Editor’s Corner Standing Still is Actually Moving Backwards “Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” Martin Luther King Jr. “To me, I will be a stronger person if I’m moving forward, doing the work I want, and continue to drive: force the purpose that I want to create versus doing what other people think I should be doing, which is never a way to live.” Payal Kadakia The United States story has been on the evolution of moving forward since its beginning. Our forefathers all stumbled, some fell, and the American dream willpower drove us forward and propelled us to another day and a better way. But what about the other 7.4 billion people on planet earth? There has always been a left and a right, a Yin and a Yang, and for the last 61 years, 50 states with their own state flag, flying beside their team flag, the USA flag.We tend to forget we are individuals, on the same team, and an integral part of humans, on planet earth. As individuals we strive for what’s best for us in order to meet our potential, and to feel worthy of the air we breathe. We all experience physical, mental, and spiritual roadblocks on our journey forward, but we must keep moving forward. As individuals we realize we are part of a large group of humans co-residing on earth with shorter and longer fingers and toes. Earthlings vary in stature, language, beliefs, color, and ego. If you came from another planet to earth you might look at these very similar earthlings and say to yourself; they all look alike. This would be a valid statement coming from an extraterrestrial and something most of us take for granted every day. We are similar. Forward thinking, and moving forward as an individual gives us a great opportunity to sneak a peek over our shoulder and look at where we came from in order to measure our progress. We also grow healthier in the mind, body, and soul department as we socialize with our fellow earthlings. The terrestrial team of the future will look even more alike, and will uplift and edify their teammates, while pushing forward to a better today ensuring tomorrows’ positive evolution. As a citizen of earth we see change comes in the proportions of the equivalence we are able to crawl or walk. People are all different, but all the same. Universal diversity. As we all take our 365-day ride in space around the sun we need to put things in perspective. It has taken millions of years to get where we are today and most everything in this world changes every day. We need to peddle that bike forward and if we fall down, dust ourselves off, get back on and pay attention, focus, peddle the bike. We need to eventually fly to the greatest heights of our imagined self and our united oneness. We must not worry about where our team is in the evolutionary process, but offer terrestrials a helping hand when we can, keeping the other hand for ourselves, remaining focused on our purpose and our gift as a being, in a world of near 8 billion similar people. Until next issue, God bless all of our first responders, troops, and the great people that help us keep pedaling forward.Thank you for your continued support of our manufacturing magazines.

SEA CHANGE Monday was World Ocean Day, and the Ocean Renewable Energy Action Coalition (OREAC) was thinking big: The group announced its “vision” of generating 1,400 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2050, seeking to drive down carbon emissions and generate employment, including a “green recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.” Led by major players in the offshore wind industry, including GE Renewable Energy, OREAC was formed in 2019 in response to a call for ocean-based climate action. It’s already got the wind at its back: The offshore industry has grown 30% over the last decade, with 30 GW of installed capacity around the world. There’s a way to go till 1,400 GW, of course, but — said Benj Sykes, a representative of the Danish offshore wind developer Ørsted — right now we’re seeing “just the tip of the iceberg for the massive growth potential of offshore wind.” The power of wind: One of the ways Ørsted is contributing to the growth potential includes plans for two huge offshore wind farms off the U.S. East Coast. With an installed capacity totaling 1,220 megawatts, they’ll rely on GE Renewable Energy’s Haliade-X 12 MW offshore wind turbine platform — the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine, which is currently spinning through certification tests in the Port of Rotterdam. The machine’s rotor and 12-MW generator can capture and convert enough wind into electricity to supply 16,000 European homes, making it an attractive piece of technology not just in the U.S. but around the world; the Haliade-X has also been selected for the North Sea’s 3.6-GW Dogger Bank installation, which will be the world’s largest offshore wind project. In 2019, Time magazine named the Haliade-X as one of its best inventions of the year. Learn more here about the development of the Haliade-X offshore wind turbine platform, and here about OREAC’s ambitious wind energy goals. THE FATHER OF INVENTION Today, GE machines produce one-third of the world’s electricity; 90% of power transmission utilities worldwide use the company’s technology; and 40% of the world’s energy is managed by its software. But there’s more. Edison’s light bulb also illuminated other breakthroughs. Avatars of the carbon filament Edison used in his early bulbs are being pressed into service as jet engine components. GE replaced the metal fan blades of its most

