Is skinyourfeeling Dry, Dull?
Don’t fret…Summer is in full swing, and not only is it time to transition your wardrobe but your skin as well!
BY CAMILLE MEYER –DOWNTOWN BEAUTY BARGt’s summer-time, and that time of year when I like to preach about SPF, SPF, SPF! Though I believe writing a complete column on the subject is 100% warranted, I have chosen another topic that is just as important when it comes to “aging gracefully,” Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). But before I get to that, I would like to remind you of the importance of sunscreen and remember that sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging and that two people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour. So please apply SPF all year round. Ok, now on to TEWL…
When it comes to Summer’s humidity aiding the skins’ hydration levels, it doesn’t get better than those hot few months! During June, July and August, there’s an abundance of moisture in the air to give us the hydration that our skin craves. Our skin loves moisture for many reasons, but the most important is, it allows us to maintain a healthy skin barrier and prevent Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). By not properly hydrating the skin and giving it the nourishment it needs, our barrier wall begins to break down and so does our collagen and elastin.
WHAT IS TRANSEPIDERMAL WATER LOSS (TEWL)?
In a nutshell, TEWL is when the skin is being depleted of hydration at a faster rate than it is being replenished. As the skin becomes dehydrated, the barrier wall is compromised, which accelerates TEWL and the premature aging process. Though TEWL can happen naturally as we age, there are other contributors, such as air conditioning, over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, not using the appropriate products for your skin type, using poor-quality products, extreme sun exposure, medications, and of course, the one we all struggle with, not drinking enough water.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM EXPERIENCING TRANSEPIDERMAL WATER LOSS?
Classic signs of TEWL are increased visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, tightness,
Getting an invitation to a college graduation party may seem normal but have you ever been to a senior citizen’s college graduation?
Carole Pettitt celebrated her 75th birthday with a bachelors degree for management in hand after life well lived in our wonderful woodhaven community.
Attending college as an English major out of high school, Carole worked to pay off student loans before meeting her husband. Deciding to get married and start a family, Carole worked to pay off her student loans and both saved up a modest nest egg fund which later brought them to Woodhaven in 1972 after moving from St. Louis, MO.
Carole recounts the long journey that brought her to Woodhaven. Reciting businesses long gone
as well as those that stood the test of time.
“My husband worked as an automotive engineer with Chrysler and traveled from our apartment in St. Louis to Detroit. After a few fair years we decided to find somewhere quiet, cozy and beautiful to build our own home. Woodhaven was just forest, railroad tracks and farmlands as far as the eye could seeclear to Ohio even- so we picked a lot, talked to a builder and built our home. We retired and traveled the world always coming back to the comfort of woodhaven, we’ll likely never leave.”
– CaroleWhen the kids had grown, the two retired, setting out to traverse the world. Covid hindered many of their plans leaving Carole
thinking about what she could do to fill the space between when she realized she had unfinished business with rounding out her education. Opting for an online college where she could remain flexible in her retirement. Graduating October 10th and receiving her diploma on her birthday October 30th, A celebration was held earlier this year.
“The world tells young people that they have to decide what they want to do with their lives too soon and I’m living proof of that. I went back after a lifetime to finish what I started and show my daughters and their daughters that you’re never too old, you’re never stuck going one direction.”

flaking, rough texture, discomfort, drydull skin (face and body), and being unusually thirsty to name a few. It is normal to experience some degree of TEWL throughout the year, but there are steps you can take to reverse dermal dehydration and achieve healthy, glowing skin again.

