What should I do with my old 401K plan? We’ll help you explore your suitable options
Ask yourself a few questions if you are changing jobs or retiring: Would you benefit from professional advice? Does your 401K plan have adequate investment options to meet your needs? Are you paying attention to notices from your 401K provider? Do you have a risk management process in place for your needs and goals?
Call us today for your complimentary consultation In addition to the significant tax penalties cashing out your 401(k) can result in a serious setback to your retirement savings. Diverting that money away from your retirement savings means that you’ll miss out on the power of compounding. You may need to save a lot more in the future to make up for the compound earnings you might have received if you’d stayed invested. Nicholas J. Downtown Beauty Bar Camille Meyer and Downtown Beauty Bar bring New York sophistication to Downriver

WHILE ELEGANCE AND sophistication
are often associated with the upscale communities of New York and Beverly Hills, they also feel inaccessible to the average consumer. The high-class boutiques found on Rodeo Drive might be far away, but the glamour and services associated with them are not. Downtown Beauty Bar is the product of entrepreneur Camille Meyer. Much like the business she’s recently established, Meyer is herself a recent addition to the Downriver community, after spending a considerable amount of time in New York. She intends to bring the same upscale cosmopolitan beautification to the new area she calls home. “I wanted to take all my favorite things from New York City and combine them into
one.” Meyer explains, “I owned a medical spa for 16 years, so this isn’t my first rodeo.” While the concept of having a day at the spa to rejuvenate, replenish and beautify isn’t a new concept by any means–Downtown Beauty Bar offers everything you could ask for at a price that’s affordable. Aside from competitive pricing, Meyer puts emphasis on providing services that are tailor made for individual needs, rather than pushing unnecessary procedures and gouging the customers bank account. Meyers then reaffirms that she’s much more interested in what’s best for the customer. “We would rather under-treat you and have you come back, than over-treat you and have you not look like you.” Downtown Beauty Bar is a multifaceted establishment, combining five separate entities into one functioning organism. Meyer places expertise and professionalism at every level. No detail is left unattended. The Consult Bar is where it all begins. This is where a comprehensive plan for the customer is formulated. “Consultations are complimentary” Meyers doesn’t want to place unsolicited pressure on her customers, much like the way a pushy Fall/Winter 2021-22

salesman might do. Her and her team are here to offer experience and education for the benefit of their clientele. The Botox Bar is home of Diamond Injector Mei Lerner, RN, BSN, who administers Botox, Dermal Fillers and PDO threads. Downtown Beauty Bar’s own master aesthetic injector, her expertise is not only seen through her craft, but her willingness to educate the customer about what procedures and options are available. Meyers speaks highly of her staff member “She wants people to leave and still look like themselves, but look fantastic...she educates everybody before doing anything.” The Facial Bar is the crème de la crème of Meyer’s multifaceted establishment. From industry standards such as chemical peels and acne treatments to advanced techniques such as dermaplaning and red-light therapy for cellular repair, there are services available for people of every age. As you might have
guessed, Meyer and staff have their eyes on the prize, and more specifically, yours. Which is why Downtown Beauty Bar also offers lash lifts & tints, and extensions. After all, the eyes of the world will be on you after a rejuvenating treatment, and you want yours to look your best. A staple of New York City Women is the blow out–offered exclusively at the facilities’ Dry Bar. A styling technique which can last for an entire week, it’s ideal for those constantly on the go and need a little bit of help in making life easier. If you have a special oc-
casion to prepare for, or just need to look your very best, the Dry Bar has you covered. If you decide that the blow out is a new way of life rather than simply a time saver, be sure to ask the staff about the ‘Dry Bar Addicts’ membership. The blow out is a shining example of the new ground Meyers’ is breaking in terms of bringing sophisticated trends to Downriver. While a liquor license is still pending at the time of this article, the fifth bar that Meyer has to offer is exactly what it sounds like–a bar. Can you possibly think of a better way to treat yourself after a day of rejuvenation than with a smooth cocktail or a glass of bubbly? I think not. With so much that Downtown Beauty Bar has to offer–it’s ideal for the upcoming change in season. The summer sun has been unforgiving. While beating the heat hasn’t been easy, the necessary steps to repair the damage inflicted upon your skin are now easier than ever. They offer acne treatments for those who plan on returning to school for the fall semester. You only get one chance to

