Imagine that a friend of yours heard that you were taking a psychology class. Your friend asks you. "Why are you wasting your time with that class? I never took a psych class but it seems like a waste of time. It seems like other fields are more important." Write a short dialogue where you either agree or disagree with your friend about the importance of psychology. In your dialogue, include at least two pieces of evidence that support your argument. Friend: I heard you are taking a psychology class.

Me: Yeah! Why?

Friend: Why are you wasting your time with that class? I never took a psych class but it seems like a waste of time. It seems like other fields are more important.

Me: You can think what you wish, but the psychology field has many different branches that are beneficial to society. In psychology, we have learned many different tools that could be used in the real world.

Friend: Like what?

Me: First, psychology has many different roots and main schools of thought. A few of them are behaviorism, cognitive, humanistic, and neuroscience.

Friend: Well, how does that make psychology more important than other fields?

Me: The main schools of thought look into many different aspects of the brain, behavior and other things of that nature. I think that it is very helpful to understand and know how people function, think, and act, especially because we all have to live together.

Friend: Okay. I see where you're coming from but I am not sure I can fully agree with you

Persuasive Essay About Psychology

Have you ever postponed something super important because you wanted to have fun on a Friday night? Convincing yourself "Oh, I'll just get it done tomorrow?" This action of putting off a task until the next day or a later time is called procrastination. Someone displaying procrastination would either be delaying their work for another job that they consider more important or distracting themselves with an activity that is more interesting. Many people believe that only disorganized or lazy people acquire or pick up this intrusive habit, but I disagree with this misconception. Productive people, too, occasionally lack the desire to get things done on time. Take for example myself; I have always struggled with this mannerism and even more...show more content...

The prefrontal cortex is what makes an individual decide to engage in a task. With that in mind, putting work off makes it easier for the limbic system to dominate and give immediate pleasure feelings which the brain prefers. In other words, people begin to manipulate this perception and enjoy the short–term effects because it becomes more satisfying not to complete the task. This habit can start to control how or when we choose to tend to our responsibilities (Spencer). I recognize this feeling on a daily basis. For example, there was a day that I decided I was going to study in the library as I would hopefully be more productive in that setting. However, as soon as I sat down I began to fiddle with everything I could get my hands on. From obnoxiously twirling my pencil to watching time–consuming YouTube videos, I wasn 't very productive, and as a result, I had to cram until two AM for an exam the next day. I had always known thatprocrastination was satisfying, and now with this new information that confirms that it feeds off of my "good" feelings based on my body 's anatomy. Moving on, I then researched how to recognize why myself and others procrastinate in the first place. The first reason people procrastinate is that they "become" perfectionists. As procrastination becomes a more common act, it can also bring about the action of perfectionism. Harold Taylor does a fantastic job at identifying perfectionism, along with other reasons

This year's U.S. News and World Report's top ranked universities in America: #1 Princeton University, #2 Harvard University, #3 University of Chicago. For many aspiring high school students, being admitted into these elite universities has become nothing less than an infatuation. However, many believe an elite education may actually have negative effects on young adults. Echoed in, "Don't Send Your Kids To TheIvy League" by William Deresiewicz, he uses elements of ethos and pathos to effectively argue that students who attend highly competitive universities may actually be harmed by transforming into people who are "anxious, timid, lost, with little curiosity and a stunted sense of purpose." Throughout the essay, Deresiewicz presents anecdotes and explanations to contend his suggestion. In doing so, he is capable of building trust with the readers and providing authentic reasoning for his claim. Deresiewicz explains, "It was only after twenty–four years in the Ivy League college and a Ph.D. at Columbia, ten years on the faculty at Yale that I started to think about what this system does to kids and how they can escape from it, what it does to our society and how we can dismantle it" (Deresiewicz 203). By stating this, the author not only displays his honesty to the readers when he admits the duration of coming to his realization, but he also establishes his honorable status and credibility by mentioning his experience at Columbia and Yale, two highly respected Ivy

