Disruptive new businesses
We hear about them every day, a new ‘. com’ you’ve never imagined before or a similar one or ten you can’t imagine are new! But, someone thought it up. Just when you didn’t think there could be more online realty companies, or another coffee roaster, or even a new car company, there they are and here they come to upset the norm and push the envelope to better, faster, better, earth friendly.

When Published by: $50.00 components turned into $10.00 parts the immediate picture was unbelievable, and I didn’t A2Z Manufacturing West Coast believe it, for a very good reason. I was having components made in NM, US at a very competitive rate. Corporate wanted more savings. The ‘edict’ was to buy from China and India and it ended up PUBLISHERS/EDITORS in a supply chain nightmare. Kim Carpenter & Linda Daly Kim@A2ZManufacturing.com Parts were eventually received, very late, not to print, and with some FOD we never could expect. After achieving a great low cost price variance we experienced communication problems, this was Mail Address: 1538 E. LaVieve Ln. accompanied with inferior components we could not use and sometimes we could not rework to make them right or usable. We scrambled to get some interim parts made domestically to meet Tempe AZ 85284 our manufacturing time line. This was a disruption of another sort; it was cheap parts, made with Telephone: (480) 773-3239 cheap labor, not fast and hard to realize a total cost savings. Website: www.A2ZManufacturing.com E-mail:Kim@A2ZManufacturing.com In the pandemic we could not find products made in the USA that we all outsourced to other low cost nations. This put our nation in a bind that would help us to think very differently. We all realized CONTRIBUTORS that things that seemed so simply outsourced were vital to our national security and that other Linda Daly, Eugene Wirth, Stephen Hannemann, nations could, so to speak, held us hostage… Hugh Taylor
Disruption happens in many more ways than new technology companies coming up with new or improved ideas and ways of doing things. We see disruption in supply chains, and we are all seeing what we have done over the past 30 years to outsource our products overseas.
We rushed to make them again for ourselves; from masks, to chips. We were lacking, because we let our country down by outsourcing these key items to be made outside the US. So, we rushed to make it domestically, at a higher cost, on time, and with a quality that is not met in most of the procurement arenas.
Published bi-monthly to keep precision manufacturers abreast of news, contracts, trends, and to supply a viable supplier source for the industry.
We must accept disruption; it’s inevitable, but not in regard to supply chain. The key component to supply chain is to get it right and on time. Positive price variance is achieved by working with suppliers to help engineer components in a manufacturability realm that cuts cost through a practical cost savings methodology, this means working with material suppliers and giving our suppliers a reduced cost road map, based on yearly consumption and parts that are easier and more practical to manufacture. When suppliers are afforded key tools to quote/manufacture parts, pricing is reduced, quality is maintained, and delivery is a constant, because it is all planned.

Hurco North America Announces New Apprenticeship Program Hurco North America announced the launch of a new apprenticeship program. The Field Service Apprenticeship (FSA) is a 2-year program that starts with a 12-week industry training that merges hands-on training and repair of CNC machines with classroom materials. Cory Miller, General Manager of Hurco North America, said, “We are fortunate to have a tenured service and support team at Hurco. The knowledge they have amassed is extremely valuable and the FSA program will allow them to transfer that knowledge to the next generation of service engineers with intensive training about the machine tool industry, how they are built, the technology that powers our CNC machines, how to diagnose issues, and service machines.” While candidates with a degree or working toward one are encouraged to apply, candidates who are mechanically inclined with no industry or engineering experience are also encouraged to apply for the FSA. “We know there are people outside our industry who would excel at a career as a service engineer for machine tools, but might not have been exposed to our industry. We believe the FSA will be important to bridge the skills gap and introduce more people to the machine tool industry, which benefits the industry as a whole,” said Miller.
NTK Cutting Tools is pleased to announce that beginning on May 1st, M.C. Sales will expand their NTK representative responsibilities to California and Nevada.
