Mommy Bloggers Need to Shut Up About This Dirty Gay Billboard Is there anything worse than mommy bloggers? That is a rhetorical question because if you have two firing synapses, you know the answer to that question. Now one of them is all up in arms about a Manhunt billboard that dared to be on the way to her child's school.

Oh, poor mommy bloggers. Here is one who doesn't want to explain why two shirtless men are almost kissing on a billboard for a gay hookup iPhone app. But you don't understand. It's near her kid's school and they have to see it when they go to school. And the men are almost kissing! And they have on dog tags. That means they might be army men. Her kid loves army men. How, oh how, does she talk to her 9year-old about gay people? Ugh, I wish I was making all that shit up, but it's right there. You try explaining the "Zero feet away MANHUNT MOBILE" phone application to your 9-year-old son. A 9-year-old who loves Army guys, and so noticed the dog tags right away. It's not the blatant porn-iness of the over-lit image, or that it is of two men. It would be equally annoying if it were hetero. It's the fact that I am forced to figure out a way to frame to my fourth-grader the fact that some people like to find causal sex partners fast using their mobile phones. This writer is trying to paint herself as a liberal, sex-positive, feminist, but, guess what, the fact

that the billboard depicts two men is the entire story here. You say that you would hate it if it was hetero but, since we still live in a very heterosexist society, you wouldn't even notice it. You don't notice all the times that straight people making out are shoved in your face, whether it's PDA on the street, sucking face in movies, or some snuggly lingerie ad or KY Jelly commercial or some other bullshit. Straight people making out is everywhere and that is probably the reason your son doesn't ask about it, because he is totally inundated.

Now a gay ad is something different. Most companies are too ashamed to put them up there because they're afraid of people like you, people who lose their fucking minds as soon as a kid might see a display of normal, natural adult homosexual sexual expression. Your son is nine. He might have had a gay teacher in school already. He might have had a gay babysitter or a gay cousin or a gay uncle or a gay daycare worker. Gays are going to be a part of his life, especially if you live in a metropolitan area like L.A. (where this billboard is). So, take this chance to talk to your kids about gay people.

You don't have to get into the mechanics of gay sex. Tell him that some men fall in love with other men and like to kiss those men. Tell him that some of those men are in the Army and that is a right that they fought long and hard for and it is one they just acquired recently and it was a big victory. He's going to need to know these things. All this knowledge doesn't even consider that your son might be gay right now and this could be a formative experience in his life. If you say this billboard is shameful but all the ones of men and women kissing (that you don't even notice) aren't, how is that going to change how he feels about himself? Yes, your freaking out about this billboard and demanding it be torn down is contributing to homophobia, both internalized and externalized. What if he asks what it's an ad for? Tell him it's for a way for men who fall in love with other men to meet. Easy as that. You don't have to tell him it's for sex. You can tell him it's for love. The author says she doesn't like to lie to her son, but lying to kids that only people in love have sex is one of the great lies that our society perpetrates. It's like Santa Claus, "it's what's on the inside that counts," and "if you try really really hard you can become President." None of those things are true, but you tell him anyway. The problem isn't that this author didn't want to lie, it's that she doesn't want to tell the truth, or the truthiness. The author says it's not the gay people that bother her, but the casual sex. Your kid probably doesn't even know about sex yet, so he'll only know about casual sex if you explain it to him. Guess what, leave that part out! Problem fucking solved. This is "mommy blogging" at its worst. It is someone who is trying to deny the rights and free speech of others because she thinks her kid is in danger. The only thing he is in danger of is learning about the world, and it is your job to guide him through it. Some things you're not going to like, but you're going to have to do it anyway. And don't give me that, "But I'm so liberal," bullshit because, when it comes down to it, when it comes down to the thing you care about the most—your kid—your political beliefs go right away and you're just another privileged heterosexist asshole. You are part of the problem. If you're too weak to stand up for what you believe in, and instill those beliefs in your child, then maybe you should be the one reading about parenting instead of writing about it. Manhunt Mobile Ad Featuring Two Men Kissing Upsets Parents (PHOTO) First Posted: 11/30/11 08:43 AM ET Updated: 11/30/11 08:43 AM ET React A new billboard for a gay dating and social networking website is causing controversy in Los Angeles, particularly among parents who feel the ad is simply too scintillating for their youngsters' eyes. Shot by famed Spanish photographer JP Santamaria, the Manhunt ad -- used to promote a new component of the site exclusively for use on portable devices such as iPhones and iPads -- features two barechested male models in a sensual embrace. Manhunt's Jason Harvey acknowledged in a blog that both the site itself and advertising agency Lamar Advertising received a flurry of complaints immediately after the new campaign premiered. A Lamar rep said that the agency went to great lengths to ensure no billboards featuring the photo were "not within 500 feet of schools, churches, playgrounds, etc." The rep went on to note, "When we originally placed the units, we used our restriction codes that we have in our system for alcohol, to make sure that we were placing Manhunt in appropriate locations. Beyond that, we spent all day yesterday auditing each one of their locations to make sure that we didn’t miss anything or that a school/pre-school hasn’t popped up recently near one of their boards." Area parents seem to feel differently. "It’s not the blatant porn-iness of the over-lit image, or that it is of two men. It would be equally annoying if it were hetero," Kelly Cole, a self-described "liberal feminist" and mother of a fourth grader, writes on Studio City Patch. "I know some would tell me to use the opportunity for an illuminating conversation. But I don’t need Manhunt Mobile to set my Important Talks Agenda. Our family really could have gone awhile longer without that particular conversation—and should’ve been able to do so." Still, Harvey questions whether or not a similarly sexy ad for Michael Kors featuring a male and female model would've provoked the same level of outrage. "No, we don’t have any evidence that there weren’t any complaints to Michael Kors, his ad agency, or to L.A. political officials," he writes. "But we highly doubt that several media outlets approached them like they did us. Because, for some reason, gay sexuality is still scary and controversial for many people." Parents slam billboard showing two bare-chested men kissing for 'adding to children's premature loss of innocence' By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 10:35 PM on 30th November 2011

A billboard showing two bare-chested men on the cusp of a kiss has outraged parents who claim the ad is too risqué for their children's eyes. Parents say the advert, placed at a number of locations throughout Los Angles, California, will add to youngsters’ ‘premature loss of innocence’. The photograph, taken by outlandish Spanish photograph JP Santamaria, is to promote a gay dating and social networking website, Manhunt.

Outrage: Billboards featuring two men kissing to promote a gay dating and social networking website, Manhunt, have upset parents in Los Angeles, California

Its creators say the poster shows ‘two models in a sexy but tasteful pose together’ - and that they went to great lengths to avoid placing it near schools and parks. But Kelly Cole, a single mother of a fourth grader, said the image was impossible to miss on the way to her son’s elementary school.

'Tasteful': Spanish photographer JP Santamaria (pictured), known for his daring gay portraits, took the picture

‘It’s not the blatant porn-iness of the over-lit image, or that it is of two men,’ she explained in a Studio City Patch article. ‘It would be equally annoying if it were hetero. ‘It’s the fact that I am forced to figure out a way to frame to my fourth-grader the fact that some people like to find causal sex partners fast using their mobile phones. ‘I know some would tell me to use the opportunity for an illuminating conversation. But I don’t need Manhunt Mobile to set my Important Talks Agenda. Our family really could have gone awhile longer without that particular conversation—and should’ve been able to do so.’ The advert is for Manhunt on mobile devices, where gay men can see other gay men in their area using iPhones, iPads and Android phones. Following the launch of the campaign, Jason Harvey from Manhunt admitted the company was inundated with complaints about the posters. But advertising agency Lamar, behind the campaign, ensures it went to great lengths to ensure no billboards featuring the photo were ‘within 500 feet of schools, churches, playgrounds.’

Networking: The billboards are being used to advertise Manhunt - where gay men can get in touch with other gay men in their local area - for mobile devices

‘When we originally placed the units, we used our restriction codes that we have in our system for alcohol, to make sure that we were placing Manhunt in appropriate locations,’ the representative said.

Racy: Manhunt said a similar poster in Los Angeles of a man and woman has not provoked the same outrage

‘Beyond that, we spent all day yesterday auditing each one of their locations to make sure that we didn’t miss anything or that a school/pre-school hasn’t popped up recently near one of their boards. ‘We found a couple locations that were down the street (within 500 ft) from a church, so we have scheduled a rotation to move these boards to a better location for Manhunt.’ Manhunt’s Jason Harvey added a similarly sexy advert for Michael Kors featuring a male and female model has not provoked the same level of outrage. ‘No, we don’t have any evidence that there weren’t any complaints to Michael Kors, his ad agency, or to L.A. political officials,’ he writes on his blog. ‘But we highly doubt that several media outlets approached them like they did us. Because, for some reason, gay sexuality is still scary and controversial for many people.’ He added that Los Angeles had been the city of choice for the poster’s launch as it is ‘the focal point of our highly sexualized film and television industry’.

Report abuse Or maybe we need to teach, not only kids, but others too, that men and women alike are equal no matter what. No matter race, gender, sexual orientation etc. If a man and woman are in love, and it's okay to share that view with children, then why can't two men or two women be in love and show it? This isn't about children's 'innocence'. This is paranoia about the different types of homophobia that're out there. Some people don't want to admit that they're uncomfortable with public displays such as the one in this article, so they use their kids as a scapegoat. How about we show the compassion and the right attitude to this subject before kids get influenced by the negative homophobes that still inhabit this crazy world? Red arrow me all you like, but love, is love. The picture and advertising is tastefully done. It's not like it's pornography! - Jen, Colch, Essex, 01/12/2011 09:24 Click to rate

Billboard for Gay Dating, Social Networking Service Controversial?

A new billboard that shows two men about to share a kiss has parents concerned. So, here comes the controversy. The ad is for a gay social networking site called Manhunt, and the billboard featuring the shirtless men (one in dogtags) is located in Los Angeles.

the content overall. Manhunt's Jason Harvey fires back that "gay sexuality is still scary and controversial for many people," pointing to an LA ad for Michael Kors that shows a woman with her hand traveling down the front of some guy's underwear.

While this particular mommy blogger is getting her fair share of jabs and support alike, you can't deny the fact that overly sexual ad content is perhaps better suited for online sites or magazines for adults, and less fitting for a billboard that's in plain sight for kids to feast their eyes upon.

Ho, Ho, Ho: Manhunt Puts Billboard In Times Square

We New Yorkers usually loathe the throngs of tourists who invade the Big Apple around the holidays. But this Christmas we hope there are more of them than ever—so they all can see the big, juicy billboard Manhunt has placed in Times Square! The ad, one of several rotating promos that share the same billboard near the southeast corner of Broadway and 47th Street, is promoting the company’s new mobile service. Yes, the “zero feet away” reference will probably go over Jimmy Joe and Betty Sue’s heads, but the sweaty, hot dudes in dog tags about to make out is pretty unmistakable. We can’t wait for some annoying sexphobic mommy blogger to complain about this. Image via Linda Simpson

Some will cheer, some will toast, some will mumble made-up lyrics to “Auld Lang Syne,” and many will grab a significant other or stranger and engage them in a full-on lip-lock. Each of these, the last especially, is unavoidable. Why? Because it is tradition, so deal with it. So, what better time for gay social network site Manhunt to drum up some publicity by placing the

Located at the corner of Broadway and 47th Street, Manhunt’s billboard, which will be up through Jan. 6, was described to us in an email as “raising some eyebrows” and featuring “two sweaty guys in dog tags about to make out.” In the days since the “Zero Feet Away” campaign rolled out, it’s already greatly offended one L.A. mom, despite the fact that a similar Michael Kors billboard (depicting a woman placing her hand inside a man’s briefs) has been the subject of no such controversy. Most curiously will be how much (if any) airtime the Manhunt ad subjected to performances by Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and (new mother?) Beyonce.

A billboard featuring two shirtless hunks homing in for a kiss has stirred up some controversy. The ad, for the mobile version of gay social networking site Manhunt, recently debuted on a Lamar Advertising board in Los Angeles, where you'd think folks would have a lot more serious stuff to complain about. (The Kardashians come to mind.) One local mom, Kelly Cole, says she doesn't want her kids seeing such images of "blatant porn-iness," regardless of whether such material is of the homo- or heterosexual variety. http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/billboard-men-almost-kissing-offends-la-mom-136844

Manhunt's Jason Harvey thinks that's a load of hogwash, contending that "gay sexuality is still scary and controversial for many people," and noting that there's been no similar media frenzy over Michael Kors' new L.A. ads (posted after the jump) that show a woman sticking her hand down the front of a guy's briefs. I guess the hubbub was to be expected, since man kissing has been a hot topic in the past when it's surfaced outside niche media. As for the Kors billboard, a little to the left . . . aaah, perfect!

Gay social networking site Manhunt recently put up a steamy billboard in Times Square -- a day before the ball drops on New Year’s, reported Finding Out About in a Dec. 30 article. The ad, located on West 47th Street and Broadway, depicts two hunky dudes leaning in for a sensual kiss. The text reads "Zero feet away," which promotes Manhunt’s campaign for their mobile app. The ad is expected to be seen by many as more than one million people are expected to attend New York City’s infamous New Years Eve celebration. Several people are wondering if the billboard will be covered by ABC’S "New Years Rockin’ Eve," or CNN’s "New Year’s Eve Live" hosted by Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin. More than 1,532,000 viewers tuned into last year’s CNN broadcast, with millions more looking at across-network coverage of the ball drop. If the sign does end up on the programs, it will surely turn heads and be in the living rooms of millions of Americans across the country. Earlier this month, a similar ad by Manhunt received media attention when Linda Cole, a mother and a self-proclaimed "liberal feminist" from Los Angeles, complained about the billboard’s in-yourface sexuality in an op-ed piece for Studio City Patch. "You try explaining the "Zero feet away MANHUNT MOBILE" phone application to your 9-year-old son," she wrote. "A 9-year-old who loves Army guys, and so noticed the dog tags right away."

