in particular for reducing blood pressure, produced at the plant of Japan’s Daiichi-Sankyo Corporation, while Stada produces its Mobilat ointment here. A TOP LOCATION FOR SUCCESS On the subject of companies: in the rankings
the district of Pfaffenhofen regularly comes top in terms of business dynamism. We are well known for providing the ideal conditions for both companies and their employees. As part of the Munich metropolitan region we are at the heart of a major growth area. In other words, the ideal place for those who wish to grow with their company ‌
ONE STEP AHEAD IN CLIMATE PROTECTION 32
Thanks to our innovative enterprises Pfaffenhofen has developed into a centre for green technologies. The biomass heating plant is an outstanding example of this, generating heating, electricity, cooling and steam from local wood chips. Thanks to this facility Pfaffenhofen was the first German municipality to achieve the Kyoto Protocol’s climate protection target as far back as 2001. STOP CO2 – COUNT ME IN In terms of climate protection Pfaffenhofen will continue to play a pioneering role. In 2012 an integrated climate protection concept was developed, with the involvement of many local citizens. The ambitious target is to reduce CO2 emissions by more than half – to 3 tonnes per inhabitant – by the year 2030. With its current 6.6 tonnes Pfaffenhofen is already well below the national average of 9.8 tonnes. One major contributory factor is regenerative energies. All the electricity for municipal facilities comes from hydroelectric sources, while publicly owned solar power is produced by the solar carport of the civic energy cooperative.
The town's farmers’ market offers fresh products from the region, combined with real quality of life. Pfaffenhofen is by tradition a centre for the production, processing and marketing of healthy foodstuffs.
FRESH FROM 34
THE REGION WHERE THE BEER GROWS
Pfaffenhofen is surrounded by a landscape which is unique within Europe. Hop fields are the characteristic feature of the distinctive Hallertau landscape – the world's largest hop-producing area. All the ingredients for Bavaria’s world-famous beer are available right here: clean water, barley and hops. This is why the town once contained no less than 11 breweries, two of which are still active at the present day.
A SECURE ENVIRONMENT FOR GENERATIONS – A PARADISE FOR YOUNG AND OLD, THE STRONG AND THE WEAK
36
SHARING GOOD FORTUNE Pfaffenhofen is fortunate: no major natural disasters, very little crime, a wellbalanced social structure and near full employment. However, even here there are vulnerable people who require our solidarity. Accordingly we are committed to supporting the very young, the very old and families, in line with our target of being a paradise for both young and old, the strong and the weak. AN INTACT COMMUNITY Many committed local residents make an active contribution to “their” Pfaffenhofen and their fellow citizens. The dial-a-bus service is only one example of this: at weekends adult drivers make sure that young people get to their parties and back home again safely. By the way, the dial-a-bus service was the idea of our Young People's Parliament. PFAFFENHOFEN – INTERNATIONAL AND INTERCULTURAL Pfaffenhofen is also a meeting place for different cultures, with people from more than 80 countries worldwide making up the town's population. And they have made Pfaffenhofen a lot more colourful …
38
40
EVERYTHING FOR YOUNG AND OLD
Pfaffenhofen is a great place for all generations, with no shortage of day nursery and kindergarten places, all types of schools and (cultural) centres for young people, a highly active department for senior citizens, care facilities and multi-generation residences, excellent medical provision and the Ilmtal and Danuvius clinics.
VIBRANT PFAFFENHOFEN – QUALITY OF LIFE IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES
42
A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE The fact that our town won the 2011 LivCom Award as the "world’s most liveable small town" demonstrates the special quality of life it offers. The "Süddeutsche Zeitung" newspaper once referred to us as "The island of the blessed”, and "Focus" magazine wrote: "Are you looking for a better life? Then move to Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm."
44
A TOWN WITHOUT STRESS, IN THE COUNTRY BUT NOT PROVINCIAL This is our personal formula for the benefits of living in Pfaffenhofen.
A SMALL LEISURE-TIME PARADISE – RIGHT ON THE DOORSTEP For sport and fun there is a climbing hall, a skateboarding hall, an open-air pool and more than 60 sports clubs. And you're out in the countryside in no time, where cycling, jogging and hiking trails lead through a unique cultural landscape.
46
A CULTURAL HOTSPOT IN
48
THE REGION
With us culture has many faces: popular traditional events and "urban culture" at the cultural centre complement each other. Not to be forgotten are the many local residents who make their own enthusiastic artistic or cultural contribution.
CHURCH TOWER, MAYPOLE AND FAIR
These three features are typical of every Bavarian town, and of course Pfaffenhofen is no different. Our "Volksfest" fair in September is something like the "little brother of the Oktoberfest" – and without any clichés.
50
SECRET-SANTA TIME AND CHRISTMAS MAGIC In the magical time before Christmas people in Pfaffenhofen delight one another with surprise gifts. The illuminations in the town centre create a wonderful atmosphere.
