Annual Report Business Career Services, Iowa State Universit y

“Career Services is one of the College of Business’ greatest assets. The number of dedicated staff and their willingness to go the extra mile speak volumes about how far the college has come. I would highly recommend students to take advantage of our career coordinators, Career Fair, and ISU CMS program. These resources have helped me land two great internships!” - Megan Weiler, International Finance Intern, Ecolab, Inc.

Director’s summary

March 2006

Dear Supporter, It is an exciting time to be a business major from a career services perspective. Our graduates did very well in 2004-2005. Ninety percent (+4%) were professionally occupied in professional employment, graduate school, continuing education, or military service. This is the highest percentage in this category since 1999-2000. We are pleased to provide you with data regarding the recruiting and career development activities of 2004-2005. Overall, our staff advised 1,654 (+1%) students/alums and made 42 presentations. We reported 534 (+5.2%) students on internship sites. Our Fall and Spring Career Fairs were successful, attracting 147 and 120 employers respectively, with a cumulative total of 6,250 student attendees. The job market has been so strong that we have actually begun to see a decline in student attendance at our fairs (-19%). We provided 3,384 campus interviews and had an additional 1,141 job postings for internships and permanent positions that did not involve campus recruiting. Fifty-eight percent of students remained in the state of Iowa for their professional pursuits, while 42% went outside of the state. We had a very active year. There are several sections in this report that may be of interest. They include; 1) top employers hiring our students, 2) a state-by-state list of the relocation activities of our graduates, and 3) graduate schools attended. We include a breakdown of professional school attendance as well. We are very pleased with the development of the use of ISU CMS, our computerized on-campus interviewing and database management system. This collaborative effort among colleges has given us greater exposure to employers and students and gives us a more seamless appearance to those accessing ISU students for recruiting purposes. As well, we continue to teach BUS AD 301 (Professional Employment Preparation) and co-teach BUS AD 201 (Careers in Business) with Undergraduate Programs. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to reporting the successes of College of Business students and graduates in the future.

Undergraduate Business employment Statistics

Page title

Methodology The data presented was collected in the following manner: 1) Information taken from the Central University Records Graduation Questionnaire 2) Direct response from graduating students 3) Phone calls made directly to graduates or their family six months after their graduating semester.

Definition of Categories: EMPLOYED PROFESSIONALLY is defined as employment which requires a college degree. It does not always indicate employment in the graduated field of study. TEMPORARILY EMPLOYED; STILL SEEKING PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT indicates the graduates are working in a wide range of positions which do not require a college degree. This type of employment is often a carryover from work while in school. SEEKING EMPLOYMENT indicates the graduate is unemployed and actively seeking professional employment. NOT SEEKING EMPLOYMENT indicates the graduate is not entering the job market at this time. NO EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION indicates that despite our best efforts no contact was able to be made to ascertain this individual’s employment status. RETURN TO HOME COUNTRY indicates international students returning to their home country. The three previous categories (NOT SEEKING EMPLOYMENT, NO EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION and RETURN TO HOME COUNTRY) were not included in the statistical analysis so as to reflect a more realistic indicator of the employment status.
