SAILING FOR LIFE MULTI-GENERATIONAL SPORT A SAFE, NON-CONTACT SPORT FOR INDIVIDUALS, TEAMS, BOYS AND GIRLS
”I alwa ys wa n ted to Sail”
JR. SAILING - BEGINNER & INTERMEDIATE Bodies of water are everywhere. Here is a way for kids to learn how to safely enjoy the water and respect it while learning to sail. Taught by US Sailing certified instructors in club boats at the Grosse Ile Yacht Club, the programs are open to the local communities for kids 8 to 18. Our mission is for the students to HAVE FUN while learning the essentials of boat handling, seamanship, and water safety in a SAFE, learn-at-your-own-pace environment. Half day sessions, morning or afternoon, are available Monday through Wednesday for three weeks with Session 1 starting in June and Session 2 starting in July. As with any sport, multiple sessions will improve competence and the exposure to varying weather conditions builds confidence and knowledge. Sailing is really a fun way to apply the STEM learning process. What shape are sails and why? How does geometry affect my sailing? Life Lessons Learned from Sailing are fitting for kids and adults alike. Sailing teaches us: to be prepared, teamwork, patience, decision-making, communication, confidence, and responsibility. Sailing teaches honesty and the importance of playing by the rules. Sailing teaches us how to deal with the unknown and to operate in a constantly changing environment.
ADULT OR FAMILY CLASSES
JR. RACE TEAM
Join other individuals; bring a friend or your family to learn basic sailing techniques taught both on the water and ashore. 12 hours of evening lessons or condensed daytime lessons available May thru August.
Jr. Race Team sailors can take the basic skills they have learned in Jr. Sailing and hone them against their peers throughout Metro Detroit and Western Lake Erie.
INTRODUCTORY FIRST SAIL Bring family or friends on an introductory two hour evening or daytime pleasure sail to see local island views. Boats are stable 20 foot keelboats with large cockpits able to hold 4-5 adults.
HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY SAILING TEAM Grosse Ile Yacht Club and the Jr. Sailing program congratulate the Grosse Ile High School Varsity Sailing Team - the 2018 Michigan High School State Champions. See your school’s Athletic Department for more information.

