MIKE FLEMING
Part social commentary, part tongue-in-cheek and all art, Georgia kings and queens buck drag tradition in Hicks’ stunning portraits. It’s right on par for Q, as we relish watching folks make lemonade from lemons, or in some of these cases, fabulous drag from literal trash. EDITOR & PUBLISHER
Also on tap, it’s Madonna’s 60th birthday, and like any anniversary that ends in zero, we thought we’d stop to look back at lessons that the pop icon has taught us just by living out that charmed life of hers. It’s an in-depth dive for this week’s 10 Queer Things. But it’s not all lesson-learned and potential-met this week. Kyle Rose has a run-in in Piedmont Park that shows we still have a way to go for true queer equality — especially outside our Midtown bubble — in his Q Voices column. Q News has some political action in this crucial election year, and there are three queer conundrums waiting for solutions in The Q advice column. Cue rhetoric, clusters, losers and rebounds. But where would we and our readers be here at Q without our standard-bearing features? Home alone, that’s where, and none of us wants that. True to form, we offer up Q Shots photo albums of past events and the Queer Agenda calendar of upcoming ones to keep your schedule popping. We’d also be nowhere without you, dear reader, so we keep you going with fresh content every day on our Project Q Atlanta sister site at theQatl.com, and I welcome your feedback via mike@theQatl.com. theQatl.com

happiness on her face. She was wholly caught up in the day and the park, and it was truly beautiful to see her celebrating both.
MIDTOWN
Feel free to enjoy our diversity and unity, haters, but leave your judgments behind
Wow. I was stunned. What just happened? Did it really happen? Yes. Yes, it did.
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER SUNDAY, A PERFECT balance of sun and clouds, hot but with a cool breeze. There was group of turbaned men playing soccer in the center field at Piedmont Park. Further down, a larger group of various ages, races and genders was caught up in a determined game of Frisbee. Many voices shouting and laughing kept the games and players lively. A young black family with their baby were enjoying a picnic under a tree. Some of the homeless regulars were sleeping in the shade, a few more talking on a nearby bench. At various times, the pathway held two women walking hand in hand, a family biking, several young queers on scooters, and a gay couple with their baby. The picture went on and on. It extends through park fields and city blocks and weekends filled with all kinds of people from all kind of backgrounds and with all kinds of lives enjoying the park and the days, peacefully if not joyfully co-existing.
I said out loud to myself, “I don’t think you’re in the right place.” And he was in the wrong place, the wrong place for hatred.
Midtown is one of many places going through big changes. Newcomers are paying big bucks KYLE to live in their high-rise apartments. Many, if ROSE not most, are coming here for Midtown as the neighborhood is known to be.
On that particular summer day, I was in swim trunks, lying in the grass with my dog under the shade of a tree. I have been laying in the park like that for many years. As we settled, in the middle of my other worldly mind space and cloud watching, I heard a rustling commotion. I rolled my head to the side and saw a young girl, probably five or six years old, running across the field with a look of pure laughing theQatl.com
Now, the guy did not exactly get in anyone’s face. He didn’t focus his bigotry on anyone in particular or express any specific prejudice. But it was there. His revulsion was real, and his judgment loud and clear. Hate.
If you really need to be a hater, I guess that’s your right, but don’t bring your hatred here.
You’ve seen it. You are most likely a part of it: Midtown. Piedmont Park. I love this place! I love all of the people and energy that create and support and maintain it. In all fairness, part of what I love is that a significant part of this place is LGBTQ. The “love” hearts mural and rainbow crosswalks may speak for themselves, but they speak our words, of our lives. They are monuments to our culture and values.
8
Suddenly and without warning, the moment collapsed as a large barking voice followed her, “Stop running! Get back here! I don’t want you having to look at all this!” An angry man yelled at her, ran her down, and yanked her arm pulling her to him. A woman, I’m guessing wife and mother, silently joined them. They quickly turned and left.