powerful jet engines with their carbonfiber composite counterpar ts for lighter and therefore more fuel-efficient aircraft. Engineers are exploring more applications for this wonder material: as the building blocks for record-breaking wind turbine blades, for instance, and for use in medical imaging machines. The X-ray machine, too, can trace its origin to Edison’s inventive genius: GE co-founder Elihu Thomson rejiggered the Edison light bulb to emit X-rays, leading to the dramatic ability to peek inside the human body — a revolution in healthcare. platform that allows for two large adults and stuff, or one large adult and a lot of stuff, and that is not much bigger than a motorcycle,” Frohnmayer said. “This is the patent that underpins all our products. As a smaller new vehicle entrant, having intellectual property protection is important. We don’t want a big player to come in and roll over us.” Frohnmayer was reached by phone in Fortuna, California, as he returned to Oregon after delivering FUVs in Southern California, including one to an entertainment-industry celebrity who he declined to name. After shutting down production completely in March — at about the time its stock had sunk to an all-time low $0.97 — Arcimoto returned to “low-volume production” in May. More than half its 108-person workforce is on the job, some in the Eugene factory, others at home working on plans to scale up production. Frohnmayer said that more of the vehicles, outfitted for deliveries but also promoted for general utility use, have gone out for pilot testing.

The company also announced that it would work with the Michigan firm Munro & Associates “to evaluate Arcimoto’s manufacturing processes and supply chain management in order to drive down costs and begin high-volume production of Arcimoto ultra-efficient electric vehicles.” Munro & Associates is headed up by Sandy Munro, who has been in the news recently for his reverse engineering of Tesla vehicles, including the new ModelY, shared recently in a series of YouTube videos.

“Often appearing on-camera in a face mask, Mr. Munro has become an EV folk hero during the pandemic, genially detailing the Y’s breakthroughs while reminding the ‘boys and girls’ watching to ‘tip those cashiers,’” the Wall Street Journal reported. Munro’s unique style was evident in the quote he supplied for the press release announcing his company would work with Arcimoto: “OK, let’s start off with the fun part. This is a fun trike, no question about it! It is definitely not your grandpa’s electric three wheeler ... unless I am your grandpa. Munro is very excited to be part of this new adventure, this new way of traveling. We can hardly wait to get started. I look forward to doing everything I can to make this vehicle as profitable as possible. Have a great day, and go buy one!” By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal

CMM Revo Half Page Final.indd 1 Here Are Some Oregon Companies Making PPE

Looptworks usually makes bags and accessories from discarded material. Since the pandemic started, it’s been churning out protective equipment. The Portland-based company is one of several Oregon businesses that have retooled assembly lines to mass-produce masks and other protective gear. At first, the companies focused on supplying hospitals and medical offices. As the state’s economy reopens, they’re pivoting to serve businesses that need protective equipment for workers. Other local companies making masks include Portland-based Spooltown, which is selling 10-packs of masks for $100, and Portland-based North St Bags, which is selling 50-packs for $200.The contract arm of Salem-based N.W. Alpine is accepting large orders. Spooltown owners Dana Hinger and Sara Tunstall said the company has hundreds of masks ready to ship. “Being a factory, we focused on getting lots of locally made masks to local folks versus selling direct to consumers,” Tunstall said, in an email. “It just seemed to us that mask wearing was around to stay and really ... people need to start thinking of them like socks. Once you’re out and about in the world again, you need more than one — you actually need quite a lot of them per person.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

2:04:17 PM Portland Garment Factory, one of the first companies to4/6/2020 start marking PPE for hospital workers, is selling 24-packs of masks for $223, reversible masks for $15 and scarf-like masks for $34. The factory’s 24-packs include the option of adding company logos.

Founder and CEO Britt Howard said Portland Garment Factory made 30,000 medical masks before shifting to masks appropriate for an office. She’s offering discounts on mask purchases to B-corps and businesses owned by people of color. “Demand is robust since so many doctors/leaders/smart people have told the greater public that a mask is a necessity,” Howard said in an email. Like others, Portland Garment Factory also is donating masks. The website of Business Oregon, the state’s economic development arm, has a complete list of Oregon companies making protective equipment. Spooltown’s Tunstall said she hopes the pandemic has reminded people about the importance of local supply chains and manufacturing jobs. “Having those close relationships with manufacturers and maintaining them even when we’re not in a global crisis is how we have access to folks that can pivot on a dime, prioritize local needs, and fill in when there’s a gap,” she said. “China isn’t going to give a damn about your business when there’s a global supply chain break, but we will.”

Looptworks founder and CEO Scott Hamlin said it wasn’t too difficult for his company to make masks. The company upcycles: It makes new products, such as pillows, from discarded material, such as old sports uniforms.

Boeing hasn’t made since the 2008 financial crisis. The deals will support the U.S. government’s foreign military sales, the Chicago-based company said in a statement.