TIPS
EASY STEPS TO PROTECT OUR WATER Over three million people depend on our lakes and streams for their drinking water. Here are several simple steps you can take in your home and yard to protect our lakes and streams. Contributed by SEMCOG
TIPS DID YOU KNOW that over three million people depend on our lakes and streams for their drinking water? And that in Southeast Michigan there are over 300,000 registered boaters and 3.5 million people visit a local park each year? With this many people depending on our lakes and streams for drinking water and recreation, we need to be careful how we treat our water. You might not be able to see the stream or lake from your house, but it’s there! It might be a small stream or ditch or even a storm drain in the street. All of these lead directly to our lakes and streams. So, what we do at home affects our water! Here are seven simple steps you can take in your home and yard to protect our lakes and streams. Help keep pollution out of storm drains. Storm drains lead directly to our lakes and streams. So, never dump oil, pet waste, leaves, dirty water, or anything down a storm drain. Remember, only rain in the drain. Fertilize caringly and sparingly. Excess fertilizer that gets into storm drains pollutes our lakes by causing large algae blooms and using up oxygen fish need to survive. Sweep excess fertilizer back onto your lawn, use a low or no phosphorus fertilizer, and have your soil tested to see what, if any, fertilizer is needed.
Carefully store and dispose of household cleaners, chemicals, and oil. Instead of putting hazardous products like antifreeze, motor oil, and pesticides in the trash, down the storm drain, or on the ground, take them to a local hazardous waste collection day. Clean up after your pet. Whether on a walk or in your yard, promptly clean up after your pet. Not only will be you a good neighbor, you will also protect our water from harmful bacteria. Practice good car care. Consider taking your car to a car wash or washing your car on the grass. Choose earth friendly landscaping. Protect your pets, kids, and the environment by using pesticides sparingly. Also, water your lawn only when it needs it and choose plants native to Michigan. Save water. Over watering our lawns can easily carry pollution to the storm drains and to our lakes and streams. Consider using a broom instead of a hose to clean sidewalks and driveways. Direct hoses and sprinklers on the lawn, not the driveway. This will help save our lakes and streams and save you money.
For more easy steps on protecting our lakes and streams, visit semcog.org Remember, our water is our future – and it’s ours to protect!
SCOOP IT. BAG IT. PITCH IT IN THE TRASH.
PET MEDICATIONS & SHARPS.
Is it important to scoop poop? Picking up pet waste and disposing of it in the trash keeps our sidewalks clean and our neighbors happy. But it also protects water quality, keeping our water resources safe for drinking and swimming. Why is poop a problem? There are currently 72.8 million dogs in the United States – their waste is not suitable for compost or fertilizer. It can carry diseases and bacteria, which are unsafe for humans. When it rains, bacteria from pet waste left on the ground can wash directly into storm drains and drainage ditches and eventually into our waterways… unfiltered and untreated.
Research shows that sewer systems do not remove remove flushed medicines completely. Improperly discarded sharps can end up in places where they are a danger. Don’t put medications down the toilet or sink. Safely dispose of unwanted pet medications through drug take-back programs offered by pharmacies and police departments. Safely dispose of sharps. Place sharp items in a hard plastic or metal container with a screw-on or tightly secured lid and taking them to a household hazardous waste collection event or drop off location in your county.
The ADW and its 24 member communities are partnering with over 150 local veterinarians, pet supply retailers and service providers to protect water quality by promoting the importance of proper pet waste disposal. For “H2O Heroes Scoop Poop” campaign information, please contact Pam Labadie, campaign coordinator at 734-769-5123 ext. 602 or plabadie@hrwc.org
STORM DRAINS , It s important to monitor and clean storm drains. Contributed by GROSSE ILE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SERVICES
NEWS THE STORM DRAINS (sometimes referred to as catch basins) that you see on county roads allow rain water to drain from the roads. They are particularly important during storms when the high volume of water falling on roads would otherwise cause flooding. Storm drains have grids to prevent large objects from falling into the storm sewer system. It’s important to monitor and clean storm drains to prevent road flooding, property damage and hazards to the public while driving. You can help by using a rake to clear leaves, limbs and debris from the catch basin. Place leaves and twigs in a paper
bag for recycling. Do not attempt to remove the grate, only the debris on top of the grate. When the forecast calls for heavy rainfall or snow and ice, remove debris from the catch basin before a storm. After a storm, maintain the openings to catch basins by clearing away any snow or ice. Create a 10 to 12-inch path along the curb or edge of the road for melting snow and ice to drain to the catch basin. So, if you have a storm drain in your neighborhood, please inspect it regularly and remove the debris to help keep our roads safe and storm drains clear and clean.
If you find a catch basin filled with debris below the grate or you have trouble removing the debris on the grate – please contact the Grosse Ile DPS at 734-676-4422 ext. 228 or 734-676-5959.

Landscape practices can affect the environment, especially streams and rivers. Contributed by GROSSE ILE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SERVICES
FA C T S HOMEOWNERS TEND TO use an over-abundance of fertilizers and pesticides on their lawn. It is estimated that some homeowners use ten times more pesticides per acre than farmers. The excess chemicals can run off the property into storm drains,
which in turn will affect nearby creeks and streams. It is important to choose a fertilizer that contains the right amount of nitrogen and potassium, as phosphorus is a major pollutant within the Rouge River Watershed.
TIPS TO PROTECT WATER quality, it is recommended that you choose a slow-release fertilizer that contains no phosphorus. Also, spring applications can actually harm lawns by promoting more blade growth than root growth, making the lawn more susceptible to drought.
Apply the fertilizers in the fall to promote deep, healthy root systems and to minimize weed and disease problems. Using the correct ingredients and the right timing, our community can have healthy lawns while still protecting our water quality!

