Ro’s Note elcome to the new iteration of Channels magazine developed in partnership with the Grosse Ile Recreation Department. The new glossy magazine format allows for a fresh presentation of Rec. The response we’ve received for our premier issue was beyond our expectations. We had overwhelming demand for ‘extra’ copies so that Islanders could share the issue with friends and family throughout Southeast Michigan, other regions of Michigan, and even out of state (Arizona, Florida, and Hawaii!). FOAM & GLOW New to the Islandfest this year was a Foam Party and Glow Paint Party with the music turned up!
CARNIVAL TECHNO POWER Carnival rides are the centerpiece of Islandfest both day and night. And Saturday is full of fun, with a fireworks show, live bands, and a VIP tent with food and beverages.
The music and entertainment was top notch... ,, what a great time WELL WELL, look who’s back, it’s me, Miss Gigi. After my inaugural column, which was such a hit, I’m back with my newest journal entry. Well sheesh, whomever said dog days of summer was right! It’s been a long, hot summer and keeping one’s dance card and social calendar filled is a full time job. Don’t get me wrong, it has its rewards, like getting a special treat from my friend Marie’s place, the Grosse Ile Pet and Garden Center. It’s right next door to one of dad’s favorite places, Lloyd’s. Sure wish their outdoor patio was
pooch friendly. But, we know firsthand, because the new owners told us personally, that the new Tasty Freeze on the island will be four-legged welcoming. We always love the pup cups at Custard Corner just across the bridge. Hey Nicole, we also love enjoying your yummy custard and ice cream on a warm summer Sunday evenings at the Concert at the Commons. and entertainment was top notch. The screaming kids at the carnival sounded like they were having a ball. I sampled some amazing cuisine and did a little shopping. I even picked up some catnip for my sister, Stinky Cat (Menka the Sphynx). She’s got no hair and has a lot of wrinkles. But more about her later, this column is called Gigi’s Journal, NOT THE CAT. After Islandfest shopping and the parade on Saturday morning, I retired back to my home for some much needed rest. We closed the windows and doors, and turned on the AC and TV, so as to not to disturb me as the bigbang firework show commenced. By far my most exciting adventure happened in my own front yard. The dad’s hosted their annual summer soiree with over 400 attendees meandering throughout my property. As I minged in and out of the ankles and knees of our company, I was treated to many delicious and succulent delicacies. There were fire performers, belly dancers, disk jockeys and entertainment of all sorts. Even the fireworks were spectacular. As always, being the fashionista that I am, I wore my finest, new diamond yellow collar. Even Stinky Cat got more attention than usual. I must admit that 4 a.m. is way past my bedtime, but the festivities were endless. I have attended many, many more summer events than I can even mention, but I am really looking forward to Paint the Town Red, the weekend of September 2830. Running in conjunction with the homecoming celebration, there is plenty to do for the pups, people, and kids with this fun filled event. Well, off I go to get my monthly pet-icure and shop for a new fall outfit. I’ll talk to you later when the leaves begin to change, the temperature is more to my liking and visions of sugar plums start dancing in my head. As always, big wet kisses!

FOLKS ARE BUZZING about the all-natural, locally made products from Island Girls Honey Co. What started as a hobby for Grosse Ile resident Stephanie Kearney, blossomed into a business which earned her first place in Monroe County Fair’s honey tasting contest last year. “I have been a beekeeper for about six years; actually, this is my seventh summer,” says Stephanie, who takes the time to harvest from her hives every two weeks during the summer, in addition to being a Certified Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurse at Karmanos. Stephanie says she had always been interested in beekeeping and was finally able to
pursue it when she moved to Grosse Ile in 2005. “I just started it as a hobby to be an apiarist. To learn how to keep bees and it kind of grew from there.” Of course, award-winning honey didn’t come overnight. “I started out with one hive, and that year they died. And the next year I had two hives, and those hives died,” says Stephanie, who’s still remorseful at the loss of those initial bees. “And then the next year I joined the Monroe Beekeepers Club and I just started reading everything I could about [beekeeping].” Although Stephanie did initial research before getting her first hive, it wasn’t until she learned new methods to keep her bees healthy, such July/Aug 2018 G R O S S E I L E |

