Real Estate Healthcare & Your 2013 Taxes Some Surprises Waiting for You? Longtime Southport resident Frank Gallinelli shares an opinion piece on upcoming 'surprises lurking in your federal taxes.' Champagne, funny hats, and the ball-drop in Times Square might not be the only significant events to mark the New Year in 2013. If you are a real estate investor or a home-seller, you could have a couple of surprises lurking in your federal taxes.

T

he Medicare Tax

One of those surprises found its way into the Health Care and Reconciliation Act of 2010 at the last minute. If, as the the National Association of Realtors® states, it was added to the legislation at the last minute, then one has to wonder just how carefully our elected officials studied this before passing it.

W

hat It Is Not

There has been a lot of talk and many email blasts, claiming that this is a sales tax on real estate. It is not. It doesn’t apply to every real estate transaction, and it doesn’t get tacked on at the point of sale, the way a sales tax would. That much is clear. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

W

hat It Is, Sort Of

The details may seem a bit daunting, but let’s try to summarize: It is a 3.8% surtax on “net investment income,” which appears to include rental income, capital gains on the sale of investments (and to a limited extent on the sale of a personal residence), interest, dividends, royalties, and annuities, all net of the expenses to achieve that income. It does not apply to withdrawals from IRAs and 401ks, or from veterans benefit, lifeinsurance proceeds and several other types of income. (For a further discussion, see this article in Forbes.) But wait, it can actually get even more complicated. According to an article in SmartMoney, there is an exception for income from sources that come from business activities. Presumably this would mean that if you derive your livelihood solely from operating rental property or from flipping houses then your rental income or capital gain from those activities is business- and not investment-related; hence it doesn’t go into the bucket of items subject to the Medicare surtax. But that same article notes an “exception to the exception” if the income is from a “passive business activity.” It will never apply (should we ever say never?) if your adjusted gross income is less than $200,000 as an individual or $250,000 for a married couple filing jointly. Fire up your spreadsheet now, because there is a further test: The tax applies to the lesser of your total net investment income or the excess of your Modified Adjusted Gross Income over the $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (joint return) thresholds. (MAGI is the same as AGI for most taxpayers.) Keep in mind a couple of potential “gotchas” in regard to these thresholds. Even though your conventional (not Roth) IRA or 401k withdrawal is not considered investment income for the purpose of this law, it’s still income and could potentially push you over the threshold. Likewise, the gain from the sale of an investment property could catapult you over the line. If you are selling your personal residence, you will continue to get the $250,000 exclusion for individuals, or $500,000 for a married couples filing jointly, so it is only your gain over that amount that is in play. As before you still have to pay the capital gains tax on your profit in excess of those exclusions. More about capital gains in a moment. Congress did not learn its lesson from the Alternative Minimum Tax debacle, because there does not appear to be any provision to index the threshold amounts for inflation, so the tax may affect more people as time goes on. For more information about this tax, you can refer to the articles noted above as well as a PDF summary put out by the National Association of Realtors® www.ProlificWorlwide.com

C

apital Gains and the Fiscal Cliff

Another sobering New Year’s Day adventure is what is being called the “fiscal cliff.” Part of the wild ride into the abyss is the scheduled expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts on January 1, 2013. Here, in brief, is what it means for those of us in real estate: If you sell your real estate investment property for a profit, that profit is taxed at the capital gains rate. Currently that capital gains tax rate is 15%, but if we go over the fiscal cliff on January 1, 2013, the rate will go to 20% with the potential to add the 3.8% Medicare tax to part of the gain. If you sell your home for a profit and if you have a gain that exceeds the $250,000 or $500,000 exclusion (not an unrealistic possibility, especially for older homeowners who bought several decades ago – especially in what are now the more costly markets on the coasts like Fairfield County, Connecticut where I live) you may be faced with a similarly higher tax on that gain. The cliff notwithstanding, the Senate narrowly passed a Democratic-sponsored bill last summer, which did not achieve Congressional agreement but which did include a 20% capital gain rate.

