What should I do with my old 401K plan? We’ll help you explore your suitable options

Ask yourself a few questions if you are changing jobs or retiring: Would you benefit from professional advice? Does your 401K plan have adequate investment options to meet your needs? Are you paying attention to notices from your 401K provider? Do you have a risk management process in place for your needs and goals?

Call us today for your complimentary consultation In addition to the significant tax penalties cashing out your 401(k) can result in a serious setback to your retirement savings. Diverting that money away from your retirement savings means that you’ll miss out on the power of compounding. You may need to save a lot more in the future to make up for the compound earnings you might have received if you’d stayed invested. Nicholas J. NOTE Recreation, fitness, and health. Plus...real estate, home envy, business, events, and more!

Recovering Together e’re doing our best to stay safe, following CDC recommendations and social distancing, and now our efforts have allowed us the opportunity to slowly open up and join in public activities. The Grosse Ile Recreation Department has been hard at work planning and preparing in order to offer select classes and programs to island residents. Other Grosse Ile Twp. departments have also been working hard to serve our community in a safe manner. Please see their updates in this issue. Businesses are opening up as well. We profile several in our special ‘Home Envy’ section. Please check out these profiles. McLaughlin’s Fine Furnishings takes pride in offering quality furniture and home design services to islanders for almost 70 years (pp 22-24). tured in our ‘Home Envy’ section. New to Grosse Ile Profile is ‘Young at Heart - Seniors in the D’. It’s our special magazine within a magazine that covers active individuals, health and wellness, senior living options, news and events, plus more! Featured in this section is Robert (Bob) Bienenstein who has turned a childhood passion into an interesting lifetime hobby. And, we get to share some time with Dr. Jim Parker as he readies for retirement. He’s spent more than 45 years teaching and inspiring island students and churchgoers too. We thank Dr. Parker and wish him well with his future endeavors. Please stay safe as we recover together!

Grosse Ile Recreation “I want to personally thank all of our community groups, volunteers, staff, and local businesses, for their support”

T

PHOTO BY TYLER HOLLOWAY, GROSSE ILE PROFILE

CLASSES/PROGRAMS Grosse Ile Recreation Department welcomes residents back to the active lifestyle they lived prior to the pandemic – with extra care to maintain everyone’s safety. Please note that all programs are subject to change due to orders from the Governor of Michigan.

his year has been a challenge for all of us, and as we continue though 2020 and the battle of COVID-19, the Recreation Department will always be here to serve you in the safest and most cost-effective manner we can provide. With many of our programs and events being cancelled along with some of our projects on hold, I was pleased to see many of our residents enjoy golf, swimming, and boating, and later-on in the summer, enjoying small parties at the farm, summer concerts, outdoor fitness classes and senior transportation. The residents of Grosse Ile are strong and followed all the recommendations from the CDC, along with courtesy and respect towards each other going through this rough time. As we head into the fall and winter, all programs and events have been carefully planned for your safety. I also want to congratulate our new Township officials and look forward to working together to continue the outstanding services provided not only by the Township but the Recreation Department. The Community Recreation Commission will continue to meet the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m., and we encourage residents to attend meetings, call a commissioner, or email the Director with what you would like to see in the upcoming years. The Recreation Department five-year plan is set to expire in December, thankfully an extension has been granted, so your input will be very important as we move forward. In closing, I want to personally thank all our community groups, volunteers, staff, and local businesses for all their support. A special thank you to Jim Nelson and Chad Novak for always keeping our community first! And I look forward to working with our Township officials in the next chapter of Parks and Recreation.

Sincerely, Kim O’Farrell Director - Grosse Ile Recreation Department

Our goal is to provide you with a public service to keep our residents safe and secure

T

he Grosse Ile Police Department hopes that all of you are safe and healthy. We have been working diligently to provide prompt and professional community-oriented police services, while enforcing state statutes and local ordinances to keep you safe and secure.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

Vehicle traffic has increased on the north end of the island this year due to the closure of the Wayne County Bridge for repairs. The increase of traffic is due to the re-routing to the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge for off island travel. Patrol vehicles and radar detection devices have been deployed to monitor traffic in the posted speed limit and traffic control light areas.

