What should I do with my old 401K plan? We’ll help you explore your suitable options

Ask yourself a few questions if you are changing jobs or retiring: Would you benefit from professional advice? Does your 401K plan have adequate investment options to meet your needs? Are you paying attention to notices from your 401K provider? Do you have a risk management process in place for your needs and goals?

Call us today for your complimentary consultation In addition to the significant tax penalties cashing out your 401(k) can result in a serious setback to your retirement savings. Diverting that money away from your retirement savings means that you’ll miss out on the power of compounding. You may need to save a lot more in the future to make up for the compound earnings you might have received if you’d stayed invested. Nicholas J. Apex, known for installing water-saving irrigation systems and high-efficiency indoor/outdoor fireplaces, was founded in 2007 by Jeff Jones. Jones, who has over 30 years of experience in the business, says that after operating primarily by word-of-mouth for over a decade, it was time to open a retail location. The Apex showroom opened at the end of 2019 and is located at 24561 Telegraph Road in Brownstown Township. The store serves

Apex products are a cost-efficient solution for fireplaces that don’t vent properly not only as an opportunity to showcase working models but also to educate potential buyers on the significant number of options available to them through Apex. For people looking to upgrade an existing fireplace or have one built, what may seem like an overwhelming project, couldn’t be easier with the help of an Apex specialist who will walk them through the entire decision process. After choosing a design, whether that’s a new insert or a door to complement the existing hearth,

a home visit is scheduled so that buyers are guaranteed to get the right product for their situation. While dated-looking fireplaces are the main reason people seek an update, performance is a factor that shouldn’t be overlooked. “Traditional fireplaces are usually between negative ten and ten percent efficient in terms of heat production,” explains Jones. “Our upgrades consist of installing a fireplace within an existing opening that brings the ef-

ficiently up to 75%.” Additionally, Apex products are a cost-efficient solution for fireplaces that don’t vent properly, “for example, people who have chimney damage, instead of paying for an expensive reline, every fireplace with an Apex direct vent insert will draft properly.” Apex offers both gas and wood-burning inserts, with gas being the popular choice Downriver. Jones, a Downriver native living in Trenton says his own home is heated primarily via fireplace, with the furnace acting as a backup. And with Apex’s inserts, the temperature is set with the accompanying remote, taking the guesswork out of heating the home. When choosing Apex, you’re guaranteed to be serviced by experienced experts who work directly for the company, not subcontractors. These technicians aim not only to create beautiful focal points in homes and businesses but to exceed their client’s expectations when it comes to their heating needs. Jones adds that he’s grateful for the community in which he lives and works, something that drives his business to operate at the highest level of service. “I love Downriver. The people here I’ve been working with my whole adult life and have just been amazing. We’re going to serve this community and do the best that we can.”

There may have never been a better time to have a trusted cleaning service than in 2020

uring these uncertain times, there is still a constant when it comes to quality cleaning. There may have never been a better time to have a trusted cleaning service than in 2020. For the last eight decades, people across Southeast Michigan have trusted DRC Cleaning Solutions for all of their commercial and residential needs. In 1940, Jerry Jankowski began Down River Cleaning as a window cleaning company. When Jerry’s son Robert Sr. became involved, the business expanded to include janitorial services, and in 2010, Robert Sr.’s children, Bob Jr., Randy, and Robin, expanded the company to conduct emergency restoration services. Most recently,

the fourth-generation has come aboard, looking to further improve DRC’s overall service. While Parker Jankowski (one of Robert Sr.’s twelve grandchildren) has been involved with the family company for many years, after graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in business management, he’s ready to contribute his own experience. “Parker is going to take us to that next level,” says Robin Jankowski-DeDecker, DRC Cleaning Solutions Vice President. Since beginning work full-time, some of Parker’s contributions include launching DRC’s social media pages, various marketing initiatives, and adding office technology that will help improve service across the board. One of the great things about working with a family-owned business is their commitment to their community. DRC’s glowing online reviews as well as their healthy customer reten-

DRC is the only company in Southeast Michigan to offer the HALO fogging system tion records, some being customers for over 60 years, proves their reputation of providing the highest quality of service. When the pandemic began, DRC was equipped to handle the situation. Outside of using the usual high-grade disinfectants, DRC is the only company in Southeast Michigan to use the HALO fogging systems. These HALO foggers emit a mist of Silver Nitrate (AGNO3) and high-volume hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into the air, disinfecting even the hardest to reach surfaces without leaving any residuals behind.

