NORON PRECISION, A WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS, CERTIFIES TO ISO 9001: 2015 WITH THE HELP OF CONSULTING GROUP BMSC Noron Precision Machining is pleased to announce that they successfully certified to ISO 9001: 2015! The company didn’t certify to this renown ISO standard to improve their quality and on-time delivery. In fact, their quality measures were pristine, so much so that for one of their key customers, they have received two consecutive bi-yearly, ‘Supplier of The Year’ Awards in recognition of exemplary service providing 100 percent on-time delivery and quality. That same customer recently told Debbie that if all his parts were with Noron his life would be so much easier! Established more than 4 decades ago, today Noron Precision Machining, Inc. is a Woman Owned and operated business. Since its inception, the company has supported a diverse array of industries, and today this includes medical, microwave, aircraft, auto, computer peripheral, telecommunications, and biotech. During this past year’s COVID pandemic, Noron Precision was deemed an ‘Essential Business’, and it was tasked with manufacturing components for COVID testing equipment. Owner and CEO Debbie Williams, says, “We have long standing, 30-plus year relationships with several of our customers. We insist on 100 percent ontime delivery, superior quality, and excellent communications. We partner up with our customers and have an obligation to satisfy their demands and grow with them.” Noron Precision is well versed in machining plastics, such as PEEK, ABS, and Delrin, as well as metals including: aluminum, steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, and copper. Noron offers 5-axis CNC milling and turning, and millturn machines, to make small-to-medium sized components like housings, covers, slides, grippers, levers, mounts, caps, and flow cells. With its machining technology and team expertise, Noron holds very tight tolerances. Debbie and the team recognize the need for continuous improvement, and that has meant upgrading their machine tools over the past several years. Debbie says, “Engineers are leaning toward 5-axis design. Running those parts on a 5-axis is the only way to go because we are able to mill all sides without the need for a second op, thus preventing human error.” she said. “The complexity of parts steered us to buying more 5-axis.” As part of Noron’s pursuit of continuous improvement, Debbie says that the company investigated certifying to ISO 9001 some years ago. “We have been lucky, our current customers, including Tier 1 Aerospace, Medical and Defense customers, have grandfathered us in. Still, we knew it was something that would help our business internally and it would enable us to secure new customers.” Debbie says,“Years ago, we even hired a consultant, and quickly determined the consultant wasn’t a good fit for us.” Around this time, Debbie had seen Bretta Kelly, owner of BMSC and her colleague, Debbie Hart, on the cover of the A2Z Manufacturing magazine. “I was interested in them to help our company back then, but I thought we couldn’t afford them. They had to be Z MANUFACTURING SW • 52COAST • July •/ Aug A ZAMANUFACTURING WEST 10 •2021 JUNE- JULY 21 2

too good (and pricey) – they were on the cover after all.” Debbie saw BMSC on the cover once again last year, and Noron Precision still hadn’t certified. She said, “It was a sign. I had to contact them.” Debbie contacted Bretta this past October.“I immediately hired them, and with Covid, all of our meetings were virtual. Bretta and Debbie are just so good at what they do. It was so rewarding to find that their philosophy meshes with the way Noron conducts its business – we do what we say we will do.” Debbie continues, “Bretta and Debbie were always available, and our meetings were often on weekends and evenings.” Literally in a 6-month period, Noron successfully prepared for and achieved their ISO 9001: 2015 certification. Debbie says, “It will make many of our customers happy, and a somewhat surprising benefit is that it is helping us to streamline operations within our company.” Debbie says, “I just can’t say enough about how great BMSC was for our business —particularly their gift for simplifying the whole process. I recommend them to anyone and everyone I meet in the industry.” Bretta says, “Debbie was a dream client to work with; she wanted to be sure that we were able to understand every part of her business and how important customer satisfaction was to her. Debbie did not want us to just write something that would get her certified!” We decided to write Debbie’s system to be compliant with AS9100D / ISO 9001:2015, because she already met the additional requirements for the aerospace standard including additional traceability and comprehensive inspection processes. The impeccable performance to objectives and metrics made it easy to implement the aerospace standard. Are you ready to implement ISO 9001or AS9100? The Cost of Poor Manufacturing Quality and 5 Ways You Can Improve It

CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1

Ken Feitz

We have all heard the quality team referred to as the “brakes” or “bottleneck” of manufacturing but at the end of the day, what truly sets you apart from your competitors? Is it innovation? Operations? Speed? Hopefully, you have those things, but none of them really matter if your product isn’t perfect. Manufacturing quality is the key to differentiation and a competitive advantage. Manufacturing quality is about conformance to specifications – the design, the manufacturing process and the regulations. It doesn’t matter where the part is manufactured – in-house or with an external supplier. As customer expectations have gone up, manufacturing quality has become a necessary requirement. The bottom line is that manufacturing quality is a critical component of success. And poor manufacturing quality will be a downfall. High QA provides manufacturing quality management software (QMS) solutions that enable companies to efficiently create, manage and monitor all manufacturing quality requirements across produced parts A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

12 • JUNE- JULY 21

2:04:17 PM The cost of poor manufacturing quality is high. Product4/6/2020 failures, scrap and recalls will have a lasting negative effect on a manufacturer. Avoiding customer dissatisfaction, damaged reputations and low shareholder confidence from the beginning will aid in success. Products must meet design specifications, comply with industry regulations and meet customer expectations, the first time and every time to be competitive in global markets.

There are several things you can do to improve your manufacturing quality process. Here are 5 basic elements you should implement: 1 - Eliminate Interpretation Errors The quality process is rife with paper drawings and spreadsheets often with handwritten notes, coffee stains and smudges. Creating digital versions stored in a centralized database ensures that everyone is working from the same up-to-date data and all numbers and notes are clearly readable. 2 - Understanding Quality Beyond Pass/Fail Quality is not just at the end of the manufacturing process. By leveraging data throughout the manufacturing and quality process, potential issues can be identified and prevented before the final product is completed. Analyzing the data also provides knowledge of how processes are actually performing allowing for changes and adjustments.

3 - Automate Labor Intensive Processes Often similar templates and forms are needed for the quality process for each individual part. Creating a standard library helps eliminate wasted time re-creating each form or report. Many quality software management systems consolidate operations, templates, reporting and digital data to reduce the labor needed to complete tasks. 4 - Reduce Bottlenecks Monitoring and in-process data is vital to keeping an operation functioning. Is a certain process taking longer than was planned? Is a process identifying more issues than it should? Notification and correction of potential issues help ensure the manufacturing process will run smoothly. 5 - D eve l o p B e t t e r Q u a l i t y Documentation Standard and custom reports, including FAI, PPAP, SPC, NCR, should be easily accessible for all stakeholders who need that information. A company standard and a centralized database will help maintain consistency, accountability, traceability and repeatability. Quality parts are demanded by consumers. But maintaining manufacturing quality is a constant challenge for manufacturers. Investing in sound processes and technology that will put manufacturers

ahead of their competitors in the long run is a must. Don’t get left behind watching your competitors implement better processes and technology High QA™ provides integrated manufacturing quality management software (QMS) solutions for manufacturing companies of every size to streamline and cost-effectively manage quality processes and efficiently work in partnership with their entire supply chain. The innovative software solutions provide all the procedures, workflows, structures and resources needed to monitor, manage, communicate and document your manufacturing and quality processes. With High QA manufacturing quality management software solutions, your products are delivered within tolerance, comply with all applicable standards, and are made in less time with less mistakes. High QA supports the following key industries and compliance standards; Aerospace (AS9100/EN9100, AS9102), Automotive (QS-9000/ISO/ TS16949, APQP, AIAG guidance), Medical (21CFR, ISO 13485), Defense, Heavy Machinery, Oil and Energy and others with multiple best practice standards.

