Science Confirms The Obvious: Men And Women Aren't That Different A new psychology study brings "men are from Mars" gender stereotypes down to earth. By Shaunacy Ferro

F

rom The Same Planet?

We tend to think of the two sexes as a dichotomy. The most important question asked of new parents is "Boy or girl?" But as any tomboy could tell you, that doesn't always mean much. A new review of 13 past studies that showed significant differences has found that many of those differences are far less pronounced than the earlier studies implied. The "Big Five" personality traits of psychology -- openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism -- do not categorically vary between men and women. Contrary to stereotypes, women were not found to be significantly more intimate in their relationships, and science inclination did not overwhelmingly favor men. And masculinity and femininity, the study found, "are not all-or-nothing traits...they are truly a continuum.“ "Sex is not nearly as confining a category as stereotypes and even some academic studies would have us believe," according to lead author Bobbi Carothers. The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, was part of her doctoral dissertation in social psychology at University of Rochester. 6

Physically, men and women did fall into very distinct categories in categories like height and waist-to-hip ratio. But psychologically, not so much. Men and women consistently overlapped in attitudes and traits like empathy, fear of success and mate selection, indicating that sex differences are not categorical, but more a matter of degree. Carothers and Harry Reis, a psychology professor, reanalyzed data from 13 studies that had shown significant differences in the sexes, as well as collecting their own data on psychological indicators. They used three different statistical procedures to look for evidence that certain attributes could reliably identify someone as male or female.

G

reat Dichotomy:

Physical strength between men and women using data from the National Collegiate Athletic Association's long jump, high jump, and javelin throw competitions shows distinct differences between the sexes. Assertiveness as based on selfreported measures of competitiveness, decisiveness, sense of superiority, persistence, confidence, and the ability to stand up under pressure does not show the same gender gap. University of Rochester For 122 different characteristics, from empathy to sexuality to science inclination to extroversion, a statistical analysis of 13,301 individuals did not reveal any distinct differences between men and women.

Gender can be a predictor for stereotypic activities like scrapbooking or boxing, but men and women don't think about their relationships in "qualitatively different" ways, no matter what self-help books like Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus may claim. While there are average differences between the sexes, they aren't consistent enough to accurately characterize the entire group. Just because a man or woman fits into one stereotype for their gender doesn't mean they will fit into another. "The possession of traits associated with gender is not as simple as 'this or that'" the authors write. The study was based on questionnaires, and the authors admit that the results may not encapsulate real-life actions completely, as people don't always self-report accurately. They leave the door open for research that establishes a gender through interpersonal behavior. But dividing men and women into neatly separated, simplistic categories could be harmful for heterosexual relationships, Reis says. "When something goes wrong between partners, people often blame the other partner's gender immediately," he explains. "Having gender stereotypes hinders people from looking at their partner as an individual.“ Being of the opposite sex isn't what makes it seem like your partner is from another planet. "It's not so much sex, but human character that causes difficulties," Reis says. It's not you, it's me.

Top 10 Electric Sports Cars 2013 Trends keep on changing. This stands true for FMCG products that cost less money as well as for cars and bikes that are expensive. In cars the trend is slowly shifting towards the production and usage of electric or hybrid cars as they are more commonly known. They produce less harmful impacts to the environment than comparable conventional cars, for this reason they are also called Green Vehicles. By Jeff Holcomb

Note: Some of these cars are not entirely electric. 15

Honda CR-Z

This Honda sports car does not have the most powerful engine but it can punch out 122 HP. It comes with standard manual transmission and has a low centre of gravity. CR-Z can go from 0 to 60 mph in 9 sec which is not too good for a sports car but nevertheless it is fun to drive and easy to handle.

Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

Next up on our list is a hybrid sports car, Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. Unlike most of the other sports cars Panamera S is a four door vehicle. Its 3.0 L V6 engine can produce 380 hp, sufficient to take the car to a speed of 167 miles per hour. The only thing is that the car is not the quickest off its tracks. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 sec. 16

Tesla Model S

Tesla Model S is one fast green vehicle. Not only does it have a beautiful body but it also looks great. Tesla can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 sec. Its base price is $58,570. Tesla's engine is capable of punching out 362 horsepower.