T

he Bottom Line

I believe the significance of the Medicare tax may be not so much the money it raises -probably not very much -- but rather in the anti-investor mindset it reveals. The same would seem to underlie the proposals to raise the capital gains tax. Both taxes suggest to me a policy that puts investing and risk-taking in the crosshairs, that seeks to discourage rather than encourage the activities that are essential to making an economy grow. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

COMING JULY 2013 MODEL CHANTEL CHERRY

www.ProlificWorldwide.com

This writer shares the opinion of many that higher tax rates on capital gains are a bad idea generally, and a terrible idea during a struggling economy. Existing businesses need capital to grow and startups need capital to launch. If our tax structure is changed to impose a disincentive to invest, then we shouldn’t be surprised to see our economy shrink even further. This WSJ article says it well. Those who invest and who see investing as vital to our society need to keep careful watch on every new tax proposal and to keep ourselves in the conversation about those proposals. And as this Wall Street Journal article put it: “If you’re planning to sell rental real estate or other investment property, run, don’t walk, to a trusted tax expert.” –Frank Gallinelli

KIRK FRANKLIN Antonio Maurice Daniels Kirk Franklin has been able to produce a new form of gospel music that offers strong implications for a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-vocal democratic community. His music has often been played in nightclubs and churches; his influence has enabled members of the religious community and hip-hop community to come together to appreciate the art that emanates from their respective communities. Franklin’s music and unique prowess have granted renowned secular artists opportunities to sing and perform in sacred places, and have made it possible for those only tied to the secular community to experience sacred music. Of course, a communal sharing of sacred and secular music means a sharing of values, leading to a greater respect of their respective values. Mr. Franklin’s music–and what he has done to unite people from sundry walks of life–serves as a powerful example of how he and his music can help to promote a beloved national and global community. He has evinced a deep commitment to defying the status quo in gospel music, and not simply for the sake of challenging the status quo. He has a higher purpose: True unity and diversity.

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

62

KdB One classic example of Franklin’s ability to promote authentic unity and diversity is demonstrated through his gospel song and accompanying music video “Lean on Me,” Franklin’s interpretation of the Bill Withers classic featuring R. Kelly, Mary J. Blige, Crystal Lewis and Bono. As one can see from the music video, African Americans are signing in unison with a white woman and an Irish man. One also has the opportunity to see black and white female and male children and adults working together to convey a collaborative message in the beginning of the music video. With the exception of Kirk Franklin, Crystal Lewis, and the choir, none of the artists singing on this track are gospel music artists. Franklin selected these artists not only for their superior vocal talent, but also to show the power of gospel music to shatter unnecessary barriers and borders existing between members of religious and secular communities. The music video offers us a visual example of how we can accomplish prodigious things when we don’t allow race and ethnicity to stand in the way. Another classic example of a gospel song and accompanying music video that reveal how Franklin’s art advances true unity and diversity is “Stomp.” As the music video unveils, Franklin has people dancing and singing in a similar way one would see people dancing at nightclubs. Rapper Salt of the rap duo Salt and Pepper also appears on this track. This song and music video display Mr. Franklin’s ingenious construction of hip-hiporiented gospel music.

The music video offers us a visual example of how we can accomplish prodigious things when we don’t allow race and ethnicity to stand in the way.

In 1992, Franklin organized "The Family", which is a seventeenvoice choir, formed from neighborhood friends and associates. In 1992, Vicki MackLataillade, the co-founder of fledgling record label GospoCentric, heard one of their demo tapes and was so impressed she immediately signed up Kirk & The Family to a recording contract.

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

63

KdB

“Stomp” communicates an essential message that Christians do not have a monopoly on religious worship. It illustrates that gospel music at its best is inclusive of everyone. From “Stomp's beginning lines, Franklin makes it clear that he’s not concerned with negative critiques about him becoming too radical in the way he engenders gospel music. If we look critically at Kirk Franklin’s creation of hip-hop-oriented gospel music, we can learn much about how not only to create more unified religious and secular communities, but also how to move closer toward a national and global beloved community. At the heart of Franklin’s art is an effort to draw from as many art forms and individuals as possible to deliver inspiring gospel music. Mr. Franklin provides the global community with a serious framework for achieving true diversity and unity. –Antonio Maurice Daniels Antonio Maurice Daniels is a Research Associate and Ph.D. student in Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis (ELPA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He blogs regularly for his cultural commentary blog, Revolutionary Paideia. His works have been featured widely in academic publications and for popular online publications, including The Fresh Xpress, Mused Magazine, Up 4 Discussion, From Ashy to Classy, The Black Man Can, Healthy Black Men Magazine. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