GE Aviation and Safran Launch Advanced Technology Demonstration Program for Sustainable Engines; Extend CFM Partnership to 2050 GE Aviation and Safran today launched a bold technology development program targeting more than 20 percent lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to today’s engines. The CFM RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines) program will demonstrate and mature a range of new, disruptive technologies for future engines that could enter service by the mid-2030s. “The relationship between GE and Safran today is the strongest it has ever been,” said John Slattery, President and CEO of GE Aviation. “Together, through the RISE technology demonstration program, we are reinventing the future of flight, bringing an advanced suite of revolutionary technologies to market that will take the next generation of single-aisle aircraft to a new level of fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. We fully embrace the sustainability imperative. As we have always done in the past, we will deliver for the future.” “Our industry is in the midst of the most challenging times we have ever faced,” said Olivier Andriès, CEO of Safran. “We have to act now to accelerate our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment. Since the early 1970s, breakthrough engine efficiency and reliability have been the hallmark of our historic partnership and our LEAP engine already

reduces emissions by 15 percent compared to previous generation engines. Through the extension of our CFM partnership to 2050, we are today reaffirming our commitment to work together as technology leaders to help our industry meet the urgent climate challenges.” Technologies matured as part of the RISE Program will serve as the foundation for the next-generation CFM engine that could be available by the mid-2030s.The program goals include reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by more than 20 percent compared to today’s most efficient engines, as well as ensuring 100 percent compatibility with alternative energy sources such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels and hydrogen. Central to the program is state-of-the-art propulsive efficiency for the engine, including developing an open fan architecture. This is a key enabler to achieving significantly improved fuel efficiency while delivering the same speed and cabin experience as current single-aisle aircraft. The program will also use hybrid electric capability to optimize engine efficiency while enabling electrification of many aircraft systems. The program is being led by a joint GE/Safran engineering team that has laid out a comprehensive technology roadmap including composite fan blades, heat resistant metal alloys, ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), hybrid electric capability and additive manufacturing. The RISE program includes more than 300 separate component, module and full engine builds. A demonstrator engine is scheduled to begin testing at GE and Safran facilities around the middle of this decade and flight test soon thereafter. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

“I was very excited to see that Dr. Tony Schmitz would be overseeing the training. I took his advanced manufacturing class last year, so I knew this training program would be great.” After completing the online program, Stian felt he acquired a thorough introduction to the steps required to machine parts, but decided to sign up for the week-long, in-person CNC machining bootcamp to gain hands-on experience. “For many applications, additive manufacturing must be paired with machining to achieve required tolerances, surface finishes, etc.,” he said. “To achieve a well-rounded understanding of what can be achieved with additive manufacturing, I felt like I needed an introduction to machining.” Before even completing the full bootcamp, Stian said he was impressed by the efficiency of the course, adding that he learned an incredible amount even though he invested just one week of his time.

“Machining has a language all its own. Although I’m sure there is a lot more for me to learn, I feel much more confident in my machining vocabulary, which will make it easier for me to communicate with machining experts.” As a bonus, Stian added, “Two certified machinists were part of my cohort this week, and they shared some awesome experiences that showed me the importance of understanding the fundamentals of machining.”

The machine tool education and workforce development training for ACE is led by IACMI. The ACE CNC Machining Training program uses virtual training and machining simulation to teach essential manufacturing skills— all designed to help tackle the nation’s skills gap and recover its technical and manufacturing leadership position.Through ACE, IACMI has partnered with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT) and Pellissippi State Community College (PSCC), also in Knoxville, to pilot a new, no-cost CNC machining training opportunity. The training uses a modular, interactive, learn-at-your-own-pace course on modern CNC machining fundamentals. No prior machining experience is required. More than 1,400 people from across the U.S. are engaged in the online training that began in December 2020.The six-hour online curriculum walks

users through the steps necessary to set up for machining a component, up to the point of engaging with the machine. It introduces new technology advancements being developed at ORNL with partners like MSC Industry Supply to reduce expensive trial and error and increase productivity and efficiency of current machine tools.

