Sherwin-Williams Paint System Review
By Steve Oakes - Owner, Dr. Vinyl of Hampton/Newport News VA
We’ve had the Sherwin-Williams Paint System for a couple of months now. It comes complete with a Camera, Computer and Paint/Toner Mixing Rack. The auto paint repair technicians in the shop like the camera and I feel like it has really sped things up. Prior to having this system, they were using the paint chips from Transtar. Sometimes with the Transtar paint chips, it would take a long time to come up with a good color matches.
The Sherwin-Williams Paint Mixing Rack mixes the toners thoroughly and I believe we have less trouble with the paint thickening which makes pouring it difficult and/or sometimes, it not pouring at all. There are fewer toners in the Sherwin-Williams BC8 system than there is with Transtar & PPG systems. I’m a mobile technician and since there are less toners, it takes up much less space than the PPG toners I was using.
I personally don’t use the camera, but so far the paint matches are fantastic. The paint covers well, usually only taking two coats to cover. In the Sherwin-Williams App, it stores every paint code you look up into batches, so it’s much faster and easier to find colors you’ve already mixed up along with the quantities.
Regarding the clears, they have many different clearcoats available that vary in price, mixing ratios and drying times. The HPC21Clearcoat I use from Sherwin-Williams is very thin. It gives an amazing shine and it is easy to blend because it is so thin. It is fast to apply because there is no wait time between coats and it dries fast and in 25 minutes you can cut and polish. I use 25% - 50% less clear on jobs than I did before. Also, there is less overspray. Overall, it’s more money (the clear) than what I was using before, but I feel it is well worth it.

As many of you have heard, PPG will be making some changes to the toners and pearls in the future. The most current change is the VM4381 Frosted Silver which has been discontinued and replaced with DMD1781 Silver Glass. The colors are the same, it’s just a new number and new name. You can continue to use your VM4381 and replace it with DMD1781 when you run out. The DMD1781 is in stock at the Dr. Vinyl/Doctors Touch parts department. Give us a call or send a email to parts@drvinyl.com to order yours today!
PPG Announces Price Increase
As you know, in this challenging economic climate PPG continues to look for ways to respond to cost inflation and control spending through more efficient operations; however, efficiency wins alone are unfortunately not sufficient to offset our increased costs, and accordingly further price adjustments are now necessary. PPG is focused on providing industry-leading coatings technology, best-in-class color matching, and innovative programs and services. To maintain this commitment, PPG will be implementing increased prices on all automotive refinish collision brands effective January 1, 2024, by a weighted average of 7.3%.
I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

The Heat Is On
Most of us are finding ourselves in the midst of the hottest time of the year. Soaring temperatures are spreading throughout most parts of the country – leaving Dr. Vinyl technicians with sunburns and lots of sweat!
Dehydration is the most crucial part of working outdoors when we are trying to make money in temperatures that are in the 3-digits! Even if you are not thirsty - drinking plenty of water and sport drinks such as Gatorade is exceptionally important. Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, that increase metabolic heat. Also, taking breaks by going inside in an air conditioned room is important, doing so will allow your body temperature to cool down.
Unfortunately, we have many more things to take care of besides ourselves. We carry a lot of heat and air cure products in our vans. A jar of Vinyl/Leather Filler left open in the extreme heat, just for a little while, will begin the curing process. Keep containers tightly closed, preferably in a cooler with ice packs. The ice packs will help keep your products cool. The cooler is also a great place for your Chill Bar. Your Chill Bar can not do its job if it’s hot. Having two chill bars would be very sufficient during extremely hot temperatures.
Before performing any type of repair on a vehicle in direct sunlight when the temperature is extremely hot, if possible, move the vehicle to the shade. Remember, when it is hot products will cure faster and when it is cold, it will take longer for them to cure. Allow your products to work the way they are design too. Make sure to also move any car that is in need of a windshield repair in to the shade or indoors if possible. When turning the air on to cool the glass, make sure not to place setting below 74 degrees Fahrenheit. The windshield could cool too fast on the bottom which puts the glass at greater risk of cracking. Apply alcohol to the entire glass, which has a cooling effect. Also place a white sheet on the windshield to improve heat reflection. Last but not least, keep your hairdryer nearby when spraying lacquer in high humidity to prevent “blushing”. Blushing is when your coating is turning milky grey or white as it is drying.
Stay Cool
Buster Coppage