The company’s 16 sewers are largely remote. To make masks, it had to find material, then provide patterns to sewers. Looptworks was able to use surplus operating room material provided by hospitals. It found a local foundry to stamp out nose pieces made from recycled aluminum.

Boeing declined to identify the countries who are buying the missile weapons, which will be produced at its defense facilities in St. Charles, Missouri. But the deals are good news for the beleaguered jet maker, whose commercial aircraft business has sagged because of the pandemic.

The company has made more than 140,000 masks. Hamlin said he’s been careful to avoid being seen as a profiteer.

“We are pleased to continue our long legacy of partnering with the Navy to build weapons that defend America and its international partners,” Boeing Weapons vice president Cindy Gruensfelder said in a Boeing statement about the contract wins.

“We didn’t want to sound opportunistic,” he said. “This is just an extension of a product category for us. Our business is still the same. Our values are still the same.”

“These awards will not only extend production of the Harpoon program through 2026, they will also restart the production line for SLAM-ER and ensure deliveries through 2028,” Gruensfelder added.

Boeing Wins $3.1B Navy Deals, Some For Missiles It Hasn’t Made Since 2008 Recession

Boeing last delivered the SLAM-ER weapon system in 2008, the company said.

Boeing said it’s been awarded $3.1 billion worth of defense contracts to produce two different missile weapon systems for foreign government buyers.

In October 2019, however, Boeing started construction on a new 35,000 square-foot manufacturing facility to support increased production for the Harpoon and SLAM-ER programs.

Long Accredited To Nadcap For Plating.... And Now Announcing Nadcap Accreditation For Heat Treating

If your Copper, Copper alloys or Stainless Steel parts are very small, ultra precision and require Nadcap accredited plating, likely you consider Foresight Finishing to be an integral supplier to your business. The company, based in Tempe, Arizona for the past decade, specializes in plating connector contacts, RF components and loose piece contacts. Typical parts have tolerances as tight as +/- .0002. The finished parts pictured in the blue container to the right measure .1481” in length and .012” in diameter, and there are approximately 10,000 of these parts. Parts on the left are a result of Foresights pristine pre-clean and heat treat process. Casey Weizel, co-founder with his brother Joe, says, “Our customers all across the United States have been utilizing our Nadcap accredited plating processes, but major OEMs are now starting to flow down Nadcap heat treat in the electronics industry. For the past few years, we’ve had a number of customers request that we add heat-treating to our list of competencies. 2 years ago, we brought heat treat in-house, and we perfected the process for the ultra small precision parts that are the cornerstone of our business. The contacts and connectors Foresight plates are typically used in the Aerospace and Defense industries. As such, just like plating for these industries requires Nadcap accreditation, they would also require Nadcap for heat-treating. Casey says, “We’ve been heat treating for the past couple of years, but only for customers who didn’t require Nadcap accreditation. That being said, it has always been part of our business plan to achieve Nadcap accreditation for heat treating.” He added, “Our customers regularly tell us that standard heat treat companies who heat treat larger parts are not set up to handle ultra precision small parts.” Casey and Joe enlisted the help of Rod Beverley to spearhead the company’s preparation for Nadcap accreditation for heat treat. Rod says, “6 months ago we began the difficult process of accreditation, and in June of this year, we were A2Z MANUFACTURING SW •

successfully Nadcap accredited for heat treating.” Today, customers who machine very small parts that require both heat treat and plating, Nadcap accreditation, can simplify the number of companies in their supply chain and send their parts to Foresight Finishing. Casey says, “A major challenge that is witnessed across the electronics industry is plating coverage on the insides of small heat-treated beryllium copper parts. One can have the best plating chemistry in the world, but heat treat scale and parts not cleaned properly prior to heat treat is often a major contributor to this issue.” He adds, “Foresight Finishing has in process inspection that validates the cleaning of heat-treated components so we don’t go to plating with contaminated ID’s. However, this does not correct the problem — it only identifies it, until now. The combination of Foresight’s small parts plating line, pre-clean process and vacuum furnace provides our platers with a bright, pristine, oxide free surface that eliminates harsh cleaning cycles that can undersize and etch parts. Foresight’s heat-treating process creates a surface that accepts the plating deposit willingly instead of hampering it.” Joe says, “Before we opened our plating business in Arizona, both Casey and I had worked for many years plating in Minnesota, where we grew up.We learned much about the process, and we also knew that one of the key differentiators we could offer our customers over other platers was state of the art technology and processes. Foresight Finishing’s plating processes and equipment are best in class. The prep processing we’ve instituted prior to plating significantly reduces our turn around times. When we made the decision to add heat-treating to our business, we applied these same principles. Our built in cleaning processes help to ensure that the parts that we heat treat