IACMI ACETraining Teaches Essential Manufacturing Skills To Address U.S. Machining Workforce Gap It is all part of America’s Cutting Edge (ACE), a national initiative for machine tool technology development, advancement, and workforce development. Established by the U.S. Department of Defense Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) Program from the Office of Industrial Policy, ACE is designed to revitalize U.S. manufacturing and ramp up the machine tool industry in support of national security. “ACE is intended to help the United S t a t e s r e c ov e r the technical and manufacturing leadership position and enable our ability to design and make the machine tools required to produce so many of the products that are used in modern society,” Adele Ratcliff, IBAS program director, said. The ACE bootcamps now underway in eastTennessee are teaching essential manufacturing skills that will address the nation’s growing manufacturing workforce gap through combining the scientific expertise of collaborative public and private enterprises who are working to restore and stabilize U.S. manufacturing. The machine tool research and development for ACE is based at ORNL, whose Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) is a global leader in developing and validating systems and processes that leverage digital frameworks for manufacturing innovation. “We must close the workforce gap in the U.S. when it comes to machine tool resources, especially as it applies to computer-aided manufacturing (CAM),” said John Hopkins, IACMI chief executive officer. “We’re providing new machine tool instruction and simulation software to enable the creativity, optimization, and efficiency potential of digital manufacturing. To effectively produce tomorrow’s creator-makers, we must increase awareness of manufacturing, and instill a passion for creativity and making.” The ACE CNC machining training program is a two-part, no-cost course. It combines in-person learning with online, virtual training, and machining simulation to teach essential manufacturing skills and introduce the newly developed technology that accelerates competency and optimizes the machine’s performance. In December 2020, IACMI launched the online machining component developed by UT Professor of Mechanical Engineering and ORNL Joint Faculty Member Tony Schmitz.

Curved geometry disrupts focus and lighting – small defects demand high-resolution macro images. The team’s robotic inspection system automatically partitions and images the part section by section. A bitmasking procedure then extracts only the useful, in-focus areas. To create the key automation feature for the inspection task, the team built a modular and adaptive system architecture integrating imaging and AI inspection with robot motion control. A software platform centered on the Robotic Operation System, or ROS, ensures flexibility for other industries and extensibility for continued research discoveries.

With controlled-environment data collection, subregion bitmasking, and image preprocessing, the team then built deep transfer learning methods to create the machine intelligence required for high-resolution aerospace inspection. Using only very limited aerospace data, the team achieved consistent detection rates above 95% – beyond conventional human limits in precision inspection. The developed inspection robot also works at an impressive speed of approximately one minute per part, amplifying the throughput rate by more than three folds. Collectively, the developed robotic inspector is expected to yield a 345% return of investment if deployed at one site. Furthermore, the number is expected to increase to 1870% if the technology is scaled up to 8 sites, or 3012% at 20 sites. The return of investment could be 17 months, or as small as 2 months if scaled to 20 sites. The team not only engineered automated data collection and the inspection AI to the performance limit, but also made scientific inquiries to create and control the source of illumination, so that even when environmental disturbances occur, lighting remains consistent at the location of the part. These highlights are only elements from a large set of potentially gamechanging impacts. A visual-centric data flow is also immediately interpretable for human-robot collaboration, and traceable to other process steps from machining to polishing, leading to costeffective implementation and quality assurance in the production of entire engines and aircrafts. GKN Aerospace is adopting the technology, and has already built the developed inspection cell in a factory on the east coast. The team is in the process of creating multiple additional extension features for adapting the system to other components involving more defect types to classify, larger footprints, and/or welded components. So, you can have the largest inventory of high quality sealing solutions and tooling solutions but if repair and machine shops have to wait a week, how can they stay competitive? Getting parts the next day is a competitive edge! Kurt Kocik, Director of U.S. Sales & Marketing says, “You’ve got to work harder, stay longer, and do what you say.

