History and Heritage GREATER SHEPPARTON HAS A DEPTH OF HISTORY FULL OF INTRIGUE, BRAVERY, SURVIVAL AND CHARM Our Heritage Centres located in Shepparton, Mooroopna, Murchison, Tatura and Merrigum are filled with priceless gems from the history of the World War II internment camps scattered throughout the Murchison and Tatura regions, to the history of farming, irrigation and medical procedures of the past. The museums will engage, educate and enlighten you. The historic river crossing of McGuires Punt over the Goulburn is the location for the Shepparton Heritage Museum. Filled with Shepparton treasures and home of the family history group, the Museum gives you an insight as to how Shepparton used to be and the importance of rivers to our local towns. The Tatura Museum has a plethora of artefacts that bring you back into the times of World War II and the internment camps that housed German and Italian internees. The famous Murchison Meteorite was observed falling from the skies in September 1969. This meteorite has over 70 amino acids of which only 19 have been

identified as known on earth. Murchison also has a deep Aboriginal history, discover the history and stories at the museum. The Merrigum Museum hosts an annual open day with demonstrations of working farm machinery and household appliances - come along and make your own butter and marvel at how lucky we are to be living in modern times.

Our rich and diverse Aboriginal history includes the first purpose-built Aboriginal Cultural Keeping Place, the Bangerang Cultural Centre, where visitors can learn about Aboriginal culture and history. The history of the Yorta Yorta people can also be experienced on “The Flats” walk between Shepparton and Mooroopna. You will also find historic monuments throughout the region including the Furphy Statue in Shepparton. Joseph Furphy worked at the Furphy Foundry but was also an author who wrote under the pen name of Tom Collins and wrote such classics as “Such Is Life”. DISCOVER! Why the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) has been voted Victoria’s best small art museum (2012). Greater Shepparton is home to the Shepparton Art Museum, affectionately known as SAM. SAM boasts an impressive collection of Australian historical and contemporary ceramics whilst also hosting a distinct program of temporary exhibitions. SAM is also home to the renowned Sam Jinks sculpture “Woman and Child”. The region’s unique public art exhibition, MooovingArt has become widely known and popular. Scattered throughout the area are over 90 of our colourful life sized 3D fibreglass cows. The quirky bovines each have their own distinctive personality and design. The cows are a much loved celebration of the region’s agricultural industry so keep an eye out for the girls, and be sure to participate in our annual cow roundup!

From indigenous works and history to the historic campsites of those interned during WWII in the camps that were located in the Murchison and Tatura areas. The Greater Shepparton MooovingArt cows are scattered throughout the region, each cow is unique and provides much excitement and adds colour to the region. During the September school holidays, you can win yourself some fantastic prizes by participating in the Visitor Centre’s annual MooovingArt round up. Fish, boat or canoe the Victoria Park Lake precinct, or pack a picnic and let the kids go wild at the S-Cape skate park. The precinct backs onto the majestic Goulburn River and the open spaces and towering river red gums allow you to really appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Cycle or wander the amazing Yahna Gurtji shared path network. Winding its way along the Goulburn River, it’s no wonder that Shepparton ranks in the top 10 walking towns in Australia.

The rivers are not the only amazing waterways where you can discover our local flora and fauna and get close to nature. The region’s wetlands include Cussen Park in Tatura, Gemmills Swamp in Mooroopna and Reedy Swamp in Shepparton. Mooroopna Known affectionately as the Fruit Salad City, Mooroopna is situated just minutes from Shepparton but has an identity all of its own. The main street features wide open shady spaces with historical monuments and a water tower that comes to life at night with a colourful light show. Home to the annual Fruit Salad Day where local growers donate fresh produce for sale with proceeds donated to local charities, Mooroopna offers an eclectic mix of dining establishments, retail stores and a golf course that will challenge even the best of players. Live theatre and music features at the WestSide Performing Arts Centre and you can immerse yourself in the town’s history and local exhibitions at the Mooroopna Museum. Wander down to The Flats, a walk which will give you an insight into our local Aboriginal history and the story behind this community. Visit Gemmills Swamp, a wildlife reserve that encompasses 170 hectares of red gum floodplain and wetlands, where it is not uncommon to see an array of flora and fauna in a unique and diverse environment.

Dookie Located within the rolling hills of Mount Major, Mount Saddleback and Gentle Annie, sits the vibrant community of Dookie. The area is home to a landscape of rich red Dookie soil. Seasonal colours come alive during Spring with the golden yellow of canola and luminous green of legumes and wheat crops flourishing. During Summer, the countryside is scattered with hundreds of rolls of hay while Autumn leads us back into the spectacular views of the red volcanic sands and sheep and cattle grazing. Absorb it all while walking or cycling the nine kilometre Dookie Rail Trail. Experience the fertility of the red Dookie soils in the local produce. Dookie is home to vineyards where the secret of the produce is said to be in the richness of the soil, delivering a depth of taste matched by no other. The award winning Tallis Wine is located in Dookie. Tatura Located in the heart of “water wheel country”, Tatura is an energetic town known to double its population when hosting major events such as the southern hemisphere’s largest dairy show International Dairy Week. Lined with historic architecture, the main street of Tatura is steeped in history. From the beautiful Court House, to the old convent building and the history from World War II with seven Prisoner of War camps operating in the district at the time, you can witness the history of the camps with the German War Cemetery and the Tatura Museum providing a plethora of artefacts, stories and photographs, giving you a real sense of the region’s wartime history. Visit the newly unveiled statue of the Victoria Cross recipient Private Robert Mactier, in the park named in his honour. Murchison Located on the banks of the Goulburn River, Murchison is internationally known for the Murchison Meteorite that fell over the township in September 1969. It is also known as our River Bank Garden town. The relaxed atmosphere of the town hides a depth of history and beauty just waiting to be discovered. Murchison was host to a number of paddle steamers prior to 1887, that would make their way from the mighty Murray River along the Goulburn River. Wander beside the river gardens and marvel at how the township looked in days past with the many lecterns along the extensive boardwalks and viewing platforms over the majestic river.

The history of the wartime internment camps is also evident with the Italian Ossario in Murchison. This mausoleum was constructed in remembrance of Italian prisoners of war and internees who died in Australian wartime camps.