Makayla Green notes how Green’s Family Cleaning Services provides her the opportunity to give back to the community, something that is “very important to me and my company”
EDIT KENNETH DAVIS // PHOTOS TRACIE SEELEYEstablished in 2017, Green’s Family Cleaning Services is a Downriver-based business providing top-quality commercial and residential cleaning services to clients in Woodhaven and surrounding areas.
“My favorite thing is that we're family-owned and operated,” said Makayla Green, who owns the company along with her husband Robert. “So it’s a really big family-like feel, and I love that I’m able to make that known to anybody who hires us.”
Regarding family, it was the birth of Makayla’s daughter in 2016 that acted as a catalyst for her starting her own business. She was working for a credit union at the time, and the long hours ate into a lot of quality time with her baby.
It even caused her to miss an important milestone.
“I just had my daughter, and I missed her rolling over for the first time, so I looked into ways that I could make good money without going back to school, something I could do to earn good
money fairly quickly without working such long hours,” explained Makayla. “I read an article about house cleaners making on average $25 an hour to start off.” With that in mind, Makayla began her cleaning service part time at first and said it just grew from there.
“We started with just house cleaning, and then we added office cleaning,” she said. “And when my husband came on in
2020 we started doing carpet and area rugs, tile and grout, upholstery and air duct cleaning.” Today, the thriving business also offers furniture and vehicle interior cleaning. They boast a large clientele and have seven employees. And all of Green’s cleaning technicians are certified.
Makayla also explains how Green’s provides her the opportunity to give back to the community, something that is “very, very important to me and my company.”
One of the ways in which Green’s gives back is through a partnership with Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit organization that offers cancer patients free house cleaning throughout the United States and Canada. “What the company does is gives two consecutive free cleanings for people who either have a child who has cancer or they have cancer themselves,” Makayla explained.
The team at Green’s Family Cleaning Services takes great pride in everything they do and always strive to surpass clients’ expectations. ◆
ABOUT
Real Estate 3000
Erica Hussey, daughter-in-law of Paul Hussey, likes to think of her customers as family
BY JASON KLAMMPaul Hussey of Real Estate 3000 has been in the real estate business for 48 years. A veteran honorably discharged from the military due to an injury aboard his ship, Paul returned home needing a plan for a new career. While at a job he took as a grocery bagger, a realtor he met there saw something special in Paul and decided to become his mentor. Paul never looked back. From then on, his real estate business continued growing in rental, residential and commercial properties. Have you seen the tallest flag on Telegraph Road? That’s his flying high with pride. Selling properties in the Downriver area has since become a family affair, as well.
Paul’s daughter-in-law Erica Hussey is a second-generation American, Woodhaven High School alumni, and University of Michigan graduate with a degree in finance. Erica built upon the foundation her own family laid – her father having moved to De-
troit as a Hungarian refugee with only $20 in his pocket. She met her husband, Eric, in 1999, the same year Real Estate 3000 was established, and the business became a part of their lives. Her success is attributable to empathy, pure and simple. She prefers “treating everybody as if they were my own family. I have personally purchased a lot of real estate, so I go through the transaction as if it were my own, making sure my clients' wants and needs are met.”
Erica started writing mortgages as a loan officer when she first entered the real estate industry in 2004. In 2007, she became a licensed real estate agent so she could start investing personally. Years of learning through her own residential rentals, full renovations, and flips brought Erica a wealth of valuable knowledge. “People kept asking me for advice to help them with the home buying process, renting, and investing, so real estate quickly became a full-time career.”
"Here at Real Estate 3000, real estate is our life. Once people understand the depth of our experience, they can truly trust our advice. 100% of our business has been referral based. You are not just another sale here at Real Estate 3000,"
stand what they're signing. I keep my phone on my hip and tell people to text me whenever they want.” Because the home buying/selling process is an important life event that can get emotional and stressful, Erica uses years of expertise to lay out the process one step at a time and bring clients peace of mind.
“We put a lot of pride into our properties,” says Erica.
Personally, Erica spent years volunteering at her children's school PTO, is a volunteer volleyball coach at Huron High School and active member in the Hungarian community, keeping her heritage alive at the Hungarian American Cultural Center. “They work with charities close to their hearts. We like to give back to the veteran and police communities as well as organizations associated with helping individuals with developmental disabilities,” she explains.
Erica explains. "We always provide quality service and that’s why we limit our clients so that each one has an ample amount of the time needed from us.”
Erica doesn’t want her clients to be afraid to ask questions and says, “I absolutely hate it when people don't under-
On top of finding people homes, Real Estate 3000 also invests in the local economy of Brownstown. Their current office used to be a simple residential home, and they converted it, to keep their business local.
The Hussey family also owns Huzzy’s car wash just down the street and helped develop other vacant buildings along Telegraph and neighboring communities.
With the help of her mother and sisters, Erica also cares for her brother Louie who has cerebral palsy. Erica says that her brother plays a huge part in developing who she is and is at the heart of everything she does. “Once my kids are grown and don't need me as much, I plan on spending more of my time advocating for those with disabilities.” ◆
Real Estate 3000 is located at 24568 Telegraph Rd., Brownstown. For additional information, please call Erica Hussey and Real Estate 3000 at 734-658-7039.

M A-Lot Sealcoat and Striping offers a host of pavement protection services, including hot rubber crack-fill, hot asphalt repair, catch basin repair and cement work. “If it has to do with a driveway or a parking lot, whatever your needs, we can get it done. We save and protect both driveways and parking lots!” said owner and Douglas Meyers.
Serving residential and commercial customers Downriver and across Southeastern Michigan, the business was started in the early 1980s by Meyers’s dad. “It’s been in the family my whole life,” Meyers said, adding that he changed the company’s name when he took over.
A-Lot Sealcoat And Striping
Sealcoat, Meyers explained, is an asphalt base mixed with silica sand and polymers that provides “a protective sealer over asphalt that stops it from getting brittle and cracking.” It prolongs the life expectancy of asphalt pavement by filling surface damage and keeping out UV rays, vehicle fluids and water.
“If you get an oil or gas leak, radiator fluid, or anything like that from a car, if you don’t have sealer on your driveway, those fluids will immediately start eating the asphalt away,” Meyers cautioned. Investing in sealcoat can save money long-term.
We take all precautions for the curing process to make sure you get the full protection from start to finish. Because warmer weather shortens curing time, the ideal time of year to sealcoat is from June to October, weather permitting (estimates/appointments are taken starting April 1st of each year). Meyers recommends customers start thinking now about scheduling work soon for summer (don’t fall for doorto-door scam with watered down sealcoat) call A-Lot Sealcoat and Striping.

Little announced that Superior Comfort’s facility is about to undergo renovations. He also mentioned that, regardless of any external changes, customers can expect the same high-quality service to which they’re accustomed.
“Superior Comfort is changing its appearance, so follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates,” Little said.
“We want everyone to know that Superior Comfort will have the same great service and team members,” Little noted. “We’re a young company that is here to keep your home comfy and cozy for years to come.” ◆

Cameron’s Hardwood Floor Refinishing
Floors go from dull, scratched and stained to glossy, clean and beautiful
M Floor refinishing is something you don’t usually think about until you need it. As Brian Cameron of Cameron’s Hardwood Floor Refinishing says, “It’s just one of those hidden businesses until you’re actually a homeowner and you’re like, ‘Hey, who does this?’” Your floor could need revitalizing for just about any reason, from pulling up some ugly old carpet, to stains and damage.
Brian has been installing and refinishing hardwood floors for 11 years now, and still gets excited by texts from his customers. Just look at the before and after photos on his Facebook page and you’ll see why. Floors go from dull, scratched and stained to glossy, clean and beautiful. The system they use is 98% dust-free, too, so you won’t be dealing with air quality issues after the fact.
Brian somehow manages to refinish floors while also being a one-man customer service team. If you call up their number, he’s the person you’re getting. He’s also the guy sticking it out until your floor looks perfect. “I really push for quality at the end of the day – and my crew does an amazing job!” he says. The results speak for themselves. ◆