are free of debris and oils. When we heat treat and plate a part, our prep and clean process can take 30 minutes. In comparison, if we plate a part that hasn’t been properly cleaned by an outside heat treater, the cleaning process can take hours or even days de-scaling the parts.” Joe says, “We did research prior to investing in our heat treat oven. We wanted to ensure our oven would be the best fit for the type of parts we plate. In our analysis, we determined that we would purchase a vacuum heat treating oven, as we learned it could reduce cleaning cycle times by as much as 70%.” Rod says, “We offer some of the most competitive heat treat prices and turnaround available in the market. Our heat treat and hardness testing lot charges are $275 for heat treat and $100 for hardness testing. In the market, our customers have told us that they paid $350 for heat treat and $150 for hardness testing.” He added, “We also hear from our customers that 2-3 weeks turnaround for their parts to be heat treated is the norm. We are running 24x7, and with the best equipment, so we are able to offer 3-5 day turnaround for heat treating and plating. Casey says, “Within our Quality Metrics, we are achieving 98.9% on-time delivery and 99.6% quality.” He adds, “When our customers bring us their parts for heat treat and plating, they will see many advantages over using two different suppliers, one for heat treat and one for plating. We can provide reduced variability in the process, we can control cleanliness throughout both processes, and we can reduce their turnaround times. When you add this to extremely competitive pricing, I think we’ve got an outstanding solution for customers new and old.” Prior to starting the Heat Treat division in their company, Joe and Casey solicited colleagues for recommendations on a hire. Casey says, “Mary Treiny came highly recommended, and we brought her on-board to get the heat treat division up and running.” He added, “Mary has done an outstanding job, and we are proud to say that through her efforts, we have the best heat treat facility for ultra precision parts around.” Rod adds,” When you add an oven to Nadcap accreditation, it doubles or even triples the accreditation process, it is just that difficult. I think our successful accreditation to Nadcap for heat treat is a testament to both Mary and the company owners’ drive for continuous improvement. I know our customers value what we have put in place to make their jobs just a little more simplified.” If Foresight Finishing isn’t one of your suppliers, and you have plating and heat-treating requirement, visiting their new facility, purchased 3 years ago, should be a must. I am confident you will not see a special processing facility, with plating and heat-treating, that is as immaculate as you will encounter in this 14,000 sq. ft. state of the art business.

Amazon Moves To Boost Its Boeing Prime Air Fleet Amazon said it’s adding a dozen more Boeing jets to its fast-growing Prime Air operation, expanding its fleet of winged merchandise movers by 17% to help improve deliveries during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Seattle-based company announced it is leasing 12 Boeing 767300 converted cargo aircraft from Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) of Wilmington, Ohio. The new aircraft will join Amazon’s existing fleet of 70 767 widebody jets and smaller 737 freighters. One of the 767s already joined Amazon’s air cargo operations in May, Amazon said, while the remaining 11 will be delivered in 2021. The terms of the deal were not disclosed by either company.Amazon is a shareholder in ATSG. Amazon Global Air Vice President Sarah Rhoads said the fleet expansion will help her company improve rapid delivery of goods to its legions of customers during the pandemic. “During a time when so many of our customers rely on us to get what they need without leaving their homes, expanding our dedicated air network ensures we have the capacity to deliver what our customers A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

want: great selection, low prices and fast delivery,” Rhoads said in a statement. “Amazon Air is critical to ensuring fast delivery for our customers – both in the current environment we are facing and beyond,” Rhoads added. The deal is also a boon to Boeing Global Services, the jet maker’s unit that offers standalone parts and services for its older aircraft like the 767s that are still in service. The availability of more retired 767 passenger airplanes appears to have facilitated the deal, and the Amazon deal appears to have been in the works for months. Until the global collapse in aviation, companies competed aggressively to buy and convert retired 767 passenger jets to freighters. But with airlines parking dozens of such planes and or retiring them, so-called “feedstock” is more available to companies like ATSG. ATSG has agreements with Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. to convert the Boeing 767 passenger aircraft into a standard configured freighter aircraft, ATSG has revealed in SEC filings. Such conversions primarily consist of installing a standard cargo door and loading system on the airplanes after old passenger seats are ripped out. In its annual 10K SEC filing, ATSG revealed in late March it had secured 12 767 aircraft that “were in or awaiting the modification process” and that it had placed $15 million in non-refundable deposits to buy 10 more Boeing 767-300 passenger aircraft through 2021.

their relationship as competitors.

Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG signed an agreement to cooperate on the development of new commercial vehicles. The pact was announced in July 2019 and formalized June 1.The cooperative effort does not include any exchanges of company ownership, and the two companies maintain

The partnership involves several projects, including a medium pickup truck which will be built by Ford and sold by Volkswagen, a Ford electric vehicle built on Volkswagen’s modular electric drive system to be sold in Europe, and new commercial vehicles for both companies. The commercial vehicles will include a 1-ton cargo van made by Ford and a city delivery van based on the Volkswagen Caddy. Both companies will also work with Argo AI, a Pittsburgh-based autonomous driving company, to form their own autonomous-vehicle businesses. Ford already had ownership and development interests in the company, whichVolkswagen invested in last week.According to Ford,Argo AI’s self-driving system is the first such system with plans for deployment in both the U.S. and Europe. “This alliance comes at a time of tremendous enthusiasm about the intersection of increasingly intelligent, connected vehicles in an eversmarter world,” said Jim Hackett, CEO of Ford. Volkswagen Group CEO Dr. Herbert Diess said the companies’ joint effort would allow both to cheaply develop and distribute electric and commercial vehicles. “This collaboration will efficiently drive down development costs, allowing broader global distribution of electric and commercial vehicles, and enhance the positions of both companies,” said Diess. Both companies have their eye on saving costs and carbon emissions. “In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the global economy, more than ever it is vital to set up resilient alliances between strong companies,” said Diess. Hackett noted the partnership was a great opportunity to innovate, “even as companies need to be selective about how they use their cash.” As for carbon, Ford says its use of Volkswagen’s electric drive system will help it fulfill its commitment to the Paris 2015 agreement, and Volkswagen and Ford reportedly plan to “explore additional ways to cooperate on electric vehicles.” Ford plans to design and engineer the vehicle in Germany, specifically Cologne-Merkenich. Independently, Volkswagen plans on officially releasing its own electric 1D.3 vehicle next week for about $45,484 in U.S. dollars as it prepares for a substantial push into electric vehicles. Eviation Alice Development Takes Step GKN Aerospace and Eviation have signed a deal to collaborate on the wings, empennage and electrical wiring systems of the Eviation Alice, a regional electric airplane. GKN Aerospace, which operates facilities in the Puget Sound region, said its agreement with Eviation covers the design and manufacture of Alice wings, its tail assembly and the Alice’s electrical wiring interconnection systems (EWIS). “The development of all-electric aircraft is ground-breaking. It’s a step change in aviation and we are delighted to contribute ... expertise to the project,” GKN Aerospace President, Civil Airframes, John Pritchard said. The deal is also notable in the Puget Sound region because the Eviation Alice is powered by Magnix, an electric airplane motor maker based in Redmond. The first Eviation Alice prototype was introduced to the world at the 2019 Paris Air Show. Eviation is part of the Clermont Group, a conglomerate owned by billionaire Richard Chandler, and the Israelbased startup is aiming to make flights up to 650 miles more environmentally