THE FIORELLI FAMILY has been a part of
Downriver for the last 42 years. In 1954, Luigi Fiorelli moved with his family to Flat Rock, from Monterivoso, Italy, to work for Ford Motor Company. Throughout his 58 years with Ford Motor Company and later as a consultant for CPI – Contract Professionals, Luigi was always caring for his coworkers, friends, and family. Often, Luigi would invite his coworkers home to treat them to a delicious Italian meal and a glass of homemade wine. The matriarch of the family, Jeanine Fiorelli, would make sure everyone was well fed and enjoying themselves. From this humble beginning, three venues were established under the umbrella presently known as Fiorelli’s Restaurant Collection under the direction of John and Pam Fiorelli. Salute Special Events is an event space available to guests for their celebrations, including showers, graduation parties, memorial luncheons, weddings, anniversaries, and more. Able
to seat up to 120 guests, the room is decorated with a casually elegant style. Salute Special Events is available seven days a week for special events. The courteous and attentive staff are ready to accommodate customers, ensuring their event is an affair to remember. The ROC Restaurant and Wine Bar is an Italian boutique restaurant where customers can come and experience various dishes such as Spaghetti Tricolore, Sirloin Tagliata, and a selection of Certified Fresh Piedmontese steaks. The ROC offers an extensive wine collection, including wine imported from our family’s vineyard, Scacciadiavoli Cantina, in Montefalco, Italy. I assisted with small tasks such as washing salad or cutting vegetables, but after a few minutes in that kitchen I felt a calling to continue my career in this industry.” Over the years, Matteo has worked for and alongside many great chefs, and one major skill that they demanded was discipline. LAW
Jeffrey Forrester “Know that my door is always open to my community, Grosse Ile”
A FORMER St. Louis, MO resident, Jeffrey S. Forrester moved to Grosse Ile some 25 years ago. “Ford transferred me to Michigan to work in a new area of finance - information technology (IT).”
Being involved in the early emergence of PCs and networks at Ford, Jeff was called in to negotiate enterprise deals with large software companies such as Microsoft and Oracle. This encouraged him to pursue a degree in law at Detroit College of Law, graduating in 1999. Jeff continued his career at Ford and took an early retirement in 2006. He then pursued a second career in consulting and law. Jeff ’s IT expertise and work expanded to wireless networks and cell towers. And as a Grosse Ile Twp. Trustee (2004-2008) he began negotiating cell tower deals on behalf of the Township – a project that he still oversees some 18 years later. Jeff has worked with some of the best medical Malpractice and personal injury lawyers in the Michigan at his first office in Southfield, and his legal expertise has broadened to include many areas of law. “I returned to Grosse Ile to build a practice because frankly, I love this island. Now in my third year on the island, I’m excited to say we’ve become a full service, one-stop, law office that is really flourishing.”