“If you have a strong work ethic, like to learn how things work, like hands-on training, and want a career instead of a job, this apprenticeship is for you,” said Mark Gilmore, Service Manager for Hurco North America.

COCO Los Angeles startup Coco recently launched its robotics-based delivery service in Austin, Texas. By Elise Franco - Staff Reporter, L.A. Inno Los Angeles startup Coco has unleashed its remote-piloted delivery services on the streets of Austin, Texas.
Zach Rash and Brad Squicciarini founded Coco in 2020, putting their robotics backgrounds to work to develop a faster and more cost-effective method of short-distance delivery. The vehicle will deliver inside of a two-mile radius and is outfitted with a GPS, camera and storage space to keep food safe and temperature controlled. “Right now, we have these gas cars circling neighborhoods all day, every day,” Rash said. “People clearly want groceries and meals delivered quickly, but doing it with these contractors and car-based methods didn’t seem like the future we wanted to be building.” Here’s how it works: A customer places an order; Coco drives to the restaurant; the merchant loads the order onto Coco; in 15 minutes or less, Coco delivers the order. “At the end of the day, the core of our service is delivering something from point A to point B,” Rash said. “The way the food travels and is delivered is critical for the merchants’ businesses.” Coco services more than 50 merchants across Los Angeles. Last month, the startup announced its expansion into Austin with 10 merchants already on board, including Arpeggio Grill, Bamboo Bistro, Clay Pit, DeSano Pizzeria,Tuk Tuk Thai and Aviator Pizza.

“Boeing Closing In On Deal With Delta For Up To 100 Max Jets
Production and Custom Fabrication WE MAKE MAGIC! Reports that The Boeing Co. is nearing a deal with Delta Air Lines for as many as 100 of its 737 Max 10 planes signal the jet maker may be gaining traction with one of its most “conspicuously lacking” customers for the Max. The two could announce the order as soon as next month, Reuters reported, giving Delta access to Boeing’s highest-capacity model of the single-aisle jet. That would be the first of the Max family for the airline, which currently flies earlier models of the 737, along with models of the 757, smaller 717 and widebody 767. The deal could also indicate a thawing in the relationship between Delta (NYSE: DAL) and Boeing (NYSE: BA) after the latter lodged a trade complaint in 2017 that disrupted a large order of planes Delta had placed with Canadian manufacturer Bombardier, said Richard Aboulafia, managing director with AeroDynamic Advisory.

Boeing declined to comment on the report, and Delta Air Lines did not return a request for comment. Though prices are typically steeply discounted on large orders, the Max 10 is the largest and costliest of the Max family, and the deal would be worth some $13.5 billion at sticker value. Final assembly on the 737 family of jets takes place in Renton,Washington, supporting a large segment of the company’s nearly 57,000 Washington employees. Boeing has a presence in the Portland area with its Gresham production facility. A willingness to mix manufacturers is “increasingly a feature of the landscape” for airlines, Aboulafia said, but nothing new for Delta, which
flies a mix of Boeing and Airbus jets, as well as some smaller Bombardier and Embraer aircraft. “Delta has always been a fan of extremely heterogeneous fleets,” he said, with experience managing the variations in flight operations that requires. While the deal doesn’t move the needle significantly in Boeing’s effort to close the gap on European rival Airbus’ wide sales lead on the Max family with its A321neo planes, it demonstrates increasing demand from airlines to revamp their fleets with new, more fuel-efficient single-aisle jets. Rocket Lab to Attempt First Mid-Air Helicopter Capture of the Electron Rocket During Next Mission
step in the Company’s development program to make Electron a reusable rocket. Rocket Lab will be attempting the catch with a customized Sikorsky S-92, a large twin engine helicopter typically used in offshore oil & gas transport and search and rescue operations.
For the first time, Rocket Lab will attempt a mid-air helicopter capture of an Electron rocket as it returns to Earth from space, furthering the company’s program to make Electron the first reusable orbital small launch vehicle
Catching a returning rocket stage mid-air as it returns from space is a highly complex operation that demands extreme precision. Several critical milestones must align perfectly to ensure a successful capture.