sustainable and cheaper. Eviation and Magnix are both part of Clermont Group. In a letter obtained by the Business Journal last year, Chandler explained his passion for electric aviation. Eviation’s deal with GKN Aerospace comes just a week before Magnix conducts its first flight tests of new motors, which are installed on an Cessna Caravan, at the Moses Lake flight test and engineering facilities of Seattle-based AeroTec. MagniX CEO Roei Ganzarski stands next to an airplane propellor mounted electric motor that his company is innovating as seen in a R&D lab at his growing company’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington. The all-electric nine-passenger Cessna has been renamed “eCaravan.” It will powered by a 750-horsepower (560 kW) magni500 propulsion system, which Magnix says will make it the world’s largest all-electric aircraft after its first inaugural flight. Magnix has already loaded one of its electric motors onto a modified Harbour Air seaplane for test flights in Canada last December as aviation enthusiasts lined the docks in Vancouver to watch. Returning to Work? Within the next three months, the majority (78%) of non-essential businesses say they are ready to return to their physical locations, while 34% plan to return within one month. Other employers are moving more slowly. Only 18% plan to bring employees back immediately after stay-at-home orders expire.Another 33% will wait a few weeks and 42% plan to take a “wait and see” approach to gauge the outcome of other businesses’ reopening efforts. These are the findings of a study, COVID-19 Return to Work Survey Report, released by Littler, an employment law practice. “While many businesses and their employees are eager to return to a sense of normalcy and resume in-office operations, they face a host of unknowns when it comes to what the workplace looks like in a COVID-19 era,” said Alka Ramchandani-Raj, a leader of Littler’s COVID-19 Task Force. “Particularly given the wide-ranging, and often conflicting, guidelines from state and local officials, employers are left to balance multiple logistical, emotional and legal concerns in determining whether, when and how to reopen their workplaces.” Employer Liability Concerns As the debate over granting employers “liability shields” to protect A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Reshoring Manufacturing Is Key For Economy And National Security, Experts Say Encouraging corporations to bring manufacturing out of China and back to the United States could be a key component to reviving the coronavirusstricken economy, economists tell the Herald, as they laid out their visions for the recovery. The return of manufacturing to the U.S. would be an economic boon and also a vital national security interest to help combat future pandemics and public health crises, economists said. “Out of this b l a c k sw a n event, I do think the good news is it will really b r ing more manufacturing back to America and get people back to work,” said Professor Nada Sanders of Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business. Low-interest loans and tax incentives from the federal government would encourage companies to bring jobs back to the U.S. from China, Sanders said. China is now under growing international pressure, suspected of failing to act swiftly or truthfully to stop the virus that emerged inWuhan late last year. Beyond the federal government helping revive businesses, companies on their own will have to rethink their supply chains because of the protracted nature of this pandemic, she said. The global supply chain will look much different, she said. “This has exposed the vulnerabilities of concentrating supplies in one region,” Sanders said. “Businesses will not be exclusively relying on their eggs in one basket, and instead diversify and begin to do manufacturing back here in the U.S.” President Trump’s trade adviser Peter Navarro has stressed reshoring — bringing manufacturing jobs that had been off-shored back to the U.S. — in the medical industry, noted Scott Harold of the RAND Corp. “There will be a big impetus for the U.S. to pursue a decoupling from China, be less reliant on China, and bring back jobs here especially in the medical industry,” he said.

Before the pandemic derailed the economy, Trump was credited with spurring an era of growth with regulatory rollback and other pro-business measures. Adding national security and American jobs to the equation amidst a global pandemic, Trump said Sunday, “We’ve learned a lot about supply chains. We’ve learned that it’s nice to make things in the U.S. I’ve been saying that for a long time.

“One of the reasons I ran for office was because we started making things everywhere but here,” the president said. “If one thing comes out of this, more than anything else, is that we should make product in the United States.”

More politicians will call for certain products, notably medical supplies, to be made in the U.S. because supply chains have been unreliable, said Gary Hufbauer of the Washington, D.C.-based Peterson Institute for International Economics. The limitation, however, is the labor supply in the U.S., he said. People who are now unemployed would have to go through extensive training programs for the highly skilled manufacturing work, he said.

“Maybe the government can incentivize firms to do more on-the-job training,” Hufbauer said. The federal government can also incentivize businesses to reshore manufacturing jobs by creating tax breaks that are tied to investment in the U.S., said American Enterprise Institute’s Derek Scissors. U. S . R e p. Lori Trahan is pushing the Pandemic Production Act, which w o u l d require the federal government to buy U.S.made personal protective equipment and essential medical equipment. “I think we would do ourselves a huge favor by directly investing in manufacturing to expand the production of PPE and medical technology, and at the same time investing in manufacturing jobs,” the Lowell Democrat said. “So this is an opportunity for us to make sure we’re prepared for future pandemics, and it would be an unbelievable source of jobs to bring back to the U.S. to help stimulate the economy.” SOURCE: Boston Herald; By: Rick Sobey A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Manufacturers to Spend $19.8 Billion on Data Analytics by 2026

analytics in their roles, the report states

Data management and data analytics continue to become an essential part of how manufacturers conduct business. In fact, this market will reach $19.8 billion in sales by 2026, according to ABI Research.

“While manufacturers have spent decades refining their physical production lines, today they need to expend effort in optimizing their processes for collecting and analyzing data,” Larner concludes. But data should not be collected just for the sake of it. SOURCE: IW Staff

“For many manufacturers, there is an appreciation that operational decisions need to be based on empirical evidence rather than guesswork,” explains Michael Larner, Principal Analyst at ABI Research.