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Within hundreds of feet of Carpenter Community Charter, Rio Vista and Valley View Elementary schools are billboards that include an image of two seemingly nude guys in a near kiss; advertising for pot shops; and a suggestive picture of a woman in a thong, bent over, doing a poll dance. Here's a story from Kelly Cole, co-president of Valley View, who did something about it. Activists in the Cahuenga Pass area and Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council were also involved.) This past Mom's Talk issue is now on Gawker , CafeMom, The Huffington Post, Atlantic Wire, Momfia, FOX, AdWeek and the Manhunt site. Please weigh in with what you think! I never thought this would be me: A liberal feminist complaining about a sex-positive, homosexual billboard. Like that would ever happen. Well, it has and here it is. Because I’m also a single mom complaining about her child’s premature loss of innocence, caused by driving past this billboard every day on the way to elementary school. Twice a day, since the image is on both sides of the billboard on Cahuenga, the only way to get to and from school for many Valley View Elementary families. You try explaining the “Zero feet away MANHUNT MOBILE” phone application to your 9-year-old son. A 9-year-old who loves Army guys, and so noticed the dog tags right away. It’s not the blatant porn-iness of the over-lit image, or that it is of two men. It would be equally annoying if it were hetero. It’s the fact that I am forced to figure out a way to frame to my fourth-grader the fact that some people like to find causal sex partners fast using their mobile phones. I know some would tell me to use the opportunity for an illuminating conversation. But I don’t need Manhunt Mobile to set my Important Talks Agenda. Our family really could have gone awhile longer without that particular conversation—and should’ve been able to do so. I know I could have lied to my son, which I don’t typically condone, but honestly I couldn’t come up with a suitable story fast enough to fit that image and service. Still can’t. I know I should have a thicker skin, after a whole adult life in urban centers, and a career in media. I know I risk annoying some of my gay friends by drawing attention to it. I know I jeopardize my PC cred by letting the ad get under my skin. But as I wrote to the executives who own and run the billboard company, Lamar Advertising:

Under the lab coat The top sex stories of 2011

As a cover piece in The Atlantic suggested this year, male-female relationships are attempting to overcome some bumps. [Image credit: Flickr] By Susan E. Matthews | Posted December 29, 2011 Posted in: Under the Lab Coat Tags: biology, Health, new york city, politics If my mother is right, every year the world gets a little bit more sexually explicit — from movies to advertisements to politics to, well, even sometimes science. And while this perspective may be a combined result of time passing and my dear mother getting, well, older, we can’t deny that some of the top stories of 2011 have been rather sexually entangled. Well, isn’t that what makes the world go round? Here’s a look at some of the top sex-related stories of 2011. 8. Politics, of course, kept us on the edge of our seats with the multitude of sex scandals that disrupted this year’s democratic process. From Anthony Weiner’s sexually explicit use of messaging to Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s supposed hotel escapades to Herman Cain’s long line of alleged relations… John Stewart summed it up best, following Cain’s penchant for Pokemon: “I could use some pants.” 7. While Weiner definitely kept the idea of sexting in the headlines this year, a report released in December 2011 found that the explicit form of texting might not be as popular as we all imagine. It’s just that when it does happen, coverage explodes. Hopefully the new research soothes some concerned parents nerves. 6. But if parents are allowed to relax about one thing, chances are they’ll find something else to ruffle their feathers. An ad for the gay dating and social networking website Manhunt sparked controversy with its depiction of two nude male models closely intertwined. Parents argued that the image was too sexually explicit for children while gay rights activists retaliated that the ad would receive no complaints if it showed a heterosexual couple in such a pose. 5. Regardless of how divided the public is on homosexual PDA, the gay community won a major battle when New York legalized gay marriage in June of this year. Gay couples flocked to the largest state yet to offer such unions this summer. 4. While homosexuals rejoiced at their newfound right to marry, what marriage means today was a major topic of discussion — and no, not just amidst politicians debating whether gay marriage would ruin the sanctity of the union. According to The Atlantic’s Kate Bolick, marriage may already be an obsolete concept. The reason has nothing to do with gay marriage, and instead can be traced to differences between how men and women are handling, well, everything nowadays. 3. And yet our collective faith in marriage was perhaps restored by the over-hyped and over-exposed marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton. The best thing to come out of the affair? Commemorative Royal Wedding Condoms, of course. 2. We hope some of those condoms — or at least another variety — have been in use at one of the most news-worthy sites of 2011, Zuccotti Park. It seems that sex is an inevitable result of any kind of community, including one that is outdoors and in public. And while the protestors have been given a large supply of condoms, it doesn’t seem they’ve been taking great advantage of this free supply. Instead, a few of them have been requesting pregnancy tests. 1. Which brings us to our number one news story of 2011: on October 31st, the 7 billionth human was born. While this is obviously the result of a lot of sex, if we want the population to slow down its exponential growth (which we should, if we want to do things like eat), we’re going to have to either slow down on the sex or increase access to safe and effective birth control. I’d suggest focusing on the latter, as it seems hopefully more feasible. Posted in: Under the Lab Coat Tweet

Mom's Talk: Sexy Billboards Near School—'Zero Feet Away' From My 9-Year-Old - Studio City, CA Patch

1/2/12 11:47 AM

“No matter what one's politics, religious beliefs, or moral compass says about this, does it not seem obvious that this ad is inappropriately placed when it becomes forced viewing for hundreds of children daily?”

Driving to school this morning, and TWO MORE billboards of the same ad have now gone up, all within approximately a mile of each other, of Valley View and South Weddington Park. So kids going to and from school on the West Cahuenga corridor now see that ad six times a day, five days a week. Thirty impressions per school week. Two of the three Man Hunt Mobile billboards we see on our drive to school came down on Monday. Why, exactly, is not apparent, since my emails to three staff members of Councilman LaBonge, and three executives at Lamar, and my follow-up emails, were never acknowledged. My neighbor, a longtime resident and realtor, spoke to a couple of key people connected to the Neighborhood Council and LaBonge's office about the billboards too. Whatever the reason, they're gone! And I'm zero feet away from a lot of gratitude.

EPILOGUE: As of Wednesday morning, some of the billboards are coming down. Kelly isn't sure it has anything to do with what she complained about, or the phone calls to Lamar in New Orleans, or the activists she was in touch with, but they are down for now. There's a bigger issue about the proliferation of billboards in the area, and also the content on it, but for now this issue showed that a mom's concern created some action. What do you think? Answer in the poll! Here's a follow-up: Manhunt Responds to Studio City Patch's Mom's Talk Column

Do you think billboards like this should be near schools? Sure. What's the big deal? Talk to your kids about it. It's OK, but there should be some ways parents could weigh in. Absolutely not, it's offensive. There should be a law restricting this around schools. All billboards should be banned. Total votes: 1757 Submit

Once again, people were up in arms over an image of two men ALMOST kissing, and it happened in Los Angeles. Sigh.

(I'm so glad heterosexual America embraces homosexuality and is comfortable with images of shirtless men embracing. Ooops Wake-up call. This is 2011. Not so fast, fella. We need to wait a few more decades for that advancement.) This time, the nefarious image was a billboard on Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood promoting Manhunt's location-based dating app. It showed two shirtless men seemingly ready to lip lock. That dastardly photo was too much, last month, for a mom, who had a temper tantrum. She said it was too close to her 9-year-old son's Valley View Elementary School, and she would have to explain the billboard's meaning to him. The Atlantic Wire chronicles the entire desperate housewife-inspired brouhaha. (The nefarious Manhunt billboard that caused the brouhaha and a nearby, innocent Michael Kors billboard that was - apparently - too tame to cause an uproar.)

Manhunt, a gay social networking site with over 6.5 million users, has erected a racy billboard in Times Square right in time for New Year's Eve. And with an estimated crowd of one million people -- many of whom will be searching for a New Year's kiss -- the billboard's location on 47th Street and Broadway is a pretty strategic place to be. The "Zero feet away" campaign promotes Manhunt's mobile app for the iPhone, Android, and iPad, and it has already drummed up quite a bit of controversy. Linda Cole, a mom and self-proclaimed "liberal feminist" from Los Angeles, wrote an op-ed for Studio City Patch to complain about the billboard's "blatant porni-ness."

"You try explaining the “Zero feet away MANHUNT MOBILE” phone application to your 9-year-old son. A 9-year-old who loves Army guys, and so noticed the dog tags right away," she wrote. Manhunt's blog pointed out that a Michael Kor's underwear ad featuring a woman reaching into the front of a shirtless man's briefs was mere blocks away from Manhunt's billboard of two men almost kissing.

Only time will tell whether the dating site's billboard will get anyone's attention as they wait for the ball to drop. Furthermore, AgencySpy is wondering if the billboard will get any airtime from the many networks filming New Year's Eve in Times Square. Last year's "New Year's Rockin' Eve" on ABC attracted 18.8 million viewers in its final hour. The last 60 minutes of CNN's "New Year's Eve Live" with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin pulled 1,532,00 viewers. Cameras may shy from the sexy billboard, but if not, that's a lot of publicity. The sign will be up through January 6. Please follow Advertising on Twitter and Facebook. Follow Laura Stampler on Twitter.

Is the Difference Between These Two Ads Homophobia?

ALEXANDER ABAD-SANTOS NOV 30, 2011

The Players: Manhunt, a gay dating site founded in 2001 with over 6.5 million members and their new, racy, gay billboards; Kelly Cole, co-president of the Valley View elementary PTA who thinks those ads are too racy and gay. The Opening Serve: Manhunt's recent ad campaign for the location-based dating app has hit billboards in Los Angeles. "Zero Feet Away" is the tagline, and it features two, shirtless, almost-kissing men. Manhunt says that the ad sparked dozens of complaints which began pouring into its Massachusetts headquarters, but one mom blogger pushed their ads to national attention. "I never thought this would be me: A liberal feminist complaining about a sexpositive, homosexual billboard. Like that would ever happen," begins Cole, a co-president of the Valley View Elementary PTA. "You try explaining the “Zero feet away MANHUNT MOBILE phone application to your 9-year-old son. A 9-year-old who loves Army guys, and so noticed the dog tags right away." She explains it's not the "blatant porniness" or that the ad is gay-focused which bothers her:

It’s the fact that I am forced to figure out a way to frame to my fourth-grader the fact that some people like to find casual sex partners fast using their mobile phones... But as I wrote to the executives who own and run the billboard company, Lamar Advertising: “No matter what one's politics, religious beliefs, or moral compass says about this, does it not seem obvious that this ad is inappropriately placed when it becomes forced viewing for hundreds of children daily?” !

The Return Volley: Studio City Patch, where Cole published her op-ed, is reporting that some billboards are coming down and a Manhunt spokeswoman said the ads expired earlier this month. Patch has a response from Manhunt and its advertising agency to Cole's column about the legality and placement of the advertisement. It reads, "Lamar [the ad agency] has taken a unified stance in defending our right, and theirs to advertise this business on our billboards, provided they are not within 500′ of schools, churches, playgrounds, etc. ...So Manhunt was within the letter of the law, AND went the extra mile to make sure our ad was appropriately placed." Gawker's Brian Moylan, went a little further. "This writer is trying to paint herself as a liberal, sex-positive, feminist, but, guess what, the fact that the billboard depicts two men is the entire story here," wrote Moylan. "You say that you would hate it if it was hetero but, since we still live in a very heterosexist society, you wouldn't even notice it ... Most companies are too ashamed to put them up there because they're afraid of people like you, people who lose their fucking minds as soon as a kid might see a display of normal, natural adult homosexual sexual expression." Which brings us to another Manhunt point. On their official blog (NSFW) they point out that just a few blocks away, there's a Michael Kors billboard featuring a woman putting her hand down a half-naked male model's underwear. "No, we don’t have any evidence that there weren’t any complaints to Michael Kors, his ad agency, or to LA political officials. But we highly doubt that several media outlets approached them like they did us. Because, for some reason, gay sexuality is still scary and controversial for many

!

What They Say They're Fighting About: Homophobia. Cole consciously and quickly denies she's homophobic and points out that her complaint pains her since she's "sex-positive, liberal feminist." She's also very aware that her opinion could be construed that way, noting out loud that she's afraid of hurting her "PC cred" and "annoying her gay friends." Moylan and Manhunt are on the same page. Cole may not be engaging in the blatant hate speech of Westboro Baptist Church, but she's still being intolerant of gay rights. Manhunt, thinks it's being unfairly attacked for depicting gay relationships since the Michael Kors billboard is just as, if not more, racy without the controversy. What They're Really Fighting About: Business. At the end of the day, Manhunt is selling a product. It's a company, it has no feelings, and its best interest is making money. And it seems they went out of their way to comply with rules to get their advertisement posted. What's driving their fight for equality here is that these complaints, especially when they garner attention, have the possibility of making it even more difficult for Manhunt to sell their product, their website, and their advertisements if they're going to face unequal and unfair adversity compared to their heterosexual competitors and counterparts. Who's Winning Now: Manhunt. Any publicity is good publicity, and publicity is even better if your ads are in the process of coming down. And granted, this outcome would be a little different if the ad went up in a tiny town rather than a metropolis like Los Angeles, but even then Manhunt did its homework by abiding to a 500-foot rule. So where exactly is the op-ed slamming the Michael Kors ad that's a few blocks away? It's hard to see a difference between the two, and if anything, a woman preparing to fondle her shirtless partner seems a bit racier than two shirtless men non-kissing. Instead of providing an argument that racy ads, regardless of sexual orientation aren't child-appropriate, it seems like Cole (to her own detriment) and the rest of the complaints are singling Manhunt out. Cole does make a point about that it's the "casual sex" angle of the ad, possibly lying to her child and how she had to explain it to her child that bothers her, but it brings into question if Cole has the same thorough explanation with her son in regards to the racy Michael Kors ad up the street or ads depicting cheeseburgers, cigarettes, and alcohol, or her son's love of the army (read: wars and war casualties) which are all arguably more dangerous than two strangers, who aren't your son, having casual sex. If so, then props to Cole, but even more for her son for having to hear such depressing and awkward stories.

Could Tim Tebow Become America's First Openly Gay Pro Athlete? Written by Jonathan Higbee | Thursday, 12 January 2012

Tags: tim tebow, gay, homosexual, first openly-gay pro athlete, denver broncos, video, lisp, kiss, rumor mills, football

The realm of speculating a celebrity's sexual orientation is a province best left unentered. But it appears Tim Tebow has invited the churns of the rumor mill with pious public professions and other "evidence" now garnering headlines in the mainstream blogosphere. Fresh off the cleated heels of winning ESPN's America's Favorite Athlete poll (albeit by a slight 3 percent edge), Tim Tebow's sexuality has moved beyond the fringe to become a mainstream topic. First up, a parody of the controversial Manhunt billboards has made Tebow and fellow QB hottie Tom Brady the subject of many a gay Facebook posts this week (less evidence and more entertainment, admittedly):

But the loudest testament to a gay Tebow (according to hordes of homosexuals and some leading blogs in recent days) arrives in the form of the quarterback's post-Steelers game interview from late last year, a video that's also spreading like wildfire across social networks:

Normally, I wouldn't spare a single thought to men prone to slightly-lisped, wrist-flailing demonstrations (who cares?!), but when it's the aggressively evangelical and anti-gay organization-associated Tebow, folks—even the open-minded gays who are regularly subjects of stereotypes themselves—begin to assess the situation. Lord knows (apologies for the pun) that history is littered with devoutly-religious types finding themselves "exposed" as homosexuals, and study after study continues to reveal that ardent homophobes are more often than not self-hating gays themselves.

But what if Tim Tebow was a gay man? Subscribe

Deadspin imagines the scenario brilliantly: "Tebow would have an incredible opportunity to bridge the persistent divide in this nation between evangelical Christians and the gay community. I mean, honestly: It's time for this matter to be settled. Tebow could get his followers to be more accepting of gays, and he could get filthy liberals to be more accepting of evangelicals. I think he and Von Miller would make the cutest gay couple ever." I was raised in Middle America, taught to kneel before the alters of Christianity and football, so I couldn't agree more with Deadspin's romantic vision of an openly-gay Tebow. A selfappointed (and fan-made) prophet who could link the evangelical/homosexual gap? Imagine the implications. I couldn't even fathom as a Christian-school-boy grappling with same-sex attractions having someone like Tebow to look up to. Years of depression would've been shaved from my life. If the rumor based on archaic stereotypes and wishful-thinking holds even an ounce of validity, Outsports' Cyd Zeigler Jr. brings us back down to earth. "All that pious religious bullshit he spews…at the end of the day, that’s not him," writes Zeigler. "That’s what his parents and his pastors have drilled into his head from the day he was born. The kid doesn’t even know who he really is ... If he is in fact gay, he may not know it. Even if he does, chances are slim he’d be comfortable telling his mother… or pastor…let alone us. "If Tebow is gay, he is buried beneath so much crap he many never get out from under it. Instead of attacking him for it, maybe reaching out a helpful hand would be nice. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still a crappy quarterback. But all that 'my lord and savior Jesus Christ' stuff…could be Tebow’s cry for help." What do you make of the intensifying rumors surrounding America's Sweetheart? Should the gay community leave Tebow alone or should we amp-up our fascination with the country's "favorite athlete?"

Manhunt™ and DList™ Release Gay and Bisexual Men’s National Sex Study ‘Community Report’ Website CAMBRIDGE, MA: A new web-based community report from Online Buddies, Inc., parent company of Manhunt™, celebrates the diversity of gay and bisexual men’s sexual behaviors. Mensnationalsexstudy.com is a first of its kind website that provides scientific data in an entirely virtual manner. The community report, based on a recently published study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine which analyzed responses from nearly 25,000 users of Manhunt™, is in the form of an interactive website where visitors can learn more about the study results in a user-friendly and contemporary manner. “As the only online company that has a dedicated Research Institute which promotes an annual sex study with our members, we felt it important to translate conventional academic data into an easily digestible format for our members,” says David S. Novak, Managing Director of the OLB Research Institute and Senior Health Strategist, at Online Buddies, Inc. “While many people are familiar with our family of brands, they often overlook the work that we are engaged in related to health and research. Through the use of platforms such as www.manhuntcares.com and collaborations with leading sexual health experts, we strive to give back to the community by promoting scientific research that is both sex positive and innovative,” says Todd Sowers, Chief Marketing Officer of Online Buddies, Inc. According to the OLB Research Institute, to date, Manhunt™ members have participated in over 100 studies worldwide, with this year’s national sex study being the largest in the United States. The study itself, which focused on men’s most recent sexual event, found the sexual repertoires of participants to be varied, suggesting the need to rethink some common misconceptions about the sexual behaviors of gay and bisexual men. “As highlighted in the community report, the sexual experiences that men are having are not all homogenous. For example, less than 40% of men engaged in anal intercourse during their last sexual event, challenging the notion that ‘gay sex always = anal sex.’ By providing this information to our members, we hope to normalize their sexual behaviors and ultimately reduce existing stereotypes about gay and bisexual men,” says Novak. The community report examines in detail a variety of sexual behavior topics from the larger study and can be found in its entirety at www.mensnationalsexstudy.com.

