R | RELATIONSHIPS Is my Relationship Healthy? BY ROZWELL MODEL CHELSEA PEREZ PHOTOGRAPHS BY ASHLEY HOLLOWAY PHOTOGRAPHY

I

t Feels Like Love — But Is It? Sometimes it feels impossible to find someone who's right for you — and who thinks you're right for him or her! So when it happens, you're usually so psyched that you don't even mind when your little brother finishes all the ice cream or your English teacher chooses the one day when you didn't do your reading to give you a pop quiz.

It's totally normal to look at the world through rose-colored glasses in the early stages of a relationship. But for some people, those rose-colored glasses turn into blinders that keep them from seeing that a relationship isn't as healthy as it should be. 14

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US † 03.14

R | RELATIONSHIPS What Makes a Healthy Relationship? Hopefully, you and your significant other are treating each other well. Not sure if that's the case? Take a step back from the dizzying sensation of being swept off your feet and think about whether your relationship has these seven qualities:

Mutual respect. Does he or she get how cool you are and why? (Watch out if the answer to the first part is yes but only because you're acting like someone you're not!) The key is that your BF or GF is into you for who you are — for your great sense of humor, your love of reality TV, etc. Does your partner listen when you say you're not comfortable doing something and then back off right away? Respect in a relationship means that each person values who the other is and understands — and would never challenge — the other person's boundaries.

Trust. You're talking with a guy from French class and your boyfriend walks by. Does he completely lose his cool or keep walking because he knows you'd never cheat on him? It's OK to get a little jealous sometimes — jealousy is a natural emotion. But how a person reacts when feeling jealous is what matters. There's no way you can have a healthy relationship if you don't trust each other.

Honesty. This one goes hand-in-hand with trust because it's tough to trust someone when one of you isn't being honest. Have you ever caught your girlfriend in a major lie? Like she told you that she had to work on Friday night but it turned out she was at the movies with her friends? The next time she says she has to work, you'll have a lot more trouble believing her and the trust will be on shaky ground. 15

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US † 03.14

R | RELATIONSHIPS Support. It's not just in bad times that your partner should support you. Some people are great when your whole world is falling apart but can't take being there when things are going right (and vice versa). In a healthy relationship, your significant other is there with a shoulder to cry on when you find out your parents are getting divorced and to celebrate with you when you get the lead in a play.

Fairness/Equality. You need to have give-and-take in your relationship, too. Do you take turns choosing which new movie to see? As a couple, do you hang out with your partner's friends as often as you hang out with yours? It's not like you have to keep a running count and make sure things are exactly even, of course. But you'll know if it isn't a pretty fair balance. Things get bad really fast when a relationship turns into a power struggle, with one person fighting to get his or her way all the time.

Separate Identities. In a healthy relationship, everyone needs to make compromises. But that doesn't mean you should feel like you're losing out on being yourself. When you started going out, you both had your own lives (families, friends, interests, hobbies, etc.) and that shouldn't change. Neither of you should have to pretend to like something you don't, or give up seeing your friends, or drop out of activities you love. And you also should feel free to keep developing new talents or interests, making new friends, and moving forward.

Good Communication. You've probably heard lots of stuff about how men and women don't seem to speak the same language. We all know how many different meanings the little phrase "no, nothing's wrong" can have, depending on who's saying it! 16

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US †03.14

17

But what's important is to ask if you're not sure what he or she means, and speak honestly and openly so that the miscommunication is avoided in the first place. Never keep a feeling bottled up because you're afraid it's not what your BF or GF wants to hear or because you worry about sounding silly. And if you need some time to think something through before you're ready to talk about it, the right person will give you some space to do that if you ask for it.

R | RELATIONSHIPS

What's an Unhealthy Relationship? A relationship is unhealthy when it involves mean, disrespectful, controlling, or abusive behavior. Some people live in homes with parents who fight a lot or abuse each other — emotionally, verbally, or physically. For some people who have grown up around this kind of behavior it can almost seem normal or OK. It's not! Many of us learn from watching and imitating the people close to us. So someone who has lived around violent or disrespectful behavior may not have learned how to treat others with kindness and respect or how to expect the same treatment. Qualities like kindness and respect are absolute requirements for a healthy relationship. Someone who doesn't yet have this part down may need to work on it with a trained therapist before he or she is ready for a relationship. Meanwhile, even though you might feel bad or feel for someone who's been mistreated, you need to take care of yourself — it's not healthy to stay in a relationship that involves abusive behavior of any kind.