“Using this process, we have enabled many of our essential clients to remain in operation,” says Bob Jr. Disinfecting services have been performed in both residential and commercial settings such as; corporate offices, medical facilities, municipal buildings, chemical plants, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Additional services offered by DRC include carpet cleaning, window washing, pressure washing, biohazard cleaning, restoration for fire, mold, or water damage and more. All services are competitively priced. If residential or commercial cleaning seems unessential, 2020 has certainly proved otherwise. As Parker explains, “A lot of people don’t recognize the value behind cleaning services, but it’s something that needs to be done to ensure a clean and safe environment.” For over 80 years, DRC Cleaning Solutions has been committed to doing the job people don’t want to do themselves and doing it right.

usen’s Appliance is a family owned eighty-four-year-old tradition, and one-stop shop for appliances, service, and parts that brings with it great customer service. Busen’s Appliance was opened in 1937 by Earl Schiedel, and at the time was named Schiedel’s Appliance. After ten dedicated years in business, Earl decided to retire, selling Schiedel's to his son-in-law Cletus Busen. Cletus, along with his twin brother Clifford, took up the torch, changed the name to

what we now know as Busen’s Appliance, and set off decades of prosperous business practices. In 1972, Clifford’s Son, Mike Busen, joined the business after working three years for Raytheon Corp, deciding that the family business was the right path to take. Keeping up the tradition, Mike’s son Tim joined the business and became co-owner along with his father a mere two years later. Tim Busen, the current owner, continues this dedication to outstanding customer service even after his father Mike’s passing in July of 2020.

AMERICAN MADE QUALITY The Speed Queen Brand of appliances, that are featured at Busen’s Appliance, is unique in that it is not distributed via big-box stores. Rather, they work exclusively with independent appliance dealers, like Busen’s, who also service the appliances they sell. Both Speed Queen and Busen’s share values such as passion, ethics, and commitment. Busen’s exemplifies those standards. They ensure their service technicians and sales staff attend training on all the brands they sell. When a customer enters the Busen’s store, they are assured of buying the best appliance for their individual needs.

Maintaining a business rich in history while upholding a high standard for small family-owned businesses everywhere to emulate. With a staff of five factory-trained service techs, three well-experienced sales associates, and two excellent delivery drivers on hand six days a week, one can count on Busen’s Appliance. Carrying all the major brand-named appliances like Speed Queen, which comes with their generous warranty on all their washer/dryers, this is the place to find the right fit for all your appliance needs. Busen’s has a commitment to service and a bond with their customers which Tim believes is due to the one-on-one professional service people have become accustomed to. This high standard for business, along with help from places like BrandSource to keep prices competitive, allows Busen’s Appliance to be a true front-runner in the market against the big box stores. This is more than your average appliance store, Busen’s Appliance showcases the highest quality for business that can only be found with generations of hard work and commitment to excellence in customer service. It is safe to say that this family-owned business will continue to bring amazing service to the community for generations to come, and you can find them on the same street they have been on since 1937!

Kim attributes a large portion of her 2020 success to referrals, “I’m constantly working to demonstrate that I’m the one who will go the extra mile for my clients. While I thrive on working hard and earning business through my knowledge of the market, it’s a wonderful feeling to have past clients refer me to someone close to them. The act of referral is a true testament to my work and solidifies that what I’m doing to help people is really working.” Kim brings a fresh perspective utilizing new methods of communication to market homes and is always looking for the next unique idea to give her listings an advantage. She has established a portfolio of contacts to help her with her efforts including contractors that assist her clients well after the sale is finalized. Kim continuously seeks ways to personally improve, and in a short amount of time, she has positioned herself as a true expert in the industry. n Kim Draper - Island Realty