Manhunt.net, the world’s leading website for men to meet men, celebrates its ten years this fall with the MANHUNT X TOUR 2011, a twenty city club tour. Presented by Dick Dorm, the parties unite leading circuit DJs with some of the biggest names in porn, including Dirk Caber who will perform live with fellow Titan studs Hunter Marx and Ethan Hudson at Sidetrack on October 28. Andrew West: You’re a real man’s man. You must do great on Manhunt. Dirk Caber: I've made some great friends and have had some stellar sex with men I've met on Manhunt. A.W: Are you hooking up all the time? D.C: I don’t hook up as much as you might think. I'm more about quality over quantity. I usually have to know a guy a little bit before I fully find him attractive, so I need a little back-and-forth online before I will agree to meet. A.W: What are some of the key words you use to get men on Manhunt? D.C: I think it’s best to be direct and honest about what you're looking for and what you offer. My Manhunt profile is only about 80 words long, but in that I cover that I'm easy-going, versatile, can do the vanilla-tooutrageously-wild gamut, I'm always safe and not particularly chem-friendly. I'm game to play with couples or groups when the dynamic is right. A.W: Have you always been an exhibitionist? D.C: No. I spent most of my life fat. 24

A.W: How fat? D.C: Like, porkerfat. Appleshaped. When I was about 30, I decided it was time to try to do a little something with myself before I ended up looking like my dad. A.W: Has the weight loss improved your life? D.C: I think I'm enjoying now what most guys experienced in their twenties. The good thing is I have the wisdom of a 40year-old. A.W: How did you find your way into porn? D.C: TitanMen was looking for men with BDSM experience for their Rough line. They courted me for about two years before I agreed to give it a try. I figured they'd have me in for one or two scenes and then some younger, sexier fellow would come along and that'd be the end of it. Eight movies later and I am still here. A.W: What is one thing you have done on film that you never thought you would? D.C: I didn't really see the point of watersports until I started filming them; now I'm completely turned on by it. Sliding a small smooth piece of metal into Ethan Hudson's urethra proved very challenging! A.W: What convinced you to try it?

October 25, 2011

D.C: Lots of S/M practices look horrifyingly painful until you actually try it. Being hit with a flogger will hurt, but if the guy throwing the flogger knows what he's doing - how to warm you up and how to read your responses - by the time it's over, honest to God, it's one of the best deep-tissue back massages you can get. A.W: Is there anything that you won’t do on film? D.C: I'm not game to show any unsafe sex. I feel it's important to be a part of depicting men having seriously hot sex that doesn’t jeopardize health or wellbeing. A.W: Would you date a porn star? D.C: There are some I'd marry. There's one in particular I met at Folsom this year who's really caught my eye. The thing to keep in mind is that for most, porn isn't going to be a life long career. You want to look at who that man is outside of his adult film persona. Making hot

have a hearty sense of humor, and tend to want to find the best in everyone I meet. I love to go out and dance the night away with friends, and I love to curl up on the couch with my guy, order in, and watch TV. A.W: What do you look for in a partner? D.C: Intelligence. Curiosity. A spiritual nature of some sort. Independence. There's got to be something about the guy which sets him apart as unique and makes me feel that I've landed a one-of-a-kind. A.W: What can your fans expect when you host the Manhunt X Tour? D.C: I'm a friendly guy who loves meeting the men who watch our videos. Come see me and my colleagues, tell us what your favorite scenes whoopie in front of the cameras now and for the next couple years isn't what's going to sustain your love for the guy when you're together at 75. A.W: Would you date you? D.C: No. I'd be too similar to myself. We'd fight a lot. A.W: What makes you a catch? D.C: I'm hugely affectionate,

A.W: Manhunt celebrates its big ten this year. Do you have a special birthday wish for them? D.C: I find the number of boyfriends and husbands I know who met on Manhunt has been dramatically increasing. Even if the point of the website is for more immediate hookups, longer-term connections are growing and that speaks only the best of what Manhunt is providing for the gay community. Manhunt.net is one of the most popular gay sites on the Internet. The site boasts millions of men from around the world looking for dates, friends, and hookups. It was founded in 2001 by Jonathan Crutchley and Larry Basile after the original telephone-dating venture "MANHUNT" had been a success. Tracking agencies list MANHUNT as being the most popular LGBT-oriented website in existence as of 2006.

Unlike a traditional dating service such as Match.com, Manhunt.net is a sex-oriented destination. Users divulge as little or as much of their fantasies as they desire in their profiles. Advertisements regularly feature gay pornography. Users also have the option of treating the website as any other dating site, posting non-sexual information and chatting with local men in the area. Some use the site to introduce themselves to the local social scene when moving to a new location or visiting abroad. Other users have a more sinister agenda: Cheating. Cheating on their wives, girlfriends, or maybe even their husbands. While cheating is as old as monogamy, the methods that make it such a viable option have not. With websites like AshleyMadison.com, users sign up with the express intent of cheating. But what about Manhunt.net? Upon close examination, something more sinister than social can be found lurking: faceless images of bodies all looking for an erotic escape. Dads, bored married men, young people—all cheating on their unknowing significant others. Naturally, the website can't be held responsible for people cheating of their own accord, unless Manhunt.net is intentionally giving

them the means to do it. During this investigation, an extensive search was conducted for individuals looking to engage affairs with married men. The search of a single area (Greater Boston) for the "Married Men" category exceeded the maximum available to display, which is 25 pages. One profile reads: "I'm married to a woman, but love the thrill of totally giving myself to a man." Manhunt.net had shifting answers regarding the company's involvement in facilitating infidelity. One representative named Shane had this statement: ...There are many guys that have a thing for married men. It's a taboo thing, I suppose. It gives married men a chance to find those that may be very into them, without having to post that [they] are indeed married in their profile, discretion and all. Ultimately, we are not responsible for what men do. Unsatisfied with this evasive and slightly alarming answer, another inquiry was made. A representative named Roberto responded that, "The decision to post that 'into' feature was not to encourage members to cheat on their spouses." He then forwarded the question to the marketing team who creates the categories. Married men are able to note this feature of the website before even signing up. A free search option allows men to browse those located near them, and in doing so, see their interest in "Married Men." From a marketing standpoint, it's a genius move. From a human perspective, the implications are saddening. Manhunt.net's answer regarding their non-implication in infidelity contradicts the site filters, which do disallow other interests. References to drugs, prostitution, and unprotected sex are fielded out through keyword filters, unlike "Married Men," which is an officially sanctioned interest on the website. The prevalence of married men on Manhunt.net has left many conscientious users posting "If you're married, I'm not interested" notes on their profiles. Granted, many married men in open relationships appear on the site as well. But no distinction is made by the website, conveniently facilitating supposedly straight married men in their illicit activities. As of the time of publishing, no response was received from the marketing team.

Will marriage change gay love? Many have embraced the romantic values of the mainstream -- and dropped ideas about alternative lifestyles BY TRACY CLARK-FLORY

With the sixth and largest U.S. state legalizing same-sex marriage, I began to wonder about the impact on gay relationships as a whole. Will dating become fraught with the prospect of a governmentally recognized happily ever after? Will the fairy-tale fantasy take hold in the same way it has for heterosexuals and shape romantic dynamics? I took these questions to some smart thinkers on LGBT issues and, resoundingly, the answer was: Um, that's already happened.

iStockphoto/Henrik5000/Salon

The gay community has long prided itself on the acceptance of more fluid romantic, sexual and familial relationships -- "alternative" lifestyles, if you will -- but for some time now, same-sex marriage has been the cause célèbre. "A generation of upper-middle-class white lesbians and gays are already enamored by the idea of marriage," Laurie Essig, a professor of sociology at Middlebury College, told me. The "ideology of romance" affects gays and lesbians as much as everyone else, she says. They are just as eager to "ride off into the sunset" with that person who "meets all of your emotional and sexual needs."

Michael Amico, a 26-year-old gay man and graduate student at Yale studying the history of sexuality, told me, "Ever since marriage was the gay issue, the diversity of types of gay relationships has narrowed," he said. "The major difference with my generation and those who were my age in the '70s and '80s is, I find, that no one can have a conversation about an open relationship." He points out that most young gay people consider same-sex marriage to be the No. 1 most important issue to them. "My question is, 'Why is it important to you? How does it matter to you?'" First and foremost, marriage seems to matter to gays for the same reason it matters to straights: a sense of romantic commitment and security. As Kelly McClure wryly wrote in a piece for Vice, "We can now legally, and in writing, demand that the person we love never ever leave us. EVER!! Or you know, until they sign another legal document that says they can." (With the right to marry comes the right to mock it.) In the piece, titled "How Gay Marriage Will Change Lesbian Relationships," she points out that the ol' joke about what a lesbian brings to a second date (a Uhaul) will need a new punch line: a wedding ring. On a more serious note, McClure explained in an email that the same-sex marriage ban never prevented her from playing house with girlfriends: "I've worn rings with partners in the past as a homemade version of being 'married,'" the 34-year-old New Yorker told me. "Now that gays can get legally married, I hope it feels as real as it is, and not just like an extended version of the fantasy land that we find ourselves flitting in and out of with our partners." The dream of the white wedding took hold long before same-sex marriage was even on the table -- and of course. "Everybody is told from the age of 2 that you're gonna grow up to be married," Michael Bronski, author of "A Queer History of the United States," says. "We have a $40 billion a year wedding industry." It isn't just young gay adults who have subscribed to the marital fairy tale. Bronski, who teaches women's and gender studies at Dartmouth College, tells me that his gay male students often express that "their parents, their mothers in particular, are really happy that they can get married and they are looking forward to them finding the right guy." These parents are part of a generation whose view of male homosexuality was shaped by the AIDS epidemic. "For them, marriage is not so much the happy ending as safety -- which is a complete fantasy, of course," he says. "The parents think of same-sex marriage as a prophylactic." The ideal of monogamous domesticity has hardly halted gay hookup culture on campus. "It's possible to have fantasies that are not congruent," Bronski points out. From talking with his gay students, he says it's perfectly normal for a young gay man to think that he's going to meet a great guy, get married and have kids at the same time that he's thinking, "Let's see who's on Manhunt right now!" When he asks his students -- gay, straight or bi -- about whether they want to get married, the usual response is, "I'd like to but I'm not planning on it right now." In other words, they're hooking up until they meet Mr. or Mrs. Right and settle down, just like their straight classmates. To some in the LGBT community, it all seems so traditional, so straight. "The last few times I've gone to Pride, I've chanted with friends, 'Put the alternative back in alternative lifestyle,'" Essig, author of "Queer in Russia," tells me. Her concern is that marriage ultimately doesn't make for a healthier, happier existence. "It diminishes the possibility of authentic human connection, because we're living off this script written by Disney or from some bad Julia Roberts romcom," she says. Essig expressed a similar sentiment in Salon in 2000: "What annoys me is that no one, not even queers, can imagine anything other than marriage as a model for organizing our desires," she wrote. "In the past, we queers have had to beg, cheat, steal and lie in order to create our families. But it's exactly this lack of state and societal recognition that gave us the freedom to organize our lives according to desire rather than convention." The marriage equality movement has inspired a small minority of gays and lesbians to speak out against same-sex and opposite-sex unions alike (see: Againstequality.org). In "Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage," Nancy Polikoff argues that marriage "is not more important or valuable than other forms of family, so the law should not give it more value," and people "should never have to marry to reap specific and unique legal benefits." If you thought the fight for gay marriage was contentious, just try to imagine a widespread movement to tear down the institution as a whole. Copyright ©2011 Salon Media Group, Inc. Advertising: Truthful. Having heard of Manhunt.net in the same way I’d heard of eHarmony or Match.com, I was expecting overblown claims and flat out lies. Instead, I was treated to a well-designed, unpretentious front page that actually offered to display in six different languages. Layout: Simple. They don’t ask too much of you when it comes to signing up; after filling out basic information and confirming your account via e-mail, you’re free to add to your profile or browse the site. Profile Information: Comprehensive. To say that the profiles are geared toward men searching for sexual encounters with other men would be an understatement. It would be easy to assume this makes the site limited in scope, but re-examining the name of the site here is paramount; this may be the first site I’ve encountered with a clever name perfectly suited to the service offered. Relationship Options: Satisfactory. Accepting that the site is geared toward men seeking men, the options are pretty open. At the same time, however, the site makes no attempt at assigning sexual preference. I know this must seem dense, but hear me out: the site is not just for gay men. It’s for all men seeking men. Say a man identifies as straight, but is looking for an ‘encounter’. Isn’t this something he would want to make clear? Would other users prefer to search by identifiers, such as ‘bisexual’, ‘curious’, 'straight', or ‘gay’? Matching: Satisfactory. The search function may be as specific as I’ve ever encountered, actually allowing the user to search by county if they see fit. The only problem is in the results returned; users are not ranked in any discernable order and cannot be sorted, and if you try to search within a specific distance of a location, 500 users are returned on 25 separate pages, no matter how far they are from your location. People: Real. Some accounts may have been vacated, which is hard to verify since it doesn’t say when they were last online, but there is no doubt in my mind that the people using the site are real.

Communication: Open. From what I can tell, communication is not restricted. Pay For: Several Features. Users pay to view full-sized pictures, send unlimited messages, view unlimited profiles, and save searches. As mentioned above, the limit to the amount of messages a user can send is not clear. It’s $12 per month or $99 per year, and though the standard auto-renewal plan is in effect, for a few dollars more, you can purchase a plan that

the cream of the crop. Any small level of dedication to the site can easily overcome its few limitations, and if the site’s owners saw fit to make any improvements, they would be easy to implement. from Palm Springs to India

5/13/2011 12:41 PM PDT Somewhere in India 2,000 gay men regularly browse through Manhunt.net profiles looking for companionship, love or just adult fun. That's how many active accounts the social networking site has so far in its ongoing efforts to take the brand global. It's a miniscule number comparison to the 1.2 billion people who live in India or the 100,000 accounts Manhunt wants to establish there in a year or two. But it's a s said Jonathan Crutchley, Manhunt.net co founder.

Manhunt has been translated into about eight languages, is accessible in 100 countries, and has about 2 million accounts worldwid said.

Another stumble in creating Manhunt's international footprint was offering a French translation on the site for Canadians. It was Parisian Fr and the men of Quebec didn't appreciate the translation, he said. The journey has been far less challenging in other countries. Mexico has 300,000 Manhunt users. In Australia it bypassed the competition to become the No. 1 site for gay men, Crutchley said. Crutchley's work with Manhunt has been an ongoing adventure as he's learned to maneuver through different cultures and technologies. "There's a lot of things you don't know about other countries until you go," he said. One thing he learned early on was to set an affordable membership rate for each country. For example, a monthly membership that costs $ the U.S. is 60 pesos, about $5, in Mexico. A third of all paying members are international and more than half of all traffic, including limited free access, is international, Crutchley said Technology has definitely changed the way gay men all over the world meet. I recently met a man who relayed how easy it was to meet guy Europe using a couple of smartphone apps like the wildly popular Grindr. The Grindr app allows a user to browse the profiles of other gay m with the phone application in the same geographic area, and to connect with them at any given time. Manhunt also offers apps for smartph For Crutchley, who's in a 12 year relationship with his boyfriend Jason, the widespread appeal of Manhunt.net shows that gay men in India just about everywhere else support his belief that "there's someone for everyone."

Online revenge can now mean felony conviction Posted on 25 Aug 2011 at 10:12pm

Chad West and Laura Martin Local officials stepping up enforcement of new Internet harassment law targeting those who harass, impersonate others online DAVID TAFFET | Staff Writer taffet@dallasvoice.com Dallas police and the Dallas County District Attorney’s office have begin stepping up enforcement of a 2009 Internet harassment law that makes it a felony to impersonate, imitate or otherwise harass others in e-mails, instant messaging programs and commercial social networking sites. And some gay men who use online dating and social media sites are getting caught in the crosshairs. “Word is getting out about the law,” Dallas LGBT police liaison Laura Martin said, adding that she’s spoken to a number of people who have been harassed with phone calls, Internet posts and fake Facebook pages. “It usually happens when a relationship ends,” Martin said, “[when] someone is seeking revenge.” She said that usually the person filing the complaint just wants the harassment to stop. And when she’s made calls to the person, Martin said, it usually does stop. But with the new Texas Penal Code 33.07, those using such sites to harass someone could be charged with a felony. Since the beginning of July, criminal defense attorney Chad West said he has signed four new clients charged under the law. Three of them are gay. The cases are varied. One involves harassment through a Facebook page; another is a “text message situation,” West said. West said one of his clients had been dating a closeted man for years. When the closeted man broke off the relationship, the two remained in touch for awhile, but then the closeted man wanted to cut off all communication. West said his client told him his feelings had been hurt by his ex’s actions and then “one night he did something stupid.” On Craigslist, the client posted his ex’s first name, last initial and cell phone number with a picture of someone else. Within minutes the ex began receiving calls. After talking to one of the callers, the victim found the page on Craigslist, printed it off and filed a complaint with the police who tracked the IP address. West’s client, with nothing prior on his record other than speeding tickets, was arrested and charged with a third degree felony. If convicted, he faces two to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. In another case, one man was impersonating his boyfriend online. Using the victim’s passwords, he signed onto dating sites such as Manhunt to find out if the victim was cheating on him. Cheating is not a crime. Impersonating someone else online in Texas is. And that man has now been charged with a felony. Manhunt does what it can to prevent that sort of situation, Manhunt CEO Adam Segel said. A button on profiles allows a member to report fake or malicious profiles. “Whenever Manhunt receives reports of harassment between users, we investigate to the best of our ability and take whatever steps are necessary to rectify the situation,” Segel said. “This may include suspension or deletion of the offending user’s account,” he explained. Segel said that Manhunt always cooperates with the police once officers have obtained a subpoena, but those instances are rare. “Fortunately this isn’t something we hear about very often,” he said. West has spoken to the victims in all of the cases he represents. He said that all of them just want this to go away and that none seem interested in appearing in court to testify about intimate details of their lives. And that’s the best hope West’s clients have. Defending the charge is difficult when police have hard computer evidence of where the harassment originated and when a victim is willing to testify, West said. The Craigslist case is furthest along and may be reduced to a Class A misdemeanor, but that still carries the possibility of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Probation or deferred adjudication are possibilities as well. Even if dismissed, the legal fees can mount quickly. West said one of the victims he spoke to isn’t interested in putting his ex in jail but wants him to get counseling. A judge could set that as a condition of the probation or deferred adjudication. Katherine Robinson is an assistant Dallas district attorney who prosecutes Internet crimes. She said that her office looks at cases like these very carefully, but because the law is still new, she hasn’t seen any cases come to trial. Robinson said the Texas law was prompted by a 2006 cyber-bullying case in Missouri. Megan Meier, 13, took her own life after being told online that the world would be better off without her by “Josh,” a boy who friended her on MySpace. “Josh” turned out to be Lori Drew, an adult woman. Megan was one of her daughter’s classmates. However, Drew had not violated any criminal law at the time. She was charged and acquitted of violating the terms and conditions of MySpace under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Robinson said that after that case, legislatures started enacting stricter Internet harassment laws.

“That case hit home how devastating it can be,” Robinson said. *

Assistant District Attorney Rick Watson has handled two cases under the Internet harassment law.

“I talk to the victim, balance what they want and make sure the public is safe,” he said. In one case, a high school student created a Facebook page with another student’s information and made threatening

The student received four years probation but only after a psych evaluation to make sure he was not a danger. Watson said the student thought he was pulling a prank, and had no idea he would be charged with a felony. Watson said that although charges may be reduced, they’re not likely to be dismissed.

Have you ever represented yourself as someone else online?

Yes No

West warned that although these cases may eventually be pled to misdemeanors, the arrest and associated costs can be enormous. He said that the potential is a felony conviction and with all the attention placed on bullying last fall, Internet harassment is being taken seriously by law enforcement in Dallas. And Dallas County is not the only place police are pursuing these cases. Of West’s four clients, only two are in Dallas. One is in Denton and another is in Collin County. ____________

This is just a publicity stunt – they’re not really serious about it. There’s a woman named Ginger Germany from South Dallas who often posts incredibly hateful stuff, using my name. I called the cops to see what can be done, and they just said “hire a lawyer”.

Sanders, Get in touch with Laura Martin. That is not how the police or DA’s office is handling this. There are limitations to the law, however, but both police and DA are taking this new law quite seriously.

SHOW OF HANDS—HOW MANY PEOPLE KNEW MANHUNT STARTED ON THE PHONE? In 1987, Larry Basile created Dial Information Services Corporation,a telephone chat line for gay men in the Boston area.Back then, customers paid 10 cents per minute to chat on party lines with local guys. Fees were applied to their phone bills. M O RE 26

FR O M 24

One of the chat line’s best customers was Jonathan Crutchley, who eventually joined Basile as a partner in the business. Then in 2001, the pair launched their chat line nationally on the web. Manhunt was born, growing into a phenomenon that would forever change the way gay men meet other gay men. Ten years later, Basile and Crutchley are making their grand return to phones with Manhunt apps for Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. Manhunt is the first gay site to offer ap ps for both platforms, allowing users mobile access to more than four million Manhunters around the world. It’s funny how history repeats itself. But only history will tell if M anhunt can remain on top of the gay hookup and com pete against the already established an d formidable lead ers of mobile, Grindr and DList. Has the final shot been blown in the hunt? We spoke with M an h u n t co-fou n d er Jo nathan Crutchley.

vertising. When they launch an app on the mobile phone, there will be a lot less space for ads. They may be between a rock and a hard place. W hen did you first learn about Grindr? I was riding in a taxi to an event in San Francisco in 2009 with another Manhunt employee when he took out his iPhone and showed me the new Grindr app. As we drove through the city the phone showed one guy two blocks this way an d so m eo ne else three blocks that way. It was a clever gimmick based on location, but who knew if these guys were what you were looking for? Did you know right away that it would be a viable competitor? N o, I didn’t, and we still don’t know. My first question about Grindr was “How does this make money?” From what I hear their revenue from $2.99 download fees and ad clicks barely covers expenses. If they were not profitable during the first year when they had no competition, how will they do when everyone else has an iPhone app going up against them?

Why has Manhunt been so slow to the mobile market? Slow? Better to get it right than rush out a bad product. Manhunt’s technical team has been busy developing at least six mobile products during the past year. The first releases last spring were for Dlist.com , our social networking site for younger gay guys. The final release was for M anhunt iPhone, which requires integration of our online data base of millions of guys’ profiles, more than 12 million pictures and the editing of content to meet Apple’s standards. That could not be done at internet speed. Part of the original success of Manhunt was that it was first on the market. Do you fear the delay in launching the app may cost Manhunt? Manhunt was not first on the market. We started in 2001, several years after G ay.com and a few others you won’t remember. We built a better product that guys found easier to use, and it surpassed the competition. Who uses Gay.com now? Does Manhunt take credit for changing the way gay men date in America? The internet changed the way gay men date in America. Manhunt was a part of that. N ow the internet is migrating to applications on the mobile phone platform. Manhunt is keeping up with the times. What does Manhunt mobile offer that the other mobile apps do not?

Why do you think gay men have taken such an interest in mobile dating? Gay men are the first to try new things, and for some time now gay men have been leading their lives around mobile phone usage. It had to happen.

Manhunt offers its number one strength: detailed profiles of more than four million local guys with over 60,000 online at any given moment. O ur profiles include multiple pictures, likes and dislikes, lists of guys who’ve checked you out and location and availability, to mention a few. The original Manhunt wasn’t very flashy. It was pretty low-tech and yet hugely successful. We’ve made Manhunt better with more features as time has gone by. Do gay men need the bells and whistles in their hookup sites and apps? O ur members want new features. There are other sites out there that offer less, and guys use those, too. If you want

a bare-bones service, Craigslist works for some. Why has no other website been able to beat Manhunt? O ur goal has been to offer the most to our members. My business partner, Larry Basile, likes to call our site the Sears Catalog for gay men. Everything you want should be there. Until recently, Adam4Adam was your biggest competitor. They are a free site, yet they still haven’t managed to topple the big guy. O ur market research shows that guys who are active users of Manhunt also have accounts with maybe four or five of our competitors as well, whether those sites c h arg e su bscri p tio ns or n o t. Adam4Adam is mostly supported by ad-

What’s Grindr’s biggest weakness and how will Manhunt use it to its advantage? Grindr shows you a picture and a location. O ther than that, not much else. M an hunt, G ay.com an d other m ajor hookup sites have large databases that can be searched for exactly the guy you’d like to meet, not just someone around the corner. Is it true the Manhunt app is sexier on the Android? I don’t think it is. Any way you access Manhunt is sexy! What do you hope to be remembered for? Hopefully I have started a business that will last 100 years, even if I don’t last that long myself. It’s an interesting question and makes me think back to when Johnny Carson was asked what would be on his epitaph. He said “I’ll be right back.” I’d like to borrow that line if I may. “I’ll be right back.”

Manhunt: 10 One-on-one with the Father of the Gay Online Hook-up By Sebastian Reynolds

In its tenth year, Manhunt remains the leading gay website in the United States. What began as a Boston-based telephone dating service is now a worldwide mobile powerhouse with more than five million members. As chairman of Manhunt, co-founder Jonathan Crutchley is the man behind the blue and orange curtain. We sat with him to discuss how he and business partner Larry Basile first came up with the idea for an online gay dating site; and how in ten years, Manhunt has changed the way gay men meet other gay men. Sebastian Reynolds: How did you become the ultimate gay matchmaker? Jonathan Crutchley: The truth is that I have always been a shy 40

and introverted person, especially when I came out as a gay man, which didn't happen until I was 30. Back then, gay bars and discos were the places to go to meet gay men. If you were a good dancer with a gym body and perfect hair, you made friends, but I was the guy watching all the others from a dark corner of the room. S.R: How did you hook up? J.C: It wasn't until the introduction of telephone chat lines, like the ones founded by my business partner Larry Basile in 1987, that I was able to meet guys and make friends. On the telephone lines you were a a voice. Fantasy is powerful, and it helped me emerge from my shell. Later, when I partnered with Larry Basile in the internet personals business, we perfected the use of fantasy to

help men meet each other. S.R: Are people surprised to meet the man behind the Manhunt curtain? J.C: Yes, the real me is not what people imagine. For twenty five years before Manhunt, I sold real estate and wore sport jackets from Brooks Brothers. You wouldn't find me marching in a Pride Parade with my shirt off. S.R: What is the secret to Manhunt’s success? J.C: Larry and I knew that Manhunt's customers are more than just those who live in gay neighborhoods in big cities. Gay men are everywhere, and with Manhunt, guys from Tennessee to North Dakota could find each other. Our customers are bears, leather guys, even married and bi-guys.

We developed a site that was user friendly and we emphasized our 24-hour a day customer service. S.R: How has gay dating changed in these ten years? J.C: Guys have always been looking for the same things. The web makes it easier to find

S.R: With new competition entering the gay online dating industry every week, what is Manhunt doing to remain on top? J.C: We always have to look over our shoulder to see who else is coming out with a different service that might catch on. Our biggest bet for continued growth is international expansion. There are more Manhunt subscribers outside the United States than within it. We are growing rapidly in Brazil and all of Latin America, and we recently launched in India. S.R: Do you pay attention to the competition? J.C: We would be silly not to.

exactly what you want.

S.R: Manhunt was criticized for being slow to the mobile game. Why did it take so long for Manhunt to launch its mobile ap? J.C: We took our time in development because we decided if best to stick by our old formula of quality as #1. We’ve learned through the years that exceptional quality and service will bring subscribers back and bring new ones onboard. S.R: How is the ap doing? J.C: We’re excited by the enormous growth. We first launched on the android platform and we were extremely well received. Once we introduced Manhunt Mobile on the i-phone platform, however, membership skyrocketed. S.R: How will men meet other men ten years from now? J.C: I'll send you a text message from heaven and let you know. Visit Manhunt.net.

Manhunt.net's gay Republican victim Jonathan Crutchley discovers how intolerant the gay community can be. By James Kirchick August 26, 2008

Two weeks ago, news emerged that the co-founder of the website Manhunt.net had contributed $2,300 to the presidential campaign of John McCain. Uproar ensued. Haven't heard of Manhunt? Unless you're a gay man, that's to be expected. It's one of the most popular gay websites in the world, with 1 million registered members in the U.S. alone and 400,000 unique visitors a month. As its name implies, it's a site where many gay men go to find casual sexual encounters. Manhunt and sites like it have revolutionized one formative aspect of gay culture, taking what was once a public activity to the privacy of one's home. Except that the Internet, as Jonathan Crutchley recently discovered, isn't really private. A successful real estate developer, he founded Manhunt with his life partner, Larry Basile, in 2001. He ran into trouble when Out, a gay magazine, published an article about the website in its current issue. The article, in passing, referred to Crutchley -- who until last week was chairman of the board at Manhunt -- as a "liberal Republican." That tidbit apparently shocked gay blogger Andy Towle, who within seconds found Crutchley's donation to McCain on a contributor database and posted the news on his website. The shaming and condemnation of Crutchley was swift and unforgiving. "Let's show MANHUNT what we in the gay community think of members of our community who support politicians who vote against the interests of the community," an anonymous commenter wrote. "Delete your MANHUNT profile!" Michelangelo Signorile, a gay liberal radio host, labeled Crutchley "asinine" simply for supporting McCain. Rarely do you come across a political candidate who shares each and every one of your political views, and Crutchley's support for McCain was hardly different from that of any other donor who doesn't make the perfect the enemy of the good. "I believe McCain will be a better commander in chief than Obama, who also opposes gay marriage," Crutchley wrote on a website that covers the

online personal ad industry. "If we have an experienced, seasoned person defending the country in this dangerous age, we will be able to argue about the gay agenda later." That explanation might not please every gay activist, but it is a feeling shared by many gay people. According to exit polls, about 25% of gays voted for George W. Bush in the last two presidential elections (the actual number is likely higher, seeing that many gays do not identify themselves as such to pollsters). The fact that Crutchley is a Republican ought not to come as much of a surprise then, especially considering that he's a self-made millionaire. And he's hardly a radical right-winger either. "I'm a Massachusetts Republican," he wrote, "which is about the same as being an Alabama Democrat." But such nuance is apparently irrelevant to those who equate homosexuality with political liberalism. Manhunt hasn't revealed how many people canceled their profiles. However, just how poisonous Crutchley's politics can be in a gay milieu can be deduced from the speed with which he stepped down from his position as chairman -- at "the request of the board," according to Basile. (Crutchley maintains his co-ownership of the site, meaning that subscribers will continue to put money into the pocket of an "evil" Republican in order to fulfill their sexual desires.) In an open letter that's been all over the blogosphere, Basile reassured users of the website that his partner's political beliefs were his own. "It is too bad for the website if we lose customers, but PLEASE never refer to me as a Republican. I consider it an offense," he wrote. Basile, who proudly pointed to his donation to the Barack Obama campaign in his letter, also claimed to the Boston Herald that the McCain campaign returned Crutchley's donation and that Crutchley, realizing the error of his ways, now supports Obama. There has been no independent verification of these claims, as neither the McCain campaign nor Crutchley have spoken to the media about the contretemps. If the intent was to silence a conservative gay voice, it appears to have succeeded. The hue and cry over Crutchley's politics is all too familiar. Why can't gay activists countenance the idea of a "Massachusetts Republican"? Liberal intolerance. In the minds of too many on the left, gay people (like women and ethnic minorities) have to be liberal and support Democratic candidates. To do otherwise -- that is, to have opinions on issues (even issues utterly unrelated to gay rights) that don't follow the left-wing line -- is to be a traitor to the gay "community." For too long, many gay-rights activists have acted as if throwing temper tantrums will magically bring about their political agenda. But labeling everyone with whom they don't agree a "bigot" does not help the worthy cause of gay equality.

The truth of the matter is that civil rights for gays can't come about without the help of Republicans. And this means that gay people -- and straight supporters of gay equality -- need to stand with, not silence, people like Crutchley who are working to change the GOP from within. Gays need only look to California, where a state Supreme Court loaded with Republican appointees legalized gay marriage and the Republican governor is one of the most powerful progay publicly elected officials in the country, to understand the importance of making gay rights a bipartisan cause. Gayness is a sexual orientation, not a political one. Aside from their sexuality, gay people are no different from heterosexuals. There are gay people of all races, income levels, occupations, body types and, yes, political beliefs. Gay liberals are always crowing about the importance of "diversity" and lauding its importance on matters of race and gender. Too bad diversity doesn't count when it comes to politics. George Michael revives decades-old debate Sex in bushes. Sex in bathrooms. Sex in trains. In planes. And in automobiles. Is it an integral part of gay male culture or not? The decades-old debate was revived last month when the British tabloid News of the World published photos of pop star George Michael as he emerged — in the early morning hours — from London’s famously cruisy Hampstead Heath. "Are you gay? No? Then fuck off!," Michael reportedly yelled at the photographer. "This is my culture!" Later, in an interview with BBC News 24 about the incident, which made headlines around the world, Michael said, "A very large part of the male population, gay or straight, totally understands the idea of anonymous and no-strings sex … The fact that I choose to do that on a warm night in the best cruising ground in London — which happens to be about half a mile from my home — I don’t think would be that shocking to that many gay people." Maybe not. But they don’t necessarily want Michael talking about it as gay "culture." Writing on the gay male entertainment Web site AfterElton.com, Brent Hartinger, who writes gay-themed young adult novels including the popular 2003 book Geography Club, claimed that calling cruising part of gay culture "confirms one of the worst stereotypes about us" and said that making that claim is as bad for the image of the gay community as "if Rosa Parks had been caught smoking crack." Blogger Andy Towle posted comments from Michael’s interview about the incident on a British talk show under the heading, "Will George Michael Please Shut Up." And The Washington Blade ran an article last week about public cruising. In it, sex columnist Michael Alvear denied that cruising is part of gay male culture while two gay social workers suggested excessive cruising can be a sign of sexual addiction. Tellingly, the Blade provided referral information at the end of the article for groups for sex addicts. Yet others accused the tabloids of sensationalizing a rather common part of gay male life. British author Mark Simpson argued on his blog that the tabloids consider Michael’s public sex exploits front page news "because many if not most men can perfectly understand the appeal of anonymous, no-strings, no-romance sex. It is this freely-available aspect of the homo demi-monde which most fascinates many straight men." Gossip blogger Perez Hilton wrote, "The British singer has repeatedly had to justify his horny toad ways. Why should he? So he likes to get laid. He’s a pop star. He should be getting laid — a lot! And, if his long-term partner [Kenny Goss] is cool with his philandering ways, then more power to him."

The good gay versus the bad gay The debate over the role of cruising in gay culture exposes an underlying tension in the gay community, which historically has campaigned both for greater mainstream acceptance and greater sexual freedom. Ben Perkins, director of AIDS Action Committee’s MALE Center, a community resource and wellness center for gay and bisexual men, said that arguments on either side of the debate rarely change, and he worries that it becomes an excuse to divide the community into "good gays" and "bad gays." "I think what it speaks to for me is the rocky road to acceptance and how easy it is to fall into this idea that there are the good gays and the bad gays, and the good gays are the incredibly respectable paragons of virtue who are fighting the good fight and the bad gays are out there, no pun intended, screwing it up for the rest of us," said Perkins. He also said labeling cruising in parks, whether at Hampstead Heath or in the Fens in Boston, as a gay phenomenon is misleading, since many of the men who cruise may be married to women and still others identify as straight. Yet while cruising for men in public places may not be an exclusively gay custom, cultural critic and Bay Windows contributor Michael Bronksi said that historically public sex was one of the crucial elements to the formation of visible gay communities in urban areas. "I think that historically sex and sexual connections have been the main infrastructure for gay male life in America, going back to post-Civil War America," said Bronski, who has authored several books on gay male culture. "Meeting people in public and often having sex in public, often because there was nowhere else to go, was vital to forming a public community."

That is hardly the reality for gay men today. But no amount of political success and public acceptance coupled with varied cultural and social venues for gay men to meet, has stopped men from looking for partners in the Fens or on hook-up sites like Manhunt and Craigslist. Bronski said the rise of political and social organizations, high school and college gay/straight alliances and gay bars and clubs have filled many needs for gay men, including finding friends, life partners, and safe spaces to be out, but they do not address the need to find sex partners. "[Gay male life is] also constructed around sex, and we need to find ways not only to facilitate people meeting for sex but to make those ways safe and to acknowledge the importance of it," said Bronski. But sex columnist Dan Savage disagreed. Cruising, he said, is a holdover from "the social compact pre-Stonewall, pre-the 50s" between gay men and mainstream society. "You may not come out of the closet, you may not live openly … but here are a few spaces where you can blow off sexual steam where we will turn a blind eye," said Savage. "That was the deal. We as a community I think have moved away from that deal and have asked for a new deal, and we want to live openly. I don’t think we have to judge people who still get off on that … I do think we need to be cognizant of where that culture came from and what it was crafted in reaction to." As for the continued popularity of public sex and its 21st century cousin, the Internet hook-up, Savage said it is less a gay thing than a guy thing. "That’s where the male thing factors in. It’s multifaceted. Men are ejaculation machines, and they only really need an hour or less of downtime before they need to ejaculate again," said Savage. "It’s not that they’re gay men, it’s that they’re gay men, and straight men would go to bath houses and public sex environments if straight women would."

‘Sex as a kind of handshake’ Whether cruising is a crucial part of gay culture or a holdover from the days of the closet, George Michael clearly is not the only one partaking, and it seems to be about as prevalent among gay men in their 20s and 30s as in their 40s and 50s. Jake Tinsley, senior community outreach and recruitment coordinator for Fenway Community Health, is one of the Fenway staffers involved in outreach to Boston’s most famous public sex environment, the Fens. Fenway’s data on the ages of the men they saw at the Fens during outreach last summer showed a wide spectrum of men: while there were only a handful of people younger than 20 and older than 60, Fenway counted 35 people ranging from ages 20-29, 52 people from ages 30-39, 43 people from 40-49, and 14 people from 50-59. Yet while the Fens draws gay men of all ages, the younger generation of gay men is the first to come of age since cruising became an Internet phenomenon. Despite the fact that young gay men can meet each other through LGBT student groups and other social venues aimed at LGBT young people, many still go on Manhunt and other sites to find partners. Michael Amico, a senior at Dartmouth College who is currently writing a book on gay youth sexuality, said even at Dartmouth, where there are active LGBT student groups and community spaces, male students still go on Manhunt to hook up. But he said most of those on Manhunt are either students who are still in the closet or who are not active in the campus LGBT scene. "There’s definitely more closeted guys at Dartmouth than there are more out guys at Dartmouth," said Amico. "For those closeted people who don’t want to be associated with a flamboyant out and proud gay man they’ll remain on the fringe … It’s a lot of the fringe gay people who you see on Manhunt. And at Dartmouth it’s a very small community. I think my profile on Manhunt at Dartmouth is the only one that has my actual face and a name." Amico said he does see a community aspect to the Manhunt scene, but he thinks it’s a community that the site’s closeted members do not experience. "I think that there’s community formation on Manhunt, but you only access it when you’re upfront and willing to take chances. I have met more interesting people and formed more untraditional relationships with people on Manhunt," said Amico, who said that while many of these relationships have a sexual component, they often become deeper than just a physical relationship. Phil Henricks, director of marketing for Online Buddies, the Cambridge-based company that owns Manhunt, agreed, saying that gay men have long formed friendships out of relationships that began with sex. "I think as gay men we often use sex as a kind of handshake or introduction. How many friendships or relationships do we have that began at a sexual level? It’s often the case that a few of your best friends and a few of your relationships began with sex," said Henricks. In the five years since the site’s launch Manhunt has become a virtual gay institution, and it’s big business. The site currently has more than one million members, with about 12,000 joining each day, and the site has expanded from the United States to the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Canada and Australia. Like Savage, Henricks thinks the popularity of the site has less to do with gay culture and more to do with the male sex drive, although he thinks the laws banning

same-sex marriage at the national level and in every state besides Massachusetts may lead some gay men to seek out hook-ups rather than long-term relationships. "I think historically there’s always been a level of casual sex with gay men. I’m certainly not a sociologist, but I think a large factor would just be the male sex drive. I think as gay men we often like to come down hard on ourselves for having active, often promiscuous sex lives and linking that with being gay, but I think the biggest issue there is we’re all men, and as large a proportion of straight men would be just as active" as gay men, if given the opportunity, Henricks said. Henricks said he does not believe Manhunt created new demand for sex among gay men so much as made it easier for men to find what they were looking for. But he said Manhunt has worked to try to make sure that their customers have access to information about staying safe, providing local health departments with free banner ads and accounts where they can do outreach to members and educate them about safer sex and getting tested. In a handful of cities, including Boston, customers who test positive for syphilis, gonorrhea and Chlamydia can log onto the site, enter the screen names of past partners, and send them confidential e-mails telling them they may be at risk and urging them to get tested.

Fodder for anti-gay activists One thing is certain about public sex in the gay community: no matter how often the community debates its place in gay male culture, it remains a contentious issue, and a politically explosive one. Earlier this month a Boston Herald report that Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus lobbyist Bill Conley had been arrested for allegedly soliciting sex for money from a college student on Craigslist, another site with an active gay male hook-up scene, prompted Conley to take a leave of absence from the Caucus and led MassEquality, one of MGLPC’s partners, to issue a statement saying Conley would no longer be lobbying for that organization. Conley’s arrest was controversial as much if not more so for the allegation that he offered money for sex, but the entire incident was quickly exploited by the anti-gay group MassResistance, which accused Conley, also a former member of the Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, of going after children. "We’ve been seeing these people at the State House for years. They are focused and obsessed with getting at your children, one way or another, with homosexual programs of the most horrid nature. This latest incident, sadly, doesn’t surprise us," wrote MassResistance’s post. Bronski said as the LGBT community pushes for mainstream acceptance there are no easy answers on how to prevent public and anonymous sex in the gay male community from becoming a political liability. But he said the problem will not be solved by denying that the culture of public sex is a part of the gay male community. "I think the tactic of saying this doesn’t happen when it does doesn’t work, because you’re lying. I think saying this is only a small group of people, a fringe freakish group of people doesn’t work because it’s not," said Bronski. "I think it’s always a mistake to pretend to be who you aren’t."

MANHUNTING MORMAN

By Nathan Chea, ManhuntDaily.com

Thousands of gay men pray daily to the Manhunt Gods for a heavenly gift, but Michael Walker has taken his worshipping to a whole new level. The former Mormon is Manhunt’s newest cover model. Is this another case of good boy gone wild? Perhaps. But this isn’t the first time Walker has made waves in the Mormon community. Last year, he came under fire when he and eleven other young Mormon men appeared shirtless in the “Men on a Mission” calendar. Walker escaped discipline then, but will he be as lucky this time around – especially considering he is now plastered all over the world’s leading gay website? We chatted with the rebel Mormon to learn why he did it and the repercussions he expects to encounter as the new face of Manhunt.

First, tell us about the “Men on a Mission” calendar. It started out as sort of a joke, but Chad (the creator of the calendar) and his team were very professional and it is truly something that I’m proud I was a part of. Why Mr. December? I wondered the same thing. Chad told me that my picture seemed like the perfect bookend to the other pictures. I can’t complain. Mr. December’s a good spot. Did you run into any trouble with the Mormon Church as a result of your involvement with the calendar? I was called by my Stake President (a local leader of the congregation in L.A.) but I never returned his call. I’ve heard that some of the other models in the calendar have had interviews regarding their involvement, but none have been ex-communicated, as far as I know.

The creator of the calendar, Chad Hardy, was excommunicated from the church. My heart goes out to Chad. Not only was Chad excommunicated, but they decided to strip him of his degree from Brigham Young University. They claim that they excommunicated him because of reasons outside of the calendar; something that Chad has told me is a bold-faced lie. It’s sad to me that all of this would happen to him over something so ridiculously innocent as a shirtless calendar. Is it true you donated your calendar earnings to the Ronald McDonald house? I served a two-year mission for the church at the Ronald McDonald house in Buffalo. It was an incredible experience and I’m thrilled I was able to support them through this project.

How has their position affected your relationship with the church? It forced me to call into question everything about the institution I was raised a member of. While I respect the Mormon church for instilling the values I carry with me today, the passing of Proposition 8 has caused me to lose my affinity for the church and left me feeling almost like I’ve lost a good friend or family member. It was the final straw that caused me to finally say “you’re not Mormon any more.” You’ve left the Mormon church? I had to. But that being said, I hope that people understand that there are many, many good and decent members of the Mormon church that understand our struggle and support us in every way. How did you become the face of MANHUNT? I have been an on-and-off member of Manhunt since I came out, about a year after my mission. They asked and I said yes. Had you done any modeling prior to the MANHUNT shoot? I was signed with Wilhelmina Models for about ten years, so I’d done random projects here and there. How was the photo-shoot? The shoot was very professional and relaxed. When I first arrived, I was adamant about not doing any shots in my underwear, but somehow they soon convinced me otherwise (laughs). Everyone was really nice and did what they could to make me feel comfortable. All our readers are dying to know…are you single? Yes. Single. My profile on Manhunt is a little different than a lot of the others you’ll find on the site, since I am primarily relationship-oriented. I’m a serial dater, but haven’t found him yet.

To say the gay community and the Mormon Church haven’t been getting along lately is an understatement. What are your feelings on the recent rift and on Proposition 8? This one’s tough for me. Growing up Mormon and gay has to be one of the most difficult social and spiritual conundrums anyone can be subjected to. I was deeply disturbed and saddened by the churches support of Proposition 8. Their usual non-involvement in politics rule was abandoned for a sickly impressive campaign that ended in the taking of basic fundamental rights for me and my friends.

a selling point, gaining him roles in Falcon’s Longboard and Rascal’s Bottom of the 9th: Little Big League III. After a few years in the business, Hall dipped his feet into directing with Vancouver Nights (a project for Fierce Dog Productions that he also executive produced) and launched ClubJeremyHall.com, which celebrates hot jocks from around the world. His latest venture is with Manhunt’s OnTheHunt.com, which sends veteran porn stars to direct shoots featuring amateur couples who meet on the popular hookup site. (See “Hunting for Dick” on page 30.) We caught up with the mogul-in-the-making for a sexy chat about going behind the camera, gear fetishes, and his ongoing love of sweaty balls.

hough Canada sometimes gets a bad rap for its exports (e.g., Celine Dion, Barenaked Ladies, Air Canada flight attendants), it should be noted that the Great White North has also been kind enough to send us Neil Young, Alanis Morissette, and Scott Thompson. You can add Jeremy Hall to that list. An impressionable 23-year-old when he ran into porn sensation Roman Heart in a Vancouver bar, Hall found himself fascinated with the skin trade and decided he’d like to give it a shot. Heart hooked him up with Falcon’s then-director of production, Chris Steele, who immediately cast Hall in Spokes III. Hall’s athletic background (he played hockey, rugby, soccer, and wrestling) became

So, what you always wanted to do was direct? When you say “directing” it’s kinda weird, because porn consists of everything from producing to editing. I consider what I’m doing very amateur. I don’t really consider myself a director or even a model. I just do everything. But what always intrigued me about doing porn was the idea of getting people off, so it’s cool to be able to be in control of that and do the kind of stuff that I think will get people off.

How’s it going? I enjoy it because I can travel a lot and I’m my own boss, and if I wanna sleep in, I can. [Laughs] I love the travel. I’m happy to be in Fort Lauderdale doing shoots one week and the next week I’m in L.A. or D.C.

We hear you’re attending college in D.C.? Yes, I’m studying Web development at Georgetown University.

With long breaks for fucking, we hope. How does directing compare to modeling? It’s definitely more challenging. With modeling you just show up, have some lunch and chat, then get a hard-on and go fuck. When you’re doing everything, you have to model and stress out about everything else that’s going on. When you’re going to produce and model you have to learn when to focus on just the sex and when to focus on everything else. That was a real learning curve.