MARINE SAFETY Watercraft vessel traffic has always been busy during the summer months as residents enjoy the surrounding waters of Grosse Ile. There have been several complaints that involve “No Wake Zone” and “Careless Operation”. 16-Marine has been deployed on several occasions for summer enforcement.

The GIFD taking the necessary precautions to avoid potential exposure to COVID-19 when answering calls

W

has changed the way the Fire Department responds to its calls and the new Chief had to ensure all first responders had the correct personal protective equipment and were taking the nec-

essary precautions to avoid potential exposure to COVID 19 when answering calls. Life has changed for many of us with the COVID-19 mandates. All fire departments are required to implement the CDC’s recommendations as well as the Governors recommendations. It was a learning experience for sure. On top of becoming Chief, Russell had to train his successor - a new Fire Marshal. Kevin Langley had been with the department for more than seven years and was the perfect fit for the role. In turn, Kevin has also had to recruit some new volunteers for the Fire Department and ensure they are trained and ready to respond. If you see the new Fire Chief, or the Fire Marshal, or any of the Fire Department volunteers, know that they are working hard and ready to respond to the next call for help.

McLaughlin’s Home Furnishings Dedication to providing a positive customer experience as well as a commitment to offering high-quality furnishings at a fair price sets McLaughlin’s apart EDIT JACKI KILBRIDE PHOTOS JANE FIJAL / IAN POKRIEFKA

THERE’S A SAYING in the furniture industry:

there’s no end to low end. Low end, however, is not what you’ll find at a place like McLaughlin’s Home Furnishings. Rather, Ken, Don, and Dan McLaughlin take personal pride in providing customers with quality furniture. The brothers know a thing or two about customer service and running a furniture store, having learned from the best. Their father started McLaughlin’s Home Furnishings over 68 years ago, and over the years he stressed to the boys the importance of treating everyone the same, no matter their budget. This dedication to providing a positive customer experience, as well as a commitment to offering high-quality furnishings at a fair price, continues to set McLaughlin’s apart from the rest. “We truly care about our customers,” said Don McLaughlin. “A lot of our customers become friends.” The staff at McLaughlin’s strive to meet their customers’ needs by matching them with the right furniture for their home and budget. They offer reasonable prices and financing is always available. The store’s furnishings are all selected for their high-quality construction and design. “We’ve heard horror stories of people going to lower-end locations and they sit on a sofa and it feels like a concrete block. We encourage customers to get into the store and experience the difference,” said Don. As important as it is to try before you buy, that can pose a challenge in the midst of COVID-19. That is why McLaughlin’s Home Furnishings follows all CDC protocols regarding face masks, sanitizing, and cleaning the showroom. No appointment is necessary to visit, as the showrooms are plenty large enough to accommodate safe social distancing. That being said, if a customer would prefer an appointment, staff are happy to oblige. Sometimes, when furniture shopping, you need a little extra help or a second opinion. If you’re having difficulty selecting the right furnishings for your home, you can enlist the help of McLaughlin’s complimentary design services.

Susie Armiak

“Whatever [clients] goals are, I’m looking forward to helping achieve them” EDIT JACKI KILBRIDE

THOSE FAMILIAR WITH Susie Armiak may know her as a personal trainer and the owner of Tip Top Physique. This fall, however, Susie is switching gears and diving into a new profession as a realtor. While she may be newly licensed, Susie brings to the table years of experience in real estate sales. “Prior to getting my license, I sold my husband’s properties that we built,” said Susie, of MBA Realty Group. “There are resources that are not available to those who are not licensed. A realtor can make sure all the T’s are crossed and the I’s are dotted.” Susie was drawn to the real estate profession after spending over 25 years working alongside her husband at Armiak Aluminum and All-Star Restoration. There, she was instrumental in assisting with the renovating, building, and selling all their projects. During that time, Susie said she developed an eye for what consumers are looking for. “[It’s about] being able to read people and trying to get into their head to figure out what they want,” said Susie. “Whatever their goals are, I’m looking forward to helping achieve them.” Not only must a good realtor be in touch with their client’s wants and needs in a home, but they must be familiar with the area they’re working in. And Susie is no stranger to Downriver, having lived on Grosse Ile for over 20 years and in the larger Downriver area her entire life. If you’re looking for a vacation home, Susie has you covered there, as well. She’s spent plenty of time up north and is prepared to help you find your perfect cottage.

