Welcome to Dublin!

We are thrilled to welcome you to the first IETM Plenary Meeting in Dublin – our first major meeting in Ireland since Galway 2001. We have worked together to develop an enjoyable, incisive and debate-provoking programme for you, and we hope that over the weekend you have fun, meet new and old friends, get your teeth into some discussions, and get an insight into the local performing arts scene.

Over the past three years, IETM has been exploring major themes linking the arts with contemporary society; ownership, collaboration, participation in political life, rights, ideas and ideals. Now comes the big one: Trust. We ask that you keep this theme in your thoughts and discussions throughout the weekend.

Welcome

A lot has changed for Ireland – and for all of us – since the Galway meeting in 2001, both for better and for worse. During your time in Dublin you’ll no doubt spot evidence of the meteoric economic rise, most obvious in the shiny new buildings and bridges around the city centre.

Less obvious is the evidence of the economic crisis. In some ways, the biggest impact is felt most keenly outside of the capital. Empty houses across the country constructed during the boom years and never occupied. A return to high levels of emigration, with over 80,000 people leaving each year. Most critically (and less visibly) there is now a significant lack of trust in the institutions that were meant to be looking out for us. A crisis of trust is happening, not just in Ireland, but across the world.

Trust is the glue in all positive relationships. It is impossible to be democratic without it, to be good citizens without it, to create performance without it. Our trust continues to be betrayed on a massive, international scale, and this betrayal has touched the foundations of so many of our societies. What are we doing about it? How are we reacting? How has it impacted on our work practices, and has it changed our thinking about what art itself is for?

Where better to hold this discussion than a country recovering from crisis, undergoing massive social change and where trust is the key to a bright future? As part of IETM Dublin, we have specifically developed a discussion session called The Big Debate: how to trust and be trusted (p.6), which will take place over the three days and where we invite you and your fellow delegates to interrogate these issues and more.

We trust that you will take the weekend to explore this theme in depth with our provoking discussions and meetings, enjoy the work of Irish artists and soak up the atmosphere of the wonderful city of Dublin.

As professionals in the arts sector, we want our audiences to trust us. Our artists want us to be trustworthy and at the same time we need to trust them. Boards, managers and staff all need to trust each other. You as a group have all created this network, IETM, as an act of trust, too. We all see that it's a fragile and vulnerable balance.

Dublin Dublin is best seen from a distance. James Joyce’s Ulysses may have immortalised the capital, but it was a picture drawn from his memory in Zurich, Trieste and Paris. In theatre, you come closer, and it reveals more. It is a city of stories, sound and motion, a city in ux; friendly, welcoming, bruised and guarded.

Much of this character is in our performance, out on the streets or on the stage. It is smart and playful, uneasy and indirect.

This is a town with many questions and very few straight answers.

Ideas move quickly through a small, supportive community with a deep distrust of authority. On the edge of Europe we make connections to avoid isolation. There are no full-time ensembles.

State funding is small and precarious. Many people work without a safety net. But performance has always brought us together to make sense of ourselves in our best traditions and boldest experiments. The work gets made by any means necessary. This has brought us to theatres, studios and empty spaces, into once notorious institutions and out into city streets. It has brought Ireland around the world. Now it has brought you to Dublin.

General Assembly The General Assembly is an opportunity to learn about and discuss IETM's achievements, challenges, strategies and projects and influence its future developments. Besides discussing last year's reports and plans for 2013, the members will also decide on the new Board. Come and take an active part in the life of your network!

This time, there is a change to the usual running order: in Dublin we will hold the General Assembly on Friday morning before the Plenary Session.

There will be tea and coffee available to buy from 09:00, with pastries kindly provided by Dublin City Council and registration will be moved to this venue for the morning.

Meeting Programme

Plenary Session We have asked one of Ireland’s foremost living poets and writers, Theo Dorgan, to talk to you about trust and to propose a tone, a challenge, a talking point for you to take with you throughout the weekend.

Cian O’Brien, Artistic Director of Project Arts Centre (IETM Dublin’s local host), will also give a brief introduction and context to the artistic programme of IETM Dublin.

This session will take place on the main stage of the Abbey Theatre, Ireland’s national theatre whose roots are inextricably bound up with the founding of the Republic of Ireland. Where better to start the conversation about trust, culture and politics that will be explored over the weekend?

The Big Debate: how to trust and be trusted One thing we can all agree on: we’ve been betrayed.

Who can we trust anymore? Internationally, economically, socially, politically – are we experiencing a trust crisis?

What place is there for culture when our societies are under strain? Do the ambitions of the network that is Europe still hold true? What are our responsibilities as cultural workers towards politics and politicians? What are our political responsibilities to our audiences? When trust has been broken between societies, between countries, what can we do to rebuild it?

Questions, questions, questions. These are some of ours – we’re sure you have many of your own.

We invite you and challenge you to take part in The Big Debate, which will take place over three sessions and is designed to be a stimulating conversation that will last the whole weekend. Dip in and out, or be involved from start to finish – it’s up to you. Each day will bring up new questions and topics, and will grow and develop from the day before. Two moderators will be on hand at all times to listen, contextualise, provoke and direct the proceedings.

But the real meat of the discussion is what you bring to it.

Meeting Programme Delegate Introduction and Speed Dating Whether this is your first or fourteenth IETM meeting, come to this informal session to meet other IETM members, new and old. IETM Board and long-time IETM members will give a short introduction to how the weekend will work, and you’ll be able to take part in the traditional speed dating. Creative Europe and Audiences No doubt many of you have been following developments around Creative Europe, the new EU programme for 2014-2020. What will the changes mean for you? And how will the proposed programme be interpreted when it comes to applications? Ann Branch has been instrumental in the programme’s development and at this session she will discuss some of the plans and answer delegates’ questions. At the core of this conversation will be the new focus on audience development, and we invite IETM members to share their examples of existing and potential practices in this area, in relation to Creative Europe's plans.

Music Theatre Network This working group gives delegates a practical look at what’s happening in the world of music theatre and has become a regular event at IETM. The session is aimed at producers and artists who are interested in sharing practical information and introducing their past and future projects. It will be of interest to all delegates who want to be kept up to date with developments in music theatre and sonic arts.

Trust Us, We’re Freelance Too Being freelance is a sustainable way of working, but it can be lonely. How can we build the trust needed to share our most important resources – practical knowledge and moral support?

In this participatory session we will provide a model for accelerating discussion, sowing the seeds of artistic collaboration and sharing knowledge – a model that you can take away with you and use to establish a freelance meet-up in your own area.

Topics we might touch on include: peer to peer mentorship, residencies, self-producing, and work-life balance when your office is in your kitchen.

Do We Trust Showcases?

So many of us love to complain about showcases – and yet they still have a key role in the buying and selling of productions internationally. Taking in three points of view – the artist, the programmer and the showcase organiser – the panel will introduce their experiences.

When performance makers choose to take inspiration from specific communities or what might be dubbed ‘marginalised discourses’, does this represent cultural appropriation or a daring collaboration? At best this type of work can open discussion, encourage cultural exchange and democratise artforms, and in the process shift the status quo or present a challenge to the complacent. At worse it can perpetuate tokenism and create another contemporary form of cultural imperialism.

This session will introduce the work of artists collaborating with marginalised communities, showcase their working methods and examine questions around ethics, identity, audience and responsibility in order to open up discussion and interrogate how best to represent the complex realities of today’s world.

Meeting Programme DanceHouse Dance Ireland is the representative body for professional dance in Ireland, celebrating, developing and promoting the diversity of dance practices in Ireland today. DanceHouse is the home of Dance Ireland and features six purpose-built rehearsal studios, a resource room and exhibition spaces.

After the Plenary Session on Friday 12 April, a small number of packed lunches will be available for purchase at DanceHouse for those attending the afternoon sessions there.

Guided Tours of DanceHouse Come by for short tours of this building which is the working base for professional dance practice and a hub for the wider dance community.

Trust Circus To Take You Into The Unknown Led by artists from the Irish Street Arts, Circus and Spectacle Network (ISACS), this session will have you up on your feet. Making Things Happen: art under the economy Artists point at what they believe to be valuable, sometimes challenging, and sometimes reinforcing prevailing ways of thinking. That’s why they’re important to economic growth, but also why they can challenge the assumptions on which the economy is based. Join Shelagh Wright, Charlie Tims and other speakers for a workshop exploring their IETM-commissioned paper which looks at how artists are responding to the vice-like grip economics holds on politics, culture and our day-to-day life - and at how we might help build an economy which we can trust to value what matters.

Are The Performing Arts Driving Us Mad? Are our working practices endangering our mental health? In what way do they reflect unhealthy power relations and structural problems in society at large? How can we make our work practices safe for artists and arts workers with mental health issues? Can the performing arts be a leading force in re-shaping how society conceives of mental health? These are just some of the questions we will be exploring in this discussion about the relationship between our work, our art and our minds.

From Beirut with Love IETM’s Caravan meeting in Beirut in November 2012 was truly fantastic, and we want to share this experience with you.

We had the privilege to meet and talk with a lot of artists and cultural operators and to learn more about the local cultural scene. At this session we will show images, talk about the local context and invite members to connect more with artists and cultural operators from Lebanon and the Middle East.

There will also be a screening of a documentary Twelve Angry Lebanese (2009) by Zeina Daccache, who was one of the artists IETM members met at the Caravan. Presented with our hosts in Lebanon - Zicohouse and Rola Kobeissi - together with Caravan participants.

Meeting Programme Mentor Room The Mentor Room gives real insight into individual working practices and challenges of IETM members in an intimate and supportive environment. Delegates are invited in advance of the meeting to submit topics and questions that they need mentored and a small number will be selected as mentees. Two mentors are then allocated per mentee, according to the questions asked, and these three will spend the full session in discussion together.

Silent observers are invited to listen to one of these in-depth conversations, and there will be an opportunity for general discussion and feedback at the end of the session. In contrast to all other IETM sessions, the doors of the Mentor Room close when we start and all participants, including silent observers, are encouraged to stay for the full two hours in order to enhance the supportive atmosphere.

All That Fall

Description: A life of unending misery in a world devoid of God, now that’s funny. All That Fall is an atmospheric, intimate and multi-layered installation performance of Samuel Beckett’s 1956 radio play. This theatrically tuned listening chamber was created by Pan Pan, one of Ireland’s most influential contemporary theatre companies. Pan Pan have been making and touring work since 1991. Recent work that has toured internationally includes: A Doll House, Oedipus Loves You, The Crumb Trail and The Rehearsal, Playing The Dane.

This performance will be prefaced by a short introduction by Artistic Director, Gavin Quinn.

Dublin Fringe Festival Curates Description: Dublin Fringe Festival (DFF) has teamed up with the IETM Dublin organisers to create three unique events for meeting delegates. As well as an annual curated multi-disciplinary festival each September with up to 100 events, DFF runs the year-round FRINGE LAB which exists to support independent artists working at the experimental end of the performing arts. Many Irish artists working in performance who are now starting to create a name for themselves abroad had their first steps supported by the DFF team and continue to present work at the festival each September. May I draw your eyes? is a one-on-one performance and a meditation on looking and drawing. Tickets can be bought at Project Arts Centre until 2 hours before each performance. After this, and where available, tickets can be bought at the individual performance venues. The venues are small, and the shows will be popular so get in to Project Arts Centre and book your tickets for the weekend as soon as you can!

Gallery The Gallery at Project Arts Centre usually presents curated exhibitions of Irish and international contemporary visual art together with new commissions. Installed for IETM Dublin is Hurry on Sundown by Angela Fulcher (Ireland) which recalls 2012 exhibition, Conjuring for Beginners. It is joined by Fieldwork Seating Solution, a simple modular construction designed by Seoidín O’Sullivan (Ireland) which shifts into formations suitable for intimate conversation or public discussion - creating a space for you to relax and mingle.

Dublin – Practical Info The average temperature in Dublin in April is 6-12°C/43-54°F and the weather is VERY changeable - having the four seasons in one day is common!

Ireland’s timezone is GMT +0. The international calling code for Ireland is +353 Standard voltage is 230volt AC (50hz). We use 13 amp plugs with three square pins (the same as the UK).

Ireland’s currency is the euro. Visa and MasterCard are more widely accepted in Dublin than Amex or Diners Club, which are often not accepted in smaller establishments. You can also use credit cards to withdraw cash at ATMs. Price Index: Coffee: €2 - €4 Pint of beer: €4.50 - €5.50 Sandwich: €2.50 - €7 (depending on your taste) Cigarettes (pack of 20): €8.50 - €10 A normal tip for good service in Dublin restaurants and is between 10%-15%. Service charge is sometimes automatically included for groups of six or more. Rounding up to the nearest denomination for taxi fares is common.

Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public spaces and on public transport throughout the country.

Other Practical Things Forty Shades of Green Before fifty shades of grey, there were Forty Shades of Green, which Johnny Cash claimed to count in the Irish landscape on a trip to the Emerald Isle in 1961. IETM Dublin aims to be a green meeting. Please separate your rubbish, recycling what you can in the bins provided. Tap water is free and drinkable in Ireland, so keep your bottle and refill!

WiFi There is free WiFi at Project Arts Centre and other venues – but, as we all know, high demand can mean slow service. We recommend you leave your work at home and enjoy the meeting!