LONG BEACH, California. Rocket Lab USA, Inc (Nasdaq: RKLB) (“Rocket Lab”), a leading launch and space systems company, has announced today that during its next Electron launch, a commercial rideshare mission currently scheduled in April 2022, the company will attempt a mid-air helicopter capture of the Electron launch vehicle for the first time. The “There and Back Again” mission, Rocket Lab’s 26th Electron launch, will lift off from Pad A at Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand’s Mhia Peninsula within a 14-day launch window scheduled to commence on April 19, 2022 UTC. Electron will deploy 34 payloads from commercial operators Alba Orbital, Astrix Astronautics, Aurora Propulsion Technologies, E-Space, Unseenlabs, and Swarm Technologies via global launch services provider Spaceflight Inc. The launch is expected to bring the total number of satellites launched by Electron to 146. For the first time, Rocket Lab will also attempt a mid-air capture of Electron’s first stage as it returns from space after launch, the next major A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Recovery Mission Profile: Approximately an hour prior to lift-off, Rocket Lab’s Sikorsky S-92 will move into position in the capture zone, approximately 150 nautical miles off New Zealand’s coast, to await launch. At T+2:30 minutes after lift-off, Electron’s first and second stages will separate per a standard mission profile. Electron’s second stage will continue on to orbit for payload deployment and Electron’s first stage will begin its descent back to Earth reaching speeds of almost 8,300 km (5,150 miles) per hour. The stage will reach temperatures of around 2,400 degrees C (4,352 F) during its descent. After deploying a drogue parachute at 13 km (8.3 miles) altitude, the main parachute will be extracted at around 6 km (3.7 miles) altitude to dramatically slow the stage to 10 metres per second, or 36 km (22.3 miles) per hour. As the stage enters the capture zone, Rocket Lab’s helicopter will attempt to rendezvous with the returning stage and capture the parachute line via a hook.
Once the stage is captured and secured, the helicopter will transport it back to land where Rocket Lab will conduct a thorough analysis of the stage and assess its suitability for reflight. “We’re excited to enter this next phase of the Electron recovery program,” said Rocket Lab founder and CEO, Peter Beck. “We’ve conducted many successful helicopter captures with replica stages, carried out extensive parachute tests, and successfully recovered Electron’s first stage from the ocean during our 16th, 20th, and 22nd missions. Now it’s time to put it all together for the first time and pluck Electron from the skies. Trying to catch a rocket as it falls back to Earth is no easy feat, we’re absolutely threading the needle here, but pushing the limits with such complex operations is in our DNA.We expect to learn a tremendous amount from the mission as we work toward the ultimate goal of making Electron the first reusable orbital small sat launcher and providing our customers with even more launch availability.” Rocket Lab has previously conducted three successful ocean recovery missions where Electron returned to Earth under parachute and was recovered from the ocean. Analysis of those missions informed design modifications to Electron, enabling it to withstand the hard re-entry environment, and also helped to developed procedures for an eventual helicopter capture. Payloads aboard the “There and Back Again” mission include: Alba Orbital: A cluster of four pico-satellites will be deployed, including Alba Orbital’s own Unicorn-2 PocketQube satellites, as well as TRSI-2, TRSI-3, and MyRadar-1 satellites for Alba Orbital’s customers. Each small satellite carries a unique sensor designed to demonstrate innovative technologies on orbit. Unicorn-2 will be carrying an optical night-time imaging payload designed to monitor light pollution across the globe. Astrix Astronautics: Astrix Astronautics is deploying the “Copia” system - a high-performance power generation system for CubeSats that aims to improve on power restraints typically seen in small satellites. The mission aims to demonstrate the high performance of Copia’s novel design via -on-orbit testing with 1U solar arrays able to capture up to 200W. Aurora Propulsion Technologies: The AuroraSat-1 also known as The Flying Object will deploy to low Earth orbit in a demonstration of the company’s proprietary propulsion devices and plasma brakes that provide efficient propulsion and deorbiting capabilities for small satellites. The CubeSat will validate the water-based propellant and mobility control of its Resistojets that can assist CubeSats with detumbling capabilities and propulsion-based attitude control.AuroraSat-1 will also test its deployable Plasma Brakes which combine a micro-tether with charged particles in space, or ionospheric plasma, to generate significant amounts of drag to deorbit the spacecraft safely at the end of its life. E-Space: E-Space’s payload will consist of three demonstration satellites to validate the systems and technology for its sustainable satellite system. The satellites have small cross-sections, to decrease the risk of collision from the millions of untrackable space objects and will automatically deorbit if any systems malfunction. Eventually, the satellites will sacrificially capture and deorbit small debris to burn up on re-entry, setting a new standard in space environmental management.