Did the guys at Manhunt give you suggestions?

Yes, that’s what I’m going for. It’s all Web based, and my weakness is in back-end programming, so that’s why I’m in school.

Are you gearing up for a long-term porn career?

And having sex with hot guys. Yes, but you can have sex whenever you want; it doesn’t have to be your job. I got into this business when I was just coming out and exploring my sexuality. But the reason I stuck to it was because I liked being my own boss, and I think I’m good at it.

Tell us about your love for athletics—and athletes.

I love lean, muscular, sweaty guys. Sex in locker rooms really turns me on. It probably has a lot to do with my childhood. My parents put me into hockey school when I was very young; by age 7 I was playing a lot of competitive sports. I played hockey the most. It’s a high-contact sport, and my teammates were very close, and there was a lot of sexual tension as we were all hitting puberty together. The locker room had a lot of homoerotic activity. We’d slap each other’s asses, pin someone down and dry-fuck him from behind, or slap our dicks across a guy’s face. We were just joking around but it really turned me on, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one turned on.

Who’s on your sports orgy invite list?

David Beckham. I’m a sucker for hot soccer players and guys with tattoos. He’s got thick thighs, a great ass, and a beautiful face. Andy Roddick is the sexiest tennis player alive. He’s got a cute face and a rock-hard body and abs. Tom Brady is a really sexy, buff football player.

Jockstraps definitely turn me on, but I do have a thing for guys in socks. It depends on the guy and the situation. But if I had to choose, I would pick jockstraps.

Once I was shooting this straight guy, a really hot 22-year-old. And the only way he could get fucked was by watching a home video of him fucking his girlfriend. After a while he started tight-

What’s been your hottest porn experience so far?

I was in love with a guy on my hockey team. We first made out in the locker room. It started out with just the usual locker-room joking around and it escalated into a full-on make-out session. It was the most exciting experience.

Have you ever had sports-related sex?

Which sport should be played naked?

I like my men sweaty. I fucking love the smell of a sweaty jock. And I love jerking off with sweaty, smelly practice shirts.

And they’re more fun to snap. Do you like your men showered or fresh off the field and sweaty?

We photographed you in jocks and socks. Which gear turns you on more?

They wanted real porn stars making their own home videos. You find Manhunt members on the site who want to hook up and do porn, you go shoot them hooking up, and if you think they’re hot, you put your dick in their mouth and if you want to fuck them, you hand the camera to the other model. It’s very amateurish—whatever goes. There really are no rules.

Definitely wrestling. I would love to see hot guys rolling around naked with each other on the floor.

How did your past experience help you with this? Well, I had the connections, first of all, and I had a name and a following, so when I went to launch my website I had quite a bit of publicity online with the blogs and everything. That got me some traffic, and it got people like Manhunt interested in me. It also helped me in dealing with the guys. I try to have a chill set, telling jokes and reassuring them that when I’m taking their picture or video, I’m not judging them or critiquing them.

How often do you find you want to jump in?

I’d say it’s 50-50. If I’m not into them, I probably won’t join in. One time I had this military couple, and we were shooting in Texas. One was conservative and the other wasn’t. I thought they were hot, so I tried to put my dick in one of the guys’ mouths, but the other one didn’t seem too happy about that, so I stopped. You can’t win ’em all.

Wow, so porn stars get rejected too, huh? [Laughs] Yeah, it happens. )+| UNZIPPED | APRIL 2009

ening his ass hole while my dick was inside. I remember going, “Can you do that again?” And he would do it and go, “You mean like that?” in this tone that implied he was loving getting fucked even though he said he wasn’t. I knew he was getting off on it.

Does your family know what you do?

I’ve told my brothers, but not my parents. I think my dad would be OK with it, but it would really upset my mother. It’s hard because I’m constantly having to lie, and I think it hurts our relationship.

What has porn taught you about yourself?

To just be yourself—and to be OK with that, whatever it is. I’ve been in this business for three years, so it kinda goes in cycles. The first year was all glamorous fun. In the second year I started to get resentful and jaded and pissed off about not getting enough attention. Then you get to the place where you just enjoy it and you appreciate that you are in it at all. And that’s where you want to be. If you go into it expecting to be validated somehow, you’ll never be satisfied because you’ll never get that validation. I’m lucky compared to a lot of people. I’ve stripped down naked and had sex in front of the entire world. It’s very liberating.

Are you dating anyone?

Not right now. I actually haven’t since I got into the business. I tried to, but it wasn’t good because I travel so much. Right now I’m just about living life and having fun, traveling around and doing whatever.

Do you have a lot of sex outside of porn?

Not really. I used to, but it kinda goes in waves. I meet guys and sometimes I hook up, but I’m usually not looking for it. I get enough sex through my website.

Do you have a type?

A nice build, athletic, open-minded, honest.

What’s the dirtiest thing you’ve ever done sexually?

Dirty? I’ve eaten out two asses at the same time, but I don’t know if that’s dirty.

Dirtiest thing you want to do? Um, eat out three asses? [Laughs]

What does it take to get you unzipped?

A hot body and a big dick helps. And maybe a little bit of alcohol.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

That I occasionally will fuck a girl, usually twice a year, just to do it. It’s weird, but I get an urge to fuck a girl every once in a while.

That’s actually kind of hot. What advice do you have for someone who’s thinking about doing a shoot for On the Hunt?

Before applying, be sure that you want to do adult video work. It’s not always what you think it’s going to be. And if you do decide to do it, tell all your closest friends. Trust me, they will find out anyway, and you will feel better about it if you tell them. For behind-the-scenes coverage of the Jeremy Hall photo shoot, go to Unzipped.net/JeremyHall. Alternative Prom provides safe space for LGBT youth and allies By: Alex Morse/Guest Correspondent HOLYOKE, MA—On Friday May 29th, nearly 500 young people from throughout Western Massachusetts packed the Holiday Inn in Holyoke in honor of the 3rd Annual Western Massachusetts Youth Pride Prom. Organized by the Holyoke GLBTQ Task Force, the Western Mass Youth Pride Prom creates a safe, fun, and respectful space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied young people. Pride Proms are primarily for LGBT young people, a population often unwelcome at traditional high school proms. Despite the progress that has been made in recent years, LGBT youth continue to be harassed for their sexual orientation and/or gender expression. The Western Mass Youth Pride Prom, and the efforts of the Holyoke GLBTQ Task Force in general, combat forces of oppression such as heterosexism and homophobia by means of education and empowerment. This year's Western Mass Youth Pride Prom achieved an unprecedented level of success. Nearly 500 hundred young people packed the grand ballroom at the Holiday Inn, where they enjoyed music by DJ Hush. Attendees were also provided with food, prom photos, rain-

bow corsages, and performances by local drag performers, dance groups, singers, and musicians. Yet the best part of all was the fact that the prom was free to everyone. Nicholas Duclos, a senior at Holyoke High School and one of two emcees at the Prom chose to skip the Holyoke High School Prom because of its high cost. Said Duclos, "Not only is this event creating a safe and supportive space for LGBT people, but its an affordable alternative for those students who don't have the several hundred dollars necessary to attend proms sponsored by their high school." A member of the Holyoke GLBTQ Task Force, Duclos wants to focus on educating the straight community on how to be allies to LGBT efforts. In addition to the dancing, the Pride Prom also featured a community resource fair with resources and materials. Those organizations distributing information included Tapestry Health Systems, the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club, Pioneer Valley Unity, CareerPoint, Baystate Health Systems, and area religious organizations that affirm LGBT identities. As in past years, the Pride Prom enjoyed the support of Holyoke Mayor Michael Sullivan, who issued a city proclamation declaring Friday May 29th "Youth Pride Day" in Holyoke in honor of the 3rd Annual Western

Mass Youth Pride Prom. Attendees were greeted by the proclamation as they entered the dance hall, all of whom appreciated the mayor's symbolic gesture. Organizers of the Prom were adamant about making this year's Youth Pride Prom as inclusive as possible. Not only did the Task force invite Gay-Straight Alliances and LGBT organizations from across Western Massachusetts, they invited youth groups, schools, and community programs that rarely have a prom experience. LGBT students and their straight allies came not only from schools like Holyoke High and other neighboring school districts, but also from the Holyoke Street School and Westover Job Corps, alternative programs for high-school and college-age young people. The Western Mass Youth Pride Prom provided momentum to the mission of the BAGLY Prom (Boston Alliance for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Youth), an annual LGBT prom at Boston City Hall. The Holyoke GLBTQ Task Force recognized a growing need for youth pride events in Western Mass - citing the lack of transportation and organization for youth to attend events in the Boston area. Since the Western Mass Youth Pride Prom's inception in 2007, it has grown larger each year, with 200 in atten-

dance the first year and around 500 this year. The Western Mass Youth Pride Prom was made possible by aggressive fundraising and the generosity of several local organizations and community agencies. The two biggest donors included BAGLY and Baystate Health Systems, who provided $2000 and $1000 respectively. Other donors included: Oz Creations, Northampton High School Gay Straight Alliance, Smith Vocational High School, Valley Psychiatric Services, Tapestry Health Systems, the Holyoke Health Center, Hampshire College, Holyoke High School Gay Straight Alliance, Hampden Wilbraham High School, Always our Children, and The Rainbow Times. For now, members of the Holyoke GLBTQ Task Force are meeting to evaluate the Prom and thank the Prom sponsors and the more than forty adult chaperones that supervised the event. The group hopes to get an early start in planning next year's Prom and is discussing other possible events, such as a Pride Block Party in downtown Holyoke to occur sometime this summer. To become involved with the Holyoke GLBTQ Task Force or to provide a donation, contact Alex Morse at (413) 210-8208 or by email at alex.b.morse@gmail.com.

The Father of online dating: One-on-one with Manhunt Founder

By: Sebastian Reynolds With more than 2 million members worldwide, Manhunt is the leading gay website in the United States. What began as a local telephone dating service is now worldwide in more than 100 countries. As co-founder and chairman of Manhunt, Jonathan Crutchley is the man behind the blue and orange curtain. We sat with him to discuss how he and business partner Larry Basile first came up with the idea for an online gay dating site; and how in ten short years, Manhunt has changed the way gay men meet other gay men. SR: How did you become the ultimate gay matchmaker? JC: Oh my God, you really mean this? You've got me blushing down to my toenails. Q: Have you always had a knack for matching men? A: The truth is that I have always been a shy and introverted person, especially when I came out as a gay man, which didn't happen until I was 30. Back in the '70's when I was coming out, gay bars and discos were the places to go to meet gay men. If you were a good dancer with a gym body and perfect hair, you made friends, but I was the guy watching all the others from a dark corner of the room. Q: How did you meet men in the 70s? A: It wasn't until the introduction of telephone chat lines, like the ones founded by my business partner Larry Basile in 1987, that I was able to meet more guys and make friends. On the telephone lines you were a just a voice— the rest was unseen, and, until you met someone in person, they were just a fantasy. Fantasy is powerful, and it helped me emerge

from my shell. Later, when I partnered with Larry Basile in the telephone chat lines and, after that, the internet personals business, we perfected the use of fantasy to help men meet each other. Q: Are people surprised to meet the man behind the Manhunt curtain? A: Yes, the real me is not what people imagine. For 25 years I sold real estate and wore sport jackets from Brooks Brothers. You wouldn't find me marching in a Pride Parade with my shirt off, but I'd be watching the parade from the sidelines. Q: What is the secret to Manhunt's success? How did it become the #1 dating website for gay men? A: Larry and I knew that Manhunt's customers are more than just those who live in gay neighborhoods in big cities and who follow the latest trends and fashions. Our market is much larger than that including bears, leather guys, even married and bi-guys— whom we guess could be as many as 30% of Manhunt users. We always knew that gay men were everywhere, and with Manhunt, guys from Nashville, Tennessee to North Dakota can find each other. There is much more to gay life than Chelsea in New York City or the Castro or West Hollywood. We developed a site that was easy for the average guy to use and we emphasized our 24-hour a day Customer Service to help guys use the site and be comfortable with it and with themselves. Q: How has gay dating changed since the site began ten years ago? What were men looking for then? What are men looking for now? A: Guys have always been looking for the

same things. The internet makes it much easier to find exactly what you want. Q: How does Manhunt feel about eHarmony and Match.com targeting the gay community? A: Straight dating sites just don't get it as far was what J ONATHAN CRUTCHLEY gay men are looking for. Have you Photo by: Peter Urban ever filled out one of their questionnaires that ask "do you want children" or "what is your income?" These are questions that women want to know about men as possible marriage partners. Gay men want to know what other men look like and how big it is. Q: Since the latest Craigslist murder in Boston, many have questioned the safety of meeting people on the internet. How safe is Manhunt? A: I'm not supposed to say this, but meeting a stranger on Manhunt can be just as dangerous as meeting a stranger on Craigslist or in a bar or in a dark alley. We tell guys to be careful and meet first in a public place, but men will do what they want. The internet can be dangerous. Q: Is it Manhunt's responsibility to protect its members from online predators? A: We urge Manhunt members to take respon-

sible precautions about meeting any stranger, but it is difficult if not impossible to prevent bad things from happening. If a criminal action does take place, such as a robbery or assault, local police can obtain information through a court-ordered subpoena or search warrant for information that may be in our data base that may help them prosecute. Q: Manhunt will be introducing its new version later this year. How will the new Manhunt be different than classic Manhunt? A: Manhunt's new version is being rolled out as we speak in Australia and South America. Our current version is at capacity, so, when too many guys are on line at once, the site will crash. The new version accommodates many more users, but it will look different and take getting used to. Our Australian and Latin American users didn't like the new version at first because of the differences, but when they got used to it, and when we got all the bugs out of the system, everyone now seems fairly happy. Q: Is mobile the next big wave for meeting men? A: Depends on what country you're in. In Japan cell phones outnumber computers, so you have to have a cell phone application and most people will use it. Mobile applications are taking longer to get adopted in the U. S., but they are catching on with young people first. Yes, the future is mobile. Manhunt has a mobile application and we're updating it. Q: How will men meet other men in 2020? A: I'll send you a text message from Heaven and let you know. For more information visit Manhunt.net.

The Hunt Continues SUMMER IS MAN SEASON! Manhunt.net stirs summer craze by expanding brand By Dale Weimer It’s duck season. It’s wabbit season. Duck season. Wabbit season! Sorry Loony folks, you’re both w’ong. Log on to Manhunt.net, and you’ll know what season it is. It’s MAN season. The popularity of America’s leading gay hook up site continues to soar. Membership is higher than ever, with over 450,000 paying members. In fact, according to Hitwise, the company that ranks on-line sites, Manhunt.net is the second most popular gay website in the country – surpassing PlanetOut.com and Out.com. The only gay site that scores more visitors is Gay.com and Manhunt.net is expected to pass them soon. “It’s an incredible phenomenon,” remarks Phil Henricks, Marketing Director at Manhunt.net. “What started as a small local phone line in Boston has grown into a multi-national conglomerate. After becoming the leading gay meeting site in the US and Canada, Manhunt.net expanded into the UK and Australia two years ago. Now we’re in practically every country in Europe, South America, and Asia.” What next? Manhunt.net in Zimbabwe? Of course, not everyone is so gleeful about the site’s growth. In addition to its online competitors, the nation’s gay nightlife industry – the bars and clubs – blame the site for dwindling business. Gay men used to go out of their homes to hunt other gay men. Now, more and more men prefer to meet guys online. “The online hook-up sites have made it harder for the brick and mortar bars,” confirms Greg Jones of New York City’s popular gay sports bar, Splash. “We’ve had to step up our game and add incentives for guys to leave their homes.” The club has found success by hosting theme nights. Most recently, Splash presented the official Madonna “Confessions Tour” after-party with the material girl’s gal pal DJ, Tracy Young. “It was a great night. The line was two city blocks long. When we offer our patrons things the websites can’t, they come.” Manhunt, too, is stepping up their game. “We’re on top now,” continues Henricks. “Our goal is to remain there.” They’re focus is on brand extension.

“Manhunt is the gay Disney,” says Len Evans, a partner at Project Publicity, the firm that handles Manhunt’s media. “The site has become so ingratiated in the gay community, the Manhunt brand is now a powerful entity both online and off.” Evans points to Manhunt: The Movie. A joint venture between Manhunt.net and Hot House Video, the film was last year’s hottest adult title.

