gynecomastia:
The Male Curse So many men have enlarged breasts. Did you know that 30-60% of men are affected by large breasts? This common condition affects the self-esteem of men. The cause and treatments remain a mystery for most men because we never discuss the issue. If you are embarrassed to remove your shirt in public or in private because of your chest… you have Gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalanced ratio of testosterone to estrogen at puberty. This imbalance can cause fat and/or glandular tissue to be deposited in greater quantity in the breasts. Gym steroids can cause or contribute to gynecomastia. Surgery is the only way to fix the problem. Liposuction with or without glandular excision is the cure. These procedures are performed as out-patient surgeries. Most men will miss only a few days from work. Post-operative pain and discomfort is minimal. Since there are no adverse health effects with Gynecomastia, it is considered a cosmetic surgical procedure. The cost of the treatment is similar to liposuction costs. Keith Jeffords, MD is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Smyrna, Georgia. He is the 2018 Moderator for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ series on “Aesthetic Surgery for Men” and lecturer on Gynecomastia.

EDITOR’S NOTE
Summer
KICKOFF
Memorial Day in queer Atlanta means soaking ourselves in the season TEMPS ARE ON THE RISE, and that trademark Southern humidity is quickly following suit. Must be summertime in the LGBTQ-ATL, and Q magazine is here for it. Our cameras are catching people getting a jump on the season in Q Shots, and our Queer Agenda calendar just keeps growing with opportunities to join the fray. Of course, that’s just the beginning of what’s on tap inside this week’s issue.
MIKE FLEMING EDITOR & PUBLISHER
Last week, 10 Queer Things gave a more topical glimpse at tough issues we face this election year. This week, we take a lighter, tongue-in-cheek look at the “Real LGBTQ Agenda.” Turns out, the daily queer quest to take over America looks a lot like everyone else’s lives, and that to-do list may be the best argument yet for equality.
Even if you’re playing catchup on summer’s unofficial arrival, Memorial Day Weekend should bring everyone into those midyear vibes. Local queer clubs and organizations are pulling out the stops, and our Holigay roundup includes them, as well as details of the most popular road trips for the three-day weekend and beyond. The first time you may really think summer is when you’re tempted to wear shorts, or when you notice all the gorgeous gams on folks who are already doing so. This year’s go-to saturated hues can be found at Atlanta’s thrift stores, and our Fashion photo essay helps you attain that steeped-in-color look without those deep-in-pocket prices. Elsewhere in Q this week, Vince Shifflett talks dating and aging in Q Voices, and The Q advises a few one-sided love affairs. As always, Q News gives you the week’s biggest buzz, and you can always find more every day on our home site, theQatl.com. Write me anytime with your feedback, your writing and photography interest, or any other Q related thoughts at mike@qmagatlanta.com. 4