| G R O S S E I L E M A G . C O M Spring/Summer 2019
Q: What is Islandfest? A: It’s a three-day celebration to showcase our beautiful island community and all that we have to offer. What started as the Azalea Festival in 1984 at Westcroft Gardens, moved to the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport on the south end of the island in the year 2002. Now, it’s become a huge three-day event with over 20,000 visitors. Q: Is it open to more than Grosse Ile residents? A: Absolutely, it’s become one of the biggest and most attended festivals in the Southeast Michigan area. We get people from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and all over Michigan. The Grosse Ile Soccer Association (GISA) is in its
fifth year and that brings in thousands of people. GISA also has players that come from the tri-state area who attend the festival. Q: Do you see growth in Grosse Ile businesses? A: We get many nonprofit organizations who come and set up their booth at the festival, which is one of their biggest fundraisers. One annual favorite is the TAILS auction. It also benefits the local restaurants that aren’t at the festival, and the community as a whole. Our marinas and yacht clubs are all filled to capacity with people coming down to hop off and call one of our car companies to get over to the festival. It benefits everybody in the community. Q: What is the cost to get in? A: It’s free. There is no cost to get into the event and parking is free. There is a cost for the carnival rides and helicopter rides. A: What other attractions will be there? We have helicopter rides and 18 carnival rides. We also have a petting zoo, fireworks on Saturday night, a foam party on both Friday and Saturday night, all of which are free. Q: How is it able to be free? A: We’re a small commission doing big things. All of the funds for this event are brought in from private donors, sponsorships, and vendors/crafters. A list of sponsors can be found on our website. Q: Are there any changes from 2018? A: The petting zoo is new this year, we extended the foam party to two nights, and moved the fireworks to Saturday night. We’re also getting a new carnival ride geared towards teens and adults to add to the wonderful lineup. So we're adding new things, but keeping the classic favorites. Q: What about the band lineup? A: Friday Night we have Atomic Radio, Saturday we have The DR5 opening for Wisteria, and Sundays bands are to be announced. Q: Where can people find more information? A: Our website is grosseileislandfest.com, and it’s updated weekly. They can also follow us on Facebook. Our recreation number is 734-6752364 for any information they can’t find on the site. Q: Any other information? A: We need volunteers because we start cleaning up the hanger the day after Memorial Day, and we need people all the way through June 2nd. Our site even has a breakdown of the times we need people for and what kind of job it is.

Summer will soon be in full swing! MY MILKSHAKE BRINGS all the boys to my yard, darn right its better than yours. Amor, Amor, spring and love is in the air. These dog gone good looking fellas are a few of my buddies, Mr. Chubzz Mazzola is actually a dweller in a the city of Detroit but comes and visits his grandparents on the island, Ms. Audrey and Mr. Larry. My big black lab buddy, Zeek Milkins visits almost daily. His mom Ms. Diane and Mr. Bruce are awesome neighbors. Mr. Bruce always has a milk cookie in his pocket and sometimes this metal can that says, “Beer”. I loooooove when the sunshine is streaming through the windows even when stinky cat (Menka the Spyhnx) is trying to invade my space, doesn’t that silly feline know that she will get sun burn with all her nakedness… Well my first pup cup at the Island Tasty Freeze was a wonderful experience; their outdoor patio is very pooch friendly. But a fashionable collar and a matching leash are highly recommended especially for our frisky friends. Obviously whoever has the most epic bandanna accessory wins. Accessories of any kind, if needed, can be purchased along with cotton candy, a carnival ride, grrrrreat music and fireworks at Island Fest, May 31, June 1,2, 2019. My daddy “C” has been endlessly putting in long
hours since last year’s festival, along with his awesome commissioners and Director Mzz. Kim. Visit grosseileislandfest.com for all the dogtails, oops, I mean details. Summer will soon be in full swing, so please keep us pups in check when boating. While most of us “not me I sink like a rock”, enjoy being with our water loving families, we need to always pay attention. Currents can be swift and water’s deep and we all just want to have a wonderful season. Don’t forget to show a little pride in the month of June for me and my dad’s. So may all of you have an amazing summer and if you see me out and about at the Thursday night summer concerts at Water’s Edge or on Macomb street enjoying a stroll, even over at Centennial Farm at the dog park, sampling the seasonal scents or hanging my drooling head out the car window. Say hello with a big paw up! As the visions of sugar plums fade into the distance, we look forward to the spring crocus and daffodils to start popping through the ground.