GINA CEE

POP SENSATION THAT IS A STAR IN THE RISING AND IS MAKING UPWARD MOVES. BY JACQUELYN BRYANT PHOTGRAPHS BY CINDY LINVILLE

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

67

JACKIE: So when did you first start singing? GINA CEE: When I was young I was over weight and had very low self esteem. I started singing when I was very young. But because of my weight and low self esteem I did not have the confidence to go solo until I lost weight at age 16. I have been recording professionally now for three (3) years. JACKIE: What did your family do to encourage you? GINA CEE: My family did not do anything to encourage me. As a matter of fact they did everything they could to discourage me away from music. And of course now that I have had some successes in my Music they want to take credit for my career taking off. JACKIE: Who else in your family sings? GINA CEE: I can say I probably got my voice from my Mother. My Mom would sing around the house when I was young and I can remember thinking, "wow Mom can sing". Ironically, the only time I got to hear my Mom's pretty voice sing around the house was when she was upset.

JACKIE: Who are your musical inspirations? GINA CEE: I am inspired by Artists who have been successful at managing the business side of their career. Artist like Mariah Carey, who has been outstanding at reinventing herself as well as sings beautifully. Rihanna and Justin Timberlake have been successful at managing their careers and reinventing themselves to an entirely different level. JACKIE: What kind of music do you listen to today? GINA CEE: I keep the playlist in my mp3 player down to no more than 20 songs at a time. I like all kinds of music (mostly Pop) and I keep my playlist down to 90 minute sets. And I delete and modify it every two (2) months. I am not one of those people who has 700 and 1000 songs on my playlist. I could never listen to them all.

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

70

JACKIE: What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player? GINA CEE: I don't keep anything that I am embarrassed about on my MP3 player. But the one song that stays no matter how often I modify my playlist would have to be, "Bees in the Trap". I love to workout to that song. JACKIE: Where would you most like to perform? GINA CEE: I live in Las Vegas, so that would have to be anywhere on the Strip of Las Vegas. It is amazing the pay for performing on the Strip can run as much as $ 7 million a set. JACKIE: Who would you most like to open for? GINA CEE: I love Jennifer Lopez. I would love to be a fly on the wall, because she came from humble beginnings and is an icon. I identify with her because she is 45 and in great shape and has worked hard to stay that way. She also has a booty like me and us booty girls have to stick together. I would be honored to open for her. JACKIE: If you weren't singing, what would you be doing? GINA CEE: I did Retail Management for a while and found out that I was good at motivating people and getting them pumped up to want to work. I can also be nick picky and direct, yet do it with a smile. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

72

JACKIE: Do you play any instruments? GINA CEE: No I don't play any instruments.

JACKIE: What Genre of music do you do? GINA CEE: I would describe my genre of music as Mainstream. Which at times is also classified as Pop, Dance Music or House Music. JACKIE: If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be? GINA CEE: I used to sing R&B at the beginning of my career in Tampa. But that genre is so saturated. And you have allot of good Artist who can sing that genre of music very well. I enjoy Pop because it transforms onto so many other genres of music which makes it more Universal. JACKIE: What genre of music can't you stand to listen to? GINA CEE: It is annoying to me that there are Forty (40) FM Radio Stations in Las Vegas, but 38 of them are Spanish FM Music Stations. That leaves little room for new Artist in my genre of music to get heard on the Radio. JACKIE: What hidden talents do you have? GINA CEE: I enjoy weight training and I can squat smith 350 pounds. Which some guys have a hard time lifting that amount of weight. So I am very proud of myself.