Keeping Robots in Perspective

“The challenges are not necessarily capturing and analyzing data, rather what to analyze in the first place,” added Larner. “The findings need to have a meaningful impact on operations and so manufacturers need to take a step back and devise precise objectives.” The report recommends that manufacturers” engage suppliers to help them prioritize activities and shape projects.” The report cites examples of using data analytics to increase production, improve quality, or reduce waste. Analyzing data has become more sophisticated with newer technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The report points out that suppliers’ are now able to not just report data but also predict outcomes and make recommended actions. Other developments in the arena, such as the advent of no-code/low code platforms allow staff not to have to be data scientists to utilize A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Even in an environment where remote work is normalizing and investments in robotics are paying rewards, robots are still not taking over the production environment. In many of the best use cases robots remain complementary – to humans as well as other technologies. The human element is critical to making AI and robots work, explains Daniel Theobald, CEO of Vecna Robotics. “As counterintuitive as it sounds, human workers are essential to all manufacturing processes that include autonomous systems. In a facility that employs AI, robots and workers, each plays a unique role,” he says. AI is constantly scanning, looking for and learning from opportunities to create greater operational efficiencies, and communicating with workers through wearables and robots to deploy them to solve problems in realtime. Robots are used for automating routine, repetitive, dangerous jobs, such as lineside replenishment, racking, and staging. Supported by AI and automation, humans can then turn their attention to higher-value

Daniel Theobald, CEO of Vecna Robots Ongoing evolution Early adopters of automation have validated the functionality of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). According to Theobald, the next clear step is pushing interoperability forward. “This is interoperability between AMRs and warehouse management systems, enterprise resource planning systems and manufacturing execution systems; AMRs and humans; and, most importantly, between AMRS of different makes and models,” he says. “There is no one-size-fits-all robot. The typical industrial facility will require many types of robots to handle many types of applications. To effectively orchestrate tasks, interoperability amongst platforms is imperative.” However,Theobald explains, sometimes the hardest part is getting started. “Manufacturers can get over the hump by starting small and then scaling

their use of AI and automation,” he says. The first route is to begin collecting information using real-time location services (RTLS) to gather data across all robots, workers, assets, pallets and manual equipment. “Our customers can collect data, including resource usage, distance traveled, travel time vs. idle time, deadheading, and high-traffic routes through a facility,” he says. “This data is a lowcost way to identify areas for improvement and can be used as a way to simulate and assess multiple scenarios to determine optimal resource utilization and automation mix. Understanding what’s really going on in your operation is the key to unlocking significant value.” Future vision: Take ultrasound, more commonly associated with imaging fetuses in utero. COVID-fighting physicians have turned to ultrasound, though, to get a quick look at the lungs of infected patients and assess the extent of infection with the help of AI, whose algorithms can detect subtle patterns in the grayscale images. AI is helping on the level of the individual patient, but can also be a good systems manager: Some 64 Oregon hospitals — representing about 90% of the state’s beds — have begun coordinating with the Oregon Capacity System, based on GE Healthcare’s Critical Resource Tile, which uses AI to help maximize life-saving resources such as intensive care units and ventilators. “It’s easy for clinicians to instantly see where the hot spots and excess capacity are across the whole network,” said Jeff Terry, chief executive of GE Healthcare’s clinical command centers. Partnerships Forged in Crisis The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the fastest contraction on record for factory activity, while the country’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell to a record low as well. Global supply chains for medical devices, already strained from Hurricane Maria in 2017, have been further disrupted. American industry has been conscripted to build personal protective equipment (PPE), coronavirus test kits, life-saving ventilators and other critical medical devices. Ford, GM, Tesla and other large-scale manufacturers across the spectrum have stepped up and contributed to the national effort. It’s true that the FDA has lowered the regulatory bar during this emergency. The pandemic has required it to become more agile and evaluate risk differently—giving emergency use authorizations to products so they can be brought to market in days, not months. This has been one of the most notable things we’ve witnessed throughout the pandemic: As numerous companies and individuals have stepped up to help with the medical supply shortage, the FDA has been a partner in arming our healthcare professionals with the supplies they need to fight COVID-19. But products still have to undergo rigorous compliance testing before they are shipped to the front lines. It’s a public safety issue. As large-scale manufacturers in other markets step up to build much needed medical devices, they need to keep these regulatory issues in mind—even as they are under pressure to design, build and ship products as quickly as possible. To do that, they are partnering. Tesla may not have the specific expertise A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

to navigate the medical device regulatory landscape, but Medtronic certainly does. These two companies have pooled their resources and expertise to build much-needed ventilators.Tesla is providing the additional manufacturing capacity, while Medtronic brings decades of medical device expertise to the table.A third partner acts as a supplier and provides backup capacity when needed. Experienced medical device manufacturers can provide product design, material selection and material tracking as they relate to FDA compliance. These companies can provide risk mitigation expertise to make sure the device does what is intended and key parts don’t wear down or impact functionality—such as a rough edge puncturing a plasma bag. They can also help choose materials that have already passed medical approval to make sure parts or devices don’t cause allergies and can be sterilized properly. Traceability—where the material came from, who mined or made it and on what day—can also be managed by experienced medical device manufacturers for auditing purposes. As the third member of the partnership, suppliers are needed for prototyping, testing and backup manufacturing capacity. These companies can provide advice about how a design affects the manufacturing process. For example, perhaps a design is too complicated or costly to scale appropriately. An assembler would have the knowledge to make that call. Suppliers can also provide expertise on materials and manufacturing processes such as whether 3D printing or injection molding would be appropriate. Supply chains have been disrupted before, and there’s no reason to believe further disruptions aren’t ahead. As the medical industry learned from