as winterizing them properly, and most importantly, protecting them from a prevalent mite problem, that she had success. Now with 13 thriving hives, Stephanie can share her amazing honey. Island Girls Honey is sold at Westcroft Gardens and the Grosse Ile Gardens of Hope. “I have a Facebook page and [customers] can send me a message on Facebook, but I usually sell out and I’ve actually sold honey that I don’t even have yet,” says Stephanie. “I have friends and family that used to buy pints, and now they buy gallons.” Beekeeping is also a lot of work. “It will probably take me about four hours to inspect the hives and take the honey out of them. [I] go frame by frame and make sure that the bees have capped the honey… and we just take those out one by one and take them back to my house. And then it takes about another four hours to get the honey off the frame.” Stephanie doesn’t work completely alone though. “I have one man who helps me… he just started learning about bees,” she says. “I kind of recruited him, he retired a few years ago from [General Motors] and he’s a family friend. He built a lot of my equipment and helps like a set of extra hands.”

Island BIZ
Island Girls Honey’s label was designed by Stephanie’s son, who was inspired by Calvin and Hobbes comics. She chose the name Island Girls “‘Cause all the worker bees are girls and we live on an island.” Stephanie’s love of the Caribbean also influenced the name choice. She even painted her hives to mimic those bright tropical colors. Stephanie makes it clear that selling honey was just an outcome of beekeeping. As a nurse for over 20 years, she’s passionate about health and living green. Beekeeping is just a natural extension of those interests because it’s good for the environment and has a positive effect on the declining bee population. Stephanie gives all the credit for tasty honey to her Island Girls. “Nothing that I do [is the secret to award-winning honey], it’s the
pollen and nectar in the plants that grow [in the area].” She will defend her title this year at the Monroe County Fair. For anyone considering acquiring an apiary of their own, Stephanie says “Read everything you can before you start, join a Facebook group, get a mentor, join a bee club! That’s your best bet. And shadow somebody for an entire weekend before you actually get a beehive.” There are also opportunities to attend conferences throughout the year, which are sponsored by the Michigan Beekeepers Association and the Southeast Michigan Beekeepers Association. Plans for the future of Island Girls Honey Co. may include teaching beekeeping classes, a “be a beekeeper for the day” experience, and observation areas for students to see the hives without getting stung. •

GIYC Great people. Great lakes. Greattimes.
GROSSE ILE YACHT CLUB (GIYC) has been in existence since 1935, and have been been stepping up their game to attract new members as well as to show appreciation for their current members. The Club has been spending a lot of time making sure its outside is as beautiful as its inside, adding a patio area that features a fire pit, and a second-floor deck, that is partially covered so that it is perfect for rain or shine. Both areas enjoy perfect views of the Detroit River and Lake Erie. General Manager Sandy Cullen cannot rave enough about the improvements to club’s exterior and notes new additions to the dining room staff. “We wanted to step up our game at the club and emphasize food preparation,” Cullen said. “Our whole food presentation is beautiful.”

To attract new members, the club holds an Open House each spring. Membership chairman Roger Pollack said some people might’ve wanted to call the open house a membership drive, but the event was as much for the members as it was for prospective ones. Something new GIYC added this season was the ability for members to make use of the club’s facilities after closing time. “The GIYC ‘After Hours’ is our big focus right now,” Cullen said. “We feel that people want more available hours at their club, and by opening it up, we’re making it convenient for the members to enjoy their club whenever they want to.” At present the club has around 230 members, but with all the improvements that have been made, Cullen and Pollack believe that number will rapidly increase. “We’re hoping to see growth. That’s why we’re putting all of this effort into enhancing the club experience and making all the improvements,” Cullen said. The club is already planning to do more not just for its members but for the community as a whole. • giyc.com

