Dear Friends,

WARRIOR STRONG

I am so looking forward to seeing all of your children & grandchildren enjoying our beautiful Civic Center Park this summer. There are multiple playscapes for them to play on, including an allinclusive one for children with special needs. This is what makes Woodhaven a great place to live. We are a city that thinks outside of the box, making sure that everyone is included in our planning. By popular demand, the park now has new pickleball courts. We also have disc golf, batting cages, a splash pad, and completely redone baseball diamonds. Of course, no recreational area is complete without a place for our furry friends to run & play, so we have two beautiful Woodhaven Dog Parks (one for small pups and the other for larger dogs) for your best friends to enjoy.

Are you 62 years or older? We would love for you to join our Senior Club, where you can play cards, show off your bocce ball skills, and attend luncheons (many of which are provided by the City). We also organize both day trips and longer getaways for our seniors to enjoy. We have a fulltime Senior Coordinator who loves to show new members around and give them a calendar of events for the month. Our Senior Coordinator is here for all of our senior residents and can guide them through all of the resources that are available to them, such as transportation, Medicare seminars, safety resources, Meals on Wheels, and more.

Your safety is always our main concern here at the City. We continue to maintain staffing levels in the police department and are striving to increase our fire protection. To that end, we have added several full-time firefighters recently. We know how important it is to feel safe and protected at all times.

So many businesses want to make Woodhaven their home, as it has become the place to live. Coming soon will be Culver’s, Dairy Queen Chill & Grill, Pita Way, and El Vaquero.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at this year’s celebration of Uncle Sam Jam. Please come and enjoy the free entertainment and fireworks show.

Never hesitate to contact me if you have any issues. My door is always open.

Patty Odette, D. C. Mayor for the City of Woodhaven

Profile Who is Who at City Hall?

In this edition of the Woodhaven Profile, the only official Woodhaven publication, we are starting a new feature: “Who is Who at City Hall?”

Let’s kick this off with the Department of Economic Development and the DDA (Downtown Development Authority). These two departments operate under the leadership of Lisa M. Lothringer.

Mrs. Lothringer has been with the city of Woodhaven since early September of 2023 and hit the ground running to complete reporting requirements for the DDA and collaborating with the city’s planning and engineering firms on current and future projects.

ship. Besides being responsible for public relations and marketing, there were three major projects completed during her tenure. These included the $1.15 million Quirk Park Splash Pad and Playground project, a $2.83 million Placemaking project in the center of the business district and a Pedestrian bridge over I94 to connect the two sides of the DDA district.

Prior to coming to Woodhaven, Lothringer spent 8 years as the DDA Deputy Director in Van Buren Town-

Mrs. Lothringer holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Siena Heights University in Adrian, where she graduated magna cum laude and an Associate of Science from Monroe County Community College. She resides in Carleton/Ash Township with her husband, John. They have two adult sons, Joshua, and John, who both live in the area. •

Ed Odette, Deputy Director of Woodhaven Parks and Recreation, retired on April 4. A party with the many co-workers from and friends he’s made through his long tenure with the City of Woodhaven was held at Maverick’s.

Woodhaven Playground Program

W 8 | SUMMER 2024

FOR FOUR DECADES, the Woodhaven Summer Playground Program has given local youths the opportunity to stay active socially, educationally, and physically during their summer break. Throughout that time, its mission has remained the same. “The program has been around for 40 years, and the same values and community driven practices are still in place today,” says Mike Schmittou, Woodhaven Director of Parks and Recreation. As a result, most current staff of the camp are also alumni. In fact, many current workers end up training future workers to be involved in various facets of the camp.

For much of the summer each year, the young participants are able to engage in various stimulative activities with one another. Children ages 5 to 13 learn collaborative skills, among other valuable lessons, through a variety of means. Students are placed in grade appropriate groups to learn and participate together. According to Schmittou, “Throughout daily schedules, children go through a rotation consisting of gym activities, sit down games, board games, outdoor games, arts, and crafts.” In addition, participants are able to go on field trips that include recreational and educational outings. The 8-week program, which runs five days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., also features several special events to keep youth engaged. This year, the nearly 900 participants will be dispersed to five different locations in the Woodhaven area from June 17th to August 9th.

While the program enriches the community, the Woodhaven Summer Playground Program has also been heartily supported by the community. One such example is in their relationship with the Woodhaven Brownstown School District.

NEWS and Views SUMMER 2024 | W 9

“We are blessed to have a collaborative relationship with the School District in supporting the program with facilities, promotion, funding and meetings each year to help the program's efficiency,” explains Schmittou. “They were also instrumental in bringing free lunch and snacks for the children in need.”

In a nod to the popularity of the Woodhaven Summer Playground Program, many participants continue to be involved in the camp as workers and counselors well into adulthood. “I myself was a participant as a child. I then became a worker at 16, a school supervisor, program coordinator, and now, parks and recreation director,” explains Schmittou. Virtually everyone in leadership has participated in the program in some form. “My new Program Coordinator, Brianna Charron, went to the summer program as a child, and followed a similar path to becoming our coordinator,” adds Schmittou. The fact that the leaders have also participated in this initiative has allowed for continuity of purpose. “In terms of staffing, from top to bottom, 70% of our workers went to the Summer Playground Program,” Mike said. Because staff are asked to participate with the children in their activities, they have a firsthand view of what goals are to be accomplished. Therefore, they are keenly aware of the mission from year to year. •
