MASS

NOV. 3 IS A CRITICAL DAY IN THE LIVES of LGBTQ Atlantans. In fact, some might say that it’s the most crucial day in years for queer safety, rights and survival. It’s time to flick the

political pendulum back toward LGBTQ justice. It may feel like both yesterday and a lifetime ago that the Trump tide turned that fateful

November night in 2016. On Tuesday, Election Day comes as your best chance

political storm — every tweet, every official decision that hurts LGBTQ people or removes protections — there’s a feeling of “this has to be the worst of it.” Then the realization that we haven’t yet hit the eye wall of the storm. People already clinging to the edge are pushed into deeper despair. Knowing how to help often seems unclear. Finally, it’s time to act. Now is our moment. But if voting against something or someone isn’t your style, there’s plenty to vote for as well. Vote in favor of the rights of women. Vote for equal treatment for people of color. Vote for equity in resources and opportunities. Vote for people who not only accept the reality of LGBTQ lives, but welcome us at their tables.

for disenfranchised voters to respond in a concrete way.

Yes, this means you — even if

you’ve never voted before, even

if you aren’t comfy with some of the choices, even if you believe

you may or may not get around to it, and yes, even if you “don’t vote” with some notion that it doesn’t matter.

MIKE FLEMING

Consider Tuesday the day that

queers can shout in unison from the proverbial

rooftops that we’re mad as hell and we’re not go-

ing to take it anymore. The loud declaration itself

should bring some relief for our road-weary souls. If you haven’t already, vote as if local queer lives depend on it, because they do.

The reigning administration truncates our rights

at every turn. Officials installed in every corner of government express interest in further limiting or eliminating equal access for LGBTQ people. He openly fuels sparks of hatred and intices dissent that support such discrimination.

The past four years have been tough. With every 8 theQatl.com

With the correct people in office, at home and in Washington, we can create a layer of protection for ourselves from very real hostile forces toward LGBTQ communities.

The best news is that we can win. The numbers are there. We just have to do our part. “Our part” is more than just voting, too. It’s more than posting a sermon to the choir. Make phone calls. Have tough conversations. Tell everyone in your reach how their votes can make a real difference — for better or worse. Ask people who love you to consider your safety. Then make a plan, help others make plans, and do what you need to do. Then start daydreaming of ways to swing that pendulum further in Georgia in 2022. 10 THINGS

GE RGIA 10 LGBTQ issues facing the representatives we elect on Nov. 3 By Mike Fleming THERE’S ONE COALITION OF DEDICATED staff and volunteers actively fighting for queer rights in our state every single day. On Election Day, the officials they engage in conversation the rest of the year are up to us. “Georgia Equality represents a large and diverse group of individuals across a wide array of issues,” the organization says on its website.

BASIC CIVIL RIGHTS V. ‘RELIGIOUS FREEDOM’

Georgia residents are among the most vulnerable in the nation — lacking explicit protections from Here are 10 core challenges to have top-of-mind for discrimination for people based on sexual orienGeorgia when you’re at the polling station, including tation and/or gender identity. GE is increasingly Georgia Equality’s take on the issue. Find out more at concerned with religions exemption laws that target georgiaequality.org/issues. LGBTQ citizens in false pretense, as religious liberty is already enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

EMPLOYMENT NON-DISCRIMINATION

As of 2020, the U.S. finally has a law that prevents discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in private employment. It’s the kind of win we need to continue in other areas and to make sure is enforced in Georgia.

HOUSING

There is no law in Georgia preventing landowners from refusing to rent or sell to our citizens based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

YOUTH & SAFE SCHOOLS Nearly 9 in 10 LGBT students report experiencing harassment within the last school year, and 3 in 10 report missing a class — or even a whole day of school — because they felt unsafe.

on Our Mind DISCRIMINATION IN BUSINESS & SERVICES

MARRIAGE & RELATIONSHIPS

For a similar perspective, our state doesn’t even have a law that prevents local businesses from refusing service to patrons because of their religion. 11 municipalities in Georgia have varying degrees of protections for some employees and residents.

HIV ADVOCACY

COMMUNITY SAFETY At long last, the death of Ahmaud Arbery got Georgia Republicans to see the need for a hate crimes law. LGBTQ lobbyists and Dems helped push it over the finish line so we are no longer one of only five states without one. Enforcing it can now be a priority.

LGBTQ PARENTAL RIGHTS

Gay and transgender people become parents in diverse ways including adoption, technology, and previous heterosexual relationships. Georgia’s current laws create barriers for LGBTQ families from the same protections that other families receive.

Georgia Equality offers resources on obtaining a marriage license, filing joint tax returns, a list of federal benefits for married same-sex couples as part of the Why Marriage Matters in Georgia campaign.

Over 50,000 Georgians are living with HIV, and an average of 3,000 are newly diagnosed each year. Our state ranks sixth in number of people living with HIV, second in new diagnoses, and third in people living with an AIDS diagnosis. The only growing category of those infected is men who have sex with me, and 60% of black gay and bisexual men in Atlanta are expected to become infected with HIV before they are 30.