Tales and characters encountered while dating and aging
I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BE PART OF THE dating scene at this age. After all, isn’t this the age when you are supposed to be settled? It has reinforced my belief in the fact that nothing is certain and that we must embrace the uncertainty in life. Dating at age 55 has been both fun and frustrating at the same time. I have met some amazing people and learned a lot. Some have even turned out to be great friends. On the other hand, I have also met some interesting characters. I always go into the date with an open heart. but more often than not I’m finding that it’s not my heart they want open if you know what I mean. I continue to hear, “I don’t know what I want.” Is it possible to be over 40 and still not know what you want? Certainly not judging, just trying to understand.
I think the LGBTQ community is different from the straight community in that many of us do not have children, and at my age, our parents are dying or deceased. This leaves us with a smaller support network as we age. To me, that’s reason enough to settle down and stop looking over the smorgasbord for a better entrée. I’m not suggesting that we settle just for the sake of “having someone,” but I am trying to examine behaviors as I continue to date. I’ve come to understand that, whether it’s me or the muscle dude in the park or the man I may look at as a troll, we are all trying to make our way as best we can. I have learned to stop chasing the rainbow of perfection.
I commit to look beyond the surface and not value the wrapping over the content. There is no perfect being or perfect relationship. I am open to meeting Mr. Right with no limitations. Limitations get in the way. How often do we tell ourselves, “Oh he’s too young,” “He’s too big,” “He’s too small,” “His butt is too small,”” He walks funny,” “He talks funny,” “He’s too nelly,” …? Accepting and loving people as they are, being completely open to the possibility of a relationship even though they may not have “everything” is important. No one will ever have everything we want.
I also hear, “ I need more time,” “I’m not quite It’s about having someone to share life with. ready,” “I’m still getting over my X,” “I’ve got too V I N C E S H I F F LET T Mutual caring and great conversation are more much going on right now.” I call them tales, but important than skin tone, fat bootie, no bootie, I see them as excuses driven by fear or the need masculine, feminine and other traits we deem to continue to explore what else is out there. I’ve been guilty “necessary.” And there is nothing wrong with preference. myself of telling the tales. Perhaps not everyone wants a relationship, at me. And when he does, we will both know. We will leave the least not now. There is a great chance that your options will issue anymore. be more limited at that point. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy the process. A recent study found that 58% of LGBTQ seniors live alone, compared to just 25% of straight older adults. A full 15% of that Vince Shifflett lives and loves in Atlanta. What’s your experience? Bottoms joins Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination Bottoms joins fellow Georgia mayors Patti Garrett (Decatur), Melanie Hammet (Pine Lake) and Ted Terry (Clarkston) in the 300-plus member nationwide coalition. Former mayors Kasim Reed (Atlanta) and Jannquell Peters (East Point) joined last year when the coalition was founded. “The City of Atlanta is the cradle of the Civil Rights movement in America and we continue to value the protection of all human rights,” Bottoms said in a prepared statement. “Joining Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination is another important step towards protecting the dignity and freedom of all who call Atlanta home.”
levels of government.
The announcement continues a busy month on the LGBTQ front for the newly-minted mayor. Bottoms appointed Malik Brown as the city’s first full-time LGBTQ liaison and unveiled the 33-member LGBTQ advisory board on May 4. On May 6, she made her first HRC Atlanta Gala Dinner & Auction address as mayor.
Blondie concert for Stonewall Month cancelled
City won’t have to pay for rainbow crosswalks damage

JUNE’S HIGHLY anticipated Atlanta Pride show featuring legendary rock band Blondie won’t take place. Ticket holders got a disappointing e-mail from Fox Theatre’s automated system on May 15.
CITY OF ATLANTA OFFICIALS SAY DAMAGE TO THE celebrated rainbow crosswalks earlier this year was paid for by AT&T and not the city.
ATLANTA MAYOR KEISHA LANCE BOTTOMS ON May 15 announced her official enrollment in Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination, a bipartisan coalition dedicated to
securing LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination protections at all
The first-ever Pride Month collaboration with the venue and the Pride committee was to include the Blondie show and a dance party on June 22, as well as a comedy show featuring Wanda Sykes and Tig Notaro on June 20. The comedy show is still scheduled to take place, said Jamie Fergerson, executive director of Atlanta Pride. Fergerson confirmed the cancellation with Project Q, but since the performance contract was booked through the Fox and not Pride, she was still rounding up information about what happened when word got out about the concert. “The comedy show is fine. They are separately booked,” Fergerson said. “While we are disappointed, we really appreciate the Fox bringing us this opportunity and look forward to the Wanda Sykes and Tig Notaro show. We look forward to other partnerships with them in the future.”
The northeast corner of the LGBT-themed splash of color at 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue was paved over in February, and repairs were finished about a month later. City officials told Project Q Atlanta on Tuesday that repairs were handled by AT&T subcontractor Ansco & Associates. “AT&T paid the subcontractor to make the repairs,” said city spokesperson Michael Smith. “No city funds were used for the repairs, and neither AT&T or the subcontractor would disclose the cost of the repairs.” The city spent $196,000 to install the rainbow crosswalks over the July 4th holiday last year. The price tag includes a year of maintenance and upkeep from contractors before the city’s public works crews take over the responsibility. The crosswalks are expected to last 10 years. theQatl.com