John Serb Aims to make a difference in the Downriver community
AS OF SEPTEMBER it has be four years since
John Serb opened the Edward Jones Investments branch in Woodhaven, Michigan. He started on this path as a financial advisor with one goal in mind – to offer state-of-the art investment tools, coupled with a one-on-one approach to guidance for families with complex financial needs. John has extensive finance experience, having been in this industry for 14 years. Prior to opening his office, he worked in corporate finance. “In the corporate setting I wasn’t making a difference in anyone's lives,” John explained, “I wanted to have an impact on the community I'm from and work with individuals and families Downriver." Relationships are key, and in his view, meeting face to face and getting to know his clients on a personal level builds strong relationships. John's branch assists families and individuals with an array of financial needs such as, retirement
income strategies, wealth management, estate and legacy strategies, business retirement plans, and education savings. He accomplishes this through a proven, long-term investment philosophy that emphasizes quality and diversification. John normally starts his day by doing market research and catching up on market news. He’ll then review his clients’ portfolios that could be impacted based on the information he finds, then making those adjustments becomes his number one priority. After that, he’ll tend to his appointments for the day. "The majority of my day is consumed with portfolio reviews and trading. "I manage for the long-term through a proven investment philosophy that emphasizes quality and diversification"-John says. As a lifelong member of the Downriver community, John spends much time and effort getting to know his clients and understanding their needs. “The most fulfilling part about my job is the personal relationship that I have with my clients,” he said, “They truly become an extension of my family.”

Vet salute: Joe Berkey
AT 98-YEARS OLD, World War II veteran Joe Berkey is the oldest member of the VFW Grosse Ile Post 7310. Prior to joining The Post, Berkey was a science teacher. It wasn’t until he retired that he decided to join the VFW, an organization dedicated to honoring war veterans.
About VFW Post 7310
Overseas, Joe spent five years in the navy, joining one year before the United States became involved with World War II. He was 17years-old at the time, mere months away from turning 18. He says he joined the navy because a neighbor of his, who he calls “this young feller down the street,” wanted to join, but didn’t want to go alone. On a whim, Joe’s neighbor asked him to come along to the enlisting, where Joe was sold on the pitch that he could learn skills in the field - namely in the engine room - that would help him get a job once he returned home. At the time, the world was only just coming out of The Great Depression and jobs were especially hard to come by, so Joe decided that with his parent’s permission, joining the navy would be the ideal choice. Ironically, only Joe would end up going to the navy. The ‘feller” who convinced him to join failed to pass his physical due to a bad heart. After enlistment, recruits from Michigan and Ohio were sent to train in Norfolk, Vir-
With the end of summer upon us, back to school shopping done, many folks are looking for last-minute options to enjoy things as a family, the Grosse Ile VFW might be a great place to visit! For starters, you can stop by and check out a historical timeline of automobiles at the Post’s monthly car show. Excellent fun for all ages; featuring classic cars, trucks, army vehicles, and autos of all kinds. There are also a few concession stands to be found for food and drinks. This may be a great opportunity to start a family tradition

SALUTE
Vet salute: Joe Truxall NAVAL AIR STATION Grosse Ile served as the wartime naval base on the island from the moment it opened in 1927 right up until 1969. The base has a rich history rooted in World War II, American philosophies, and even housed notable former Navy pilots like The Price is Right host, Bob Barker. However, none of that history is as rich or worth praising as the military veterans who dedicated their time and service. Among those Grosse Ile vets is Joe Truxall. Around 13-years-old, Joe joined the Boy Scouts of America as a Sea Scout, young men and women who served between the ages of 14 and 20, focusing on community values and organizations. Joe then joined the military in 1948 at age 18 through the Scouts, staying until after the Korean War. “The Sea Scouts don’t do what the Boy Scouts do,” Joe clarifies. “We learned about how to survive.” He explains that he and ten fellow Sea Scouts were sent to Grosse Ile during the Korean War where another 6,000 were already stationed. As
Joe recalls, “they took me in a helicopter to Grosse Ile, put me on a little island out there on the other end of Lake Erie and dropped me in the middle of it all. And that’s why I joined, because all of the Sea Scout leaders were out there in Grosse Ile.”