TRANS ADVOCACY

As part of TransAction Georgia, Georgia Equality seeks to build relationships within the transgender community with focus of building leadership and independence, provide training to businesses on LGBTQ coworkers, advocate for laws and policies that include gender identity and gender expression, and expand trans awareness and visibility. theQatl.com 11

Rainbow COALITION Biden’s Georgia campaign gets backing of 48 LGBTQ leaders By Patrick Saunders THE JOE BIDEN CAMPAIGN NAMED FOURdozen elected officials, faith leaders, non-profit leaders, business owners and other community leaders to its Georgia LGBTQ Leadership Council on Tuesday. The council launch comes two weeks before Election Day as polls show a tight race in Georgia between Biden and President Donald Trump. “Now is the time for members of the LGBTQ+ community to make sure their voices are heard,” state Rep. Park Cannon said in a press release. “It is up to us to work in lockstep with our allies and continue to make progress and protect the rights of the most vulnerable among us.”

steadfast commitment to championing the rights of all people is essential to the future of our nation.” Graham noted “how fragile the path to equality can be.”

Cannon is co-chair of the council alongside Doraville Mayor Pro-Tem Stephe Koontz, Bishop O.C. Allen of Vision Church of Atlanta, transgender activist Tracee McDaniel, Georgia Equality Executive Director Jeff Graham and state Reps. Sam Park and Matthew Wilson.

Wilson said the U.S. needs “a message of unity and equality, not hate and divisiveness.” “Our community has been on the receiving end of violence and discrimination for far too long, and we need leaders who are not afraid to stand up and

IN BRIEF

Fulton candidate wants to expand county’s bias policy, PrEP access JUSTIN HOLSOMBACK WANTS TO BAN discrimination against LGBTQ people in housing and public accommodations if he’s elected to the Fulton County Commission in November.

LGBTQ activists sue Georgia Capitol police over arrests TWO LGBTQ ACTIVISTS JOINED A STATE senator and others in a federal lawsuit over their arrests during a protest at the Georgia State Capitol. The lawsuit against a dozen officers from the Georgia Department of Public Safety alleges that the law used to arrest 15 people during the 2018 protest is unconstitutional. The activists also claimed that jailers mistreated them.

The IT recruiter and Democratic Party activist also wants to make free PrEP available at all Fulton public health facilities. Holsomback would return LGBTQ representation to the commission for the first time since 2017. “Bringing the LGBTQ perspective is important,” Holsomback told Project Q Atlanta. “What’s important to you is grounded by your experience, and in my opinion, it’s hard for someone to make LGBTQ issues a focus if they don’t have that perspective.”

Mary Hooks, Devin-Barrington-Ward, state Sen. Nikema Williams and seven others filed the suit in September in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

Holsomback is running for the commission’s District 2 seat. He jumped into the race after the incumbent, Bob Ellis, voted to stop taking grants from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. Fulton failed to spend $5.4 million in HUD grants over five years.

Ari Willis, a transgender former journalist, was also arrested during the protest but did not take part in the lawsuit.

“That’s millions of dollars that were going to seniors and first-time homebuyers that can’t qualify for financing,” Holsomback said.

Q Advice

STOP

Worrying

Wringing your hands compounds your current issues

Q

When I was in my 20s and 30s, I had more confidence than I deserved. As I push well into my 40s, I feel old, fat and ugly. Everywhere are signs of ageism, and the little Body Nazis judging everybody are killing my self-worth.

How much better off are you than when you were their age? How much are your knowledge and life skills worth? Would you really take your old body back in exchange for all you’ve gained? Your experiences define you, and your life is rich with them. Also, you’re younger today than you will ever be again, so stop worrying.

Q

My significant other is so hot, sometimes I have to excuse myself at work just to go diddle out my thoughts in private. Seriously. People everywhere we go agree. I’m ridiculously jealous, and to make it worse, I’m actually envious of my own bae, too. I don’t think I’m ugly, but sometimes I wish Mother Nature made me as hot as my boo. I love having them at my side, but I wonder if other people think I’m not worthy. Help! Dear Green: Gay people are in a position to both want, and want to be, people of their same sex. The inner push-and-pull is unique, but your struggle with it is not.

Dear Fugly: Getting older is certainly better than the alternative, and a slew of our queer brethren died before finding that out. They might tell us that aging is a privilege. Acknowledge LGBTQ ageism, but don’t absorb it. Reject groupthink about youthful beauty, especially when coming from younger people, and re-evaluate it for yourself. 30 theQatl.com

Tap into knowing that this beautiful person chose to be with you. If they think you’re worthy, so should you. Their attraction toward you will erode if you behave jealously – not because you’re ugly, but because you’re insecure. They’ll also notice if you choose instead to trust them. So will the jealous bitches dishing about your relationship as if it’s any of their business. You can’t change nature, but worrying without changing your perspective is just emotional self-flagellation. Stop it. Q Advice is intended for entertainment, not professional counseling.