That neighborhood is us. It is the many LGBTQ people who, for many, many years have filled it with love and inclusiveness. It is the people you see in Piedmont Park every day. Midtown is rich and poor. It is all ages, races, genders and orientations living together. Not just living together, but living together happily! The things from which the hater wants to protect himself and his family are the very things that make Midtown the haven that it is. We know Midtown is growing. It is inevitable. We welcome you to our neighborhood, but not your hate. For the sake of Midtown, for those of us who live here, and those who want to live here because of what it is and represents, please don’t bring your hatred here. Leave it behind, let go of it. And to that little girl who was running in the park that day: You are always welcome. I hope you are OK. Kyle Rose is a retired gay rights and AIDS activist in Atlanta who writes about queer culture and politics.

Q
10 QUEER THINGS By Mike Fleming
T
rue gay icons are hard to come by. Among a precious few equals and a ton of pretenders, Madonna still stands out at any age. As the one-and-only celebrates another rotation around the sun on Aug. 16, here’s a loving look at the legend who won hearts three decades ago and just won’t let go.
10 things Her Madge-esty taught us as Queer Atlanta sets to celebrate her 60th birthday
MAD
Life Lessons from
Never, Ever APOLOGIZE
From the moment she told American Bandstand that her life goal was “to rule the world,” to the time she told 20/20 to look up “reductive” in the dictionary, Madonna has served a heaping helping of brash intelligence, focused intent, marketing genius and a middle finger to traditional, “acceptable” behavior. Challenge norms.
Put On a SHOW Reinvent YOURSELF With a world ready — even if they didn’t know it — for shaking up, Madonna brought the heat in 1983 with her eponymous debut. Music moguls, radio stations and middle America didn’t know what to do with her, and the MTV Generation loved that. No one had seen anything like her, but what really makes Madonna, well, Madonna is how she took that reaction, time and again, and successfully changed things up just as we got used to what she was doing. 10
theQatl.com
As her sold-out tours in the world’s biggest venues attest, there’s nothing quite like a Madonna concert. Among thousands of rabid queer fans, we’ve enjoyed dance numbers that trek every corner of the stage, as well as intimate spotlights on just a girl and her guitar. Madonna knows how to please a crowd. The other lesson that gay guys love from her performances? Always leave them wanting just a little bit more.
Act BOLDLY Madonna moved from Detroit to New York in 1977 with $35 in her pocket, a dream, and no place to sleep. She still calls it the “bravest thing I’ve ever done.” One of the richest women in entertainment taught us about paying dues and working hard through scores of menial jobs like Dunkin’ Donuts and nude photo shoots for rent money.
Work a LOOK Which Madonna is your favorite? More than one? Thought so. The blonde coquette of the ‘80s became a bobbed brunette, a Marilyn-esque Glamour Goddess, Geisha, ‘90s Sex Goddess, ‘70s Disco Queen, Retro Princess, and So. Many. More. Whatever you’re wearing — or not wearing — have fun, look fierce, and work it like a boss.
Love WILDLY Besides doing you, Madonna wants you to do other people — all you like. Answering only to herself, Madonna has had boy toys, femme flings and husbands, and she’s had them from famous to just plain hot. She says she’s “in love with love.”
DONNA Mary’s Madonnarama is set for Aug. 17, and our photos from Heretic’s M60 party are on page 32.
Embrace Your SEXUALITY
Court CONTROVERSY
Long before her book of the same name, “sex” was a noun that no article about Madonna ever goes without. With trendsetting looks like underwear as outerwear, performances from flirty to aggressive to brazen, video themes from peep shows to S&M, and songs from “Like a Virgin” to “Justify My Love” and beyond, she redefined sex symbol in ways few can even approach and even fewer have matched.
From her early days wearing crucifixes and rosaries as jewelry, rolling around MTV’s live stage in a wedding dress and playing a pregnant teen in the “Papa Don’t Preach” video, Madonna knew that a little, maybe even a lot, of controversy goes a long way. More recently, she superimposed a swastika over the image of a far-right French leader during a concert in Paris and taunted Putin over Russia’s anti-gay laws.
Develop Outside INTERESTS Not content to live as just another pop star churning out content, Madonna broadened her horizons with forays into Kabbalah, Broadway musicals, children’s charities, line-dancing, British history, and movie-making, to name just a few.
Rather than shy away from scandal, she embraces it, rubs our faces in it, and justifies every move as her right to artistic expression, freedom of speech and independent thinking. She may not have invented the phrase “There’s no such thing as bad publicity,” but she turned it into an art form.