First openly transgender man graduates from Spelman By Patrick Saunders KEO CHAAD O’NEAL BECAME THE FIRST OPENLY transgender man to graduate from Spelman College, according to a May 13 tweet from the groundbreaking history major. O’Neal’s post has been retweeted nearly 6,000 times, and O’Neal is opening up about his journey at the Atlanta liberal arts college, which became the second historically black women’s college to embrace transgender female students when it announced the policy in November. The 21-year-old told Huffington Post’s Black Voices that he began at Spelman identifying as non-binary and using they/ them pronouns, but “no one could catch on to that, so it was kind of hard to exist as myself.” He transferred to a predominantly white school after his freshman year, where he said he was able to grow and develop and be his “full queer self,” according to Upworthy, but he felt Spelman calling him back. “I felt like no matter what, I was sacrificing a part of myself, so then it came down to which fight I wanted to fight,” O’Neal said. “This became one of those instances where you have to choose your race over your sexuality which, unfortunately, a lot of QPOC [queer people of color] have to do.” During his final two years at Spelman, he received a lot of backlash from “current students, their parents and alum” after coming out during a convocation with author and activist Alice Walker. “Lots of people believed that because I was trans, I didn’t belong at Spelman but there was nowhere else I would rather be,” he said. “People still have their own opinions of me attending Spelman, but it’s because of Spelman why I am who I am.” O’Neal did note that people were more curious and willing to learn about sexuality and gender after his return to Spelman. “I find that people are a lot more genuine when talking to me about queerness because they really just want to understand, which is something I never got my freshman year,” he said. And he had a wise note for others finding themselves in similar situations. “Sometimes you have to carve out your own spaces to exist, and that is OK, but do not allow anyone to put you in a cor14

Spelman has been in the news recently after a string of anti-LGBTQ notes were found on campus, including anti-trans notes directed at the president of the school’s LGBTQ student group. In 2014, vandals littered sidewalks at Spelman and Morehouse with anti-gay slurs as the two colleges prepared to celebrate Pride. Spelman President Mary Schmidt Campbell had a stern message for the perpetrator(s) in the latest incidents: “You are not Spelman.”

By Mike Fleming hile gay days in Pensacola and Gay Days at Disney bring queer caravans to the Sunshine State, those staying in Atlanta for the three-day weekend and beyond still have plenty to celebrate. Hotlanta Softball League’s national Big Peach tournament – as well as its accompanying parties – are a must to meet and cheer scores of pitchers and catchers from all over the country. THEQ?! Hittin’ It &
What to do when the sex was good, and you want more. But do they?
QUITTIN’ IT
Q
The softball teammate I’ve always had a crush on found out I like her, and long story short we had sex. Good sex. Great sex. We were already good friends with lots in common, so now I keep daydreaming about us together. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it, but then again, she is making too little of a deal out of it. She avoids being within a foot of me, all while wrestling, rough-housing and basically being all over other girls on our team. It’s killing me. Wanting women I can’t have is a pattern for me. I’m so needy. What can I do? Dear Circling the Drain: Everyone of us has been in a one-sided romance, but you’re jumping the gun. There’s not enough information to go on the downward spiral of gloom. Most of your internal drama comes from sitting in the dark. Buck up, and turn on the lights. Letting your imagination run away with you creates worst-case scenarios, which in turn can cause you to act in ways that might ruin your friendship – and your chances. The only way to find out is to ask what sex meant to her. She may be coming to terms with it, but then again, maybe you’re on the same page and she’s just as nervous as you about seeming needy. Either way, be ready to accept the answer and clear the air so you can keep the friend.
Q
I’ve been with the same guy for seven years, but the magic has been gone a long time. I love my husband, but lack of excitement has led me to stray several times. It never mattered until a recent hookup flooded over into the parking lot, then to his place. The mutual plan was to keep it No Strings Attached, but the more we got together, the more I realized that this guy is special. I knew I shouldn’t, but got caught up anyway. Then I texted, and he was on a date. Now he’s not responding at all. I get that this is a situation that I shouldn’t be in at all, but I want him back in my life on some level. 38

Dear Dick: You’re married. He’s dating. The relationship is over. He knows it. You don’t. One-sided breakups suck, but expecting to have your cake and eat it too is why you’re here in the first place. You want to listen to your heart. Cool: Your heart wants romance. You’re missing emotional connection even as you agitate the void. Step one: Deal with your marriage. Get counseling to fix it, or get single so you have something to offer in the next potential relationship.
Q
The sexiest man in the universe gave it to me good, and now I’m smitten. I’m aching to get to know him, but I can’t get a callback. He hit it, but did he quit it? Dear Eager: Sorry, boo. If you’re desperately texting, calling and hitting him up without response, you have your answer. The Q is for entertainment purposes and not professional counseling.