Susie Harrison is just now entering her 43rd year as a real estate agent/broker. “It’s been a wonderful journey and a greatly satisfying experience helping clients make major changes in their lives,” she says. Over the years Susie has developed an understanding of others needs and the important aspect of always being there to guide intelligently and make the experience very satisfying. That, through the final closing, all feel their needs were considered and met to the best of the everyone's ability. Of course a beautiful desirable home is everyone’s wish. In which to live life and that of their families. And that's the fun in this business. Exciting, too. Prior to the 2008 market crash, Susie had four offices and 35 agents under her guidance. Unfortunately the great recession that followed affected all involved, and the franchise she so loved, opted to eliminate the real estate franchise business, turning their focus to insurance and investments. Today, Susie is very satisfied working with Century 21 Riverpointe. “The 32 agents working in this office gives credibility to one of the most important sides of real estate this is a people business,” says Susie, “We work as a team.” n

COMMUNITY GROWN GARDENS

RECREATION DEPARTMENT

fter her daughter's recruitment to play hockey in downtown Detroit, Kimberly O’Farrell moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Grosse Ile, becoming the island’s Recreation Director in 2017. Now, as an islander herself, Kim says that she feels an incredibly strong bond with the community. Unsurprisingly, in 2020 the recreation department was pushed to find unique alternatives to the many things that help a community thrive. One of the projects Kim is particularly proud of was the Grosse Ile High School class of 2020 graduation parade, joking about directing traffic with a megaphone that day, ensuring things ran smoothly.

The pandemic also had an impact on the transportation service on which seniors in the community have come to depend. For many, this service was their only way to get around, and for some, a primary means of obtaining groceries. Kim, worried how these community members would get essentials, immediately jumped into action. Kim’s first initiative, a donation drive in early April called “Stock Up For Seniors,” gathered difficult to find items such as toilet paper and Lysol wipes. Going further, Kim began a grocery shopping service on Tuesdays and Thursdays, where she picked up seniors’ lists, did their shopping, and delivered their groceries. Now that the transportation service has returned, Kim still shops for seniors once a week and has no intentions of stopping. These being just a few of the many things the Recreation Department does with Kim at the helm, she made it clear how incredibly grateful she is for the various volunteer groups, saying, “Without them, I wouldn’t be able to succeed.” Regarding her personal contributions, she added, “I want people to know that I’m here for them, and if I didn’t love what I do, I wouldn’t be doing it.”

or more than five years, Danielle West, a former teacher of 17 years, has been addressing a global problem of food insecurity through local efforts. From teaching herself to grow fruits and vegetables in her backyard to becoming the Executive Director at the Grosse Ile Community Grown Gardens (formally G.I. Gardens of Hope), Danielle says she was inspired to join because the garden not only provides food to those in need but also teaches people how to grow and sustain their own harvest, knowledge that seems to be getting lost over generations. As Danielle became more involved, she began helping develop various food access, donation, and education programs to make sure that anyone who wanted to learn could. It was through the garden Danielle was introduced to the Grosse Ile Rotary. Not knowing then what the Rotary was or how it would fulfill her desire to volunteer, Danielle says, “The funny thing is, I’ve probably been looking for the Rotary my whole life,” adding that after two years of being a member, she’s amazed how much the organization does for the community. Danielle is also a mom and works full time with the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance as a Youth Program Coordinator, where she is organizing Wayne County’s college access efforts. It’s evident that her contribution to the CGG and Rotary comes from a place of love, and for Danielle, giving back is more than a donation of food, but of time and knowledge.

