ABOUT

FAITH MICHAELS Faith Michael’s name pays homage to two of the biggest pop stars in history: Faith Evans and George Michaels. “I saw a cassette tape with the name Faith written in gold,” explains the female impersonator‐turned‐music star. “I was mesmerized by the beautiful woman who sang such strong, powerful tunes. “When deciding on a last name,” she continues, “I was torn between Lady Faith because it sounded classy and Michaels because George Michaels sang about faith. “For I’m guessing the first time in his life, George came out on top,” laughs Michaels. Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, Faith Michaels always had an affinity for strong, beautiful women with amazing hair and stunning smiles. She loved TV shows like Wonder Woman, Charlie’s Angels and The Bionic Woman. Her mother would ask her young son if he was going to marry Wonder Woman. Michaels secretly knew he didn’t want to marry Wonder Woman, he wanted to be her. She entered her first beauty pageant in 1997. It was a pageant for amateur drag queens and Michaels took home the top prize, the title of Miss Carousel. It launched what would become a seven‐year career performing Arizona drag clubs. Then in 2003, Michaels was offered her own show at Aqua Night Club in Key West, Florida. It’s a show she continues to perform weekly today.

Her mother and brother attended Faith Michael’s final Arizona performance. Her mother, who had once feared a negative crowd reaction for her boy, cried when she saw the love audiences showered on her son. As a mom, it didn’t matter to her that her boy wore gowns. She only wanted to know he was safe. When Michaels confided to his mother his own fear in moving to Key West, it was his mother that told him he had nothing to worry about. The people loved Faith Michaels in Arizona. Mom knew Florida would love her too.

“People have long been fascinated with female impersonation and drag queens,” says Faith Michaels today. He credits popular culture, specifically TV shows like Will and Grace and Modern Family, for helping to demystify alternative lifestyles. “Will and Grace made everyone want to have a gay friend. Modern Family shows a gay couple with their child and a family that accepts and loves them. Both shows have brought LGBT life into America’s living rooms and have helped people realize we are really no different from them.” Faith Michaels recalls how RuPaul once said, ‘You are born naked and the rest is drag’. “It’s so true. We’re all drag artists. Some are pretending to be people they are not. Others are hyper‐glamorizing their outer selves to match the fabulousness they feel inside. As long as we are queens, celebrating our personal greatness, and not drags, sucking joy from those around us, we’re all good.”

Beat Box Tracks Poppin’ Into Clubs By Jimmy Newsum After beating a retreat in the face of the hip hop explosion, great pop music is on the march again. The last couple of months have seen brilliant singles from pop artists Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Ke$ha. Here are some of the best new tracks popping into gay clubs this month. “Fetish” Faith Michaels (See interview in this issue) In Fetish, Faith Michaels digs into clubland’s hard-core underground roots. The record is a throwback to early nineties dance floors - BG (Before Gaga) - when Madonna reigned supreme with grungy, dark dance tracks. Like Erotica, the substance of Fetish resides in haunting, straight-talking vocals that intimately educate the meaning of a fetish. The vocals are alluring and with the help of catchy grooves, Faith Michael’s draw listeners into her cavernous sex den. There’s a strange heaviness amidst the naughtiness on the track: at its core is a lesson of acceptance of others that resonates well beyond the dance floor.