JACKIE: Do you enjoy writing music and/or lyrics? GINA CEE: Yes I write my own songs. As a matter of fact I began writing songs before I became a singer. This had to do with my low self esteem because of my weight. I was uncomfortable to perform in front of others because they may judge me on how I looked. So I used my writing as a way to express her thoughts to others and to cleanse myself. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

73

JACKIE: Any celeb crushes? GINA CEE: Yes I used to like Michael Vick but then when the Kardashions came out I fell in love with Reggie Bush. Now I think I just like good looking football players. JACKIE: Fave color? GINA CEE: My favorite color is Purple. Purple is a regal color which represents royalty. Which is a connection to my name Gina which means queen or to make her feel like she is worth something. JACKIE: Best advice ever given? GINA CEE: The best advice that was every given to me was by a friend of mine, who is a fellow Artist who had a somewhat successful career between Tampa and Los Angeles, who told me to always know that "I am a big fish in a small pond". So when I go to a bigger pond, I am still a big fish. So I always project myself as wanting to be a Coy fish. Which is a pretty big fish. JACKIE: First song you ever sung? GINA CEE: This is easy because when I was three (3) years old every time my Mom gave me a bath I would sing "She Drives Me Crazy" by The Fine Young Cannibals. And I used to drive my father crazy singing it. LOL

JACKIE: Secret craving? GINA CEE: My secret craving is getting up in the middle of the night and eating Powdered Peanut Butter. I is so good and I just love it. JACKIE: Fave food? GINA CEE: My favorite food is Asparagus.

2013 Nissan Sentra VITAL STATS

(Credit: Wayne Cunningham/CNET)) As the 2013 Nissan Sentra’s weight shifted dramatically for the umpteenth time on a winding California road during Nissan’s press introduction of the newest generation of its compact car, I realized this type of driving was exactly what the 2013 Sentra was not made for. Driving along the very urban streets of downtown San Francisco, cruising across the Golden Gate Bridge, and sailing along the freeway, the car did fine. Its suspension felt firm yet pliable, rolling along the road with no unpleasant jolts. But when it came to my attempt to turn a California back road into my own personal racetrack, the Sentra’s handling was just not up to the task. The car did not sway, instead exhibiting a feeling of the entire weight shifting about a foot to the side for each turn. And the breakfast I had eaten earlier began to raise its own objections about being shoved from side to side. Nissan offers the new Sentra in four trims: S, SV, SR, and SL. The base S model comes in at an inexpensive $15,990, and gets a six-speed manual transmission. All other Sentras use a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and Nissan’s version of this type of transmission is the best in the business. For the new Sentra, Nissan refined its CVT, adding a planetary gearbox that has the effect of putting fixed gears at the high and low ends of the drive ratio. And Nissan says the breadth of the CVT’s drive ratio, at 7.3:1, matches that of a typical seven-speed automatic transmission. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

Engine: 1.8L I4 Power: 130 HP / 128 LB-FT Transmission: CVT

Drivetrain: Front-Wheel Drive Curb Weight: 2,851 LBS Seating: 2+3 Cargo: 15.1 CU-FT MPG: 30 City / 39 HWY MSRP: $23,420 (as tested 79

The CVT showed excellent programming during my day of driving, kicking the engine speed up substantially when I hit the brakes so I would not be left wanting power as the car slowed. Nissan does not include any virtual shift points on the Sentra’s CVT, just a Low range to complement Drive. At cruising speed on the freeway, the CVT let the engine run just under 2,000 rpm. Under heavy acceleration, the CVT was willing to let the engine run up to redline, maximizing power. Tortured groan of acceleration However, the 1.8-liter engine, used at each trim level, does not have that much power to give. It delivers 130 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque, adequate for most daily driving but a little short on oomph for passing on a two-lane highway. In one such situation I remained content to follow traffic going about 5 mph under the limit because the Sentra did not inspire enough confidence to attempt a pass. Flooring the accelerator also wrings an unpleasant tortured groan from the engine.