Virgin Orbit Aims To Bring Rocket Launches To Poland Virg in Orbit has agreed to work with the government of Poland with the goal of bringing rocket launching capability to the country using the company’s LauncherOne system. In a letter of intent signed between the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), the agency overseeing Poland’s space development, and Virgin Orbit (Nasdaq:VORB), the two parties will collaborate on a detailed analysis of LauncherOne’s practical applications in support of Poland’s science and economy industries. Polish Minister of Economic Development and Technology Piotr Nowak said the agreement is a step toward the country’s aim to build its own satellite system, which it deems crucial in the current A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

geopolitical situation. “Development of new technologies, including navigation, Earth imaging or telecommunications are irreplaceable in ensuring national security and solving crisis situations,” Nowak said in a statement. Virgin Orbit said its completion of three commercial launches in the Western United States demonstrates the company’s ability to enable space launches for regions where spaceflight would otherwise be limited or impractical — made possible through a dedicated carrier aircraft and ground support systems. “Today’s agreement marks an important step to providing assured access to space for Poland and surrounding nations — serving Polish industry, science and security,” said Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart. “Poland’s forward thinking is inspiring at this critical juncture for Europe and we’re honored to serve them and partner with the Polish space community to open space for good.” GrzegorzWrochna, president of the Polish Space Agency, said the letter of intent came after several months of intense negotiations, conducted in coordination with the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology. “The demonstrated interest and concrete declarations indicate that
Poland is an attractive partner for global players, such as Virgin Orbit,” Wrochna said. “Even more importantly, this agreement further positions our domestic space sector in the competitive upstream segment of the international space market. Thanks to the LauncherOne technology, Poland will be able to provide launch services also to other countries in the area, in particular within the Three Seas region.” The agreement comes as Virgin Orbit launches an aggressive expansion outside of the United States. The company previously announced plans to open the first launch capabilities for international space ports in Oita, Japan, and Alcântara, Brazil, and will be launching its first orbital flight via its LauncherOne platform from the United Kingdom later in 2022. Founded by Richard Branson in 2017, Virgin Orbit began commercial service in 2021 and makes its LauncherOne rockets in Long Beach, California. “The March Manufacturing PMI® registered 57.1 percent, a decrease of 1.5 percentage points from the February reading of 58.6 percent. This figure indicates expansion in the overall economy for the 22nd month in a row after a contraction in April and May 2020.This is the lowest reading since September 2020 (55.4 percent). The New Orders Index registered 53.8 percent, down 7.9 percentage points compared to the February reading of 61.7 percent. The Production Index reading of 54.5 percent is a 4-percentage point decrease compared to February’s figure of 58.5 percent. The Prices Index registered 87.1 percent, up 11.5 percentage points compared to the February figure of 75.6 percent. The Backlog of Orders Index registered 60 percent, 5 percentage points lower than the February reading of 65 percent. The Employment Index figure of 56.3 percent is 3.4 percentage points higher than the 52.9 percent recorded in February. The Supplier Deliveries Index registered 65.4 percent, a decrease of 0.7 percentage point compared to the February figure of 66.1 percent. The Inventories Index registered 55.5 percent, 1.9 percentage points higher than the February reading of 53.6 percent. The New Export Orders Index reading of 53.2 percent is down 3.9 percentage points compared to February’s figure of 57.1 percent. The Imports Index registered 51.8 percent, a 3.6-percentage point decrease from the February reading of 55.4 percent.” Fiore continues, “The U.S. manufacturing sector remains in a demanddriven, supply chain-constrained environment. In March, progress was made to solve the labor shortage problems at all tiers of the supply chain, which will result in improved factory throughput and supplier deliveries. Panelists reported lower rates of quits and early retirements compared to previous months, as well as improving internal and supplier labor positions. March brought back increasing rates of price expansion, due primarily to instability in global energy markets. Suppliers are not waiting to experience the full impacts of price increases before negotiating with their customers. Panel sentiment remained strongly optimistic regarding demand, with six positive growth comments for every cautious comment, down from February’s ratio of 12-to-1. Demand expanded, with the (1) New Orders Index remaining in growth territory, supported by weaker growth of new export orders, (2) Customers’ Inventories Index remaining at a very low level and (3) Backlog of Orders Index continuing in strong growth territory. Consumption (measured by the Production and Employment