Not surprisingly, the release of its sequel, Manhunt 2.0, was announced

last week. What makes the Manhunt films unique is the level of co-branding, a first for any such movie in porn history. “It’s a classic trick in the modern marketing space to take two big brands such as Manhunt and Hot House and bring them together for one big bang,” said Brent Smith, the Creative Director of Hot House. “Box colors were culled from the actual site to preserve the integrity of the Manhunt brand identity.” “We are beyond pleased with the exposure we received from the first film and look forward to a long running relationship with Hot House,” said Henricks. It is in no means a monogamous relationship, however. Manhunt.net is presently in bed with multiple branding opportunities. Last year, the site launched the nationwide Manhunt Club Tour with DJ Bill Bennett. Many clubs refused to allow the tour in their venue but those that did were rewarded. The show packed crowds in, breaking club capacity records in many of the tour cities. Earlier this year, the site went mobile with Manhunt.Mobile.com and in June, it went Hollywood. Manhunt was prominently featured in the summer’s hilarious independent film, “Another Gay Movie”. “Product placement is big business in mainstream films. We’re carrying the concept over to independent gay films,” said Henicks. Next up, Manhunt.net will release their first soundtrack cd. Also in the works for 2007 is – hold on to your seats for this one - “Manhunt: The Musical”. “There’s really no limit to the branding possibilities of Manhunt.net,” adds Evans.

“The company is

extremely receptive to all opportunities, so we welcome all ideas from potential partners.” Manhunt 2.0 is available in stores now. The original film, Manhunt. The Movie also remains in stores. Both films come with a coupon good for a one-month free membership on Manhunt.net.

OH. MY. GOD. LANCE BASS IS GAY If any member of ’N SYNC was going to come out, It’s Gonna Be Me, said LANCE BASS in People magazine. Coming as not the biggest surprise in pop culture recently, Bass said he’s in a "very stable" relationship with trophy boyfriend, REICHEN LEMKUHL a winner of Season Four of The Amazing Race. Bass also said he didn’t want to come out earlier for fear of it affecting the group’s popularity. ``I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything,'' he tells the magazine. Meanwhile, Bass and fellow ’N Sync-er JOEY FATONE remain committed to a sitcom pilot inspired by The Odd Couple. The only difference in the one is that the "Felix" character is, in fact, gay. ‘AMAZING’ – AND NOT CHIP OR REICHEN Trying very hard to leave the stench of THE FAMILY EDITION behind, CBS’s THE AMAZING RACE returns this fall with a new itinerary – and a gay couple. TOM ROCK, 39, and TERRY COSENTINO, 45, will represent homos everywhere as they travel around the world. Where are they from? Why that Gay No-Man’s Land known as NEW YORK CITY. They’ll compete against an Indian-American couple, two Muslims, a pair featuring a woman with an artificial leg, and two male models. But they’re not the only ones from "our team" among the Race teams. Openly lesbian speech and language pathologist LAUREN MARCOCCIO will venture the world with her father, tour company owner DUKE MARCOCCIO, of Warwick, R.I. CBS acknowledged the tenuous relationship between the two in a press statement: "When Lauren told her family she was gay, her father didn't react well to the news, and the two were estranged for several years. They are currently building their relationship and hope the Race will help them recapture the closeness they once shared." There’s nothing like recapturing that closeness with the television cameras filming your every move.

The Amazing Race will be seen this fall at 8 p.m. on Sundays. SOMETHING FOR PAUL Though the inaugural Aida’s Big Phat Florida Film Festival may have left some hoping for greater attendance, the awards ceremony found filmmakers Jason Piekarski and MICHAEL WANZIE walk away big winners. Their production of PAUL WEGMAN: A TRIBUTE was recognized by both audience voters as well as the festival jury, winning two awards for BEST DOCUMENTARY. In his acceptance remarks Wanzie said, "When your subject is a person as spectacular as Paul Wegman – who touched so many lives in so many ways – it’s not surprising that even after death, he would continue to touch people through a film. This award is for Paul!" O, THE STORIES THEY COULD HAVE TOLD Clearly having run out of topics, O, THE OPRAH MAGAZINE has offered this detail about the daytime diva who isn’t BARBARA WALTERS: Oprah, it seems, is not gay. Neither is her friend, GAYLE KING. "I understand why people think we’re gay," Oprah tells O, the Oprah Magazine in what must have been a difficult interview "get." "There isn’t a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it – how can you be this close without it being sexual?"

We’re resisting the chance to note that STEADMAN GRAHAM wasn’t interviewed for the story. However, we gratuitously acknowledge that King is an editor with O, the Oprah Magazine. King, who was possibly quoting herself for the story, said that "The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you because there’s nothing wrong with being gay." Winfrey couldn’t resist Oprah-dizing the situation: "Something about this relationship feels otherworldly to me, like it was designed by a power and a hand greater than my own." My, my, how we miss ROSIE, THE MAGAZINE. THOROUGHLY MODERN MANHUNTING If they can base musicals on the Four Seasons, singing kitties and a reality TV show (there’s an Apprentice musical is in the works), then what’s so odd about one based on one of the leading online M2M hookup Web sites?

MANHUNT: THE MUSICAL is currently in the works for 2007 and is part of the ever-evolving brand of Manhunt.com. The website has spawned a nationwide club tour and two adult porn videos; the latest, MANHUNT 2.0 has just been released by Hot House Video. If the musical is anything like the pornos, it will feature the truelife adventures of some of the hottest encounters by Manhunt.net users. And as far as what the musical’s climax will be, well, we’ll let you write that punchline yourself. WHAT’S IN A NAME? This isn’t as hard as it seems, on Sept. 6, Six Flags at Jackson, N.J., will be the site of its GAY DAYS 2006. To make it a bit confusing, that Six Flags’ waterpark, Hurricane Harbor, was the spot for the recent all-gay evening party. The party’s name? WATERMARK.

ICANT By JAIME LUTZ

You can find a lot of porn on the internet. You can access the internet on the iPhone and the iPad. Ergo: You can watch porn on your iPhone. But the Apple corporation doesn't want you to. In an April email exchange between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and a disgruntled customer that was published on TechCrunch.com, Jobs wrote that his company does "believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone," adding, "Folks who want porn can buy and [sic] Android phone." Apple's refused applications that don't jibe with this moral responsibility, a policy that's frustrating to Jonathan Crutchley, co-founder of Online Buddies, a Cambridge-based company that publishes Manhunt.net. "It's not just anti-porn, it's anti-free speech," says Crutchley. Manhunt is used by 2 million active members to cruise for gay sex (the slogan is "Cruise. Chat. Connect."), and men often show explicit pictures of themselves on the site. "Gay men like to see skin," Crutchley explains. Online Buddies had already made forays into Apple's apps with their website, DList.com—similar to Manhunt, but aimed at younger men. "It took a couple of tries to get [the DList app] approved by Apple," Crutchley says. "We had to edit a lot of pictures. ... Guys post a picture of themselves with their shirts off, but you can only show 2 inches of skin below the belly button. And so we had pictures rejected because it was, maybe, 3 inches below the belly button. We were splitting hairs here."

To avoid this headache, Manhunt's developing a web application accessible over the iPhone's Safari browser instead of through the iTunes app store. There, Crutchley says, "you can see all the skin you want." The site is in beta testing mode at gps.manhunt.net, and known internally as "Assfinder." This approach is becoming increasingly common as more applications have gotten the boot. Gay New York's application was rejected for a negative portrayal of Sarah Palin (Apple also doesn't allow apps that defame public figures), a man with his shirt off and a Michelangelo-style picture of a penis. Some apps showing women in bikinis have been banned (although others, like the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, remain). Apple didn't respond to the Dig's repeated requests for comment. "Apple is a global company, and other cultures have different sensibilities. The rules against political satire and graphic content are designed to protect Apple's ability to operate overseas," says Paul Niwa, a journalism professor at Emerson College who's "optimistic" that Apple will give up its content restrictions eventually. "The ability to be creative and think independently is a prized human quality. Any company or government that tries to control expression will eventually be on the losing side."

Manhunt.net, everyone's favorite pick-up site, recently announced its first-ever world tour. You heard it right, the party is about to extend beyond the computer to the world's biggest clubs! To the surprise of many in the circuit community, the relative unknown DJ Bill Bennett was given the plum headlining gig which means he won't be unknown for much longer. A lot of top-named DJs were vying for the Manhunt tour. Congratulations on scoring the year's top gig! Thanks! I didn't know about the other DJs that Manhunt was considering until after the deal was signed. I've been the Susan Lucci of circuit parties always coming close but then losing out to the big boys. It was nice to win this time. Why did you choose Chicago as the first stop for the world Manhunt tour? Ron and Chuck from IML and the leather community have been so supportive of me over the years there was never even a question of where to kick this tour off. So, you're a leather guy? I own leather and nothing gets me going more than a sweaty handsome man in leather. That said, don't even think about using duct tape on me! Who would you want in your sling? I like an athletic, slightly hairy and handsome guy. I would be in the sling. Oh really? And don't kiss me and whisper sweet nothings in my ear. You need to smack my ass and spit on me. Now you're talking! What can we expect from the Manhunt party? We are bringing in over $15,000 worth of visuals. In fact, for the first hour, my music goes in sync with the visuals. I'm bringing a hard core rock/electronica sound. My manager describes it as a "Bend you over and fuck without lube" sound. The Manhunt Tour will be traveling to thirty US and Canadian cities before moving on to Europe, Japan, Mexico and Australia. Catch it when it comes to Chicago, Sunday, May 29th at the House of Blues. The evolution of online dating

Straight people finding love on the Internet can thank gay men

By RYAN LEE

Friday, November 03, 2006

Tossed out by many who received them, those America Online CDs that maintained a ubiquitous presence in mailboxes across the country in the 1990s helped dramatically alter gay culture, particularly the way people find romantic or sexual partners. For almost a generation now, an increasing number of gay and lesbian youth have taken their first steps into the enigmatic “gay community” by passing through an online chat room door. What often awaits them is an oasis of images and personal ads, where Mr. Right or Ms. Tonight is one click away. “Online is the way we meet people these days,” says Dave Singleton, author of “The MANdates: 25 Real Rules for Successful Gay Dating.” “If you are not an openly gay man, or you don’t live in one of the major urban areas, [the Internet has] opened up so many avenues,” he says. Once looked upon by mainstream society with the same chagrin as newspaper personals — something for desperate people who are too socially awkward to meet partners in person — online dating is now mainstream enough to be featured regularly in dinnertime TV ads. On Craig’s List, which is not a specifically gay site, the men-seeking-men personal ads are the most active dating category and show the greatest growth rate, according to founder Craig Newmark.

“Even my mom has a Match.com profile now,” says 25-year-old Ryan Norbauer, who recently launched Lovetastic.com, an online dating site for gay men looking for more than a casual hook-up. Growing up in West Virginia, Norbauer says he routinely logged online after school to talk with friends before branching out into gay chat rooms. “Online dating was the absolute first thing I tried,” Norbauer says. “It makes more sense for gay men … because of the inherent challenges of meeting other gay men in the real world.”

For gay men who didn’t come of age alongside the Internet, any reluctance to using online dating sites faded after one or two hook-ups, says David Kooy, 49, Norbauer’s business partner at Lovetastic.com. “What broke down the wall of resistance to online personals was that they worked,” Kooy says. “People actually got to meet people and it was a viable alternative to meeting people in bars.”

Online pioneers KOOY FIRST ENTERED A GAY CHAT room in the mid-‘90s as “Missieboy.” “I remember going on to chat rooms in AOL in ’95 or something like that and thinking it was the biggest hoot you could think of,” says Kooy, who describes the chat room banter as random gay people making random statements while “fostering a sense of community.” Even before AOL chat rooms, gay men were using their computers to meet each other. Subscriber-based Bulletin Board Services with names like “28 Barbary Lane,” “Hotlanta Chat” and “OUTline” — void of stimulating images or graphics — were the precursors to the AOL chat rooms that exploded in the ‘90s. “A lot of [the online dating phenomenon] sprung out of the AOL chat rooms,” says Phil Henricks, marketing director for Manhunt.net. “We all know gay men were the first big users of the AOL chat rooms, but … AOL embraced the gay dollar, but not gay sensibilities.” Dissatisfaction with censorship and other issues with AOL created fertile cyber soil from which many gayspecific dating sites sprouted. Among the early queer-centric web domains was Gay.com. Mark Elderkin created it in 1994 initially as a personal web page featuring pictures of his dog. Gay.com quickly grew into the preeminent online meeting place for gay and lesbian Internet users. It was so successful that it merged with competitor PlanetOut and became a public company trading on the Nasdaq National Market in 2004. “[The company’s success] is largely fueled by the membership growth on Gay.com,” says Anne Moellering, vice president for marketing at PlanetOut. “The product on Gay.com is the most solid [branch of the company], and we have a solid and loyal membership base.” Gay.com features more than 10 million user profiles, and more than 30,000 people are chatting at any given moment, Moellering says. “It has always been looked upon as a blessing for the gay community more than a taboo,” Moellering says of online dating. “It’s been a lifesaver for lots and lots of people in certain areas of the country — at least it’s been a datesaver.” But while Gay.com and other hook-up sites increase access to potential partners, they far from guarantee dating bliss, Singleton notes. “Expanded choice does not in and of itself make anything better,” says Singleton, who also writes dating columns for MSN and Match.com. “It may make meeting people easier — it doesn’t necessarily make dating better.”

More than sex NORBAUER EXPERIENCED FIRST-HAND how unfulfilling trying to meet guys online can be, which is what inspired him to create Lovetastic.com. “It really grew out of my dissatisfaction with the range of options within the gay personals realm,” says Norbauer, who described many gay-themed sites as having an “atmosphere focused on passing sexual encounters.”

Filling in boxes about the size of his body parts and preferred sexual positions did not align with Norbauer’s concept of finding a partner. “My initial visceral reaction to those things wasn’t out of prudishness, but because all the things I am as a person, and what I have to offer, were not satisfied with those options,” he says, adding that the Internet’s growth has coincided with “a substantial evolution of the way gay people think of themselves and the possibility of love.” Launched last month, Lovetastic.com is probably the only gay online dating site where users can’t post a topless picture, Norbauer says. “Interactions among gay men can be a little different; they can be a little more high-level and substantial,” he says. “You need only to craft a site that encourages that depth of spirit, and mind, and soul to come out in a profile.” Instead of knocking traditional gay hook-up sites, the folks behind Lovetastic.com say they want to add to the options gay men have online. “It’s an entirely legitimate thing to want what [hook-up sites] have, but if you want to express a nuanced vision of yourself, you need the proper framework to do it,” Kooy says. LESBIAN CHAT ROOMS ARE STILL gaining popularity, and although some users post hardcore ads looking for a hook-up, it’s “nowhere near the scale the guys rooms are,” Moellering says. PlanetOut is preparing to launch a Sappho-centric website in December after much clamoring, Moellering says. “People are frustrated, and totally understandably, that the experience doesn’t give as much as its supposed to for women,” she asserts. Gay social networking sites like Manhunt, Adam4Adam and the recently launched DList, for “edgy gay men,” provide just as easy an opportunity for men to find a coffee date as a gangbang, Henricks says. “We’re still very much a hook-up site, but there’s a lot of people who use it to catch up with friends, or as an innocent flirtation device,” he says. “Sometimes it’s a mindless way to break-up the monotony of the day.” And as hook-up sites morph into broader community hangouts, the rules of dating get murkier, Singleton says. “For example, if you’re dating somebody, when do you take your profile down?” he asks.