If you’re still looking for something fun and creative, the Post will also be sponsoring in the island’s weeklong “Paint The Town Red!” festival later this fall where people come to enjoy the seasonal festivities. Many fun, inviting, attractions will be featured as well as special musical stylings of Post 7310 Commander, Barry Van Engelen. These are two very exciting upcoming events in which you can participate to get reconnected with your community as well as take a small moment to help the VFW in their mission. See you there!

ginia. Joe found himself assigned to Platoon 31, where after six weeks, he earned the honor of being chosen as that platoon’s honor man, the best sailor with the highest grade point average for the enlisted class at their respective platoon. Upon graduation, he went into service, boarding the USS Wasp, where he was assigned to the auxiliary division on the ship alongside 2,000 crew members. For the next year and a half, Joe served on the diesel engines until their ship was torpedoed and sunken. Joe moved on to serve in the South Pacific and wouldn’t return to America for two and a half years. 1990 was the year that Joe Berkey joined the VFW Post. “I’d also like to mention that when I joined The VFW Post, after being a member for a year or so, they made me commander of The Post here on the island … from 1993 to 1996.” Even after his commandership ended, Joe remained an active member, making a point to attend every single meeting up until recently. Now, Joe is most concerned with staying home and caring for his sick wife. “I have to be here next to her and taking care of her.” Despite being less active now with VFW under unfortunate circumstances, Joe Berkey is proud to have dedicated over 30 years of his time to the Post. Not only as a commander but as a quartermaster and historian. The D Profile would like to take a moment to thank Joe for serving his country and for his time telling us his story. We also thank his daughter Ann-Marie for helping to connect us for an incredibly pleasant chat chronicling a veteran’s incredible history.
From there, Joe proceeded to serve on the island between 1950 and 1955, though his entire service time ran from 1948 to 1960. He was in the reserves, but served full-time when he went to Korea. Returning from Korea, Joe stayed to make up his seven years of service before ultimately deciding to retire. For all of the time, sweat, tears, and effort that he served at his naval base, Joe says he would not change a thing and seems pretty happy with how it turned out. At 91-years-old, Joe lives in his Taylor home alone, his wife having died some time ago. He is also battling a case of spinal cancer. “They’re giving

me treatment for it,” says Joe. “It’s just shots, so I’m not taking chemo, just the shots. So far so good, now. I’ve had it for almost a year. I’m not in any pain yet, but hang in there,” Joe adds good naturedly. Despite his ailments, it’s clear that Joe Truxall can find a reason to smile every day, especially when his eight kids visit often. On top of that, he’s happy and at peace with how his time in the military turned out, and we thank Mr. Truxall for his service.

Wounded America Motorcycle Ride for Vets EVER SINCE Marlon Brando donned a
leather jacket in The Wild One, the motorcycle rider has become synonymous with individuality, rebellion, and living a life outside the confines of the law. While there’s no shortage of this conception to be found in popular culture, it can be slightly misleading. On July 10th of this year, several riders started their engines and took to the road. Not in a display of posturing or claiming new territory–but to bring awareness to a worthy cause and give back to those who have served in our armed forces. Continued on page B 38

“Because buying or selling a HOME is so much more than just a house.”
Continued from page B 37
The Wounded America Motorcycle Ride is a near perfect example of one this country’s greatest virtues–a combined effort from many different people in the pursuit of a common goal. For over a decade, several businesses and individuals have come together and contributed financial support and brought awareness to the plight of our injured military veterans. “We work with nearly a dozen local Rotary Clubs and many small businesses to raise funds for this cause, it gives them an opportunity to give back to our veterans.” Explains Lawrence Wright, “The ride was organized to help out military veterans who are struggling to get help.” All too often, many things are taken for granted and sacrifice is rarely thought about during the course of a working day. Two organizations involved with the ride are Downriver for Veterans and Foundation 14. Both have put a great deal of time and effort to ensure that the brave men and women who have been afflicted with combat injuries and PTSD are properly taken care of. Making their sacrifices aware to a larger audience is itself an act of charity, and one that we should take a minute to understand and appreciate. If you’re interested in contributing to this cause in any way, please take a moment to visit foundation14.org or downriverforveterans.org. And always remember that saying thank you to someone who served costs nothing, but is more than worth its weight in gold.
