Studio G West Owner and Artistic Director, Gina Dudash, who has more than 30 years of experience in the dance industry, provides a wealth of knowledge, as well as enrichment opportunities EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGER

EARLY IN THE Covid-19 restriction orders,
Studio G Performing Arts Center owner and artistic director, Gina Dudash, decided to move all instruction online to Zoom. This protected the dancers and offered them an opportunity to stay in shape while maintaining some normalcy during an unprecedented time. As business restrictions have relaxed, Studio G is embracing the return of in-person instruction. “Studio G is all geared up for an amazing season, and we can’t wait to get started!” says Studio G artistic director, Gina Dudash. “After a long reprieve due to covid, the entire faculty is excited to get back to it! The comeback will be even stronger than the setback!”
PROGRAM As usual Gina says she has every intention of continuing to provide the best quality dance instruction. Her main focus is on training well-rounded dancers who have a strong foundation and are adept at all forms and genres of dance.
“We train our kids to be able to go out into the world and work. If they want to dance after they leave high school they have every tool to succeed. If they don’t choose to dance, that’s fine too, but Its important not to water down the training” says Gina. “While they are training in our studio they are getting 110% of not only my knowledge but the knowledge of our other fabulous educators as well as getting numerous opportunities we provide for them.” Dudash who has 30 years in the industry, and her instructors, provide a wealth of knowledge and enrichment opportunities. Many Studio G dancers have gone on to professional careers in everything from Broadway Tours to working in renowned institutions such as Disney World, Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Lines, professional dance companies around the U.S. and at the collegiate level; Point Park University, Grand Valley State, AMDA New York, as well as college dance teams, Indiana University, University of Michigan, Wayne State, and Eastern Michigan to name a few. Even for students who decide to pursue opportunities other than dance, the skills and discipline they learn at Studio G will help carry them through other parts of life. Dance knowledge and experience alone opens up opFall/Winter 2021-22

portunities to support themselves financially while in high school and in college. Many of Gina’s high school age students become assistant instructors at the studio and teach dance camps. As they get older they can venture into jobs with one of her other companies, EnerGy National Dance competitions, which does a Regional and National competition and convention tour throughout the United States. For Studio G dancers, one thing is certain, they all gain similar qualities. Qualities like discipline, accountability and commitment, and the ability to communicate as well as working well with others, are just some of the lessons the students walk away with.
CLASSES Registrations for classes at Studio G West in Brownstown are being accepted throughout September 2021. “We’re excited to get back to dance in Brownstown!” Studio G West in Brownstown is offering a a variety of classes, including Parent-Tot for 2-3 year olds, ‘A fun filled class for those little ones that are not ready to step inside the classroom without Mom’; Pre-Dance for 3-4 year olds; and other classes that are available for ages of 5 years to teen (curriculum includes Ballet, Tap, and Jazz, as well as Hip Hop and tumbling). Classes are held on Wednesdays starting from 4 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. - depending on the class. Not only is their Brownstown location Studio G West, up and running, but their main school in Grosse Ile is back to business as usual, too. Studio G - Grosse Ile is home to the award winning Studio G company, the nationally acclaimed and award winning competitive team. The Grosse Ile studio location boasts over 6,000 square feet of training space and has a vast line up of classes. For more information please see the Studio G website: studiogpac.com

The owner of West Road Coins gives a lot of hard-earned money to help others in need because he feels it is the right thing to do
Salute: Rusty Hohman EDIT JOHN HALL
PHOTOS ROBBIN MOYER
RUSTY HOHMAN KNOWS what it’s like to need a helping hand. The owner of West Road Coins in Trenton gives a lot of hardearned money to help others in need because he feels it is the right thing to do - and because he has a personal connection to heartache. Hohman family’s house caught fire and was destroyed. The Salvation Army helped his
family with everything that they needed in a difficult situation. He gives back to charities and organizations as he feels indebted for the help he and his family received. “If I know a group is legitimate and where the money goes and that they do a good job at helping people, I am okay about donating to them,” he explains.
Rusty Hohman, the owner of West Road Coins, helps others in need because he has a personal connection to heartache.
“ When I was young, our home burned down...The Salvation Army was there to help us with whatever we needed, and they just kept on helping. I still feel I owe them a debt for that one act.” – Rusty Hohman” For additional info on the current gold or silver prices, coins, stamps, and more, please contact Rusty at 734-362-8229.

If someone needs help I will reach into my pocket.” Yet Hohman doesn’t give to charity in order to shine a brighter light on West Road Coins and doesn’t attribute any business success to his philanthropy. But that’s okay. “I sleep good at night, knowing I have helped. If everyone gave to charity, the world would be a much better place,” he says.