indexes) grew during the period, though at a slower rate, with a combined minus-0.6-percentage point change to the Manufacturing PMI® calculation. The Employment Index expanded for a seventh straight month; panelists indicate their ability to hire continues to improve, to a greater degree than in February. Challenges with turnover (quits and retirements) and resulting backfilling continue to plague panelists’ efforts to adequately staff their organizations, but to a lesser extent compared to February. Amid signs of staffing and supplier delivery improvements, production expanded at disappointing levels, likely due to timing issues. Inputs — expressed as supplier deliveries, inventories, and imports — continued to constrain production expansion. The Supplier Deliveries Index again slowed, but at a slightly slower rate in March, while the Inventories Index increased at a slightly faster rate and the Imports Index grew at a slower rate. The Prices Index increased for the 22nd consecutive month, at a dramatically higher rate compared to February. “Five of the six biggest manufacturing industries — Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Machinery; Transportation Equipment; Chemical Products; and Computer & Electronic Products — registered moderateto-strong growth in March. “Manufacturing performed well for the 22nd straight month, with demand registering slower month-over-month growth (likely due to extended lead times) and consumption softening slightly (due to labor force improvement). Omicron impacts are being felt by overseas partners, and the impact to the manufacturing community is a potential headwind,” says Fiore. Fifteen manufacturing industries reported growth in March, in the following order: Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Furniture & Related Products; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Machinery; Textile Mills; Transportation Equipment; Fabricated Metal Products; Paper Products; Chemical Products; Computer & Electronic Products; Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Primary Metals; and Plastics & Rubber Products. The two industries reporting a decrease in March compared to February are: Wood Products; and Petroleum & Coal Products. WHAT RESPONDENTS ARE SAYING “No letup yet in supply chain challenges, especially electronic components. Relying more and more on the broker market.” [Computer & Electronic Products] “Customer orders are brisk in the face of significant price increases, while we continue to struggle with inbound supplier service and raw material availability issues.” [Chemical Products] “Generally speaking, the business environment is slowly improving for aerospace component manufacturers. Supply chain disruptions and stillextending lead times continue to keep purchasing busy. This further causes reevaluation of the current year’s business plan and cost assumptions.” [Transportation Equipment] “Overall business conditions are challenging in both domestic and international transportation. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has created uncertainty in the grain markets, causing upward pricing pressure. In addition, inflationary pressures across all categories have made it challenging to manage cost and profitability.” [Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products] “Prices are increasing on steel and steel products after a slight decrease from

Manufacturing PMI® Manufacturing grew in March, as the Manufacturing PMI® registered
57.1 percent, 1.5 percentage points lower than the February reading of 58.6 percent. This is the lowest reading since September 2020, when the composite index registered 55.4 percent. “The Manufacturing PMI® continued to indicate strong sector expansion and U.S. economic growth in March. All five subindexes that directly factor into the Manufacturing PMI® were in growth territory. Five of the six biggest manufacturing industries — Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Machinery;Transportation Equipment; Chemical Products; and Computer & Electronic Products — registered moderate-to-strong growth in March. The New Orders and Production indexes remained in expansion territory. The Supplier Deliveries Index softened slightly, and the Inventories Index increased, indicating easing of supply chain congestion. All 10 of the subindexes were positive for the period; a reading of ‘too low’ for the Customers’ Inventories Index is considered a positive for future production,” says Fiore. A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing economy is generally expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting. A Manufactur ing PMI® above 48.7 percent, over a period of time, generally indicates an expansion of the overall economy. Therefore, the March Manufacturing PMI® indicates the overall economy grew in March for the 22nd consecutive month following contraction in April and May 2020. “The past relationship between the Manufacturing PMI® and the