Hercules remains the most powerful name in the distribution of aftermarket hydraulic equipment parts. Hercules has mastered distribution for nearly 6 decades, supplying superior quality replacement parts and last year they made another commitment to their customers by adding a large array of metal working products. Hercules now offers a comprehensive line of drills, taps, end mills, countersinks, dies, band saw blades, carbide inserts and holders, honing stones, and rotary thread repair tooling. Hercules is an ISO 9001 registered distributor, dedicated to industry best practices. Quality control begins at the loading dock with strict inspection of incoming products. From there products enter Hercules ‘Total Quality Management and Continuous Improvement Program’ to ensure all processes and procedures are performed accurately. Hercules’ 120,000 square foot facility in Louisville, Kentucky features advanced automation and a robotic picking system with 70 autostore robots and 12 pick ports with 26,205 autostore bins and they work from a large $17 million plus inventory. They process over 1400 orders per day, 95% on the same day to get parts and tools to their customer team next day. Hercules is proud of their associations with top quality tool manufacturers, and they now have their own private label brand of machining products under the name of ‘CLEARCUT’. These tools are made in the USA and Hercules has opted to go with high quality tooling versus throw away tooling. Hercules has also partnered with global powerhouses like Korloy for carbide inserts and Wikus for band saw blades. The combined Hercules inventory from seals to end mills is over 17 million dollars and maintained to support their vast customer base.

Machine it From Scratch What does the next 5 years look like for Hercules? According to Kurt Kocik the future looks very bright, especially for the Western United States, as Kurt has strategically positioned key sales professionals in major cities in the western region to provide the best in customer service for the highest quality machining tools. Kurt says, “Hercules already has the best distribution network, we just need to continue applying this business model to the ‘metalworking tools’ side of the business, make our new customers very happy, and thus complete the loop for greater customer support.”

A Brief History of Hercules Hercules Sealing Products was founded 59 years ago in Clearwater Florida as a byproduct of a seal manufacturer from Buffalo, New York called Hercules Products. At that time, OEM cylinder manufacturers lacked sufficient support for aftermarket repairs. The founder of Hercules realized that there was a niche for aftermarket seal kits and built a company to serve those manufacturing sectors. Today Hercules is one of the leading distributors of aftermarket hydraulic equipment repair parts on the planet. Hercules Sealing Products has been a subsidiary of Diploma PLC since 1995, a major publicly traded company based in London, England specializing in three sectors. These are life sciences, controls, and the sector that Hercules operates in: hydraulic and pneumatic seals. Under the Diploma banner, Hercules belongs to a family of seal companies called the Hercules Fluid Power Group that distributes sealing solutions in two key markets. Half of the members of this group are focused on the distribution of industrial OEM products and the other side, including Hercules, specializes in the distribution of aftermarket parts and machine tools. Customers depend on Hercules to provide seal solutions for equipment in a broad range of industries including construction, mining, agriculture, dump and refuse, logging, and industrial applications. Roughly 400 people are employed across the entire Hercules Fluid Power Group, 200 support Hercules Sealing Products serving thousands of customers throughout the United States, Canada, Central, and South America.

The U.S. Navy is moving to rip the high-tech—but useless—guns out of its three Zumwalt-class cruisers and, in their place, install launchers for the fleet’s still-in-development hypersonic missile. The Navy’s proposal, buried in the service’s budget proposal for 2022, would install a dozen so-called Conventional Prompt Strike missiles on each of the Zumwalts, giving the massive vessels a significant land-attack capability. The Navy is asking Congress for $1.4 billion in 2022 in order to continue developing the CPS missile and begin adding it to the Zumwalts. The service previously announced it would fit the 35-inch-diameter, two-stage missile in multi-purpose launch tubes that it’s installing on the new “Block V” version of the Virginia-class submarine. The first of the BlockVVirginias should be ready with CPS as early as 2028, according to budget documents. It might take a little longer to modify the Zumwalts to carry the missile. “Efforts in [fiscal year] 2022 include continued development of the weapon system and flight subsystem, platform integration and advanced research and development to support future spiral development capabilities such as enhanced warhead, advanced communication, alternative navigation and terminal sensor technology,” the Navy explained. At nearly 40 feet in length, the Conventional Prompt Strike is a big weapon. It has to be in order to contain both the first-stage booster and the second-stage container for the hypersonic glide vehicle carrying the weapon’s seeker and warhead. The booster propels the glider to hypersonic speed—five times the speed of sound or faster.

class from 32 ships to just three. The Navy canceled the Long-Range Land-Attack Projectile in 2016 after calculating that each shell would cost $800,000. That’s nearly as much as a cruise missile with a range of hundreds of miles. The cancellation left the $7 billion-apiece Zumwalts without a large-caliber gun—and without a primary mission. In 2018, the Navy announced the cruisers would assume a new mission. Sailing from San Diego with loads of Tomahawk and SM-6 anti-ship missiles, the Zumwalts would function as long-range ship-killers, capable of sinking enemy vessels from hundreds of miles away.