Nissan applies variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust cams of this engine, but it does not employ direct injection, which would get a bit more efficiency out of it. That technology exists in Nissan’s toolbox. Witness the Juke, which churns out 188 horsepower from a turbocharged, direct injection 1.6-liter engine. It would be nice to see Nissan standardize around that mill for its small cars. On the other hand, the 1.8-liter combined with the CVT does give the Sentra good fuel economy, rated at 30 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. Nissan achieved this rating through a weight reduction on the car over the previous generation, and also by employing a smart alternator. This technology makes the alternator drop its connection to the engine under acceleration, so as to let more power go to the front wheels. When braking or coasting downhill, the alternator reattaches, using the excess kinetic energy to recharge the car’s battery. Nissan complements the drivetrain with Sport and Eco buttons for the driver placed inconspicuously by the driver’s left knee. Both change the CVT’s program, with the Sport mode making the accelerator more sensitive and giving the driver a stronger feeling of power from the car. Eco mode drastically detunes the gas pedal, making it harder to burn fuel for most of the pedal’s travel. It also reduces the air conditioning power, further helping to save gas. Drivers interested in saving even more gas can opt for the $400 FE+ package at the S or SV trims, which gets the highway fuel economy up to 40 mpg by adding some aero components and low rolling resistance tires.

Basic tech optional Nissan’s attitude toward tech in the Sentra seems a bit odd. At a presentation about the car, a spokesman said buyers don’t care about gadgets, a surprising statement considering the low price of the car should make it attractive to younger prospective owners who grew up with smartphones being a fact of life. As such, only the top SL trim comes standard with Bluetooth and a USB port. Buyers will have to add a $1,000 Driver package to get these features on the SV and SR trims. I would rather see Nissan make the CD player optional, and put a USB port in standard. The Navigation package is a better tech story. Optional on the SV, SR, and SL trims, it only costs $650, although it requires the Driver package, so SV and SR buyers would add a total of $1,650 to tech up their cars.

The navigation system, showing on a 5.8 inch LCD, runs off an SD card. It includes 2D and perspective views, and includes traffic and weather. Better yet, Nissan implemented a new connected technology that uses the driver’s smartphone as a data conduit to get points of interest (POI) from Google. This feature makes it less likely you will navigate to defunct restaurants, and makes for a much broader selection of businesses than a typical stored POI database. It also includes the capability to find a destination on your computer, then use the phone to bring it into the car. The navigation touch screen reacted promptly to my inputs and kept good track of the car’s location, but I was not able to test the Google POI system. The Nissan representatives on hand were sketchy on the details of how it works, although I assume there must be an app that you have to install to let the car use it as a data conduit. Other features included with the Navigation package are a rear-view camera and Pandora integration. After plugging a thumb drive into the car’s USB port, I was able to view its contents as a music library on the LCD. The touch screen showed the same instant response as it did for the navigation system. There was no voice command for the stereo, only for the Bluetooth phone system. The car I drove also had the Premium package installed, which brings in an eight-speaker Bose audio system, but I was not really able to judge its sound quality during this drive. At $1,200 for the package, it is a pricey addition. Room for a writer in the trunk The exterior styling of this new Sentra is very attractive, and much better than the outgoing model. Nissan also boasts the most rear-seat legroom compared with the Sentra’s competition. The trunk itself looked massive, and I was able to get in easily. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

81

Strangely, a fully optioned 2013 Sentra in SR trim is more expensive, at $22,750, than a fully optioned top SL trim, due to the latter car coming standard with the Driver package. Along with the Driver and Navigation packages, Nissan offers the Premium package with its upgraded audio system for $1,200 and a Leather package for $1,030. A sweeter tech spot in the line-up would be the SV trim with just the Driver and Navigation packages, coming in at $19,620.

Interviewed By: Jackie Bryant PROLIFIC WORLWIDE ©2013

JB: What led you to a career in modeling? JEANNINE: As a child I was always intrigued by the camera, whether putting on a fashion show in my mother’s clothes or just being a ham in front of the camera. I love the fact that you can express yourself without using words. JB: How would you describe your professional goals as a model? JEANNINE: One of my main goals is to inspire other woman like myself who don’t really fit “The Model” look. I’m not 5’8 and I’m full of curves. It’s a new generation, and it’s time for the world to see that models come in all shapes and sizes. JB: What is fun and rewarding about modeling to you? www.ProlificWorlwide.com

JEANNINE: I think fun and rewarding go hand in hand. The best part about being in this type of industry is meeting new people and making new friends. JB: What do you dislike about modeling? JEANNINE: I haven’t really found anything that I dislike about the industry, except that I don’t like working with Divas. We are all beautiful in our own way, but the inner beauty and humility outshines any wardrobe or make up. JB: Tell us about your experience of in the fashion side of modeling. JEANNINE: I always have my nose in a fashion magazine and I watch Fashion Police religiously. So I know to be a fashion model one must ALWAYS be camera ready. Stay toned, keep your complexion clear and always keep your weight down. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

Jeannine Fiallo

JB: What do you consider your biggest achievement thus far in your career? JEANNINE: Modeling has opened so many doors for me. I’m now pursuing acting also; I’ve been in numerous Independent films and commercials… Not to mention a few music videos (which were shown on MTV and BET). JB: How do you manage stressful working hours in modeling and acting? JEANNINE: You just have to keep the big picture in mind. If it was easy everyone would be doing it. If it’s something you really want then you’ll make time for it. JB: What kind of modeling do you like best…and why? JEANNINE: I love glamour as it makes me feel sexy without overdoing it. I’m all about giving you a little peek, and letting your mind do the rest. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

Jeannine Fiallo JB: Which of your traits help you the most in being a top model?

JB: Do you have a model friend you would like to give a shout out to?

JEANNINE: I think that my (ass-sets) are one of the best traits besides my smile and long black hair.

JEANNINE: Too many to mention, and I would hate to forget someone and hurt their feelings but I would love to give my family a big thank you for supporting me. Mom I’d be lost without you! I love you guys!!!

JB: How would you describe your posing when working with a photographer? JEANNINE: Honestly it all depends on what the photographer/ designer is looking for. I can give you anything from sexy seductive to shy girl next door. JB: When did you start modeling? JEANNINE: I remember modeling at the age of 3 when my mother would enter me in local pageants. Then after many years of being told that I was to curvy to be a model by agencies. I finally was seen by Ellay Williams, a photographer that opened the doors and signed me up to be in a glamour magazine called Raven. I was 20 years old. JB: What is the hardest thing for you as a model? JEANNINE: Having to watch what I eat. I’m Latina and I love good food. JB: What do you think about the show “TOP MODEL"? JEANNINE: I think it’s a great show and an eye opener for women that want to get into the business.

JB: What are the things that you as a model cannot be without? JEANNINE: I cannot be without MUSIC! I love listening to music while at a shoot; it really helps me loosen up. JB: Who are some of your favorite models and why? JEANNINE: It’s all about Marylyn Monroe; she was a real women who embraced her curves. JB: So where are you from you said you were Latina? JEANNINE: I’m from the lovely and always warm Tampa Fl. My parents are Cuban/Italians through… so that’s where the Latina comes in. JB: What are some of your main interests and hobbies? Jeannine Fiallo JB: Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs and catalogs do you visit often? JEANNINE: I would say Vogue and Glamour to keep up with the latest trends. I’m not much of a blogger.

JEANNINE: Don’t ever change who you are to accommodate anyone. Always stay true to yourself. JB: How do you prepare for a photo shoot?

JEANNINE: I like to think of myself as trendy. I like trying new styles and sometimes coming up with my own thing.

JEANNINE: I find out what the theme is, what they are looking for and deliver exactly or more in front of the camera. I also like to practice different poses in front of the mirror so I know what looks good and what doesn’t.

JB: Where do you generally shop?

JB: What does fashion mean to you?

JEANNINE: I just LOVE BEBE, Victoria Secret and Aldo.

JEANNINE: Individuality, it’s what you like and make it your own. It’s okay to step outside of the box.

JB: How would you describe your style?

JB: What other modeling projects have you done? Also can you provide links for us to follow? JEANNINE: You can check some of my work out on ModelMayhem.com My MM# is 1171856 and also on prolificworldwide.com. JB: Out of the entire photo’s you have taken so far, which is your favorite and why? JEANNINE: My Wonder Woman photo has to be my favorite. It was my first time shooting in body paint and the pictures came out so beautiful. JB: What advice do you have for aspiring models?

JB: Who are some of your favorite photographers you have worked with to date? JEANNINE: I have worked with too many good ones to mention. I have only worked with one that I would never recommend but the majority has always been professional and I have learned so much from them. JB: What makes Tampa a good shopping city? JEANNINE: Tampa has so many great shopping malls, but not enough competition like say Miami, Orlando, New York. I find that the Tampa area would

benefit if it would open an outlet in Downtown. The retail business in downtown needs the help. JB: How has modeling changed other aspects of your life? JEANNINE: It has taken me to other arenas of life, like traveling and living outside of the ordinary. JB: Do you do your own hair and makeup? JEANNINE: My mother is a makeup artist and hairstylist. I have learned so much from her and the tricks of the trade that I now do myself. JB: What are the main difference to you between the Runway and being in front of the camera? www.ProlificWorlwide.com

95

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

Jeannine Fiallo

JEANNINE: Runway you are live in front of an audience. Slips or wrong facial expressions can ruin the show. The camera, well you can be free, laugh and express yourself with the photographer. If you mess up well its take 2-3-4 to make it better. JB: What’s your favorite outfit from your own closet? JEANNINE: Oh geez, I really have lots of clothes, but my favorite would be a jeans, cute top and pumps. JB: Do you think Tampa has unique fashion? JEANNINE: I think Tampa has its own urban unique look, people dress up for clubs, dinner and of course the mallrat least I do! Yet it also has a very relaxed flip flop hair down don’t care type of attitude and people still think you're fine. JB: So with saying that… How would you describe your style? www.ProlificWorlwide.com

97

Jeannine Fiallo

JEANNINE: I have a sexy yet (ALWAYS) classy style. JB: Who are some of your favorite designers and why? JEANNINE: Right now I really like my girl JLO. She has the same ass-sets as me and I like the way her clothes look on me. JB: Where did you go to school at? JEANNINE: I graduated from Robinson High School and I attended HCC. I am going for my major in Mass communications. JB: So Jeannine is there anything else you would to tell us? JEANNINE: I will continue to follow my dreams. Someday I hope to either be known as a famous actress and/or singer. If all else fails I’ll be giving you the weather! ď Š www.ProlificWorlwide.com

Cocktail Attire for Men By Batul Nafisa Baxamusa When you are invited to a cocktail party, what is the most appropriate outfit for a man? We answer this question with options for what you can wear to a cocktail party. Did you know that it was the Prohibition that started the trend of cocktail parties? With it becoming illegal to sell, manufacture or transport alcohol for consumption nationally, people moved parties that served alcohol to their houses, and these events became the 'event' to attend. With increasing popularity, people started dressing up more fashionably and a whole new dress code emerged for the party. Attire for men was less formal at these events when compared to evening wear of the times.

With the rise in fashion conscious people, the cocktail parties became even more fashionable. The appropriate attire for a cocktail party during 1950s, for men became slim pants in silk or rayon with custommade jackets. Ascot accessories cotton or silk shirts with slender ties were accepted as cocktail attire dress code. Slowly, during the 1960s, ties became out-of-fashion as a part of cocktail attire for guys. Even today, the same logic applies to cocktail outfit for men.

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

103

What Can a Guy Wear to a Cocktail Party? Cocktail attire is defined as the suitable dress that can be worn on a formal occasion. It basically means wearing a dark suit for men. Cocktail attire for guys is mostly a suit and tie. You can even try wearing a coat and tie. Choose the colors and fabrics according to the latest trends of the season. Let us understand more about cocktail party attire according to the cocktail attire etiquette. Before deciding the cocktail party attire, check out how you received the invitation. If you received the invitation by phone or email, it means it is a casual affair. You can wear dress pants coupled with a stylish shirt and jacket. For not too casual or semi-formal parties, tuxedos paired with light-colored shirts with or without ties can be worn. If you are invited to association parties or charity raising cocktail parties, the cocktail attire etiquette calls for a formal dress up.

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

104

When you receive a formal invitation, watch out for words that say 'semi-formal' or 'black tie optional'. Semi-formal means a dark suit for men and black tie optional throws open a choice to wear a tuxedo or dark suit and a formal tie. A invitation card or pass means you need to dress up formally, that is, black suit and tie. Engraved Invitation cards or invitation through official channels indicate a black tie event. If you find there is no mention of a dress code on the invitation, then you need to check the venue. If it is luxury hotel, then you need to wear complete formals. When choosing the fabric, consider the current season. You can try light-colored linen or cotton fabrics during spring and summers. This is the season where you can try a few subtle colored clothes. Choose while dark and muted fabrics for fall and winter. These tones include navy, charcoal, dark brown, etc. Tropical colored fabrics are accepted during spring. In case it is a cocktail party to celebrate a wedding, you could wear a blazer or sport coat with a dark-colored jeans. You could also go in for corduroy pants paired with a turtle neck. A poolside cocktail party, spells more of a casual affair. Thus, you could wear pants with a light-colored, top-unbuttoned shirt.