overall economy indicates that the Manufacturing PMI® for March (57.1 percent) corresponds to a 2.9-percent increase in real gross domestic product (GDP) on an annualized basis,” says Fiore. New Orders ISM®’s New Orders Index registered 53.8 percent in March, a decrease of 7.9 percentage points compared to the 61.7 percent reported in February. This indicates that new orders grew for the 22nd consecutive month. While the New Orders Index remains in growth territory, the month-over-month decrease is the largest since a 15.3-percentage point drop in April 2020. “Five of the six largest manufacturing sectors increased new orders at moderateto-strong levels: Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Transportation Equipment; Chemical Products; Computer & Electronic Products; and Machinery. Price instability, softening lead times and panelists’ order books
being full resulted in a pause in new order rates. Backlog and customer inventories remain at very encouraging levels, indicating that demand remains strong in spite of this month’s slowing in new order expansion,” says Fiore. A New Orders Index above 52.9 percent, over time, is generally consistent with an increase in the Census Bureau’s series on manufacturing orders (in constant 2000 dollars). Of the 18 manufacturing industries, 13 reported growth in new orders in March, in the following order: Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Textile Mills; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Transportation Equipment; Paper Products; Chemical Products; Fabricated Metal Products; Furniture & Related Products; Computer & Electronic Products; Plastics & Rubber Products; and Machinery. The only industry reporting a decline in new orders in March is Petroleum & Coal Products. NORTH SOUTH IS GROWING AGAIN! Introducing the New Machining Division Walking into a North South Machinery facility just feels unlike any other Machine Tool distributor. Their passion for all things performance radiates thru the building. In one corner you can find an industry-leading high precision Machine Tool running customer demos, and in the other… a vintage Senna-liveried Formula1 race car. The next room down may have the latest in Automation Technology on display, just steps away from their track ready Porsche GT3RS Clubsport. It’s an ethos that’s been deeply engrained in the North South DNA by CEO Jim Swartzbaugh dating back some 37 years to the company’s inception in the garage of he and wife Madonna’s Southern California home. When asked about the unique mixture of ‘Tools & Toys’ in the showroom, Swartzbaugh immediately reflected back to his roots, “Speed, Performance, Precision… It’s been a theme almost my entire life. Whether it was working in my father’s machine shop as a young boy, riding dirt bikes with my brothers, racing cars with my son or running a Machine Tool distributorship… its that perfect marriage between man and machine that has always been magical to me.” North South now prepares to take another step in that marriage, as it has announced the expansion of their operations to include their newly formed ‘Machining Division’. “You know us for our EDM and Fabrication products and services”, says Jim, “And today we are introducing our new Machining Division, where we will offer our customers some of the industries best Milling and Turning products. The new Machining Division will be headed up by Machine Tool veteran Bob Nugent, who we are proud to announce will serve as group President.” While not new to world of machining, the formalization of this new division at North South is just the latest sign of growth for their team. The recent addition of a new Milling Tech Center in Placentia, CA, as well as two Phoenix area facilities in recent years brings their total footprint to six locations and approaching 60 employees nationwide. The addition of several dedicated Applications Specialists and experienced Service Technicians to the team leave little doubt that North South is serious about its dedication to supporting this new division and its customers, not just selling to them. Logan Harrington is a key team member who supports North South’s customers in the Machining Division. “I joined the North South Machinery team because I believe in their business model, which is ‘service first’. At North South, we have a diverse set of tools that we can support our customers with, and we offer machines that range from entry level to extremely high precision advanced machines. Our on-site operations training, our applications support, and our extensive inventory of machines are just some of the reasons I knew North South Machinery would be a place where I could be my very best in supporting customers.” 48

The new Machining Division will undoubtedly benefit from the support and experience of the veteran team of Sales, Admin, Service & Logistics personnel that have been the hallmark of North South for so many years. “Many make the mistake of thinking that we’re in the Manufacturing Business when we’re not… We’re in the People Business.” said Swartzbaugh, continuing, “Our success is a direct result of the many members of the North South family that have been with us 20, 25, 30+ years… that’s our real magic.”