We love what we do and we’ll continue to give our all for as long as we can – Kim & Kenny

Down River Pest Control 2020 MARKS 50 years of dedicated service

to the community by Down River Pest Control. Current owners Kimberly, whose parents Jimmy and Sarah Wass purchased the business from a friend in 1983, and Kenny Bingham strive to put that personal touch in everything they do, and often receive rave reviews about, thorough work and their tendency to go above and beyond. “We’re not a big company, but we have an awesome following and such loyal customers,” says Kim, who was overwhelmed with emotion when explaining that some customers have been with them for more than 30 years. The secret to their success is obvious – they are three good people, doing the best they can for their customers and neighbors, even occasionally offering pro bono work for veterans and seniors. There’s Kenny, a four year Army veteran who Kim playfully says is a proud hillbilly coming up with creative, if not outlandish, solutions for problems. “He has these contraptions he probably should have patented years ago, that get the job done,” says Kim. Then there is technician Hernan Mendoza, a four year Marine veteran with a drive like no other - who continuously takes the time to educate customers. “He’s incredibly driven,

considerate, and an all-around nice person.” And finally there’s Kim, working nonstop even while stuck in Florida due to COVID. “I’m just really thankful to our customers who have been so good to us. We love what we do, and we’ll continue to give our all for as long as we can.” Going into winter, Down River Pest Control will be doing a lot of work on mice and carpenter ants. Kim notes for anyone planning ahead, the first part of April is usually the time to start protecting your home or business for Spring and Summer.

His hobby started in the 1930s with 10-cent models

Build, Fly, Compete For 98-year-old, Robert Bienenstein, his model plane hobby has been a significant passion in his life EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER PHOTOS TYLER HOLLOWAY

HOBBIES ARE A healthy part of life. Children are especially eager to try their hand at several until something sticks. What’s wonderful about these pastime activities is the way they often shape our life experiences. For 98-year-old Robert (Bob) Bienenstein, his model airplane hobby has been a constant, and significant, passion in his life.

Bob’s his first big win was the Michigan State Senior Championship in 1947.

LIVING “Back in the old days, model airplanes were a real big deal,” says Bob who started building planes when he was nine years old. Although he can’t accurately pinpoint what drove the desire to start making them, Bob says he’s always been fascinated by planes and once he began he never looked back. His hobby started in the 1930s with 10-cent models, the same kind you can buy in specialty hobby shops today. “My father was always supportive of my hobby,” says Bob, recalling his father promises to buy him new pieces only after he finished with what he already owned. Because of this, Bob pushed himself to complete projects despite their difficulty and as quickly as possible. Over time, Bob could no longer be satisfied with one type of plane and began to develop his interest by learning about others, the first being gas powered. By this time, Bob was building and competing, and although he didn’t have much success with his early endeavors, he did win a design event with an original creation. “There were a lot of prizes, and you could win an airplane,” says Bob. Once during the lean war years, Bob took second place in a competition and won a pound of butter. First place was a pound of bacon. When the war ended, Bob decided to learn everything he could from modelers returning from service. They taught him how to carve props and competition techniques that would help him see victory. After years of practicing and learning, Bob’s passion turned into a genuine skill. Bob used his math and problem solving skills as a design engineer with Chrysler.

In 1947, Bob had his first big win in the Michigan State Senior Championship, which led to him becoming Senior National Champion. Bob went on to fly in competitions around the world, flying to places as far away as Poland. He also continued to win everything from medals and trophies to cars and a two-year engineering scholarship. After years of reading and writing blueprints, which Bob says he could do before actually being able to read, the natural transition of these math and engineering skills would be to go to school for engineering. Bob eventually found himself a job at Chrysler as a design engineer where he ensured the designs drawn up for cars would be functional for consumers. No matter what happened and where life took him, Bob continued to build and compete. According to him, one of the most challenging parts of this lifelong hobby is also one of his proudest. That was building and flying full sized gliders. Glider aircraft are made out of fiberglass. Glider pilots require licenses and skill, neither of which were hard to come by for Bob. He built them in his basement and assembled them in his backyard, removing them piece by piece through his basement window. Bob continued to build and fly planes while raising his son and daughter with his wife. He also continued to win. Besides his numerous competition wins for both flight and design, he also holds several records including the 100k, 200k, and 300k speed triangle records in glider completions.