Persuasive Essay On Online Classes

Most people think highly of online classes; get to work from home, get to work on a flexible schedule, and anyone can do it. Though no one has heard the cons of taking one. I personally took three semesters of online classes in high school and had a horrible experience. Because of loose scheduling, poor communication, and the focus needed, online classes are not suitable for procrastinators. To give a better understanding, I will summarize my experience with the class. Me, being a procrastinator, thought to myself: I'll just work on the weekends and if I don't finish the class by the end of the school year, I can finish within the first few weeks of summer. This was a god awful plan. Unsurprisingly, close to nothing was accomplished on the weekends. Friends would ask me to hang out every weekend, and I did every time. Why would I want to work on my class on the weekend when I could be having fun? I would later regret this decision. On the days I stayed home and could have worked on the class, I completed nothing. On these days, I would tell myself: I'll just complete what I didn't do this weekend next weekend. This rarely happened. Thus, the cycle of getting nothing accomplished started. I disregarded my class for most of the first semester of junior year. With only nine assignments out of eighty finished after the first semester of the school year, I was immensely behind. I told myself to get my act together during second semester and grind out these two semesters Get

While doing some of my research, I chose to use Computer Source as my database. The main subject of the database was trends in technology. It allowed me to search trends from any time which was particularly helpful for my topic. The type of search that can be completed using this database is Boolean searching. This type of searching style came in handy because the information I was searching for involved the cyber world, so it made it easier to differentiate which aspect of the cyber world I was researching. For example, differentiating between Cyber Terrorism and Terrorism or Cyber Warfare. Computer Source lets its users search by publication date rather than by scholarship level. Computer Source also showed similarities with Academic Search Complete in that they shared similar fields. In this paper I am going to be discussing the use of snapchat in my life and its policies. Snapchat as an app is very widely used and was created in 2011. With its ability to have messages in picture form that disappeared quickly, it was and still is very appealing; especially to adolescents such as myself. The thing I find so many people fail to look past with this app is its privacy policies and how much information they are giving to snapchat. One of my major focuses will be on the surveillance tactics used by Snapchat. First it was just photos, then screenshots, then face recognition came, and now most recently something called "snapchat maps. The amount of content and personal details Snapchat has collected of our lives is astounding; however, everyone looks past it. Snapchatting is a different a fun way to communicate, which is why it is so popular and what encourages people to look past all that we give them. Snapchat currently has 173 million users, which just shows how much access to people everywhere around the world. It knows our name, location, birthday, email, phone number, and even more than we can imagine. Until doing this project I was one of these people, blinded by how much I was truly giving away about myself, but now after looking through their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, I truly have learnt a great deal. Along with it being easy to master, graphic design can also supply a large amount of money. This is because there are so many websites dedicated to it. As said before, putting designs on numerous websites increases the chances that someone will buy them. Certain websites even have different prices, which is actually a very good point. Some websites will sell designs for up to $30.00, while some only $5.00 or $10.00 dollars. It is a statistical fact that most people will buy cheaper designs, while some people still buying expensive ones. Either way, both websites will generate the same amount of profit. To go along with this, average graphic designers in America today make over $40,000 a year. That is a more than the average salary of an American today, just for doing barely any work. In some cases, graphic designers can make over $60,000 a year, an outrageous salary for doing barely any work. "Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics," announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. "What is your topic Cindy?" As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. "Waffles are better than pancakes." I figured that awaffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. "Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!" I survived to live yet another day. In today's society, suicide can be a multifaceted issue, sometimes an act of heroism, selfishness, love, or a brave choice. I am arguing against suicide because it is not a solution to a problem, it should not even be included as an option. Suicide is simply defined as "the deliberate taking of one's own life, usually the result of a psychiatric disorder, although sometimes deliberated in the face of life–threatening physical illness, significant interpersonal stress, or when under the influence of one or more substances of abuse" (Piotrowski). This topic interests me because of the fact that the rates are increasing year after year and it can happen to someone close to me at any moment. This topic should interest you too because someone close to you can show warning signs, which can be subtle or more discernible. Also if you are reading this as a parent, you should know "suicide is the third leading cause of death for those between the ages of ten and fourteen, and it is the second leading cause of death for those ages fifteen to thirty–four" (Goff). Yet the factors that play into a someone's decision is anything but simple. The most obvious and severe effect of suicide is the loss of a meaningful, valuable human life. "In the United States in 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 41,149 individuals committed suicide and approximately 494,169 received medical treatment for self–inflicted injuries. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 800,000 suicides worldwide in 2016, and suicide is the second leading cause of death among fifteen– to twenty–nine–year–olds worldwide. Women attempt suicide more often than men, but men complete suicide more often than women because men tend to use more lethal means, such as a firearm" (Piotrowski). With suicide rates on a continuous rise in America, society must ask what can be done to save lives. The main argument against suicide is that it is selfish, which is true. By you killing yourself, it causes a lot of pain to those left behind, like your family, loved ones, friends, etc. They tend to blame themselves for your death. Even if you feel like nobody in the whole world cares about you, you are wrong. When you think