GROSSE ILE YACHT CLUB

rosse Ile is very dear to Sandy Cullen’s heart. The Grosse Ile Yacht Club General Manager says of the island, “I love it here, it’s absolutely beautiful – and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. It’s a really nice community.” This connection has been fostered during her 30 years working on the island – having been at the yacht club for the last 14 years and before that, 16 years at the West Shore Golf & Country Club. Sandy’s fondness for the island, as well as her passion for community service, is reflected in her years of contributions to the Grosse Ile Rotary Club, of which she is a board member. According to Sandy, she’s just doing her part. “That’s what you’re supposed to do – It’s your civic duty to help in the community and wherever you’re needed.” With the Rotary Club, Sandy has helped organize numerous events and

fundraisers such as the annual golf outing at the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club, and a pig roast at the Macomb Commons on World Polio Day to raise awareness and funds for the disease. Sandy suggests that everyone can benefit from joining the Rotary – for at least one year – as a means to pay it forward and see just how enriching it is for their life. Balancing her dedication to the yacht club with her personal life, Sandy enjoys spending time with her kids and grandkids. She also cares for her parents with her mother recently undergoing surgery. Sandy’s caring spirit has even been picked up by her children, having a son who has done mission work in Africa and a daughter working in healthcare with disabled adults.

She also cares for her large dance family of both recreational and competitive dancers. Gina fell in love with dance as a little girl while accompanying her father, Detroit Symphony Orchestra 1st violinist, to performances and rehearsals. She knew early on that dance would become her life and taught her first dance class at her home studio at the age of 17. Today, Gina has been teaching for over half of her life. “It’s not just about the job of teaching these kids to dance; it’s definitely driven by the love and discipline of the art,” says Gina, explaining that she appreciates how hard her dancers work, recognizes that she can be firm with them but still realizes the importance of keeping it fun. She gives her dancers her all, from

the best instructors to opportunities across the country to perform, even landing them job opportunities when they’re able to work. Even if they don’t pursue a professional dance career she knows firsthand how these skills they are taught such as commitment and discipline, will be carried the rest of their lives. During the pandemic, Gina says she worried about her dancer’s physical and mental wellbeing. That’s why she ensured Studio G remained open via Zoom, ensuring they’d continue to have a sense of normalcy as well as a physical outlet. For fun during the holiday season, in place of a Christmas party, Gina planned fun things like a virtual Secret Santa and a scavenger hunt on Macomb Street. Studio G dancers often stay in contact well after graduation, and alumni have an open invitation to visit or take dance classes free of charge when they’re home from school. Gina says that some of her former students teach for her today, and others even bring their own children to the studio. Despite being busy at home, at the studio, and frequently on the road, Gina says she wouldn’t have it any other way. She loves dance, and is passionate about seeing that love grow in others.

ith health in sharp focus as a result of the pandemic, now may be a good time to look at the team of experts you have in place and see if there are any improvements you could make. You probably have a family doctor, dentist, and optometrist. Maybe you have some specialist physicians, a trainer, or a massage therapist. If a physical therapist isn't a part of your healthcare team, you're missing out on taking care of a big part of your health. To understand why you need a physical therapist, you need to understand what they do.

40

|

PHYSICAL THERAPISTS HELP YOU DO THINGS The American Physical Therapy Association defines PTs as “health care professionals who diagnose and treat individuals who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.” So physical therapists help you do things that you have trouble with. That could be going for a hike, playing with your kids, or getting through a day of work without pain.

GROSSEILEMAG.COM •

Winter/Spring 2021

PHYSICAL THERAPISTS REDUCE PAIN Chronic pain is a huge problem worldwide. A big part of that is low back pain. Statistically, around 80% of people will have low back pain in their lifetimes. Physical therapists are trained to treat pain without surgery or medications. If you have back pain, an arthritic knee, neck pain, or an old injury that won't go away, a PT may be able to help.

PHYSICAL THERAPISTS KEEP YOU HEALTHY The APTA goes on to say that “PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.” That means that a physical therapist can help you determine your risk for injury, choose the right fitness program, and improve the quality of your life by improving your health and ability to move.

PHYSICAL THERAPISTS CAN HELP YOU LIVE LONGER It’s well known that the risk of many of the leading causes of death can be reduced by exercise. Some of these conditions would include heart disease, cancer, lung disease, diabetes, and stroke. By helping you move better with less pain, finding the right exercise program, and helping you to make healthy lifestyle choices, a PT could help you live longer.

Physical therapists have a unique set of skills and expertise that can do a lot to improve your health and quality of life. If you don’t have one, consider adding one to your healthcare team.