Life is a movement journey, here’s how physical therapy can help – VELI SIPILA PT, OMT, FAAOMPT ORTHOSPORT PHYSICAL THERAPY
Now that spring has arrived, temperatures are starting to rise in many parts of the country. And that means the transition from heating our homes to cooling our homes is right around the corner. No matter what method you use to cool your home during the warm spring and summer months (central air conditioning, window units, or fans and dehumidifiers), each spring you cross your fingers that your approach still works. If not, you might be calling an expert for a tune-up, or in extreme circumstances, you might need a complete overhaul. Just like an AC system that has probably been dormant for many months of the year, a body that hasn’t been physically engaged on a regular basis may have trouble getting started again. And yet, this time of year, the warm temps draw many people to city and suburban streets, tracks and trails, ready to take that first run of the season. A good percentage of these spring runners haven’t kept up their strides throughout the winter. It should come as no surprise that a 4-mile run for a previously inactive person is going to stir up a few aches and pains. Especially as we age, our ability to move undergoes changes. But whether we’re talking about a college student or a retiree, returning to an activity without proper planning is a recipe for disaster. That’s where physical therapy comes in. Physical therapists are trained to treat injuries and ease pain, but they can also help their paContinued on page 40

tients prevent injuries and safely prepare to participate in new activities. Think of physical therapists as “movement consultants” who can ensure that your body is physically ready to tackle a new challenge–or resume a favorite leisure activity. Here’s another example to illustrate what we’re talking about: Let’s say that you play in an adult soccer league and you’re preparing to play in your first game of the season in a few weeks. You probably hung up your cleats when the last season ended months ago, but expect to pick up just where you left off. But it’s simply too much to ask for your 2019 debut on the field to be on the same level as the last game of the previous season, when you likely had reached peak performance. This is a good time for your PT to step in and help you shake off the rust. The rehab professional can customize an exercise plan to help you slowly return to sport and avoid an injury that could sideline you for the whole season. Or like cleaning the filters before firing up your air conditioner for the first time this year, the rehab expert can help to ensure that your body is prepared to return to its former activity level following a hiatus.

JANE FIJAL IS a busy woman. With such a full plate, you might be surprised to learn that Jane is also profoundly deaf. Jane’s education growing up was a mixture of mainstream schooling and dedicated practice with her mother, Gail Albin. When Jane was seven, her father’s job transferred him to Australia and the entire family moved with him.

Even now, Jane enjoys traveling and has visited all 50 states as well as many places across the world. After Jane’s family moved back to Michigan, she attended Central Michigan, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, then a master’s degree in health services administration. She went on to work with the Methodist Children's Home Society, leaving there to work at the Wyandotte Hospital. It wasn’t until after entering the workforce that Jane met the man she would marry. “He walked into the room, and I did a double take,” she says. “There was something I couldn’t put my finger on.” They hit it off and have now been married 27 years. Mr. Fijal is also deaf. For folks that don’t know anyone who is deaf, Jane says, “Don’t be afraid of us. There are different types of deaf people. If they are oral, look at them while they are talking. Offer to write notes or use text on your phone. Body gestures are also helpful.” To Jane, being deaf is a different ability, not a disability. “This person can do anything but hear, but they can do anything.”