Have a BLAST If you aren’t having fun, why are you working so hard to have a life? With her life as the example, Madonna asks that question then answers it time and again. theQatl.com

NEWS Q
Two Georgia candidates of faith have our LGBTQ backs when it comes to ‘religious freedom’ By Patrick Saunders GEORGIA ATTORNEY GENERAL CANDIDATE CHARLIE Bailey traces his opposition to anti-LGBTQ “religious freedom” bills back to the African-American civil rights movement of the 1950s and ‘60s. “It attempts to enshrine into law the discrimination of individuals, and I think we found a long time ago that you can’t use commerce to say, ‘I don’t want to serve this kind of person, I don’t want to sell to this kind of person,” Bailey told Project Q Atlanta. Bailey, 35, studied religion and political science at the University of Georgia before entering law school Charlie Bailey there, and his faith is another reason he opposes “religious freedom” bills. “Listen, I majored in religion. I’ve given a sermon in the United Methodist Church. I’m not going to take lectures from anybody on religion,” he said. “Faith is very important to me, but our faith cannot be a guise for discrimination. That’s not in line with my personal faith, but it’s also not what this country is about.” Bailey has said that if a “religious freedom” bill becomes law and is later challenged in court, he will refuse to defend it as attorney general. He also said he would weigh in from his office with legal opinions against discriminatory legislation that is signed into law. The Democrat faces Republican incumbent Chris Carr, who in April joined a group of 17 state attorneys general in a letter to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services voicing support for “religious freedom” rights, which Bailey calls a distraction. “While he’s doing those things, he’s not focusing on the things that are his job, which is you’re supposed to be the top prosecutor in the state,” Bailey said. “My opponent goes around trying to parrot these talking points and say, ‘We’re the best state to do business in the country’ and all this kind of thing. Well, we won’t be if the things that he’s pushing get made law.”
wasn’t a talking point out of D.C. It was about human decency and how we treat our brothers and sisters,” he said. “So yes, it is moral to me and it is personal as well.”
Lt. gov candidate also touts faith and equality SARAH RIGGS AMICO IS RUNNING TO BE GEORGIA’S next lieutenant governor as an evangelical Christian that backs LGBTQ equality and strongly opposes anti-gay “religious freedom” bills. But her support for progressive issues doesn’t stop there. “I know that confuses a lot of people to be a pro-labor, prochoice, pro-marriage equality, pro-gay rights Christian,” Amico told Project Q Atlanta. “I personally think it’s quite consistent with my beliefs.” Endorsements by Georgia Equality and Georgia Stonewall Democrats likely helped her in the primary, and one recent high profile endorsement is sure to help her in the general election. Amico, 39, was one of only four Georgia candidates endorsed recently by former President Barack Obama. Amico, a Democrat, faces Republican former state Rep. Geoff Duncan, who pulled off an upset win against state Sen. David Shafer in a July runoff. The Cumming-based Duncan supports “religious freedom” Sarah Riggs Amico legislation. He also voted for House Bill 757, an anti-LGBTQ omnibus bill that Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed in 2016. Amico leaves no questions about where she stands. “I think it’s inexcusable,” she said. “This is not who we are as Americans. It’s not who we are as human beings. And candidly, I think it’s a huge black mark on the Georgia state Senate.”
Bailey’s argument against “religious freedom” bills goes beyond a legal and economic one.
“I would say to my fellow Christians, it’s time for you guys to get up and do the work too,” she added. “If you don’t like gay marriage, fine — don’t have one. But, civil rights is a thing that we need to be vocal in protecting.”
“When you do unto others as you would have done onto you, that

For one of his latest projects, Q contributing photographer James L. Hicks, the local talent behind coffee table books like Drag Dolls, Dames & Divas and Dog Face, set out on a mission to find queens and kings whose artistry spoke to him in a creative, even avant-garde way that defies and/ or expands traditional notions of beauty.
“The drag artists range from seasoned veterans of 30-plus years to baby drags who have been performing for less than two years,” Hicks says. “These kings and queens have really inspired me, because they are so unconventional, daring and on the edge.”