Six hundred feet long and displacing 16,000 tons of water, the Zumwalts are huge ships. They displace nearly twice as much as the Burkes do. But that doesn’t mean the cruisers with their distinctive, downward-sloping hulls have a lot of empty space. In fact, to fit a dozen CPS tubes, the Navy plans to carve out the two 155-millimeter guns presently sitting in the bow of each Zumwalt. The Advanced Gun System once was the raison d’etre of the Zumwalt program. The unique gun was supposed to fire precision-guided shells out to a distance of more than 80 miles, allowing the cruisers to bombard enemy beaches from beyond range of many land-based defenses. But the Navy developed AGS separately from its ammunition. And the ammunition grew more expensive as the sailing branch cut the Zumwalt

Adding hypersonic missiles bolters the class’s secondary land-attack capability. While the Tomahawk and SM-6 also can strike ground targets, the CPS has much greater range—more than 1,700 miles. In, say, a battle over Taiwan, Zumwalts sailing in the Philippine Sea east of Taiwan could bombard Chinese ports and airfields while also taking shots at the Chinese A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Large Floating OffshoreWind Turbineconcept For 12Mw Floating OffshoreWind Turbine To Expand Power Generation

Efforts are underway to develop a new generation of floating wind turbines that would enable larger and more powerful installations that would dramatically expand the range for offshore wind power generation. The goal of the effort is to make it possible to go beyond the current limits of fixed-bottom installations to lower the cost of installing larger, more powerful floating wind turbines beyond the current dept limits. GE researchers provided details of an ongoing two-year, $4 million research project through the ARPA-E’s ATLANTIS (AerodynamicTurbines Lighter and Afloat with Nautical Technologies and Integrated Servocontrol) program to design and develop advanced controls to support a 12 MW floating offshore wind turbine. GE is partnering on the project with Glosten, the developer of the PelaStar tension-leg platform floating wind turbine foundation. “With GE’s Haliade-X, the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine built to date, we’re just beginning to tap into the future promise of offshore wind power in Europe, the US, and other parts of the globe,” said Rogier Blom, a Senior Principal Engineer in Model-Based Controls and the project’s principal investigator. “Today, these fixed-bottom wind turbines are limited to depths of 60 meters or less. With floating turbines, we would be able to dramatically expand the reaches of offshore wind power to areas with water depths of 60 meters or greater.” Accelerating the development of new technologies to promote the future of floating offshore wind energy is the key objective of ARPA-E’s Atlantis program. By coupling a 12 MW GE turbine with Glosten’s tension leg platform technology, the team is seeking to address the challenge of designing a lightweight floating turbine with up to 35 percent less mass in the tower and the floating platform. This is expected to result in a very significant reduction of the resulting Levelized Cost of Energy – LCOE – of the electricity generated with this turbine. Bloom notes though that the enormity of building a floating platform that can support a structure as massive as an 850-plus foot offshore turbine cannot be understated.

“Designing a floating turbine is like putting a bus on a tall pole, making it float and then stabilizing it while it interacts with wind and waves. Doing this well is both a design and controls challenge,” said Bloom. “Through our ATLANTIS project with ARPA-E, we will be concurrently designing the controls system with the design of the floating structure itself to advance Floating Offshore Wind Energy toward becoming a future commercially viable solution.” Enabling the next generation of floating offshore wind turbines would dramatically expand the power generation potential of offshore wind power. The National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), estimates that the introduction of floating turbines would expand the potential of U.S. offshore wind resources to more than 7,000 TeraWatt hours (TWhs) per year, nearly double the total annual US energy consumption of 4,000TWh.