Warning Signs When a boyfriend or girlfriend uses verbal insults, mean language, nasty putdowns, gets physical by hitting or slapping, or forces someone into sexual activity, it's an important warning sign of verbal, emotional, or physical abuse. 18

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US † 03.14

Ask yourself, does my boyfriend or girlfriend: -get angry when I don't everything for him or her?

R | RELATIONSHIPS

drop

-criticize the way I look or dress, and say I'll never be able to find anyone else who would date me? -keep me from seeing friends or from talking to any other guys or girls? -want me to quit an activity, even though I love it?

-ever raise a hand when angry, like he or she is about to hit me? -try to force me to go further sexually than I want to? These aren't the only questions you can ask yourself. If you can think of any way in which your boyfriend or girlfriend is trying to control you, make you feel bad about yourself, isolate you from the rest of your world, or — this is a big one — harm you physically or sexually, then it's time to get out, fast. Let a trusted friend or family member know what's going on and make sure you're safe. It can be tempting to make excuses or misinterpret violence, possessiveness, or anger as an expression of love. But even if you know that the person hurting you loves you, it is not healthy. No one deserves to be hit, shoved, or forced into anything he or she doesn't want to do.

Why Are Some Relationships So Difficult? Ever heard about how it's hard for someone to love you when you don't love yourself? It's a big relationship roadblock when one or both people struggle with self-esteem problems. Your girlfriend or boyfriend isn't there to make you feel good about yourself if you can't do that on your own. Focus on being happy with yourself, and don't take on the responsibility of worrying about someone else's happiness. 19

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US † 03.14

20

R | RELATIONSHIPS What if you feel that your girlfriend or boyfriend needs too much from you? If the relationship feels like a burden or a drag instead of a joy, it might be time to think about whether it's a healthy match for you. Someone who's not happy or secure may have trouble being a healthy relationship partner. Also, intense relationships can be hard for some teenagers. Some are so focused on their own developing feelings and responsibilities that they don't have the emotional energy it takes to respond to someone else's feelings and needs in a close relationship. Don't worry if you're just not ready yet. You will be, and you can take all the time you need. Ever notice that some teen relationships don't last very long? It's no wonder — you're still growing and changing every day, and it can be tough to put two people together whose identities are both still in the process of forming. You two might seem perfect for each other at first, but that can change. If you try to hold on to the relationship anyway, there's a good chance it will turn sour. Better to part as friends than to stay in something that you've outgrown or that no longer feels right for one or both of you. And before you go looking for amour from that hottie from French class, respect your current beau by breaking things off before you make your move. Relationships can be one of the best — and most challenging — parts of your world. They can be full of fun, romance, excitement, intense feelings, and occasional heartache, too. Whether you're single or in a relationship, remember that it's good to be choosy about who you get close to. If you're still waiting, take your time and get to know plenty of people. 21

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US † 03.14

R | RELATIONSHIPS

Think about the qualities you value in a friendship and see how they match up with the ingredients of a healthy relationship. Work on developing those good qualities in yourself — they make you a lot more attractive to others. And if you're already part of a pair, make sure the relationship you're in brings out the best in both of you.

BLACK ON BLACK! ALWAYS IN STYLE! By: Nina Calloway It became as clear as black and white (and a smidge of navy) to me last fall during last years collections. I was attending a fashion show and while admiring the lines, I looked out the window, mesmerized by the parade of fashion editors. They were prancing past in such a hodgepodge of colors and prints and textures, the effect was almost dizzying. Then I focused back on the show and saw a model, who stood out dressed in black and navy. She looked sleek and confident. And strangely cutting-edge. Strangely because when was the last time that wearing black was considered fashion forward? The answer is now. Some of the most stellar collections this season—Céline, Lanvin, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Narciso Rodriguez—were almost singularly limited to a palette of black and white. Fashion is a cyclical beast by nature, so it makes sense. "There's been such an abundance of color and print for a few seasons, black and white is acting like a palate cleanser," says Sarah Rutson, fashion director of Lane Crawford. In the past few years, prints--helped by new techniques for digitally manipulating and distorting images—have come to the forefront. As a result, designs from Mary Katrantzou to Balenciaga to Proenza Schouler have created memorable fashion moments. 26

FASHION

BLACK ON BLACK! ALWAYS IN STYLE!