Our Island
The Grosse Ile Historical Society strives to enhance , the understanding of our Island s past and its connection to the present BY RICHARD SNYDER
PHOTOS TYLER HOLLOWAY
A HISTORIC HOUSE built in 1870 currently sits along Grosse Ile Parkway. Although Parkway was its original location, It hasn’t always been there. At one point, the house was moved to Macomb Street, before being brought back to Parkway. Years back, Grosse Ile was an official port of entry to Canada. Back then, rail tracks connected Trenton to Grosse Ile and went across a trestle to Stony Island, where passengers could then complete their trip to Canada by ferry boat. Once the trains were rolling, the government needed a customs house, so one was built next to Parkway, where the tracks were established. Trains carried passengers, as well as all types of freight, including cattle. The train would pull up to the Customs House and the customs officer would yell out something like… “show me your papers,” or “where’s the beef ?”
24
| G R O S S E I L E July/Aug 2018
After operating for a few years, the port of entry was closed, and the house was no longer needed. The government sold it to a local islander, who had it moved to Macomb Street. While on Macomb, the house was used as a pool hall, a barbershop, an ice cream shop and living quarters. When People’s Bank became the owner of the house, they donated it to the Grosse Ile Historical Society. In 1979, the house was moved back to the area on Parkway, where it sits today. The Historical Society currently uses the building to hold meetings, store documents and artifacts, and maintain a collection of Grosse Ile history for visitors to observe. GOOD Works
Parishioners Give Back BY BETHANY NEWTON PHOTOS JANE FIJAL
SACRED HEART Catholic Church is a community of faith-driven Grosse Ile residents dedicated to giving back to those around them whether that’s through their food pantry or an outreach sewing program. One thing they’re doing to help the homeless though is pretty unique. Back in 2011, Reverend Michael Molnar went down to visit his sister in Florida when he found out that her church was making mats for homeless people to sleep on. The mats were made from grocery bags and old tablecloths, and Reverend Molnar liked the idea so much that he suggested it to his own church, and after learning quickly on YouTube, some ladies in the Parish began to make mats of their own.
GOOD Works
Now, about 20 ladies from the church meet every Monday in order to make the mats and socialize. One of these women, Marsha Pizzo, has been making mats since the beginning. “The ladies that we meet with are just the nicest people in the world,” Pizzo said. “Besides knowing you’re helping the homeless, it’s a real good feeling inside.”
Pizzo lived in the community for 25 years but didn’t know anyone from the Parish before she started helping with the mats. Now she said she has friends for life. Another woman who helps distribute the mats to the various places in the community is the Director of Christian Service Terry Morreau. Morreau takes the mats to places like homeless shelters, train stations and Spirit of Hope, a community center in Detroit. “They’re always so grateful. We always get a thank you,” Morreau said. “We don’t want it. We don’t need it, but they always feel like they have to say thank you.” One church, St. Aloysius in Detroit, actually sent the mat makers a letter thanking them for their donation of mats for their neighborhood services. In the letter, they mention that the homeless people that come to the ministry love “these useful and comfortable mats.” All together, the ladies have made around 400 mats over the span of seven years, and they don’t look like they’re slowing down at all. • sacredheartgi.org

DULL KNIVES? Scissors that won’t cut? Bring them to Master Sharpener Fred Wheeler at the Grosse Ile Gardens of Hope. Fred learned the art of sharpening from his father who worked at a men’s shirt factory for 45 years. “I kicked it up a notch because I became a toolmaker,” says Fred. Besides sharpening a variety of dull edges for over 60 years, Fred has also become adept at restoring tools and furniture. “I don’t sharpen like other people. Whatever I sharpen is a high-quality edge. Another thing I do is restoration on the product. Nobody does that!” Fred is the real deal when it comes to his craft and has the stories to prove it. “I’ve traveled all over the world,” he says, utilizing his expertise at companies that made products like computer memory cores and spark plugs. “Every single spark plug made in the United States is made with [my company’s] equipment.” And although Fred re-

Providing this service to people makes Fred happy he says. “I like to do this because I like to talk to people.” As a proud resident of Grosse Ile since 1968, Fred provides another service to his neighbors. Island Home Watch LLC is Fred’s house sitting service that offers folks peace of mind while they are away. Fred says these services keep him busy and allow him to meet new people. • For information regarding Fred’s services and prices, email miekawheeler@yahoo.com or call 313-715-8577.
ONCE A DISABLED ADULT reaches the age of 26, they are no longer able to receive education through the State of Michigan, leaving many with no place to go. The Mi Cookie Project, founded in 2016 by Maggie Gibson, was established to give these “aged out” adults a space to develop meaningful skills, while building friendships and a sense of community. Mi Cookie Project provides adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to engage in hands on training in a commercial bakery, affording bakers a sense of responsibility and pride, as well as a community of friends. The bakery currently operates out of 19621 Wood Street, located directly behind St. Mary Magdalen Church in Melvindale. Baked goods can be found on sale at the Taylor Farmers Market, as well as through direct orders by the dozen (starting at $6.00). The project welcomes volunteers with and without disabilities to help in the bakery and emphasizes that “people of all abilities can work and play together.” • If you would like additional information on ordering baked goods or how to volunteer, please contact micookieproject@gmail.com or call 734-770-2223.
