CHAIR’S MESSAGE The Committee for Greater Shepparton has now been established for a full year. There has been much hard work done behind the scenes to ensure that we have been established on a solid footing and that our structures, governance processes, and early policy development is soundly based, and appropriately focused. The will to establish the Committee for Greater Shepparton came from the community. It was the community’s belief that the time was right for a well-organised and independent advocate for the Greater Shepparton region, and this belief has been strongly vindicated. The level of interest and engagement in the Committee for Greater Shepparton has come from far and wide. New and effective relationships have already been formed with business and community leaders, politicians of all persuasions, and key bureaucrats.

Perhaps our strongest achievement has been our ability to help ‘join the dots’ between organisations and people who are working hard in their individual fields, but have not previously found an effective and broadly based forum to collaborate, strategize, and seek advocacy support from. This includes business, Council, government, community groups, and a range of worthy programs. In providing such a forum, the Committee is helping build consensus about what sort of a community we aim to be, and how we are going to get there. Members continue to bring forward ideas, contacts, and inspirations. We are contributing to State and Federal policy development from a Goulburn Valley perspective with clearly articulated submissions, briefings, and roundtables. We are actively collaborating on multiple business development opportunities that will bring employment and economic diversification to our region, and we are acutely conscious that we need to share the benefits of the future success and prosperity of this region as fairly as possible.

In less than a year it is clear that the Committee for Greater Shepparton has developed an effective and credible voice, and has a strong role to play in shaping the future of the Greater Shepparton region. It is clear that Greater Shepparton has a strong future – our region is rapidly emerging from the doldrums of droughts, floods, high dollars and low commodity prices. We must ensure that all the opportunities that are now right before us, are fully taken up, and are leveraged to their maximum. I thank our members for their commitment to the future of Greater Shepparton, and look forward to now leveraging off the early work that has been done, to get visible results, and to bring forward our positive future. CEO MESSAGE The Committee for Greater Shepparton has had a strong foundation year. A year that has seen strong membership support, tangible achievements and effective engagement with all tiers of government. The 2014 Committee for Greater Shepparton Annual Report provides members with an overview of the organisation’s first year of operation as well as prescribing the strategic focus areas to unlock the productive and social capacity of the region. Thank you to our foundation year members. Without your support there would be no Committee for Greater Shepparton. You, more than most, understand that our future isn’t the responsibility of anyone but us. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE VOLUNTEERED TO THE ASSIST WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COMMITTEE FROM ITS CONCEPTUAL MEETING IN JULY 2013. THE APPOINTMENT OF THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AND DEVELOPMENT OF ITS BUSINESS PLAN, BEFORE FINALISING THE ELECTION OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. The Interim Executive Committee comprises; David McKenzie (Chair), Rob Priestley, Nat Akers, Peter Bicknell, Jim Andreadis and Damian Trezise. The Executive Committee would also like to acknowledge the significant contribution of Jim O’Connor in establishing the Committee for Greater Shepparton.

DAVID MCKENZIE, INTERIM CHAIR David is a property valuer based in Shepparton, specialising in the valuation of agricultural property and water rights. David is Chair of North East Water, and previously served several terms on the Board of Goulburn Valley Water; he is a member of the Goulburn Valley Industry Transition Committee (and previously a member of the Goulburn Valley Industry & Employment Taskforce). David also served on the Board of Shepparton Retirement Villages (including three terms as President) for 11 years. He is regarded as one of the foremost experts in Australia in the analysis of water markets and valuation of water assets, and has addressed several international conferences on topics related to this specialty. He is a Partner & Director of the Opteon Property Group, with several offices across northern Victoria and northern Tasmania, employing more than 40 staff.

PETER BICKNELL Peter is a director of MB+M Pty Ltd, a Chartered Accounting firm based in Shepparton. His areas of specialisation include business growth strategies and acting as a business coach and mentor to his clients. Peter’s interests stretch over primary production and related industries, analysis of property development projects and public relations. Peter has a keen sense of community and has been involved in a wide range of local charities and organisations seeking to further the interests of the Greater Shepparton region. “The Greater Shepparton community has a new and vibrant point of advocacy in the establishment of this organisation. We have already drawn the interest of all levels of Government and we will very quickly be seen as a key player in developing the future shape of our region.”
DAMIAN TREZISE
(Replaced Ross McPherson) As Chief Executive Officer of McPherson Media Group, Damian Trezise is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the group, encompassing commercial printing, magazines, internet services and newspaper and online publishing, including the Shepparton News. Damian commenced with McPherson Media Group at the Riverine Herald (Echuca) in 1991 and progressed to Group General Manager prior to being appointed CEO in July 2011. Schooled in business management both here and overseas, Damian is committed to preserving the family values of the McPherson Media Group and its dedication to the communities it serves.
NATALIE AKERS Natalie Akers is also a Director of Murray Goulburn. She has a Bachelor of Public Policy and Management with Honours, a Bachelor of Arts and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Together with her husband, Natalie operates a dairy farm at Tallygaroopna, milking 650 cows.
ROB PRIESTLY Rob Priestly, has been at the family company Gouge Linen and Garment Services for 15 years and a director for 10. Gouge employ 150 staff in Greater Shepparton, with the company servicing most of Victoria. Key clients are health, food processing, and hospitality. Before joining the company Rob worked in domestic, then export grain trading. Rob is married with three sons. “Shepparton is a great business community, and the time Is right for the Committee for Greater Shepparton to work with others to capitalise on our strengths.”
JIM ANDREADIS Jim Andreadis is Managing Director at Superlative Group. Jim has a long history developing and investing in commercial property in Shepparton and around the Goulburn Valley. Jim is heavily involved in the community and has been a founding board member of the Goulburn Valley Community Fund from its inception eight years ago. He has also held board positions with the Shepparton Festival, Bridge Youth Services and Shepparton Show Me.
MATT NELSON, CEO
Additional to his CEO duties, Damian is a member of the CEO Institute and serves on the Boards of the Victorian Country Press Association, Regional Dailies Victoria and The Goulburn Valley Community Fund. He is also a local member of Rotary.
Matt has over 15 years experience in regional development with all tiers of government and most recently was the Assistant Regional Director for the Hume Region of Regional Development Victoria (RDV).
Damian lives in Kyabram, Victoria and is married with three daughters.
He has a strong knowledge of Northern Victoria, especially the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District (GMID), and in 2008 was recruited by RDV to work with Foodbowl Unlimited and the six GMID councils in implementing the Capitalising on Victoria’s Food Bowl project. Matthew has recently been a Board member of the Murray Dairy Board and Fairley Leadership Program.