Introducing North South Machinery’s Newest Line, Toyoda W i t h t h e announcement o f N o r t h S o u t h ’s expanded Machining Division, the news that a partnership with Toyoda JTEKT will be anchoring this expansion has brought elevated excitement to group. The Japanese-owned line of Machine Tools are well known in the manufacturing world for their durability and precision – from their Milling & Turning Centers to their Grinding Machines as well as their Flexible Automated Solutions. Bob Nugent, who was recently brought on to head up the North South Machining Division, says, “The team that has been assembled here, and the partnership with well known brand like Toyoda really has us all extremely excited about the potential here. Not to mention our continued growth with several other high end brands like Starrag & OPS Ingersoll, and the incredible automation solutions they bring to the party… we’ve got very high goals for what we feel we can bring to the market, and our loyal customers in particular.” Toyoda machines opened for business in 1941 with a grinding machine, specifically manufactured to support a major Japanese automotive company. Decades later, Toyoda expanded their lineup to horizontal machining centers, and later incorporated automation systems, vertical machining centers, turning lathes, and bridge and boring mills.
NORTH SOUTH’S FRESH FACES Bob Nugent — is the company’s newest member, though if you are in our precision machining
industry, likely you know Bob. As President of the newly formed Machine Tool Division, Bob will support North South’s customers in milling/turning solutions throughout the entire Western USA. Bob brings a wealth of experience in the machine tool industry, having held senior management and sales positions over the past 3 decades at machine tool builders and dealers. Bob earned his degree in business from the University of Southern California and is a CMTSE (Certified Machine Tool Sales Engineer). Bob is married with 2 children and he loves to work out. He loves anything outdoors, though he has not tried mountain biking, yet...

amongst the manufacturer ranks for the past several years. During his decade long career in the machining industry, Logan has had the opportunity to work with both German and Japanese builders at the factory and distributor level. As an ex-Service Technician, Logan recognizes just how critical service is to his customers. Immediately upon meeting him, you will see that Logan is a gregarious person. Years ago, his management team saw in Logan this talent, and sought to capitalize on his service / machine tool expertise and leverage it into a sales position. Today, Logan brings this sales experience all throughout the West Coast Region.

“If We Go Back Pre-Covid, Pre-Trump Tariffs Etc., We Would Be Paying Anything From $2,800 To $3,600 For A Container. … That Same Container, Just Cost Us $32,000,” Ranson Said. Given This, Ranson Said Vvolt Is Looking At Its Options For Bringing Some Of The Manufacturing To Oregon. It Doesn’t Make Sense For Them To Ship Finished Bikes Around The World, He Said. It Would Be More Efficient To Explore What Parts Of The Process Can Be Done Here In Oregon, Such As Final Assembly. This Could Help Keep Costs Down, Ranson Said, Give The Company More Command Over The Quality Of The Product, Help Them Better Gauge Customer Interest In Various Models And Create New Bikes Based On Those Interests. “Fast-Forward A Year From Now, 18 Months From Now, I’d Love To Say That We’ve Got Products Being Produced, If Nothing Else Final Assembly, Happening Here,” Ranson Said. By Malia Spencer - Portland Inno Siemens Mobility seeks to make train factory expansion permanent Siemens Mobility is seeking approval to make permanent an emergency expansion of its French Road train factory property in Sacramento County.