Lasers, Lights, and Leading Edge Skincare
WITH THEIR NEW LUXURY LASER OPTIONS, DR. ANNE ABRAHAMSON AND NURSE PRACTITIONER ANNE ZAHN WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE 100% CUSTOMIZABLE TREATMENTS TO MEET EACH INDIVIDUAL CLIENT’S NEEDS
Cosmetics, dermatology and how we look play massive roles in our lives, but it can sometimes be challenging to find the right skincare treatment locally. Recognizing this, Anne Abrahamson, M.D., Diplomate, ABPMR of Great Lakes Health and Wellness made the decision to invest in the Sciton Medical and Aesthetic Laser Device. This innovative energy laser de-
vice is beloved by many celebrities including the Kardashians for its ability to repair and rejuvenate skin. Now, thanks to Dr. Abrahamson, it will be enjoyed Downriver.
After witnessing a demonstration of the Sciton Laser, Dr. Abrahamson became excited about the results, which may seem too good to be true. One week later, she and her team attended the Sciton Rock-
star Experience in Columbus, Ohio to network with other physicians and nurses who incorporate the energy laser device into their own practices. After learning more about all of the skin care treatments available, they knew they needed to bring it home.
“We were just astounded with the capabilities of the machine,” said Dr. Abrahamson. “There were hundreds of people
EDIT TREVOR NORKEY PHOTOS TRACIE SEELEY[at Sciton Rockstar], and they all had the same experience of just being able to make such significant changes for patients; especially in the realm of antiaging, rejuvenation, wrinkles, skin tightening and acne… It’s remarkable what you can do with this device.”
Hoping to provide as many options for the Downriver community as possible, Dr. Abrahamson invested in a Sciton Laser Machine which offers BBL, MOXI, and HALO.
• BroadBand Light (BBL) is the world’s most powerful intense pulsed light device. The light gently heats the skin’s upper layers to help regenerate cells, improve skin quality, treat sun damage, balance uneven skin tones, eliminate red spots, remove unwanted hair and take years off your skin
• The MOXI laser uses a non-ablative, fractionated laser to extract microscopic epidermal necrotic debris (MENDs) from your skin without breaking it. As a result, it gives you firmer, tighter skin, stimulates collagen production, improves fine lines, and improves texture resulting in a glow with significantly shorter downtime after treatment.
• The HALO hybrid fractional laser uses ablative and non-ablative laser wavelengths to reverse and prevent damage from sun exposure, aging, wrinkles, clogged pores, scars, and more. Known for giving “the Halo Glow,” this laser cosmetic therapy is ideal for rejuvenating and correcting the skin.
With these luxury laser options, Dr. Abrahamson and Nurse Practitioner, Anne Zahn will be able to provide 100% customizable treatments to meet each individual client’s desires and needs. They are offering the best treatments by licensed medical professionals who have trained to provide you with the best possible results.
“It’s a very comfortable procedure,” Dr. Abrahamson said after using the machine herself. “You can see the glow starting to come through, and I can feel the tightness occurring, but I’m in no discomfort… I looked completely normal, and now I just have this sandpapery tight feeling as the MENDs start to flake off.” ◆

Who makes real estate photos look so good?
“With real estate… it’s about showing the house in its best possible light” – Tracie Seeley, Metro Shores Media
BY TREVOR NORKEYPhotography plays a massive role in the real estate market. A wellframed, properly angled photo can give buyers and renters an alluring glimpse into what their life could be like in a new home. For properties in the downriver community, some of the best photos come from one camerawoman and her team.
“We’re looking to be the one place for all real-estate professional marketing media needs,” said Tracie Seeley, founder of Metro Shores Media LLC. “With real estate… it’s about showing the house in its best possible light.”
Metro Shore Media doesn’t just provide stellar listing photos for homes, but they also offer 3D tours, videos, floor plans,
headshots, and branding photos. This is all part of their package as a media company, which goes above and beyond what hiring a standard photographer would achieve. Many of their clients include real estate agents, property managers, commercial property owners, and Airbnb hosts.
Beyond Tracie, Metro Shore Media’s staff also includes Ron Seeley, Tracie’s husband of 27 years, and one other photographer. Ron has been helping Seeley with real-estate photography since retiring in 2020 and has played a massive role in Tracie’s growing business.
In addition to Metro Shores Media LLC, Seeley also runs Metro Detroit Headshots, which focuses on professional headshots and profile photos, along with Tracie Seeley Photography, where she has previously done high-school senior photos, maternity photos, and newborn photos. ◆