FINANCE
John Serb Aims to make a difference in the Downriver community
AS OF SEPTEMBER it has be four years since John Serb opened the Edward Jones Investments branch in Woodhaven, Michigan. He started on this path as a financial advisor with one goal in mind – to offer state-of-the art investment tools, coupled with a one-on-one approach to guidance for families with complex financial needs. John has extensive finance experience, having been in this industry for 14 years. Prior to opening his office, he worked in corporate finance. “In the corporate setting I wasn’t making a difference in anyone's lives,” John explained, “I wanted to have an impact on the community I'm from and work with individuals and families Downriver." Relationships are key, and in his view, meeting face to face and getting to know his clients on a personal level builds strong relationships. John's branch assists families and individuals with an array of financial needs such as, retirement
income strategies, wealth management, estate and legacy strategies, business retirement plans, and education savings. He accomplishes this through a proven, long-term investment philosophy that emphasizes quality and diversification. John normally starts his day by doing market research and catching up on market news. He’ll then review his clients’ portfolios that could be impacted based on the information he finds, then making those adjustments becomes his number one priority. After that, he’ll tend to his appointments for the day. "The majority of my day is consumed with portfolio reviews and trading. "I manage for the long-term through a proven investment philosophy that emphasizes quality and diversification"-John says. As a lifelong member of the Downriver community, John spends much time and effort getting to know his clients and understanding their needs. “The most fulfilling part about my job is the personal relationship that I have with my clients,” he said, “They truly become an extension of my family.”

Our School District ABOUT
WBEF Today it’s more important than ever to come together as a community — which is what the Woodhaven-Brownstown Education Foundation is all about: Community. Founded on the premise that it takes an entire community to support education, the Foundation was created to provide an avenue for businesses and members of our community to contribute to the education of our children — and to strengthen the future of our school district. With funds it raises through donations and special events, the WBEF has awarded more than $260,000 in grants over the past nine years to district teachers for creative and exciting educational opportunities. In addition, some of the awardwinning school programs the WBEF have funded include School/Parent Partnerships, FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics, Elementary Reading Initiatives, Teen Entrepreneur Software and No Child Without a Lunch. Please consider donating to the Foundation. Our community thanks you!

In today’s busy world, the need to stay connected has become part of daily life. It’s become especially important for parents who need to stay in touch with their children – not only about their social lives, but also about their scholastic lives. To that end, our district has a number of ways to stay in touch electronically with our students, our parents, and our community. First, of course, is our newly designed district website: mywbsd.org This site hosts core district information, as well as links to every school and program within our community. Drop downs and clickable links can put you in touch with whatever program or service you need. But our digital footprint doesn’t end with our website. Parents can use our special parent portal to check the status of their students’ progress in real time.

Maple Grove Virtual School Since 20212, our district has offered an alternative to our traditional high school: Maple Grove Virtual School. A completely online high school, Maple Grove offers a full slate of courses designed to get any student through to graduation. Students enrolled in Maple Grove not only complete courses at their own pace, but they're also able to take AP courses that grant college credit. To date, more than 150 students have graduated from Maple Grove.
Learning and Leading for Tomorrow
In addition, our staff offers face-to-face and digital support to each student. Students in Maple Grove who want to pursue vocational training can also enroll in the DCTC program (see story below). Besides the non-traditional student, Maple Grove is an ideal fit for home-schooled students whose parents otherwise need to get their own state-approved lesson plans and programs.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
In education, everything begins at the beginning – and today, that “beginning” is earlier than ever. Studies have shown that the earlier a child enters a structured educational environment, the better she will do in later grades. To help give their youngsters a leg up on their education we have a number of early childhood development programs aimed at doing just that:
Each of our elementary schools — Bates, Erving, Gudith, Wegienka, and Yake are Young5/K-5 educational facilities dedicated to developing a community of independent and productive lifelong learners. We are proud to announce that Erving and Wegienka Elementary Schools were Bates named reward schools by the MDOE 22811 Gudith Rd in 2019. ABOUT
Our Schools & DCTC In order to get a jump on the kinds of jobs that may be available to them after they graduate, many WB students take advantage of one of the most unique programs in the nation: The Downriver Career Technical Consortium (DCTC). Founded in 1965, the DCTC offers a way for local districts to share vocational education programs. Today, the DCTC consists of nine local districts that share more than 32 programs.
Learning and Leading for Tomorrow
Woodhaven High School is home to courses in business management, dental technology, finance, marketing, graphics communications, welding and cosmetology. Many DCTC programs offer college credit, some offer state licensure, most provide math and visual and applied arts credit and some provide science credit. To learn more about how your student could benefit from a DCTC enhanced experience, visit: dctc-cte.org
ABOUT
COLLEGE BOUND In 2016, the WBSD partnered with Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) to offer an Early/Middle College (EMC) program. ECM is a blend of high school and college courses leading to a tuition-free associate degree while still in high school. We are proud to announce that one student has successfully earned EMT certification and at the end of the 201920 school year, 26 students will have successfully earned their high school diploma as well as an associate degree. We are proud to report that, to date, the WBSD program is WCCCD’s largest EMC program. Our students are taking full advantage of this unique opportunity, and the EMC program is one of the district’s greatest successes.
In the ninth and 10th grades, students take both district and college courses at the same time, with the latter taught by college staff at PH Middle School and WHS. In 11th and 12th grades, students take courses at WHS and on the college’s Taylor campus. The student would finish up his or her college degree courses the first year out of high school and then receive both a high school diploma and an associate degree. In addition to the free tuition, the district provides books, fees and supplies to all students. If accepted into the program students and their parents will attend an orientation prior to actually joining the program. To learn more, contact Curriculum Director Stacy Vespremi at:
