ANNUAL REPORT 2022 PADI AWARE ANNUAL REPORT 2022
1
LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR This year, PADI AWARE Foundation celebrated thirty years as an environmental non-profit and continued to demonstrate the strength of our new mission. We built upon decades of conservation work, provided funding to local communities and helped secure trade policies that protected the most vulnerable marine species. All in all, it was a time of celebration and growth alongside our community, partners and donors. The PADI AWARE Community Grant Program had its first full year with a set of three grant cycles. At the launch of the program, the Foundation committed 24% of its public funds year over year. We made good on that promise with over 51 grantees receiving direct financial resources in just one year since its inception. These grants went to community-led efforts that addressed climate change, marine debris, marine habitat loss and vulnerable species protection. A truly global program, grantees spanned across geographies with sixteen in Asia Pacific, twenty-two in Americas and thirteen in Europe, Middle East and Asia. In June, we evolved our former Adopt a Dive Site initiative into an evergreen program, Adopt the Blue. With a goal of 5,000 adopted sites, this vital network will not only provide the underwater eyes for tracking human impact on the marine world but will create an economic case for ocean protection. In just under a year, PADI AWARE ANNUAL REPORT 2022
Adopt the Blue has already established the largest network of underwater sites for conservation action thanks to PADI’s global network of 6,600 dive centers and more than 128,000 professional members worldwide bringing both scale and passion. Over our thirty-year history, PADI AWARE Foundation has an established and credible influence on shark conservation efforts at the policy level. This year was truly groundbreaking as we helped to secure protections for over 50 vulnerable shark species at the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) in Panama. In addition to attending the meeting personally, we mobilized supporters in over 107 countries to urge their governments to accept the historic proposal. Thanks to the help of supporters like you, vulnerable shark species like the black tip reef shark, hammerhead and bull shark are now protected. With 2022 behind us, we have added another successful year to our rich history in ocean conservation. We look forward to another three decades of advocacy, conservation action and ocean education together. We know that none of this is possible without our donors, supporters, PADI Dive centers, PADI partners and sponsors. There is still critical work ahead and we are grateful to represent and work alongside all of you fighting to protect our blue planet. 2

DIVE AGAINST DEBRIS We kicked-off the year with the Dive Against Debris course, the heart of the PADI AWARE marine debris program since 2011. PADI Dive Centers have been instrumental in making Dive Against Debris a success – removing more than 2 million pieces of debris and aiding over 10,000 entangled marine animals. Dive Against Debris has also advanced groundbreaking marine research, producing two scientific publications mapping the global state of marine debris. In 2022 and beyond, the program provides country specific data to inform the advancement of local waste management policies, stopping marine debris at its source.
8
To enable more engagement in this course, Dive Against Debris was refreshed with a completely new and improved training component, support materials for PADI Professionals and availability on the PADI eLearning platform. The citizen science component rolled-out new app upgrades to make submissions more user friendly. The revamped Dive Against Debris course remained a one dive, standardized Adventure Specialty and instructors were able to immediately teach the course following the launch in April 2022.
The PADI AWARE Dive Against Debris® eLearning provides the most accessible way for Torchbearers to participate in marine debris actions at Dive Centers around the world – an instrumental piece to reaching the PADI Blueprint goal of reducing marine debris by 50% in target countries.
ADOPT THE BLUE PROGRAM Marking World Ocean’s Day 2022, PADI and PADI AWARE launched the Adopt the Blue Program, expanding on the former Adopt a Dive Site program, originally tailored for just marine debris conservation action. Over the next decade, the Adopt The Blue program will serve as the connective tissue to drive forward PADI’s Blueprint For Ocean Action, the organization’s roadmap that underpins all local conservation efforts on marine debris, and protection of vulnerable species, restoration of coral reef systems and tackling climate change. These local actions, when replicated and scaled up, will truly help drive global impact.
“Our goal is to create 10,000 Adopt The Blue sites by 2025, working with local communities and PADI operators to accelerate local conservation efforts where they are most needed, and to actively contribute towards protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030.” Danna Moore, Director of PADI AWARE Foundation.
Adopt The Blue is supported by PADI MPA Program founding partner Blancpain, who shares a rich history rooted in the exploration and preservation of the world’s oceans. Together, PADI and Blancpain are committed to establishing the largest inventory of Marine Protected Areas in the world. PADI’s Mission Hubs are at the heart of Adopt The Blue – the 6,600 dive centers and resorts and more than 128,000 professional members worldwide who will serve as the backbone for the program’s global footprint, providing unprecedented scale and unmatched potential for participants to take direct action that will drive measurable conservation impact at the local level – all tied to the global commitment to protect 30% of the ocean by 2023. “Over the years we have been consistently amazed by the passion and readiness of the diving community to take action where and when it’s needed. With the scale and support of our mission hubs, divers and ocean torchbearers will be able to help countries meet their ocean conservation commitments as well as driving forward the creation of coastal MPAs,” continues Moore. “This global collective effort of meaningful action at local levels will help us move the needle on the most urgent conservation issues facing our blue planet.”
The program does not require Adopt The Blue sites to be diveable, meaning PADI Members can identify any underwater site anywhere in the world that is important to them. These sites could contain an iconic habitat or species, such as mangroves, shallow water seagrass beds, nursery sites, or breeding grounds; even sites that are of particular economic benefit to local communities – as they all contribute to PADI’s overall vision to restore balance between humanity and the ocean. Once the sites are adopted and listed on the Adopt The Blue platform, PADI AWARE Foundation can coordinate the appropriate local, regional and national conservation efforts.
CITES 2022 PADI Divers Come Together to Reach Landmark Win for Sharks & Rays at CITES! On November 14 more than 2500 people from 180 different countries traveled to Panama to attend CITES (Convention on Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). This year the focus was put on sharks, and PADI AWARE was there supporting the protection of key species. Sharks play a key role in the aquatic ecosystem and determine the overall health of our ocean. Over two thirds of the countries attending CITES voted in favor of placing strict regulations on international trade of more than 50 species of shark, including their fins and meat. Certainly, this was a main triump for conservation and a landmark in ocean health.
HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED AT CITES ATTENDEES AT CITES On such a special day, PADI AWARE participated by providing advice to all the government representatives with figures that show the income that the coastal communities and the world receive from the scuba diving industry and sustainable tourism. “Responsible shark tourism is an important financial gain for coastal communities all over the world. Having an ocean with healthy shark populations is also vital for the health of other marine ecosystems that sustain the fishing activity of the local communities”, said Ian Campbell, Associate Director of Policy and Campaigns for the PADI AWARE Foundation. He also adds, “Ensuring solid conservation PADI AWARE ANNUAL REPORT 2022
measures to protect sharks will not only contribute to an economic viability for the communities but to their food security.” Campbell attended CITES together with Julio Salvatore, Regional Manager South America for PADI. In addition to attending the meeting to represent your voice, PADI mobilized its global community formed by 128,000 PADI professionals, 6600 PADI dive centers and more than 29 million PADI Divers to support the cause by communicating and urging their governments to accept this proposal 37, which aimed at protecting 54 shark species. These were days of much hope, support, activism and nervousness. 14
COMING TOGETHER FOR THE SHARKS The convention center in Panama was decorated with sharks in every possible shape and color. The corridors were covered with shark photography and a lot of attendees were dressed up as sharks! People were showing their love for the sharks by wearing shark hats and displaying shark toys throughout the event. All of these people spoke different languages and came from all over the world, but were all on a mission to speak up for the sharks. Many global organizations supported the shark proposals, including the Wildlife Conservation Society, IFAW, Shark Advocates International and Humane Society International, with PADI AWARE being the only organization representing recreational divers.

WHAT’S NEXT Thanks to the help of AWARE, PADI Dive Centers and Divers, over 50 new species were protected at CITES in a landmark win for sharks most commonly sighted by divers, like the black tip reef shark, hammerhead and bull shark. What happened at CITES is only proof that we can all come together and have the power to change the world for the better.
It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what your position is. As scuba divers, we are lucky enough to know the beauty of the ocean depths and to understand the importance of protecting it. That is why we need, now more than ever, to carry this message to those who still don´t know it. We are and we must become ocean ambassadors.
OUR GLOBAL CONSERVATION POLICY ENGAGEMENT UN OUR OCEAN CONFERENCE IN PALAU In March 2022, PADI AWARE was invited to be part of the US State Department’s conservation initiative as part of the UN ‘Our Ocean’ Conference in Palau. PADI AWARE was one of five entities requested to showcase marine conservation work within the conference and during this global summit, World Leaders Pledged $14 Billion for Ocean Conservation. PADI AWARE are proud to be part of this incredible commitment for Global Impact as we committed to launch our Adopt the Blue program - the world's largest network of underwater sites for conservation action.
UN OCEAN CONFERENCE IN LISBON, PORTUGAL The Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, came at a critical time as the world is seeking to address many of the deep-rooted problems of our societies laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic and which will require major structural transformations and common shared solutions that are anchored in the SDGs. To mobilize action, the Conference sought to propel much needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action. PADI AWARE was also invited to present our work at the UN Ocean conference in Lisbon in April 2022.