LIVING In 1987, Bob retired from Chrysler and eventually from glider completions and returned to model contest flying. He continues to compete and win today. He is well known in the world of aeromodelling and a member of AMA, NFFS, and SAM Halls of Fame. He has also won the Mulvihill trophy (one of the most prestigious awards in aeronautics) six times. Over this prolific career, Bob has never been stingy with his knowledge. He has not only written for several flying publications but is happy to talk about planes with anyone and has given demonstrations to many Boy Scouts, Canadian Air Scouts, and in Detroit Public Schools.

Bob’s home in Allen Park, in which he has lived for over 15 years, shows evidence of his enthusiasm for planes. From artwork on the walls to remote controlled helicopters he toys with from time to time, it’s no wonder some of this love rubbed off on his children. Bob’s son is also a pilot and learned to fly with his father by guiding the wings of gliders as they flew together. You could spend hours in his basement going over Bob’s collection of accomplishments. Not to mention the parts of planes he has accumulated in the attic. Bob is living proof of turning a hobby into a lifelong passion, which leads to endless opportunities and a sense of fulfillment that we all look for.

Dr. Jim Parker has announced his retirement after a long and influential career EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER

•  PHOTOS IAN POKRIEFKA

AFTER 45 YEARS of directing the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church Adult Choir, Jim Parker, DMA has decided to step down. And while he’d have liked to continue, Dr. Parker explains that the break in church services due to the pandemic marked a good time to retire. Dr. Parker’s musical influence stretches beyond the church choir, including teaching vocal music for 40 years in the Grosse Ile Township Schools, teaching German (beginning in 1996), founding the widely traveled Grosse Ile Chorale as well as the Parker Chorale, directing a variety of musicals, and more. While teaching music has been a substantial part of Dr. Parker’s life, he says he wasn’t sure that’s what he wanted to do. After returning from a year of studying abroad in Germany, the college junior found himself two classes shy of a bachelor’s degree in German. In making up those credits, Dr. Parker graduated from Michigan State University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in German and a Bachelor of Music in Public School Vocal Music. PROFILE

Dr. Jim Parker received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree, his 3rd degree from Michigan State University, in 1988.

Four years after obtaining his master’s degree, Dr. Parker married, and he and his wife Elaine moved to Grosse Ile in 1970, where Dr. Parker was teaching vocal music to students in high school down to 3rd grade. During his tenure, Dr. Parker says he also had the pleasure to direct 40 musicals for the high school, beginning with Pirates of Penzance and ending with Oklahoma, his favorite being West Side Story. In 1986, to fulfill the requirements for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, Dr. Parker researched and translated the German ChoralPassion by Hugo Distler and performed it in his doctoral recital during Lent. While this work was one of the most difficult projects Dr. Parker

undertook, it resulted in the completion of his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1988 (his 3rd degree from Michigan State University) and birthed the Grosse Ile Chorale. The Grosse Ile Chorale was a community choir of roughly 50 singers who, led by Dr. Parker, performed an annual concert in Grosse Ile. The Traveling Chorale began in 1998 and has had nine international tours over the years visiting places such as Europe, Russia, China, Greece, the Greek Islands, the Baltics, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Spain, and South Africa. Dr. Parker says that the group would have toured Ireland in 2020, but like most plans, it was canceled in the wake of COVID-19.

Dr. Parker has many ties to the Grosse Ile community through music from the Presbyterian church and public schools to directing musicals for the Islanders and co-directing the Grosse Ile Children’s Choir. Dr. Parker says that while much has changed over the years, a lot has remained the same and that what he will miss the most is working closely with his church choir family. Looking forward, Dr. Parker says that his retirement plans are “to be decided,” though he will be playing piano, reading, and, hopefully, cleaning his music room.
