10 THINGS

It’s a GAY Thing

10 things only gay guys really understand

Porn Site Defaults

When XTube and Porn Hub just assume you’re straight and show you things that are a total boner kill.

Straight Girls in Gay Bars

We love our gal pals. So much. And sometimes, well, sometimes boys want to be with only boys for… boy stuff. Just do.

Endless Grindr Banter

When you are like, so right now, and he’s like so wanting to get to know each other, and you’re like… ugh.

Headless Torsos

When guys refuse to share a face pic, and you can’t tell if you’re being catfished by the nicest D you’ve ever seen.

Super Bowl Halftime Divas

Maybe the game is exciting, maybe the ads are good, but when the biggest pop stars hit that stage, you jump up. 8 theQatl.com

That’s

so gay!

Straight Go-Go Dancers

Everybody has to make a living, and it’s nice that they’re cool, but this can be cruel and unusual punishment.

‘So Gay’ Double Standard

When we say it, we say it with authority. When we hear straight people say it, they’re being rude and offensive.

The Phrase ‘PrEP Whore’

It’s not funny. In fact, you’re uninformed at best, an awful person at worst. Just say no to shaming each other.

Man, I'm kicking your ass! That's not all you can do to my ass. You know it. Wait, what?

Bottom to Bottom

When you realize nobody in the room is a top, and bumping booties simply gets nobody where he needs to go.

Bromances

It’s a different thing for gay guys. Gay or straight, you’re into him and you’re in his friend zone. theQatl.com 9

Warnock promises to fight ‘mealy-mouthed’ foes of LGBTQ equality

Q

“I know that the LGBTQ+ community has long been a part of that fight, and the tip of the spear and so I’m really honored to have this opportunity to have this conversation with you,” Warnock said. “We’ve needed members of the LGBTQ+ community to show us our blind spots and help us to become a more perfect union, so thank you so much for that work,” he added. “We’ve got a long way to go. Know that in me you’ll find an ally.”

By Matt Hennie RAPHAEL WARNOCK— THE LEADING Democrat trying to unseat U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler — held a virtual meet-and-greet with LGBTQ voters on Oct. 12 as early voting opened in Georgia. Polls showed Warnock surging to the top of a crowded field in the special election. Gov. Brian Kemp appointed Loeffler to her seat in December. She quickly carved out an anti-LGBTQ track record. Warnock told LGBTQ voters during the event that they have an ally in him. “I don’t believe that there’s any such thing as equal rights for some,” Warnock said. “And so my journey on embracing fully members of the LGBTQ+ community and the issues that you bring to the table [is] part of my continuing trek to try to be a better leader and a better person.” LGBTQ state Rep. Park Cannon and Savannah Mayor Van Johnson praised Warnock during the session. Cannon is a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Warnock has served as senior pastor since 2005, and Johnson helped shepherd the passage of an LGBTQ non-discrimination ordinance in his city. Warnock credited LGBTQ people with working to build a nation of “multi-racial, multi-faith, diverse coalition of conscience, black and red, yellow, brown, black and white, people of various orientations.” He said the country still has a long way to go, but that the LGBTQ movement sets an example on how to solve it.

The longtime Baptist preacher also addressed concerns from participants in the event about bigotry, trauma that some LGBTQ people experience from religious leaders, the dignity of sex workers, the heightened violence that trans women face, and support of people with HIV. “I am aware of the ways in which religion is so often used as a sword rather than a shield, as a weapon rather than a bridge,” he said. “I believe for me my faith means freedom, which is why I can’t wait to get to the U.S. Senate so when some mealy-mouthed politician stands up, pushes up against the Equality Act and comes up with some version of some RFRA law, I want to argue.” “I can’t wait to get to the United States Senate to translate my advocacy and activism into legislation,” Warnock added. THEATER

Out Front saves fall season without butts in seats THE SETTING? EMPTY VENUES ALL around Atlanta. The players? Literally everyone. And you know the 2020 themes all too well.

That’s the scene at Out Front Theatre Company, Atlanta’s exclusively LGBTQ troupe in West Midtown. Luckily, a plot twist of high gumption and big schemes will make queer theater arts happen this year despite COVID-19. “The biggest Brande Elise impact on the theater overall is our patrons not being able to interact with us as they normally would,” Conroy told Project Q. “The magic of live theater is to be there in person with a group of people watching a show that is alive in front of you.” Ideas continued percolating through lockdown, and a plan came together for a digital fall season. Oct. 23-25 sees DIVA: Live from Hell. The play tells the story of a very dramatic drama club president who responds with lethal force when a hotshot threatens his perch. Now he’s stuck in the Riley Mayhem Seventh Circle, Hell’s most squalid cabaret venue.

Out Front brings Bright Colors & Bold Patterns to home screens on Nov. 20-22. A loud friend upturns plans for a sophisticated gay wedding. In the aftermath, the play asks, “In the struggle for equality, what do we really want? What do we lose? And is there any cocaine left?” Fall wraps with The Santa Closet on Dec. 11-13. The North Pole denies a little boy’s gender-atypical gift request, and a series of subsequent letters nudge Santa to come out. A funny, sensitive tale emerges amid a culture-war scandal known as “Santa-gate.” Visit outfronttheatre.com.