MOLNAR FUNERAL HOMES
The team at Molnar’s on-site Graphic Design Center is passionate about creating meaningful and lasting tributes for families
EDIT SUNDRA HILSINGEROrganizing the final arrangements for a loved one is difficult for a multitude of reasons. Understanding this, Molnar Funeral Homes has committed to minimizing the stress.
Celebrating 100 years in business, Molnar is proud to be the only funeral home in the community offering an on-site Graphic Design Center. “Instead of being limited to generic printing options, families are offered unique and creative options to remember their loved one,” says owner Angela Molnar-Ferguson. Families can either choose from a large selection of themes or opt for a custom theme. “Every aspect of our printed material may be personalized and having graphic designers on site means most requests can be accommodated with a quick turnaround time.”
Composed of a lead graphic designer and three graphic designers who are passionate about creating meaningful and lasting tributes for families, the Graphic Design Center team, like the rest of the Molnar organization, are compassionate professionals. “Our graphic designers always put the needs of the family first to come up with the best possible design,” says Angela, adding, “we feel that it helps the grieving
process of the family to tell the story of their loved one.”
Of Molnar’s many printing options, the most popular is likely the printing packages. These include the choice of prayer cards, memorial folders, or memorial programs. The packages also include acknowledgment cards, memorial candles, a canvas keepsake, laser-etched wooden photo ornaments, and personalized bookmarks. Families who choose to have a memorial video created also receive a custom laser-etched photobook. Molnar also assists families with personalizing their loved one’s visita-
tions and services, encouraging them to bring memorial boards and keepsakes from home to decorate the chapels. “We feel this is important to many families because it gives them the feel of home and highlights the memories shared.”
Taking personalization a step further, casket head panels are also offered, which are prominently displayed within the caskets. Explains Angela, “In the past, they have done a series of photographs to showcase the person’s life, simple verses, and have even hand-drawn pictures.” While Molnar Funeral Homes has always offered these services, they are constantly updating and innovating the technology to ensure the families' expectations are exceeded every time. ◆
Molnar Funeral Homes offer four different locations from which families can choose: Southgate Chapel, Brownstown Chapel, Nixon Chapel, and The Thon Center.

AVALON DAY SPA
Sarah Vail recently unveiled her new spa in a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. Offering skin care, brow, lash, wax, massage, and tanning services, Avalon Day Spa also provides advanced skincare services for chemotherapy treatment, radiation treatment, and much more.
In March 2023, Avalon Day Spa celebrated its grand opening in Riverview. Founded by Sarah Vail, the spa offers skin care, brow, lash, wax, massage, and tanning services. Additionally, Avalon provides advanced skincare services for chemotherapy treatment, radiation treatment, and more, thanks to the Dr. Lucas-Championnière Mist Sprayer & Pulvériser machine.
“I love working with that machine,” said Vail. “What separates this esthetics tool from the rest of traditional steamers is the ability to mix customized tonics. The spray is not evaporation; it is formed by atomization with a spray that is cooler than traditional steam and therefore useful in treating skin conditions where steam is not recommended… like Lupis.”
The Pulvériser is only manufactured in Paris, which doesn’t leave many options for patients in the Detroit area. With some of the closest similar oncology serv-
ices being as far as Novi, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids, Vail recognized that many people couldn’t get the treatment they desperately needed.
According to Vail, some patients with auto-immune conditions couldn’t safely drive to their appointments. Other appointments had to be cut short because of how fatigued patients were from traveling. This limited market for muchneeded health services was a major deciding factor for Vail opening her spa with the Pulvériser machine in Riverview.
“There are very few people in this world that cancer has not touched in one capacity or another,” Vail shared. “I learned very early on how to care for someone who was going through treatment and what they experience. Because of my experience with this, I can better
understand my clients’ feelings and anticipate their skincare needs… When they come in for services, I am able to give them compassion, love, empathy, and my fierce support.”
Avalon Day Spa is now the only oncology institution Downriver able to offer these high-level services, but that may not be for long. Vail’s son, John, is currently apprenticing under both her and Morag Currin, director and owner of Oncology Training International. John hopes to open another oncology spa Downriver after his training. On top of this, two more of Vail’s sons have helped Avalon Day Spa expand into a skincare and wellness blog and an online store with curbside pickup.
As a licensed aesthetician, Vail has five years of spa experience, two years of on-
cology experience, and ten certifications from Concepts Institute of Advanced Esthetics and other international training programs. When she’s not practicing her craft, Vail can be found drinking tea and reading one of the 300+ books in her personal library.
During appointments, Vail works with patients one-on-one to learn about their current health, concerns, preferred products, and goals to ensure the best skincare treatment possible with an emphasis on wellness education. ◆
Avalon Day Spa is located at 18104 Fort St., Riverview. Please visit theavalondayspa.com or call 248-686-1259 for more information.
