RE: UNC Charlotte E-Sports Game and Lounge Space Renovation
DearJeanine and Colleagues:
I am writing on behalf of Progressive AE to convey our enthusiastic interest in providing architectural and engineering services for the development of the University of North Carolina Charlotte E-Sports Game and Lounge Space. Recognizing the importance of close collaboration with the University’s facilities management, student organizations, and leadership, we are dedicated to understanding the project’s programmatic needs thoroughly.
Progressive AE boasts a team of seasoned professionals with a track record of successfully delivering similar campus lifestyle projects, such as Eastern Michigan University’s Virtual Golf Training Center and Central Michigan University’s E-Sports Facility.
Our comprehensive understanding of the University’s campus life, coupled with insights into the local context, uniquely positions us to meet your project’s specific requirements. In our commitment to excellence, we have partnered with NV5 Global Inc. as our gaming consultants, enhancing our capabilities for this undertaking. Together, our integrated team is well prepared to address the challenges presented by this project, leveraging over 60 years of combined experience in architectural and engineering design, complemented by NV5’s 77 years as a leading provider of professional technical engineering and consulting solutions.
The proposed upgrades to Room M101 encompass a reception desk, multiple gaming stations, and a dedicated tournament area, reflecting our all-encompassing approach to design. We have envisioned a seamless and coherent transition between the lower gaming area and this upgraded space, resulting in a desirable atmosphere and ambiance. Our team of construction administrative professionals is well-equipped to manage every aspect of the project’s life cycle, ensuring the delivery of top-notch, cost-effective design services throughout the renovation process.
We would like to express our appreciation for considering our proposal. We are genuinely excited about the positive impact this project could have on the University and are eager to contribute our extensive knowledge and skills to bring your vision to life.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (704) 731-0856 or via email at marksk@ progressiveae.com. We look forward to collaborating with you on this project.

The E-Sports community at Central Michigan University (CMU) is growing. They currently meets in multiple locations across campus and they are in need of a space to congregate together to socialize, learn, and grow. An existing space was created off Main Street at the Student Activity Center (SAC) for E-Sports, but due to Covid-19, this space has not been open to students. An expanded space is needed to continue to grow the community, provide training, and include people from all walks of life and experiences to help them better engage in campus life.
The existing bowling center at the SAC was selected for advancing the E-Sports community. The space was offered to the design team as a place that could be converted for new use, because bowling has grown out of style in recent years. The bowling alley is approximately 9,000 square feet. The location of the existing bowling center is at the southeast corner of the SAC with access from parking to the east. It is situated right at the front entrance to the building; and can be accessed without going through the secured check point. That precious real estate needs to be converted into a space that today’s students want to take part in. The flagship of the facility will be E-Sports space to support competition at the varsity, intramural, club and informal recreation levels. The facility will also include space for tabletop and console gaming.

The Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Golf Training Facility project is about translating the game’s ethos: moral character, strategy, teamwork, etiquette, decision making, mindfulness and perseverance into the built environment. The facility designed to integrate with the existing Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti, Michigan, provides training and support for the men’s and women’s varsity golf teams, and the necessary related site improvements for the beautiful course. Preparing for this future team was an important consideration for EMU.
Funded by a donation from GameAbove, a group of Eastern Michigan University graduates and many former athletes themselves, the project understood the delicate balance necessary between the classroom and commitment to the sport itself.
The design team focused on the whole person, the athlete and the student to provide both the necessary tools to hone their golf technique and skills, but also provide a home away from home to build friendships and a deep sense of team.

Michigan University
Eastern Michigan University’s (EMU) 3D arts programs – ceramics, metals, furniture design, jewelry, etc. – are currently located in different buildings throughout the university’s campus. This is causing several redundancies and inefficiencies when it comes to classroom and conference room space. This study seeks to understand the feasibility of collocating the various arts programs into a single, existing building.
Not only will it alleviate the redundancies of space, it will also allow the university to take older, high-cost buildings offline. Progressive AE’s design team is providing EMU an estimated scope and cost for the project, as well as capital campaign materials for fundraising.

Esports & Competitive Gaming
Central Michigan University
Mount Pleasant,
As eSports grow in popularity around the globe, Central Michigan University prepares to expand and upgrade its competitive eSports program with the 9,000 SF renovated state-of-the-art facility. Using this high-tech arena and amenities, CMU aims to expand their varsity eSports program and increase engagement with casual gamers and fans.
Highlighting the renovation is the flexible PC Competition Arena which can be used for 1v1 competitions all the way up to 6v6. This venue can be opened to an audience for competitive events or closed using a retractable privacy wall. Audience members can follow action via multiple large video screens located behind the competitors. The flexible nature of the casual gaming area outside the main audience area allows larger events to take place.
The video production studio can be used for broadcasting live matches to streaming platforms and creating content for the gaming arena video screens. Live productions are enabled via a production control room with access to cameras and microphones for on-air talent, shoutcaster, and a green-screen area. Space is also available for podcasting interviews with players and coaches. The arena features infrastructure for multi-camera set ups including several remote cameras and individual POV cameras at the player positions.
The facility supports many different gaming platforms, including PCs and consoles, and features a reconfigurable area that can be used for tabletop gaming. While the facility will primarily be used for competitive gaming, public visitation is encouraged as casual gamers can drop in to play on public gaming devices.
Between matches, gaming teams, students and instructors have access to reservable meeting rooms, team rooms, and flexible conference rooms. All of which are equipped with gaming computers, high-definition displays, and white board areas.

Designed not built

Designed to host every form of gaming, the first permanent esports venue on the Las Vegas Strip recently opened to rave reviews.
The facility features a competition stage, broadcast-quality TV studio, interactive displays, 360-degree videoboard, streaming booth and a virtual reality experience. The facility uses 24 cameras to deliver network broadcast-quality content to the arena’s 50-foot-long, two-storyLED video wall and live streaming across the world. The arena seats 250 people, but the largest audience is the millions watching the competition online. The project team developed a specialized approach to lighting, avoiding glare and contrast issues while achieving illumination on faces by experimenting with source angles.
The LED video wall so close to players posed several unique challenges. For example, all stage lighting had to be carefully aimed to avoid throwing light onto the screen, which could deteriorate the contrast ratio and distort the color of the displayed image. Despite conflicting needs for each of these modes, the venue had to simultaneously support both a good image and experience for the live audience, as well as the online viewers. Every aspect of the lighting system was controllable, so adjustments could be further fine-tuned as needed.
The largest challenge came in interconnecting the architectural lighting and controls system. The production lighting needed to be able to control the architectural lighting during broadcasts. With a combination of careful planning, finding that perfect interface device, and working closely with the entire design and integration/construction team, the team successfully tied the two systems together in a way that truly enhanced the overall functionality of the entire system.