Hurricane Maria, secondary manufacturing locations are imperative throughout the production lifecycle to mitigate risk for products. Many medical device companies, for instance, made this secondary support a priority for future product development by identifying secondary manufacturing sources for line-down emergencies, or even when they were in need of a bridge-tooling resource. It is critical we continue to build and reinforce our supply chains with the learnings and partnership from these last few months, as industry ramps up in the aftermath of COVID-19. We’re in an unprecedented chapter in our nation’s history, and manufacturers off all sizes are stepping up to help fill a need for critical medical supplies and devices. In order to meet regulatory standards, partnerships between manufacturers, experienced medical device manufacturers and suppliers should be formed—each providing a vital service and function vital to building medical supplies at the scale needed to defeat COVID-19. Disruption is inevitable, but will we learn and adapt during the journey? Chris Stevens is a senior research and development engineer at Protolabs.

Redmond Company Powers Cessna Caravan In Electric Aviation Milestone An electric motor made by Redmond-based Magnix powered itself into the electric aviation history booksThursday as the company’s all-electric Cessna Caravan took off into the skies above Moses Lake in another world first. The Magnix 750-horsepower all-electric propulsion system, called the magni500, powered a specially-modified Cessna 208B Grand Caravan test airplane during a 30-minute first flight that appeared to go off without problems.

Magnix CEO Roei Ganzarski narrated the first flight during a live webcast that saw the electric airplane climb to 2,500 feet above Grant County International Airport at Moses Lake in central Washington, make several turns before returning to the airport for a safe final approach and landing. Ganzarski remarked on how quiet the electric-powered airplane during its take off and test flight compared to the smaller, gas-powered chase plane that was also monitoring and recording the event. “The small Cessna (chase plane) is now making double the noise that the Caravan is,” Ganzarski said. After the flight ended, Ganzarski and Lee Human, the CEO of Seattle-based AeroTec, which provides consulting engineering and airplane certification services, celebrated with a high fives. The two CEOs contend that the flight was the largest ever completed electric airplane flight. Human’s team is working with Magnix on the eCaravan program at its facilities at Moses lake. The difference in noise emitted by the two aircraft were especially noticeable as the eCaravan approached for its landing. Last December, a smaller Magnix electric motor powered a Harbour Air passenger seaplane in Vancouver on its own inaugural flight, piloted by the CEO of Harbour Air himself. The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Attitudes That Matter

Positivity is the predominant attitude as Flatline continues to develop these humanitarian products. They are paring margins as low as possible to enable your restart to be as painless as possible. A brochure with photos, renderings and pricing is in process at the time of this writing and will be available as this publication reaches your desk.

By Stephen Hannemann

Several months ago I began a series of articles on continuous improvement. This series is not about process improvement, but about attitude and how uplifting attitudes will positively affect every aspect of a manufacturing operation. A positive attitude in any organization is best when mentored from ownership or leadership, and can be equally powerful when it trickles up from the workforce. Given the situation in our country in Q1 and Q2, first with COVID-19 and now the civil unrest that has befallen our country, a positive and encouraging attitude is a precious commodity. An optimistic attitude in your workforce these days can make the difference of whether your company will survive or not. Last week I returned to the road and visited one of my principals, Flatline Fab in Portland, OR. A palpable atmosphere of positive enthusiasm enveloped me from the moment I entered the reception area. Flatline is one of the fortunate manufacturing companies having been allowed to remain open during the quarantine. Recognizing how other companies are less fortunate, the owners Free Standing and their managers took on a posture of Sanitatizing Station gratitude. To that end, Flatline, a nimble company, reconfigured their manufacturing floor to accommodate the production of a suite of safety products to aid businesses of all sizes and genres to open safely as sheltering abates. Here is an abbreviated list of their offering: • Sneeze Guards – 24”x24.5”or 48”x24” • Sanitizing Station – wall mounted • Sanitizing Station – counter top or with stand • Touch Free Sanitizing Station – free standing • Touch Free Sanitizing Station – wall mounted • Foot Door Opener • Hands Free Door Opener A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •
