Apartment All Stars Return
A
partment All-Stars returned to Salt Lake City January 29th to an extensive crowd of over 250 apartment and property managers from the far reaches of the state. The Apartment All Star Experience gave a unique blend of education from three national speakers. This dynamic tour has been igniting the leasing and marketing arena for across the country for over 10 years. The speakers Kate Good, Pete Regules, and Alex Jackiw presented on topics that gave solutions to real life problems. LDS Endorsement May Mean Movement on Sexual Orientation as a Protected Class
A
n endorsement of legislation to make sexual orientation may persuade Utah lawmakers to take seriously an effort to add sexual orientation to Utah Fair Housing Act. However, nuance in the church’s official statement may also make the issue more complicated and its fate uncertain. Although the church indicated it was time for governments to consider protecting gays and lesbians rights to not be discriminated against in employment and housing, they also indicated that there needed to be protections of religious freedoms as well. St. George, is running a bill, SB 100, that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the Utah Fair Housing Act, prohibiting discrimination against the two protected classes in housing and employment. In Idaho, illustrating how the church’s statement could actually encourage lawmakers to vote against Utah's bill, 5 LDS republican lawmakers were among those voting 13-4 to against an similar version because it did not contain protections for people of faith. According to parts of the statement made by Dallin H. Oaks, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the church said,
"We call on local, state and the federal government to serve all of their people by passing legislation that protects vital religious freedoms for individuals, families, churches and other faith groups while also protecting the rights of our LGBT citizens in such areas as housing, employment and public accommodation in hotels, restaurants and transportation — protections which are not available in many parts of the country." In 2009 the LDS church and the UAA both supported a nondiscrimination ordinance in Salt Lake City that made sexual orientation and gender identity protected classes.