ISO/AS9100D CERTIFIED
Siemens in the spring of 2020 made an urgency request to the county to store trains on three residential parcels it owns adjacent to the factory grounds. The county approved it at the time.
We believe that we are stronger and more viable when we manufacture precision components for USA Manufacturing!
Now, the temporary emergency request is set to expire in May, and Siemens is seeking formal approval to change the zoning from residential to industrial, said Gregory Thatch, a Sacramento attorney representing Siemens in the land-use change.
www.flexproaz.com
Siemens bought the adjoining parcels in 2020, but it hadn’t completed the necessary permit work and environmental analysis to improve the land. If approved, Siemens will be able to pave the gravel area and add lighting. The parcels are already inside Siemens’ existing fenced campus, Thatch said.
Put our Machining Passion to work for you! Call Today: 480-773-3239
The street addresses for the parcels are 7356, 7372 and 7382 French Road, all of which are zoned for residential. They total 3.7 acres. If approved, the change won’t change the factory’s boundaries from the street, Thatch said. The factory has a setback of more than 20 feet from the road at the location of the three parcels. Siemens is the third-largest manufacturer in the Sacramento region, with 2,200 employees at its French Road factory. In addition to French Road, Siemens has a separate repair and renovation facility at McClellan Park, and Siemens in November sought approvals for tenant improvements on 243,7300 square feet of a building in Depot A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

The Manufacturer’s Secret Weapon Continuous Improvement By Stephen Hannemann
Quotations from inspired individuals stimulate me. They cause me to reflect, to discern if I am living only for myself or looking for ways to help and encourage others around me. Most of all they move me to personally improve continuously. Spending nearly 12 years living alone after a marriage of 23 years, the time I had to myself, I realized, was a sobering gift. Those years were a time of learning about myself, a time of reflection, and personal change. Five of those years, I spent writing a novel in an attempt to help people have better marriages. Death of a Warrior, disguised as a suspense novel, was written to help men understand the difference in the way men and women communicate and intake or process information. One penetrating quote came from that work that had a profound impact on me. “Knowledge must be tempered with experience for wisdom to be born.” Over time, I have learned the value of wisdom. In my opinion, it is a coveted gift, nearly as important as life itself. For how else do we learn to navigate the unexpected, to aid and help others around us to become better, or make their day a bit easier? I no longer live alone. My wife Yvonne and I are rapidly approaching our 17th wedding anniversary. We mingle in many and varied groups. We find groups invigorating and as I observe, I find Yvonne’s conversations are about a 65/35 split. She listens more than she talks. When she does talk, often, she asks penetrating questions. It’s a skill I admire. I tend to be about 50/50 at best. Back to wisdom again, you learn more when you listen than when you are talking. I am learning to get better. As I sit here banging away on my keyboard, I am reminded of our hunger for fellowship. We as a society are learning that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and such are not a substitute for physical interaction. If nothing else, these past two years have taught us that we are social creatures and need physical interactions to be healthy. You’re asking yourself by now what does this have to do with manufacturing? Well, everything! Flatline Fabrication Portland, OR A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

Employees with good attitudes and social skills, who have positive interactions with colleagues, are happier, helpful, supportive, and more productive in their work environments. Companies where the workforce not only feels, but knows without doubt, they are well supported by leadership and ownership, those companies thrive. The personnel in these companies make eye contact, and connect with one another, constantly building and reinforcing. When you are fortunate enough to visit these businesses, you feel it the minute you walk through the door.