Yet for those of us who are more Alexander Calder in our mind-set than, say, Claude Monet, recent seasons have felt somewhat confining. I love prints, but I am keener on the architectural aspects of a piece of clothing, which stand out best when delineated in black and white. While I'm not likely to be seen wearing the midriff-baring cutout looks from Alexander Wang and Balenciaga, I am signing up for the sleeveless tuxedo jackets from CĂŠline and Lanvin. "There is something counterintuitive and slightly shocking about wearing black in warmer months," notes Linda Fargo, a senior vice president at Bergdorf Goodman. I like the idea of dressing against the grain. But I'm also not turning color-blind come spring. I have my eye on a searing-orange sheath from Narciso Rodriguez, because the freshest way to delve into color is in a single intense, traffic-stopping dose. Fargo agrees: "It feels like a new nod to mod when it's done all the way, like at Michael Kors or Gucci." As standout as these colors are, this season you may make more of a statement by going back to black. 27

2014 MERCEDES S CLASS REVIEW By Jeff Holcomb

W

hat's New for 2014

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is an allnew entry-level luxury sedan. It slots in below the C-Class in the Mercedes lineup. PROLIFIC QUARTERLY | MAR 2014

Introduction The all-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class exists for one simple reason: A great many consumers desire the elegance and prestige associated with the Mercedes brand, but simply can't afford the high price of admission. The C-Class sedan has long been the company's entry-level model in the United States, but these days, a nicely equipped one runs well past $40,000. The 2014 CLA-Class marks a departure for the German automaker: It's a front-wheel-drive sedan infused with the premium furnishings of a traditional Mercedes-Benz, but priced far lower than the rear-drive C-Class. The CLA is actually longer and wider than the current C-Class sedan (which is due for a redesign). Its sleek, aerodynamic shape brings to mind the larger CLS four-door "coupe" and Mercedes says that the CLA is more aerodynamic than a Toyota Prius, which should benefit fuel economy. The CLA-Class sedan's curvy roof line does impede on passenger space, however. Anyone over 6 feet tall shouldn't bother trying to get comfortable in the backseat. Of course, the big question surrounding the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class sedan is whether you'll see it as a genuine Mercedes-Benz or a half-hearted budget alternative. The CLA certainly feels like the real thing from the cockpit, as premium materials and a suite of safety and multimedia features check all the boxes for Benzness. With a strong turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a quick-shifting transmission and surefooted handling, the CLA drives like a proper Mercedes, too, though the 2.0-liter engine can sound rough at times. If that's an issue for you, the rip-snorting CLA45 AMG should right most of the base CLA250's wrongs with its incredibly swift straight-line performance. 38

PROLIFIC QUARTERLY | MAR 2014

With the launch of the 2014 CLA-Class, Mercedes brings an early offense to a budding class of compact luxury sedans. The Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series are its closest German rivals, but for the moment neither is offered as a sedan (though both are slated to get a sedan body style in their 2015 redesigns). With a base price around $30,000, though, the CLA is an interesting alternative to a wide range of competitors. The BMW 3 Series and Cadillac ATS are of similar size but cost a great deal more.

The 2014 Acura ILX and Buick Verano cost considerably less, but unless it's equipped with a manual gearbox, the Acura can't keep up with the CLA250 in any contest of speed, while the Buick lacks the Benz's overall interior refinement. The 355horsepower CLA45, on the other hand, has few peers. The BMW 135is offers equivalent performance but only two doors, and if you want something with four doors, you'll have to look at disparate models like the Subaru WRX STI or Chrysler 300C SRT8. Given the selection in this price range, you're wise to shop around before making a decision, but there's no doubt the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is a compelling choice for a compact entry-level luxury sedan.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is available in CLA250 and CLA45 AMG trim levels. The all-wheel-drive CLA250 4Matic arrives later in the model year. The CLA250 comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, cruise control, eight-way power front seats, driver memory settings, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery, a tilt-andtelescoping steering wheel and a 60/40-split-folding rear seat. Electronics features include a 5.8-inch central display, the COMAND interface, mbrace2 telematics/smartphone integration, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a sound system with a CD player. 39

PROLIFIC QUARTERLY | MAR 2014

The CLA45 AMG is equipped similarly but features 4Matic all-wheel drive as standard along with 18-inch wheels, larger brakes and firmer suspension tuning. Both models are eligible for the optional Premium 1 package, which provides autodimming mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats and a Harman Kardon audio system with satellite radio and an iPod interface. The Multimedia package adds a larger 7-inch central infotainment screen with Mercedes' COMAND interface, a rearview camera, a 10-gigabyte music server, a six-disc CD changer and a navigation system with voice commands. Additional safety aids including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, and blind spot warning are available via the Driver Assistance package. The Sport package for the CLA250 adds 18-inch wheels, a more aggressive-looking front fascia and grille, and upgraded brakes. Stand-alone options for both models include summer performance tires, bi-xenon headlamps, a rear spoiler, a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, heated seats, wood interior trim, a lower-cost navigation system for cars with the standard 5.8-inch display, and parking sensors combined with an automated parking system. Exclusive options for the CLA45 include 19-inch wheels, interior and exterior carbon fiber trim, sport seats, an AMG steering wheel and red-painted brake calipers.

Power trains and Performance The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 208 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automated manual transmission (with shift paddles) routes power to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive is available on the CLA250 4Matic. A front-drive CLA250 takes 6.7 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60 mph, according to Mercedes. 40

PROLIFIC QUARTERLY | MAR 2014

2014 MERCEDES S CLASS The CLA45 AMG has an upgraded version of this 2.0-liter engine that features a twinscroll turbocharger and fortified internal components. The result is an amazing 355 hp and 332 lb-ft. A quicker-shifting version of the seven-speed transmission drives all four wheels through the 4Matic AWD system. Launch control is also included. The CLA45 AMG will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 4.5 seconds. Both the CLA250 and CLA45 AMG feature an automatic stop-start function that turns off the engine when the car stops to save fuel.

Safety The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock brakes, a driver knee airbag, front seat side thorax airbags, front seat side pelvic airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. The CLA45 AMG has a three-mode stability control system that allows drivers to tailor the level of intervention. Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 emergency telematics is standard, as are Collision Prevention Assist, which uses radar to identify potential collision situations and intervenes with braking as necessary, and Attention Assist, which monitors the driver for signs of drowsiness and inattention. Rear seat side airbags are optional. Other safety-oriented options include a rearview camera, parking sensors bundled with an automated parking system and the Lane Tracking package, which adds a blind-spot warning system and a lane-departure warning system.

Interior Design and Special Features Even though this is the bargain Benz, the CLA-Class sedan's interior largely escapes the cost-cutting knife. Quite simply, the cabin looks and feels like a traditional Mercedes. Big analog gauges, a clean center stack design, and tight fit and finish impart the same classic, premium feel shared across the Mercedes lineup. One of the few exceptions is the optional navigation system's display, which looks like an aftermarket addition as it's perched high on the dash. On the upside, the screen is easy to read. It also takes some time to get used to selecting gears with a columnmounted stalk rather than a traditional console shifter. Various trim options, including walnut, ash, aluminum and carbon fiber (CLA45 only) allow you to create a cabin aesthetic that's either cool and modern, or classic and refined. 41

PROLIFIC QUARTERLY | MAR 2014

2014 MERCEDES S CLASS Unfortunately, the CLA's rear quarters aren't nearly as luxurious. Although the rear seats are well-shaped and supportive, the sloping roof line that gives the CLA its distinctive character also translates to tight headroom for 6-footers, and the knee room situation isn't much better. Small rear doors make it tough to get little ones in and out of their car seats, too.

The trunk doesn't look very large, but since the CLA sedan is longer and wider than the current C-Class, it offers a respectable 13.1 cubic feet of trunk capacity.

Driving Impressions Most consumers will find the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 quite agreeable to drive on their daily commutes. Even if you've owned rear-wheel-drive Mercedes sedans in the past, you'll be hard-pressed to tell that the CLA250 is front-wheel drive, as it accelerates and steers with the precision of more elite Benz models. Ride quality is on the firm side, but it's not uncomfortable. Part of the CLA's athletic character comes from the quickshifting automated manual transmission, which offers three driver-adjustable shift patterns and a manual shift mode via its steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. At highway speeds, the CLA's aerodynamic shape helps neutralize wind noise, but it can't muffle the four-cylinder engine's occasional diesel-like clatter or the exhaust system's wheezy rasp when you're accelerating hard. These are among the few unfortunate reminders that you're driving an entry-level Mercedes-Benz. Meanwhile, the 355-hp CLA45 AMG is far from a base Benz. In addition to its sizzling acceleration, the CLA45 has plenty of personality. Select Sport mode and you'll hear crackles and pops from the exhaust during downshifts. Around turns, the CLA45 isn't quite as sharp as the typical high-performance four-cylinder all-wheel-drive rally car like Mitsubishi's Evolution. But there's still a huge amount of grip available, giving the driver supreme confidence when exploring the CLA45's limits.

Dynasty: I want to perform on the BET Cypher at the BET Hip Hop Awards. That is one of my current goals.

DYNASTY’S FAVORITE TYPE OF MUSIC IS SOUL.

Prolific: When did you first start singing?

Dynasty: I first started rhyming when I was a kid, around age 12. I was a bit of a tomboy and my friends were into it, so I started trying it out.

Prolific: Who are your musical inspirations?

Dynasty: I am inspired by artists who are true to themselves such as Lauryn Hill, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, India Arie, Mos Def and more.

Prolific: What kind of music do you listen to today?

Dynasty: I listen to all types of music but my favorite is soul music.

Prolific:

What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player?

Dynasty: LoL nothing embarrassing but it would just be so random. So track one might be Biggie Smalls, the next might be Celine Dion, then you may hear Otis Redding, Wu Tang followed by Donnie McClurkin!

Prolific: Where would you most perform?

like

to

you most like to open for?

Dynasty: I've opened for some pretty cool people including Talib Kweli and Erykah Badu. I would love to open for Common, Kendrick Lamar, Jill Scott or India Arie to name a few.

Prolific: If you weren't singing, what would you be doing?

Dynasty:

Definitely something artistic. Probably acting. I actually have an acting degree. Looking forward to getting back into it one day.

Prolific: Do you play any instruments?

Dynasty: I played the piano from age 4-16. At 16, my grandma made my lessons optional and I quit. I really regret it. But I can still play if I start practicing again.

Prolific: What Genre of music do you do?

Dynasty: Hip-hop/soul. 46

W

ill Kevin Durant Be The 2014 NBA MVP?

It will take something special for someone to knock LeBron James off his MVP throne. Something so dominant that it takes a second or third viewing just to confirm its existence. MVP campaigns aren't completed in one night, but they do feature signature moments like this. This might have been KD's finest work to date, but he's been designing museum-quality stat sheets all season. Box-score brilliance is only part of the curriculum. A true MVP candidate has to be an irreplaceable piece of a championship-caliber picture. No matter which hardware test, though, KD's passing it with flying colors.

Statistical Brilliance Whenever you send numbers crunchers running to the history books, you must be doing something right. Durant's been doing that to the extreme. The only time stat geeks have raised their heads is when they've had to come up for air. KD just became the founding member of the 50-point club for the third consecutive season. As far as scoring is concerned, the company he joined in doing so doesn't get any more elite: 53

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US MARCH 2014

54

Crazier still is the fact that's not the only possible link between Durant, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. Durant (30.6 points, 30.1 player efficiency rating, 10.0 win shares through 40 games) is on pace to become the only player other than those Hall of Famers with 30-plus points, a 30-plus PER and 20-plus win shares in the same season. That's historically remarkable, yet in a way not that surprising. He's even documented as one of the greatest scorers of all time for a while now. Yet he's shattering his already lofty standards this season. It seems as if a fourth scoring title is simply a formality for the 25-year-old. The separation he's creating in the scoring race has been unseen in more than 20 years:

It has to be the byproduct of his offensive volume though, right? After all, it was his shot totals that James singled out while daydreaming about an expanded scoring role. KD isn't hurting for touches (19.7 field-goal attempts per game). But he's not the league's most active shooter (Carmelo Anthony, 21.0). He's not even No. 2 (LaMarcus Aldridge, 20.9). Still, even if he was at the top of the list, who'd be complaining? He's been making more out of his shots than anyone else in the league. Just look at the league's top-five scorers and their different levels of efficiency. 55

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US MARCH 2014

56

"All of the fancy numbers are fine," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said, via NBA’s Sekou Smith. "But you have to impact the game. You have to leave a footprint out there night after night." That means consistently making smart plays, never taking a night off and always searching for improvements. Sometimes, like when you lose an allworld point guard (Russell Westbrook) to his third knee surgery of the last 12 months, you have to literally carry your team in a way the league hasn't seen for five years.

KD's a dominant scorer, but he's so much more than that. He keeps figuring out how to make the most out of his length, and his evolution as a playmaker remains a crucial but overlooked part of his story. His assists have climbed to a new career high (5.0), and his turnovers are down to a three-year low (3.2). Take the whole body of work and you're left with yet another possible entry into the history books. Neither the old-school voters nor advanced-stats gurus could pick a hole in his stat lines.

The Western Conference should be too crowded for OKC to survive Westbrook's absence. The Thunder understandably struggled after Westbrook went back under the knife in late December. They're still just 7-5 since he went down, but they've won two consecutive games—both by double digits, both over Western Conference contenders (Houston Rockets, Warriors). If Westbrook's injury exposed OKC's vulnerability, no one else has been able to do anything with it. The Thunder (30-10) still have the fourth-best record in the league and are the No. 3 seed out West.

Championship Ceiling

Only the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs have a better net rating than OKC's plus-7.9 points per 100 possessions.

None of his numbers matter on their own, though. There isn't a statistical category that can compensate for an underwhelming win column.

The Thunder have held a plus-5.4 mark in these 12 games without Westbrook, which would still be seventh-best in the league. 57

PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US MARCH 2014

Surveying the MVP Race Durant owns the Association's best stat sheet right now. James still turns heads with his 58.6 field-goal percentage, but KD has better shooting marks in other categories. Not to mention, he's leading in rebounds (7.9 to 6.7), steals (1.5 to 1.3), blocks (0.8 to 0.3) and PER (30.1 to 29.0). Even the King's lead in assists is smaller than you'd think (6.6 to 5.0). There are other candidates who will be mentioned along the way— LaMarcus Aldridge, Paul George, Stephen Curry—but this is absolutely a two-man race. And it's a race Durant is currently winning.

Why does this matter to Durant? For one, MVP winners don't come from bad teams. Over the last 10 seasons, the teams that employ the league's MVP have a combined record of 599-205. That's a .745 winning percentage. Durant's Thunder are one of the four teams currently clearing that mark. Second, this team would collapse without KD. There may not be a less productive starting shooting guard-center combo in the league than Thabo Sefolosha (6.2 points, 39.3 percent shooting) and Kendrick Perkins (3.3 points, 45.7). Serge Ibaka still caps his impact with a lack of consistent aggressiveness (11.8 shots per game). PROLIFICQUARTERLY.US MARCH 2014

B/R's Grant Hughes called KD "a slight favorite" in his last round of NBA MVP odds, published on Jan. 6. Durant has averaged 39.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in his six games since. The gap is widening. We all know James is capable of making tremendous strides, though. Perhaps it's no coincidence that KD's MVP climb has coincided with Miami's annual midseason malaise. If the Heat find their running shoes like they usually do, James could stay on top of the MVP perch he's held for four of the last five seasons. Assuming KD doesn't sprint out to an insurmountable lead, of course. JEFF HOLCOMB is a PROLIFIC QUARTERLY correspondent

HOUSING

The Housing Outlook for 2014 By: Nicola Ruiz The strength of the housing recovery was a welcome surprise this year. If forecasters are correct, the sector is finally ready to start picking up the rest of the economy in 2014.

That's because the market is changing in important ways. Experts like Jed Kolko, chief economist at real-estate website Trulia, expect the mix of buyers in the coming year to shift to a combination of families moving up or buying their first homes—rather than the cash-only investors who have been driving sales in many cities. Mortgage rates, which declined to historically low levels earlier this year, should continue to tick up. The Federal Reserve said last week that it would start pulling back on a bond-buying program that has helped keep a lid on long-term rates. And home supply and demand are finally in a balance that should encourage building. Add it all up and it means a market that's less confusing than it was over the past few years, when prices tanked then shot back up as inventory thinned out. But it may also be less robust. Here are three predictions economists are making about the housing market for the next year:

Home prices did hit the ignition button in 2013. Don't expect such a meteoric rise in 2014 is what professionals are predicting! PROLIFIC QUARTERLY · MARCH 2014

60

HOUSING

National home prices have risen between 5% and 13% over the past year, depending on which price index is used. White-hot markets in the West have seen home prices rise as much as 25%. Economists say such heady gains aren't happening again.

Stan Humphries, chief economist at real-estate site Zillow, is predicting his company's national home-price index will rise by 3% in 2014, versus 5.2% over the past year through October. A Zillow survey of 110 economists in the fourth quarter of this year found an average forecast of a 4.3% gain for next year. As a point of caution, the consensus opinion on housing has underestimated the market on the upside and downside throughout the recovery. The real-estate market has been more volatile over the past few years than in any postwar period, and Mr. Humphries notes that much would have to go right for his forecast to bear out. Indeed, many experts have predicated their forecasts for modest price gains on interest rates rising and buyer competition thinning out. The inventory of distressed sales like foreclosures and short sales is in decline, so the bargains are mostly gone. Sales of new and existing homes have slowed since summer's end. The pace of further interest-rate increases in 2014—and the market's ability to digest those—will play a major role in validating the recovery that began two years ago.

Mortgages may become easier to get. But they will also be more expensive. Mortgage rates are set to end 2013 more than a full percentage point above year-ago levels, and many economists see them rising further in 2014 as the Fed continues to slow the bondbuying program that had pushed rates to record lows. Mr. Humphries says it's "pretty much a sure thing" that mortgage rates will move above 5% amid an expanding economy and the withdrawal of the Fed stimulus. Some economists also think mortgages should slowly become easier to get, though not in a dramatic way. Banks and mortgage lenders are facing big declines in volumes and profits as refinancing opportunities fade amid higher rates, which means competition to make loans to home buyers should increase. Rising home prices and falling mortgage delinquencies should also give lenders and mortgage-insurance companies more confidence. The caution is that banks also have to digest a new cocktail of mortgage regulations set to come into force next month, and many big banks still face potential legal settlements over crisis-era mortgages that defaulted. Both of those forces could sap lenders' appetites to make the credit box meaningfully wider to all but the most qualified borrowers. 61

PROLIFIC QUARTERLY · MARCH 2014

HOUSING

Construction will finally boost overall growth. Despite the recovery in home prices, building activity has remained depressed—a factor that has kept the economy from firing on all cylinders. Now that housing inventory has been whittled down, however, builders are becoming more confident about breaking ground. At the same time, household formation should improve along with the steady gains in the job market, adding to the already-high demand for new homes and apartments. Housing starts were running at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.09 million in November, up from a recessionary low of 554,000 in 2009 but still well below the 1.6 million average from 1995 to 2004—before the peak of the housing boom. This muted pace reflects a cautious outlook from home builders who have had to contend with low household formation and an overhang of cheap existing homes whose prices they couldn't compete with until recently. Housing inventory bottomed in 2013, and higher prices have made it easier for builders to profitably sell new homes. Forecasting firm IHS Global Insight is projecting construction starts to rise to 1.1 million next year, while real-estate research firm Zelman & Associates is predicting about the same. After a wild ride, housing is set to become more normal this coming year. That means homes will be less affordable, but it puts the sector back in line for a more healthy and measured pace of growth. 62

Alexx Mikayla Height: 5‘5 Weight: 85lbs Bust: 30 Waist: 23 Hips: 28 It had just occurred to me before meeting this model that she works with our parent company Prolific Worldwide. As we spoke the innocence of Alexx was a breath of fresh air. Remembering when we all had dreams and aspirations and the belief with-in to obtain goals‌ is a part of life for this young lady. Sit back and relax as you will enjoy this interview and a fresh new Model on the rise.

Prolific: What is your current Profession?

Alexx: Right now I work at BJ's Brewhouse and Restaurant as a hostess, a student at St.Pete Community College and a Model.

Alexx: I am currently in Prolific: Who is your a relationship and couldn't imagine being any happier. We've been together for over a year now and he treats me like I'm the only girl in the world. He makes me feel beautiful and wanted. I love it! :)

Favorite Actor?

Alexx: Hmmm. I'd have to say that my favorite actor/actress is Amber Heard. She has this classic beauty to her and whenever I see her on screen something just pulls me in and lets me forget about the outside world.

Prolific: What is your Favorite Movie?

76

Alexx Mikayla Alexx: I'm thinking about it and I really don't have a favorite movie, but the first one that comes into mind is this movie Disconnect that I recently saw. It's really intense and it just left me with my jaw hanging.

Prolific: What is your Favorite Go-to karaoke song?

Alexx: Karaoke... I don't do it... I would much rather hear the original artist over me attempting.

Prolific: What was your First Job and what was that experience like?

Alexx: My first job was at the clothing store Rue 21 and I worked there for two very long years. It wasn't much of an experience. Probably the only thing I gained from it was I'm now able to fold clothes like a pro.

Prolific:

Do you have any Piercings/Tattoos (How many? Where?)

Alexx: Piercings! Yes! I love them. I have my ears (one set at the bottom, and my cartilage done once on my left ear) and my nose is also pierced. I use to have my nose pierced twice, right next to each other, but the newer one closed up since I can't have the ring in at work. I also have a set of microdermales on my hips and a tattoo of a dandelion transitioning into birds on my back right shoulder. So I guess you can say I am a Piercing Lover. 77

PROLIFIC | QUARTERLY _ 03.14

Alexx Mikayla Prolific: What fun fact, talent, or mutant superpower of yours should guys know about?

Alexx: This is going to sound kind of lame and cheesy, but I have the power of making people smile and putting them in a good mood almost instantly. I'm also maybe a little too good at sarcasm, so when I get comfortable with people they have to almost relearn my sense of humor. I like it though as it creates good memories and funny stories.

Prolific: What's the most memorable pick up line you've ever heard?

Alexx: I started laughing just thinking about it. I can actually quote it perfectly and word for word because I still have a picture of the text from the girl that sent it to my friend. Alright, here it goes: "HEYYYY, If you were a transformer, you'd be a HOT-obot, and your name would be Optimus Fine. How are you?" I'm not even really into Transformers, but I thought it was pretty great.

Prolific: What's the craziest thing

Alexx: I take lying very seriously. It's something I don't do and am easily hurt by it. I find I really don’t like lying because since I don’t lie it is something I totally have no understanding on why people do it.

Prolific: What do you feel most comfortable wearing?

you've ever done?

Alexx: Sweatpants and a loose tank top

Alexx: I honestly haven't done anything

or v-neck. So whenever I'm at home or having an off day this is what you will catch me in.

too crazy. I don't have those normal high school stories that usually everyone has one of. I've always been focused on school and work. I just realized how lame that sounds but it's fine though. I like what I do. I'm proud of myself.

Prolific: Have you ever lied to get something your way? What was it?

Prolific: Recent Modeling Jobs? Alexx:

I have shot with the wonderful Blake Cortes and another for a college clothing brand with Vanessa at RudeGirlPhotos. Stay tuned as you will see a lot more of this girl! 78

PROLIFIC | QUARTERLY _ 03.14

Alexx Mikayla Prolific: Most Memorable Modeling Job?

Alexx: My most memorable shoot has probably got to be my very first one. I decided to do a shoot for a project for my English class my junior year of high school. The shoot was with Amber Weil at R.A.W. Photography. It was at this cemetery in the historic district of St. Pete, representing Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. I got to wear this vintage wedding dress and it was just all good vibes.

ISTHERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY? ----------------------Hopefully a lot. I'm a really hard worker and modeling is something that I love. I think I could help promote modeling the right way in showing other girls interested that you just need to be comfortable with the who you are and learn to love you for you.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK Alexx Mikayla for taking time and speaking to us. This fresh new model has some big upcoming projects coming up and we are proud to say we are working with her. Stay tuned and look for her at:

FINANCIAL | FORBES TOP 5 BILLIONAIRES

1. Carlos Slim Helu

2. Bill Gates

Carlos Slim is the wealthiest man in Mexico (and in the world as of 2013). He retained this spot after having been named the number one billionaire last year. Most of his fortune comes from his investments in the telecom industry. However, Carlos also owns companies in the mining, real estate, financial and industrial sectors. At the age of 73, the net worth of Carlos Slim this year stands at a staggering $73 billion. It seems his 2012 investments in Mexico’s Leon and Pachuca clubs as well as Spain’s Real Oviedo have done quite well.

Bill Gates holds the title of the second richest man in the world. He comes in a close second after Carlos Slim. His estimated net worth in 2013 was $67 billion. The Microsoft founder is still the chairman of his biggest company. Bill Gates has been involved in various philanthropic endeavors in the recent past. He has donated to date more than $28 million to the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation. In addition, he has been very active in urging his fellow billionaires to donate to charity. In April, Gates pledged to secure $355 million to eradicate polio. Despite all these philanthropic endeavors, he comes in at second place on the Forbes list of wealthiest individuals globally.

3. Amancio Ortega

4. Warren Buffet

5. Larry Ellison

Spain’s Amancio Ortega is best known for being the founding father of the Zara brand. He possesses more than 60% of the company’s shares. A good deal of his wealth though also comes from real estate investments. Ortega made capitalized in property ownership during the 2008 global financial downturn. He owns several buildings in Spain, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and London. This year, he is the biggest gainer with a net worth of $57 billion. He travels to third place among the world’s richest people.

Warren has a net worth of $53 billion as of 2013. This has earned him fourth place among the world’s wealthiest persons. This is despite having gone through expensive treatments for prostate cancer, and donating $2 billion to the Gates Foundation in July. However, the 83 year old has been doing some huge business deals. A subsidiary of his Berkshire Company is ready to buy Nevada’s NV Energy for $5.6 billion. In addition, Buffet bought the famous ketchup maker, H.J. Heinz, with 3G capital at a cost of $23.2 billion.

Larry Ellison is the third richest man in the US and ranked as the fifth multimillionaire in the world. He founded Oracle and owns multiple residential properties on Malibu’s Carbon Beach. A fun fact is Larry also owns almost all of Hawaii’s Lanai Island. I guess he can call that home also. He is always a step ahead of all his competition. And continues to be revolutionary. Larry Ellison’s net worth in 2013 was recorded at $43 billion.