Actor’s Express launches ‘Virtual Downstage’ slate REMAINING FLEXIBLE IN A LONG FIGHT can mean the difference between winning and simply surviving. That instinct kicked in when coronavirus protocols shut down the 32nd season at Actor’s Express Theatre Company in March.

Hometown Boy brings a man back to his rural Georgia hometown after a long absence. November welcomes Neat by Charlayne Woodard, and December brings An Actor’s Express Holiday Surprise!

“The silver lining for the shutdown — if there is one — is that it’s forced us to be nimble and extremely creative,” said Freddie Ashley, artistic director.

A monologue series is also available for free on the Actor’s Express YouTube channel. Selections include you are going to do amazing things by Quinn Xavier, Toward Joy by Amina McIntyre and Spongebob Spectrum Pineapple People by Avery Sharpe.

It's been a struggle, but also a learning experience, said Corey Smith, director of sales and marketing at Actor’s Express. “We understand that it might be some time before we have patrons within our physical space,” Smith said. “So we’ve done our best to bring the theatrical experience into our audiences’ homes via streaming.” To wit, Virtual Downstage A Theatrical Online Experience presents four programs. Now available, 12 theQatl.com

Ashley and Smith are both out and proud. They said LGBTQ inclusivity on staff and on stage has been part of the Actor’s Express from the beginning. Chris Coleman, a gay man, founded the theater 32 years ago. Visit actors-express.com. Read the full interviews by Mike Fleming on Project Q Atlanta at theQatl.com

End of

AN ERA

By Matt Hennie

THE OWNER OF ICONIC ATLANTA EAGLE says goodbye… at least for now, and its owner let it all out in an interview on Podcast Q. The Eagle, one of the city’s oldest LGBTQ bars and the site of a notorious police raid, closes next month, becoming the latest victim of a coronavirus pandemic that has dealt crippling financial blows to LGBTQ businesses. Owner Richard Ramey (top photo) announced the end of the bar’s 33-year run on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Midtown last week. He hoped that the bar would reopen in a new location sometime in 2021. “We are not closing permanently,” Ramey said. “We are going to come back bigger, better, stronger than ever. It’s been a very emotional year. I am just beyond words what this year has done to so many of us.” After two weekends of VIP closing parties, the Eagle will celebrate last call at its current location

on Nov. 14. Ramey wants to celebrate with patrons in small groups during events that will include an open bar, commemorative t-shirts and giveaways of bricks from the building. “You’ll get to leave with a piece of history. It is an iconic bar,” Ramey said. The bar suffered financially during the pandemic with sales plummeting by about 80 percent, Ramey said. It closed in March, then reopened with limited capacity in June. Most patrons made the decision to stay safe at home, something Ramey said he understands and respects. But the toll on the bar’s finances is unrelenting. “That’s why I’ve decided to close and reopen when this pandemic is over. My goal, if science and the world will accept it, I’m hoping for a June opening. We will have to wait and see,” Ramey said. Ramey became tearful in his Podcast Q interview. Q Advice

Crazy &

AFRAID

Fears of yourself and what other people think

Q

Bondage porn is hot, but I’ve only had vanilla sex. What’s going on in my head is way

different than what’s going on in the bed.

I’m afraid to try BDSM. The fetish folks I see at Pride fuel my fantasies, but also my fears.

They’re intimidating. I’m also afraid of being

seen as a freak. People ridicule fetishists behind their backs, and I’m afraid of being lumped in with them.

Should I try it anyway? Dear Afraid: Fears get a bad rap, but they’re not all

created equally. Natural “fight or flight”

responses kick in as a warning to evaluate your situation.

The problem comes if you stop there. If you accept fear as a reason to avoid circumstances without assessing them and making an informed decision, you’re stuck.

BDSM wants to use fear to your sexual advantage. Turned on and intimidated at the same time? That’s the point. Adrenaline pumps, you’re

short of breath, and your sweet relief comes from giving in. You owe it to yourself to try it. A whole community of people can teach you about passion via consent and trust. 30 theQatl.com

But some fears need to be faced and conquered. Fear of what others think? Forget it. Naysayers

might use their own fears to ostracize people that they don’t understand, and we can’t make our personal decisions based on those people.

Q

I’m turned on by a hot guy eating food like it’s his last meal. Like, he just can’t get

enough in his mouth at one time. I watch his

lips and tongue, and I imagine feeding him and controlling what he tastes and when.

Call me crazy, but is it too much to hope that a man might share my unique kink? Help! Dear Crazy: The good news is you’re actually not crazy. The bad news might be that you’re not even that

unique. Others are out there, so spell out your desires for a hungry guy and see who bites.

Q Advice is intended for entertainment, not professional counseling. Send your Qs to mike@theQatl.com.