HEALTHCHRISTOPHER JOHN TREACY November 23, 2005

Manhunt for health MAJOR GAY MALE CONNECTION WEB SITE ADDRESSES HEALTH CONCERNS BY PARTNERING WITH NEARLY 100 HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS, CREATING A HELP CENTER, OTHER INITIATIVES Some men feel that Manhunt is a great gift to the gay community, while others stand firm that it's a breeding ground for unhealthy attitudes and behavior. Either way, the site is doing everything it can - short of policing its members - to create an environment that promotes the concept of healthy living. Offering educational options and services for guys who aren't sure just what "the right thing" might be is the goal. Talking with Manhunt General Manager Stephan Adelson, it's never been more apparent how committed the site is to creating the healthiest socio-sexual environment possible. "Back in 2002, we were approached by a community-based organization that wanted to post outreach-oriented ads on the site. I felt then, as I still do now, that it was the right thing to do. Members began asking questions about safer sex, and overall, the response was very good." Since then Adelson says there's been an impressive total of 91 health-related organizations that have appeared on Manhunt, either with their own, freely provided, ads placed among those of the members, or as a banner running on the log on/log off screens. The key has been to let the ads attract members; any organizational groups allowed onto the site have been clearly instructed not to contact members, but rather to let them come forward of their own volition. "We're promoting the idea that choices can be made on factual information - but that only works if someone is providing those facts. It's the notion of choice that keeps this scenario balanced - nobody can tell another member how or how not to behave, but I feel it's important to help them make better educated decisions." Additionally, Adelson points out that efforts have been made to expand a member's options of how to describe themselves - to help ward off unwanted exposure to various environments. "Manhunt is not only just a business - it's a reflection or snapshot of what's going on in the gay community. As a result, we need to accept reality and present ourselves accordingly. I decided to add the 'no pnp' option ['pnp' stands for the phrase 'party and play' which alludes to drug use], because there's no way to effectively stop the way that drug use is tied in to the pursuit of sex - we cannot scrutinize our subscribers. But we can give them the option to say 'no' right up front. Likewise, we've created the help center ÂŚ with community resources in every area of the country for information about HIV, other STDs, addiction and recovery, support groups - even sexual special interest groups that, on some level, promote healthy relations." Adelson goes on to explain that over time, Manhunt has developed a sense of community that transcends its status as a mere hookup site. Members are invited to take surveys that foster research to their mutual benefit, they're offered participation in clinical research studies and trials and can gather information about crisis assistance. Manhunt even helped some worried folks locate one another during Katrina. The last piece of the puzzle is a service called Partner Notification. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having tested positive for an STD, Manhunt is kind enough to assist you in spreading the word of warning to your partners - in a private and confidential manner. As part of a signed agreement with Fenway Community Health Center, Manhunt provides a free profile for the Mass Department of Health's STD Division. "Once the infected person is tested and interviewed by the clinic or doctor, and it's determined that they met and exposed men on Manhunt to an STD, the Mass Department of Health offers to send those potentially infected an e-mail from the profile DivofSTDMA on the individual's behalf," says Adelson. "No specific personal information about either party is ever exchanged with anyone. In the e-mail they are given a confidential phone number to call, and they can also simply reply to the e-mail. Since Manhunt is not an organization of bona fide health care professionals, and also to pro tect member's privacy, we don't get involved in members' personal health. We simply provide the free space for the professionals to do their work." As a sidebar to Partner Notification and the Fenway liaison, a survey is also being conducted to determine the best way to effectively motivate someone to get tested when they may have been exposed to an STD.

By and large, Adelson has made a habit of attending meetings and conferences to remain on the cutting edge of gay men's health. The summer before this past, he went to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) conference, "Strategies to Address Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV Transmission Among MSM." This time last year he was at the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) 8th Annual Meeting. Then in December he showed up for the 14th Annual Texas HIV/STD Conference. This year he's made himself available for a handful of like-minded events, including the recent CMA Conference in Provincetown. •

IN MENTIONABLES A 'BROKEBACK' UPDATE

Well, now it seems like only a matter of days before gay cowboy flick "Brokeback Mountain" will be hitting nearby screens, and buzz about the film is hitting a pitch This week, director Ang Lee told the Honolulu Star Bulletin that "It's really just a great American love story. I do not feel so courageous for doing it. Maybe it seems like it would take some courage, but once you're involved in it and read it and believe in it, once you get in that zone, it's a lovely, very benign love story, a sad, tragic, poignant, realistic western. The film is about feelings of love and loneliness that anyone can relate to. If you open yourself to the story, you will discover that it's not provocative, or a comedy or a parody or 'Blazing Saddles.' I think some will say how dare us to be serious about this." Not us. Dec. 9. It's about privacy ÂŚ and convenience If you're a gay man in New England and you contend that you've never heard of or utilized Manhunt.net, you're lying. Plain and simple. And, the system that began as a telephone hook-up service in the '80s is getting back to its roots - sorta. It seems that the Cambridge, Mass.-based hook-up site for guys has determined that sitting at home in front of ones computer with some 2,000 guys for the taking isn't private enough for its customers. That's why they've launched a so-called mobile site, mobile.manhunt.com, Now, no need for a keyboard anymore, a keypad and a decent wireless connection will do. "We began developing Mobile.Manhunt.net early last year," explains Phil Henricks, Marketing Director for On-Line Buddies, Inc., the parent company of Manhunt.net and Mobile.Manhunt.net. "We took our time with the mobile version of the site because it was imperative that it matched the superior quality of the on-line site. We tested an initial version in the New York area and have now

begun to roll it out nationwide and in Canada. Over 2,000 Manhunt.net members have already tried it. Members have commented that they enjoy the privacy and increased convenience of meeting men on cell phones rather than on their home computers." He continues to note that members "Love how easy to use and [how] functional it is." Really? Forgive me for being skeptical, but I certainly can't think of anything less private than being in a public space, perusing nude photos on the less than one square inch grainy screen of my mobile Motorolla and then trying like hell to send a text message to a potential "friend." Hell, it takes me 15 minutes to eke out a message that I'm running 10 minutes late for dinner. I, of course, am a pessimist, though, and steadfastly resist any new technology. I'll give it to them, though. Manhunt does have the corner on this market. After all, they have grown steadily as a phone line dating service (that still exists today,) and into a virtual gay microcosm that reaches all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and most recently, Japan and Brazil. And, says Henricks, the site has over 450,000 members and adds about 10,000 new members every week. "It is primarily geared to facilitate hook ups," says Henricks. "But is also a place where great friendships and serious relationships have begun." If your phone is the size of a small TV and you have a penchant for hooking (or just looking for some close, life-long friends) on the fly then this could be for you. Members can read and send messages to other members, view their full buddy list, browse online profiles from their own state, and lock and unlock photos. Also a boon for travelers, the new service will soon make it possible for members to change their location to view profiles from other states.

of the action while getting more turned on by the minute. He reaches out and taps the cocksucker, who turns to wrap his lips around Hall’s uncut monster of a dick. Setting the camera down on a nearby table, Hall grabs the cocksucker by the back of the head and proceeds to face-fuck him while the other guy rolls on a condom and slides his pole into the cocksucker’s ass. Before long, everybody is blowing their loads, and Hall, smiling, turns the camera off. “That’s

a wrap,” he says with a laugh. That’s Hall’s MO these days. As part of his directing gig for Manhunt.net’s new site, OnTheHunt.com, the popular adult performer is not only guiding regular Joes in their triple-X debuts, he’s getting in on the action. The unique combination of amateur models and recognizable porn stars has prompted nearly 4,000 Manhunt members to apply for their own shot at Internet stardom—and a chance to finally hook up with that Manhunt member they’ve had on their buddy list for months. “I think people are ready for something different than the standard, glossy porn where everything goes perfectly,” says OTH webmaster Gary Blumenthal. “The site is not faux amateur; it really, truly is amateur content. The sex is genuine and we film it in real time; we never say, ‘Cut.’ We film the scene all the way through, whether it’s 25 minutes or an hour and 25 minutes. People see the breaks in action, where the bottom says he needs a minute and it takes two or three tries before he can take the other guy’s dick. And then the porn star director steps in if he wants. It’s real sex with a twist.” The idea came to Blumenthal after seeing a video posted on XTube. “I found this clip of these two guys having sex, and one of them was getting fucked while he was typing [a message to someone else] on Manhunt,” he recalls. “So I thought, What if there was a site devoted to showing real amateur guys hooking up?” Blumenthal, who at the time happened to be interviewing with Manhunt for the webmaster position, pitched the idea to the company and was given the go-ahead, with one stipulation: All the guys had to be Manhunt members. “All of the guys are

either guys who have either hooked up before, have wanted to hook up, or were paired up through our pairing-up process,” says Blumenthal. To up the “hot” quotient, Blumenthal brought in the star element. “We were concerned that guys might feel uncomfortable about a film crew coming to their house. So we decided to use porn FE K?< ?LEK<IJ stars to make them feel more com><K :CFJ<%%% fortable and even jump in if need be.” Blumenthal contacted performers like Hall, Matthew Rush, Trevor Knight, Arpad Miklos, Collin O’Neal, and Caesar to act as celebrity directors. To his delight, most jumped at the chance. “It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Caesar says. “Manhunt is an extremely successful business, and I want to learn as much as I can and experience producing and directing scenes. I’ve really enjoyed working with the models and doing all the groundwork it takes to get a scene organized. My background as a model definitely helps when dealing with the models. I understand the stress and pressure that can come with being in front of the camera for the first time.” Indeed, the “fly on the wall” factor is what attracted Matthew Rush. “I loved the concept,” he says. “It’s very voyeuristic, plus you get to see another side of some of your favorite porn stars. It was a nice break from being in front of the camera.” For his part, Trevor Knight saw the site as an opportunity to do something a little altruistic: “I wanted to get involved because I think sex is important to people, and I wanted to bring that to them from my point of view.” The directors were given a single mandate: Get the scene, APRIL 2009 | UNZIPPED |*(

I WAS SUPPOSED TO SHOOT A SOLO SCENE, BUT HE WAS INTO ME AND I WAS INTO HIM,

no matter what it takes. “I never told any of the porn stars that they’re required to jump in,” Blumenthal notes. “I told them it was all about scene integrity. It was like, ‘If you feel the action has stalled, maybe you could take your shirt off, maybe you

You could do whatever is necessary to get the scene.’ And I think that sort of snowballed a little bit.” Indeed, most of the stars have engaged in some way with the models, though Hall appears to be the most comfortable with hands-on participation. “I think with Jeremy, it’s just his own libido,” Blumenthal muses. “He saw this hot sex taking place and he really wanted to jump in. Of course, we aren’t arguing.” While some of the directors go to extremes to remain professionally detached—“It’s very hard for me to shoot sex and not jump in, so sometimes I go into the bathroom and jerk off before a scene just so I can focus on the directing,” Knight says—others relish the opportunity to participate. “I want to jump in almost every time,” proclaims Miklos. “So far, it’s happened just the once.” *)| UNZIPPED | APRIL 2009

Manhunt,” Rush says. “A few times I had to beat off after a scene was over. One time I was in Austin shooting for On The Hunt and they flew in Austin Wilde to have sex with a couple of Manhunt guys. This guy is the Vin Diesel of porn, in my opinion. He has stunning good looks, and his personality is off the charts. I was really getting excited filming him. I would have jumped in in a heartbeat if I could have.” Hall has similarly salacious stories to share. “I was supposed to shoot this really hot guy for a solo scene, but he was so hot, my dick got rock-hard,” he recalls. “I don’t know what happened, but he was into me and I was into him, so I just put the camera on the night stand and fucked him. It went on for half an hour. We both took turns holding the camera, and we both blew really big loads. It was incredibly hot, and it’s all on tape.”

SO I JU

IM,

SO I JUST PUT THE CAMERA ON THE NIGHT STAND AND FUCKED HIM. IT’S ALL ON TAPE.

It’s that kind of spontaneity that has made On The Hunt an exciting new presence online. “I just love it when a model says [to the director], ‘Can I suck your cock while I’m getting fucked?’ It’s so hot because it’s so unpredictable,” Blumenthal enthuses. For Miklos, the experience gave him a chance to think like a director and like a fan. “I paid much more attention to the details than I would have as a performer,” he states. “Having been in front of the camera myself provided me with a certain sense of what is important to shoot—distance, angle, lighting, shadows, et cetera. I know how cameramen play with the circumstances to make the shoot the best, so I tried to do the same. And I tried to see it all through the glasses of people who will be watching these clips.” Blumenthal is concerned with those fans as well. “On The Hunt is porn that gay guys can really relate to,” he posits. “It’s not about giving a straight guy as much money as we can to suck a dick; it’s about guys who love to suck dick

anyway. And because we’re looking for a broad representation of Manhunt’s vast member base, we’re always striving for combinations that [are outside the norm of porn], 8IG8; D@BCFJ# to more accurately ?<I< 8E; 89FM<# represent the kinds C<8;J 8 GIF$ of sex gay men are 8D A8D% actually having. It’s like saying, ‘Let’s get a really hairy guy and put him with a black bodybuilder.’ “I think for a long time porn has not been relatable; all we see are these sculpted muscle men having sex with each other, and that’s not real. This way we’re making everyone feel like a porn star, and I think that’s something that gay men can enjoy and feel good about. I think there is definitely room for change.” APRIL 2009 | UNZIPPED |**

¿Entonces cómo llegabas a conocer chicos? Chat is back. But it's not the AOL chat rooms of the late nineties. AOL inspired, for sure, but with an important technological advancement: video! Welcome to The Jetson's era of chat. After ten years from its initial launch on AOL, the chat craze emerged again this spring with the introduction of ChatRoulette.com, a popular website that puts users face to face with strangers via video. Users go on in front of their web cams to talk and IM with strangers from all over the world. There's no log in, there's no registration. Press play and you are instantly connected with a stranger. Chatters can see each other live and even talk on an open mike. The site says you must be 16 and wear clothes, but there's no registration and no way to verify a users age. During testing, we met 18-year-old girls from Holland and some grunge rockers from the UK and a middle-aged man from Spain, holding a plunger. We guessed he was a plumber but were afraid to ask. Young adults are often intrigued at the idea of meeting people from around the world. Some even claim to have met celebrities. "I swear I saw a Jonas brother," said Kevin Turner, 25, from Washington DC. "My friend chatted with Ashton Kutcher." A number of spinoffs have followed suit, including a gay version called GayRoulette.com. However, the gay version has proved disappointing to users.

With ChatRoulette.com's raunch factor being pretty high, we expected GayRoulette.com would take

it to new levels of inequity. Sadly, it's quite the opposite. Every person we encountered was fully clothed, and actually looked bored to be on the site. Additionally, the site was not able to maintain its traffic. We frequently received a notice stating: "All users are currently engaged in sessions. Hit NEXT to try again." Worse than that, not one person on GayRoulette.com was remotely attractive. Leave it to the gang at Manhunt.com to offer a better alternative. After initial testing in Boston and New York, Manhunt Chat launched nationwide earlier this month on Manhunt.com. With high-quality video, oversized pictures and the most men online, Manhunt Chat is already touting itself as the best way to meet other gay guys in real time. On Manhunt Chat, guys can join rooms of local guys, or join one of the special interest rooms where men are video chatting on a wide range of topics from leather, jocks, and even feet. If you're looking for raunch - as we were- you are in the right place! It's like entering your own personal bath house. The most popular feature that all the men on the site seem to be using is the multiple chat function. It enables guys to view several cams at the same time. During testing, we watched five men on five different screens pleasuring themselves at the same time! There are cleaner rooms for less-adventurous guys but they didn't seem as active during testing. It's a new frontier in chat and just like it was in the old west, it's pretty wild.

MANHUNT is the leading website for men looking to meet other men. With over 4,000,000 profiles, and over 40,000 men joining each week MANHUNT is the place to Get On and Get Off. MANHUNT was launched in 1989 as a telephone dating service for gay men. As men started using the Internet to connect, founders and owners, Jonathan Crutchley and Larry Basile, took the MANHUNT brand online in 2001. Today, MANHUNT is online in over 120 countries around the world, and is offered in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese and German. There’s something for everyone on today’s MANHUNT: muscle boys, twinks, leather daddies, club kids… at any one time, over 60,000 men can be found cruising the site. This past year has seen the introduction of exciting new features including MANHUNT Mobile, Mancam™ video chat, the MANHUNTDaily.com news blog, and even an online health center, MANHUNT Cares. Last month, MANHUNT announced it will revamp the site with a brand new version expected to launch this summer. MANHUNT has emerged as a force offline as well. Last summer, the site celebrated its seventh year with the “7 Sexy Sins” national club tour, a celebration of sexual deviance that starred many of today’s biggest stars in gay porn. This summer, they’ll take to the road again with the “MANHUNT Road Trip” national club tour. Even in this tough economic climate, MANHUNT has proven itself recession-proof. Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be when for the price of a $10 drink, you can get a month of MANHUNT. For the cash-strapped cruiser, it simply makes good economic sense.