Schools have been using the same learning techniques for a long time. Since technology has been evolving, there are changes that have made schooling harder, and some changes that have made schooling easier. For example, instead of using paper and pencil students now have iPads and their own laptops to do their school work on. Are these more advanced changes for the better, and make learning more convenient, or are they unfavorable and make schooling complicated and more problematic? Most examples lead to the conclusion that laptops are more convenient. for the reason, that they make school work easier and generate easy access to sites for research.

During the beginning of my Highschool career everybody was given an iPad; grade six to grade twelve. However not everybody is fond of the iPads. Many students, throughout the long school days, have come up to the library to check out a laptop because they either "lost" their iPad, or they just don't want to use it. Many students have tried to check out laptops even when they have their fully functioning iPads, so now whenever you want to check out a laptop you have to leave your phone for collaboration. In almost every class teachers use the iPads, but not all teachers are fond of the iPads either. Some teachers continue to use paper and pencil because it's more of a convenience to them. Laptops are more convenient for me to use because of the classes I'm currently taking. Such as my CIS comp, CIS world history, and my

There is a common misconception on happiness, people have twisted the definition of true happiness into a material–based feeling. People now find happiness in worldly values such as wealth, recognition, and success. A person learns to rely on money and success as their source of happiness rather than looking within for a more permanent solution to their sadness. The answer to a sad life is not money, recognition or success, when in reality, the answer is to and content with life. Trustinghappiness is present removes any ideas believing "happiness" brought on from economic and personal success. A person should not have to develop greedy values in order to achieve a strong sense of happiness. Happiness is freely given, but people are searching for it in the wrong places; happiness is not a result of financial wellness or success, it is the result of a satisfying view on existence.

For generations, wealth has signified power and happiness. If a person is wealthy, he or she has power and therefore as everything; if a person has everything, he or she is ultimately "happy." Increased wealth supposedly prompts a surge in happiness. Power and financial prosperity blur worry, caused by troubles, that a person faces by making the troubles seem minute and less daunting. The troubles are no longer troubling once money and success cover them up. New purchases and awards help cover up these worries, allowing the person to feel free and "happy" to enjoy life. Worries, however, do not stay

Leaving your child with someone else as you head off to work every day is not easy: As a parent, chances are, you long to be with your child 24/7. This is especially true for new parents. However, once maternity leave has ended, even mom must return to work. While there are several child care options available, one of the best options available is daycare. That said, choosing the daycare center that suits the needs of your family best will require a bit of research.

Art declares many things. It's a way for people to articulate their views, express their emotions, and communicate to the world in a way that gives them creative release. This ability to exhibit one's views in a imaginative and safe manner is exceptionally important to society's growth, and to border this freedom to articulate is detrimental. Art should not be hidden and concealed permanently from the public eye because some see it as vulgar due to the fact that many people have varying definitions as to what is crossing the line. Only certain, obvious things can be noted as truly indecent.

Censorship is not an easy subject. As an artist, there is often a lot of tolerance for the obscene, from appreciation to detail on the human figure or the unique renditions of animalistic interaction. However, the majority of the public might find the same things that the artists see as a unique interpretation as vulgar. It is easy to see that such a standpoint must be taken into more consideration, as the point of indecency can differ greatly for a conservative Christian compared to a liberal atheist. The two images of what each group considers unseemly would most likely range in their obscenity, and so it would be difficult to put a line where one should be crossed. "If an image offends very many people, sooner or later someone will invoke the law, and along with it judges, legislators, policymakers, and the police," quotes Melinda Hinkson in Australia's Bill Henson scandal: notes on the new cultural attitude to images. Here we have a majority rule, where an image should only have action dealt upon it if enough people want change. Such censorship is easy to determine when there are pieces depicting derogatory themes, such as child pornography or racial notions. But there are multiple cases where there are two sides of the story, and it is not as simple. A statue named Truth is Beauty by Marco Cochrane has recently been constructed in the city of San Leandro, here in the bay area. This statue depicts a nude woman dancing, her body semi–geometric, and although you can not vividly see the all of the womans body parts, it is not difficult to know that she is supposed to be depicted as naked.