Ge Eyes 100% Hydrogen-Fuelled Power Plants By 2030

By Frédéric Simon

“Today, we have a 50% hydrogen capability for combustion in our largest baseload gas turbines” used for power generation, said Martin O’Neill, vice president at GE Gas Power. The company’s objective, he explained, is to continue research and development in order “to advance the percentage of hydrogen combustion capability towards 100% by 2030,” he told a EURACTIV event earlier this month. However, getting there would require a rapid scale up in the production of clean hydrogen, he added. And that will only be possible if multiple sources of low-carbon hydrogen are added to the mix, including socalled “blue hydrogen” where emissions are somehow captured and stored. In July last year, the European Commission unveiled proposals to develop 100% clean hydrogen production from renewable electricity, with plans to install at least 6 gigawatts of electrolysers in the EU by 2025 and at least 40 gigawatts by 2030. More than 95% of hydrogen today is produced from natural gas steam reforming, a carbon-intensive process which adds to global warming emissions. “We think the mix of carbon capture and sequestration now in a decade of action, with layered introduction of blue and green hydrogen is the future,” O’Neill said. In that perspective, “gas turbine power generation technology becomes a destination technology, not just a bridge,” he added. “But we need to act now,” he insisted, calling for “policy incentives and mechanisms” in order to “get emissions reduction immediately instead of waiting for technology to come to scale 10,15, or 20 years from now”. The European Union has agreed tougher climate goals for 2030 and 2050, as part of plans to become climate neutral by mid-century. While this is hastening the demise of coal, attention is now turning to fossil gas, which overtook lignite as the largest source of power sector emissions in 2020, according to recent data. The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Indomitable Spirits

By Stephen Hannemann

Photo courtesy of 3D Plastics – As a manufacturer’s rep, Newberg, OR I am associated with ten companies that I represent and interact within the marinade of companies they support. We are collectively grateful, not for the pain, uncertainty, and in some cases pure lunacy of the previous 18 months, but for the fact we are still viable businesses, and in some cases, thriving again. How is this possible? One word, Attitude! An indomitable human spirit is one of the most incredible of God’s gifts to humanity. Collectively these spirits can and will propel an organization into an unstoppable juggernaut. These “I-Spirits,” as I call them, view unforeseen challenges as opportunities to problem solve, to learn something new, to personally grow, to expect and witness the positive outcomes. They are visionaries but most of all, when all is said and done, Photo courtesy of Pacific Swiss – and the dust has settled, they Clackamas, OR are gratified by the experience. I love watching and listening to Simon Sinek. Simon is on Linked-In daily. A month ago, during one of his interviews he made a statement regarding motivate vs. inspire. He said something along the lines of, “I would much rather inspire, than try to motivate.” The inference was if you need to motivate your personnel, you should probably have a talk with your human resource manager. It is the inspired men and women in businesses and their determined and committed work forces I am describing that have survived the past 18 months. They are the ones who went farther above and beyond for their customers than ever before. Collectively they would not allow themselves or their businesses to be victimized by circumstances. they’re grateful, not for the hardship, but grateful for being part of an organization filled with I-Spirits having been able to respond to a mercurial business environment, to be creative and maneuver weekly changing regulations, to successfully deal with supply chains as they tightened or even evaporated, while still meeting their customers’ needs.

Just this week I read an article touting the fact that some sectors of manufacturing are nearly only 10 percent away from pre-pandemic production rates. These milestones are being bravely accomplished in the face of seriously industry-wide workforce shortages. How is this conundrum taking place? A committed and dedicated army of indomitable spirits have caried the day. A group of men and women whose spirits are fulfilled and richly rewarded by hard work and who relish the sense of pride at accomplishing great things in spite of overwhelming odds.

There is not enough room to shout out all our principals on this page, however, I wish to thank all industries represented by SMH for their enduring indomitable spirits and their tremendous contributions to our ongoing manufacturing recovery. For more information regarding any of the well vetted companies represented by SMH Inc., visit www.smhincllc. com, email stephen@smhincllc.com or phone 425.501.7342.