The time of the day the party is hosted should also be taken into consideration. If it is a daytime party, you cam choose a less formal attire. This includes shirt, khaki pants and a blazer. You should dress up in a casual outfit for a cocktail party that is an afternoon event. You may try a formal suit for an evening men's cocktail attire. The strict no-no's in cocktail attire dress code, is wearing sneakers. You should also avoid athletic socks or even shorts as a cocktail party attire. Match the color of the socks with your pants. You can wear lace-up shoes or loafer-style shoes. In case, the climate is too hot, you may opt for lightweight pants in cool gingham or chambray. Make sure your cocktail attire is in coordination with the cocktail dress of your wife or date. www.ProlificWorlwide.com

105

A casual suit or well-ironed pants and a crisp buttoned shirt and tie will suffice as cocktail attire for guys on most occasions. If you have any doubts regarding the formality of the party, carry a jacket along with you to the event. Wear the jacket if you see it worn by other men, or leave it in your car, accordingly. Men's cocktail attire can be a combination of casual blazers and dinner jackets.

Accessories related to appropriate cocktail attire for a cocktail party, include a good leather belt and shiny, well-polished shoes. Match your watch, hat, etc. along with your cocktail attire. The most important point to be remembered when dressing up appropriately in a cocktail attire for men is how you carry yourself. Be comfortable with what you wear and make sure your clothes fit you properly. It's all in the attitude, that can even make a simple t-shirt worn to the cocktail party look acceptable. Give attention to the little details and you will surely be the eye-candy and most attractive and well-dressed invitee of the day.

7 Tips for Shooting Models Outdoors By: Mike Panic

Shooting models alone, for fun or for work can be challenging enough, but mix in an outdoor, on-location shoot and you’ll really put your skills to the test. Shooting outdoors offers up many more variables within photography, but also puts a certain strain on the shoot. Knowing what to do, when and quickly can make the difference between a successful shoot and a total flop. Here are seven tips for shooting models outdoors.

www.ProlificWorlwide.com

129

TIP NO

1

Scout your location ahead of time. While this isn’t always possible, you should, whenever feasible, scout the location you plan to shoot ahead of time. Take your camera, shoot some stills, and see how things will be framed in your camera.

TIP NO

Don’t rely on the LCD for image review. On even overcast days, reviewing images for exposure on the LCD of your camera can be very hard. Direct and indirect light can often give you misreading about what is and is not properly exposed images. If your camera has an option to blink blown out highlights and a histogram, use that option, otherwise take your camera inside, or at least in a vehicle nearby to review images if you must.

Bring a friend to be your photo assistant (PA). Working outside has some great advantages, mainly the natural light and scenery. There are also inherent disadvantages, like having to walk long distances to get to a particular spot, wind and manipulating the natural sunlight. Having a PA to help carry gear, hold reflectors and do some of the more labor-intensive work for you allows you to focus better on shooting.

Bring your own light. The sun provides so much light you say, why should I bring more? Because the sun can only provide single direction light, and often times it won’t be in the direction you need it. Additionally, you’ll need to fill in shadows on faces from late morning through midafternoon sun.

Reflectors and flags are your friends. Another job for the PA, hold the reflector. The larger the reflector the better in most cases. White and semi-white flags can be held above your models head to soften the light from the sun, acting in part the way the front panel of a soft box does, and are easily held in place by your PA.

Get some distance between you and the model. Unlike studio shooting, location shoots are fun, in part because you can use your long lenses for wide-open depth of field.

The model is the subject; the location is the compliment. Just because you’re outdoors doesn’t mean you need to forget about the model or throw the wide-angle lens on. Each shoot and campaign you do with models, or even just portfolio building will have a different purpose. More often than not you’ll need a location outdoors that compliments the model and overall feel of the shoot. Don’t assume your over-the-top, extravagant location will make up for poor photography; they need to work in synergy.