V8 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG E-Cell

On number seven is V8 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG E-Cell. Its engine can punch out 563 horsepower that allows it to go to very high speeds. Official figures regarding the top speed of this electric sports car are yet to be released. However, one thing is for sure i.e. this car will be noisy and fast. 17

BMW i8

Occupying the number sixth spot is none other than BMW i8. This is probably the most renowned electric sports car on this list. The car has a 3 cylinder diesel engine capable of producing 400 hp. BMW i8 has two electric motors. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4 seconds. It cannot compete with the likes of Porsche 918 Spyder when it comes to top speed but nevertheless the engine can produce sufficient power to make the car go to a speed of 155 mph.

Audi e-Tron Spyder

When talking about futuristic cars, one can't ignore Audi. Audi e-Tron Spyder is one crowd puller electric car. This plug-in hybrid car can generate 388 horsepower. It has a top speed of 155 miles per hour and can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 sec. 18

Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid

Next up on the top ten lists of fast electric sports car is another Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Tough this is not exactly a production electric car but it does fall under the category of green vehicles, and due to its 640 hp engine and the fact that this car can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 sec I had to include it. This is a beautiful Porsche with grace and class etched in every inch. The unique characteristic of this car is that it makes use of kinetic energy stored in flywheel. This energy can be used by the driver as and when needed.

Ferrari 599 Hy-Kers

On number three is Ferrari 599 Hy-Kers. This is not a production electric sports car, it is a beautiful Ferrari concept car that was developed by the Ferrari's Formula F1 engineers. It has a V12 engine capable of generating 611 horsepower. Wonderful technology that has been incorporated into it allows it to be fuel economical as well. This is a very balanced car with easy to understand functionality and good acceleration time. 19

Jaguar C-X75

When talking about fast sports cars there is no way that Jaguar can be left out. Jaguar CX75 occupies second position on our list of fastest electric cars. BBC car show Top gear terms C-X75 as revolutionary. The car has four electric motors and two turbines. The system is capable of producing a combined horsepower of 780 hp. It can go from 0 to 60 Mph in just 3.3 sec. C-X75 has enough power to reach a speed of 200 mph.

Porsche 918 Spyder

Occupying the top position is none other than the Porsche 918 Spyder. This limited production car can cost as much as $845, 000. 918 Spyder has a V8 engine, capable of producing 580 horsepower. When the horsepower of 2 electric motors (one at front and one at rear) is combined with engine the total comes out to be 795 hp. This Porsche car capable of going from 0 to 62 Mph in 3 seconds and has a top speed of 205 Mph.

AMERICA’S NEXT SUPER MODEL

CLAIR

Interview: Sherry Johnson Photos: Blake Cortes

Clair the rising Super Model talks about how after hearing the words “It's never too late to live your dreams, The words have become a part of her and since believing those powerful words her modeling career has been skyrocketing more so now than ever at the age of 26. Prolific: What led you to a career in modeling? Clair: Growing up, people would always make comments such as, "Clair, the super model" or asking "Why don't you model?" I could never see exactly what it was that everyone else saw. Once I hit my teenage years, my mother decided to take me to my first shoot to have comp cards made. At that point in my life, like the majority of young teenage girls I wasn't highly confident in myself so I never took it to the next level. A few years later as I was starting to grow more comfortable in my own skin, my mother suggested that we go to a couple local agencies.

32

AmĂŠriques Prochain Top Model Clair The two agencies we visited were both impressed and were willing to work with me. They had me walk down my first runway under the pressure of eager eyes also waiting to be selected. They said I was a natural, but of course after claiming to be an agency, they then proceed to tell us that it's a school and they want to charge me a tuition of $2,000. The modeling came to a halt for many years to come after that. After I hit my twenties, I figured it was too late to get started again until someone said the famous words, "It's never too late to live your dreams," and from then on my modeling career has been skyrocketing, more so now than ever at the age of 26. Prolific: How would you describe your professional goals as a model? Clair: Major magazine cover, modeling contract with a wellknown company and be able to reach out to millions. Prolific: What is fun and rewarding about modeling? Clair: The most rewarding aspects when it comes to modeling are getting to explore new locations, connecting with like-minded, creative individuals, forming visions and ideas into reality, and the gratifying feeling of accomplishing new challenges with each shoot. Every shoot allows me to grow spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.

Prolific: What do you dislike about modeling?

Clair: There's not much I can say I dislike about modeling in my own personal life, but when it comes to the bigger picture, I don't agree with the negative affects it can have on young children both male and female either aspiring to be or already in the field. Prolific: Tell us about your experience of a fashion model. Clair: Modeling is definitely not easy as some like to assume. It can be very difficult depending on the style of shoot, outfit, and posing. It can also be very inspiring and moving. I never walk away from a shoot without gaining something to grow from. Prolific: As a fashion model what is your biggest achievement in your career? Clair: I'm proud to say that I've signed with two agencies within the past couple of years.
 34

Amériques Prochain Top Model Clair Prolific: How would you describe your posing when working with a photographer?

Clair: It varies depending on the type of shoot and what the photographer is looking for. Prolific: When did you start modeling? Clair: I started modeling at the age of 15. Prolific: What is the hardest thing for you as a model? Clair: The most difficult aspect would be the ever-changing schedule. One day I'll have to wake up at sunrise and then the next I'll be shooting till sunrise. Prolific: What do you think about the show "Top Model"?

Prolific: How do you manage stressful working hours and multiple fashion shows? Clair: It really all comes down to time management, eating healthy, and exercising.

Prolific: What kind of modeling do you like the best and why? Clair: I love to shoot edgy high fashion; anything that is outside of the box. Prolific: Which of your traits help you the most in being a good model? Clair: Being coachable.

Clair: I have found it to be very helpful and motivating. The show allows people to see that modeling isn't all fun and glamorous; that it is hard work and one has to be dedicated to make it in this industry. Prolific: Do you have a model friend you would like to give a shout out to? Clair: I'll give a shout out to not just one, but to all my fellow models out there pursuing their dreams. I have much love and appreciation for all of you.
Prolific: What are the things that you as a model cannot be without? Clair: Inspiration and feedback. 36

Amériques Prochain Top Model Clair Prolific: Who are some of your favorite fashion models and why? Clair: I honestly don't pay attention to any specific models.
 Prolific: Where are you from?

Clair: I was born in Houston, TX and raised partially in Grand Rapids, MI. I grew up living in Tampa, FL. Prolific: What are some of your main interests and hobbies? Clair: Music, dance, painting, drawing, w orking out, traveling and animals. Prolific: Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs and catalogs do you visit most often? Clair: Vogue, Elle, & Runway. Prolific: How would you describe your style?
Clair: It would be impossible to classify my style as just one type. I love variety & color. You'll rarely see me in a neutral outfit without a splash of color, unless I'm going to a black & white party where it's absolutely required. I can never have too much jewelry on, I love to accessorize. I've been told I have a bohemian style.
Prolific: What other modeling projects have you done? Clair: This will be my first online project. Prolific: Out of all the photos you have taken which is your favorite and why? Clair: One of my most recent shots screaming into a light bulb as if it were a microphone. Prolific: Do you have any other interest in the fashion industry?

Clair: I've always had an eye for photography and editing. I've also designed my own clothes. Prolific: What advice do you have for other aspiring models?
Clair: Stay true to yourself and do not conform to anything or anyone that is harmful to your health and well-being. Prolific: How do you prepare for a photo shoot? Clair: I make a conscious effort to go to sleep at a decent hour, have everything I need for the shoot ready the night 39 before, and eat a healthy breakfast.

Amériques Prochain Top Model Clair Prolific: What are some other cities you think provide good/great shopping experiences?
Clair: The couple of times I did enjoy shopping were in Chicago and NYC.
Prolific: How has modeling changed other aspects of your life? Clair: Modeling has taught me to push through challenges and become more confident in my decision making.
Prolific: Do you do your own hair and makeup? Clair: I sometimes prefer to, but it's easier to work with a makeup artist so that I can focus only on modeling and give my all. Prolific: What are the main differences to you between runway and photographic modeling? Prolific: What does fashion mean to you? Clair: Creation for inspiration. Prolific: Who are some of your favorite fashion photographers? Clair: Blake Cortes and Jose Vargas
Prolific: What makes Tampa a good shopping city? How could Tampa's shopping be improved? Clair: In all honesty, I'm not a big fan of shopping. You might want to ask the next model.

Clair: With runway, you have to be on point with every single move, whereas photographic modeling you have more leeway to make a mistake and try again. Take for example, the difference between acting in a play as oppose to acting on set and having the option to say cut and recite your lines.

Prolific: What's your favorite outfit from your own closet? Clair: Right now, for Florida summer's weather, my favorite outfit is a spaghetti strap & soft green shorts, with my brown combat boots. 41

Amériques Prochain Top Model Clair Prolific: What makes Tampa's fashion unique?

Clair: Tampa's style is very versatile.
Prolific: Who are some of your favorite designers and why? Clair: I honestly don't pay much attention to designer clothing, therefore I really don't know any popular designers. Prolific: When and why did you get started in modeling? Clair: I pretty much summed up the when in the first question of the interview. Reason being why is that I've always dreamed of living the Hollywood lifestyle. What little girl growing up doesn't wish for that at some point during their childhood? As I started maturing, different insecurities and doubts did as well. One day I decided I would no longer let anything hold me back and to go after my dreams no matter the rejections and seemingly impossible hurdles that come along with the journey.

Prolific: Where did/do you go to high school/college? Clair: I attended Wharton & Freedom High School. In Tampa, FL. .

Prolific: Is there anything else you would like to say? Clair: Thank you for having me as a part of Prolific!

XOXO - Clair 43

DJ I AM

Interview By: Rozwell We recently interviewed DJ I Am out of Florida. He candidly speaks openly about how Profanity can actually ruin good music. Within the interview DJ I AM also talked about the cause and effect of how spending power can effect the Music Industry and more. So, what is your favorite song from the past 5 years? I'm a music lover; literally I love all kinds of music. I don't know that it's possible for a DJ to choose only one song that is my favorite over the last 5 years. But if I have to choose only one it would probably be: "Praise Him In Advance" By Marvin Sapp. Here are just a few others that came out over the last 5 years that I also enjoyed: I'm A Boss - Meek Mill, Rum & Redbull - Beenie Man, Just Fine - Mary J. Blige, Empire State Of Mind - Jay-Z & Alicia Keys, Lose My Mind - Young Jeezy Ft. Plies, Pretty Wings - Maxwell, Greenlight - John Legend Ft. Andre 3000, Drink To That - Rhianna, I Trust You - James Fortune & Fiya, And The Party 101 Productions Anthem - Ft. Keith J., LuvLea, & DJ I AM. When did you start djing? I started in 1989. I was a hobbyist back then. I became a full-time professional DJ in 2009. Where do you spin usually? Currently I'm The Resident DJ for Pirate Radio Invasion, Which Is the University of South Florida's Hip-Hop Radio Show. That Radio Broadcast Airs Every Tuesday From 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. EST, and Every Friday From 10 p.m. - Midnight EST. It can be heard online, via the Tune In radio App on smart phones, and locally on 1620 AM or 88.5 HD2. I'm Also The Resident DJ For ((Worthi Thursdays)) At Taiga Nightclub in Brandon Florida. However, I "usually" spin for high-end private parties, weddings, & corporate events. Although I'm a radio DJ and nightclub DJ, my primary business comes from private parties, concerts, festivals, and corporate events throughout the state of Florida & New York City.

47

DJ I AM What was your favorite local party in the last year?

I would have to say my favorite parties to hang out at this past year where: Ol Dirty Sundays at the Crowbar in Ybor City, Tampa; and the QC Party Starter Parties At AjA in Channelside, Tampa. If you're asking what was my local favorite that I was the DJ at, I would have to say both the Gasparilla Day & Knight Parades; I was the DJ for the Grand Krewe De Libertalia. Spinning on a Float and rocking a crowd of 250,000+.... those were definitely my favorite local parties that I've performed at. What does Tampa offer that keeps you here? I love the people, I love the weather, I love the beaches, I love the beauty of the city, and overall I just love Tampa. I think Tampa is an emerging city. It's not a big city yet, but Tampa has a lot of great "big city" things when it comes to music, the arts, dining, sports, and more. The only thing that comes to mind that I would like to change about Tampa is the distribution of wealth and the earning potential for the people of the city. There is a large gap between the haves and have nots in Tampa Bay, and I think far too many companies pay very low wages, which keeps the overall spending power of the residents low and makes young people want to leave the city for bigger earning opportunities in cities like Miami & Atlanta. Young people leaving the city and people having little expendable cash hurts my business. Therefore, I’m often performing in cities outside of Tampa because my earning potential is better. I wish that wasn't the case. But overall, I love my city and I enjoy performing in Tampa Bay. Who is your favorite DJ? Favorite Street DJ - Ted Smooth. Favorite Performance (tricks and scratches) DJ - DJ Scratch, Favorite Mic Work DJ - DJ S&S & Jam Pony, Favorite Radio DJ - Tom Joyner, DJ Drama, Favorite EDM DJ - Calvin Harris, Favorite Mix Tape DJ - DJ Clue, Favorite Tampa DJ - DJ Sandman & DJ Rock It Rod, Favorite Internationally Known DJ - Jazzy Jeff, Favorite Nationally Known DJ - Kid Capri, Favorite Founding Father DJ - DJ Hollywood & DJ Marly Marl, Favorite DJ On The Come Up - THE BLEND KING DJ I AM, And Favorite DJ Of All Time, Jam Master Jay.

DJ I AM What are your music predictions?

Well Rozwell, I'm not sure what you're really asking me… but I predict that I will be one of the most financially successful, loved, and respected DJs in the world. I predict I will make The Forbes list of the world's highest paid DJs. And I also predict that Party 101 Productions will become both a household brand name and the number one DJ booking agency in the world. Vinyl or CD? Vinyl, CD, Or Digital are all good to me. All that matters to me is did I rock the party. The format used to bring the music to the people is completely irrelevant to me. Old School or New School? I Love Both. Great Music Is Timeless. I Love Old School for the Memories. Different Old Schools Songs Remind Me Of Times In My Life, People In My Life, And When I Fell In Love With The Music. I Love New School For The Creativity And Energy. I Will Say That With New School Music, Especially HipHop, They Curse Pointlessly And Use The Word Nigger WAY TOO MUCH. I tell young artists to think of cursing like putting salt in food. If you put the right amount of salt it can make the food taste better. If you put too much salt it will ruin the dish. I think some great artists are ruining their music with unnecessary cursing and the overuse of profanity just makes an artist sound ignorant. I really enjoy dope MCs that don't need to curse to make a hit record.

Favorite Lyrics? That's another difference that's between me and them. I smarten up, open the market up. One million, two million, three million, four. In eighteen months, eighty million more. Now add that number up with the one I said before. You are now lookin at one smart black boy. Momma ain't raise no fool. Put me anywhere on God's green earth, I'll triple my worth. Motherfucker – “I, will, not, lose" – Jay-Z - You Don't Know

DJ I AM One thing you would change about the current local music scene? I would have it supported nationally and internationally just like the artists in NY, Miami, Atlanta, & Los Angeles. I think Tampa, and the state of Florida has an amazing amount of talent. But somehow when people from outside of the state think music, they only think Miami. Additionally, the local music scene certainly can rival any other major market but it needs the support and inclusion of the larger media outlets from around the state and from around the country. I would also like to see artists coming out of Florida doing a better job of lifting Florida up to the media and supporting those on the come up. Specifically, I would love to see those who have "made it" out of Florida like: Rick Ross, Pitbull, Flo Rida, Ace Hood, & Plies sharing multiple success stories that stem from them working with up and coming Florida artists to ensure that they too are well connected and get big breaks and opportunities to go beyond being local. Finally, I would like to see more financial support for indie artists from the community, especially indie Hip-Hop artists. I would like to see more people at their shows, and buying their music. Most people you ever played in front of? 250,000+ Last week I performed at Florida Gulf Coast University for 3,600. (You can see clips of both on YouTube) First feeling of being Star struck? The only time I've ever been Star struck was when I met Stevie Wonder. Hip Hop or Techno? I Love Hip-Hop! But I’m not mad at Techno (EDM), that's where the money is at right now, so I spin both all the time. What do you drink when you perform? I enjoy Tequila or Champagne. Some night's no drinks, and some nights too many to remember.
