March 2009
Dear Supporter, College of Business graduates did very well in 2007-2008. Ninety percent (-1%) were occupied in professional employment, teaching, graduate school/continuing education, or military service. This is slightly lower than 2006-2007, but very strong by most standards. We are pleased to provide you with data regarding the recruiting and career development activities of 2007-2008. Overall, our staff advised 1,686 (-9%) students/alums and made 124 (+88%) presentations. We reported 568 (-18%) students on internship sites. This decline in intern reporting is hard to gauge. It may be an indicator of the softening job market. Our Fall and Spring Career Fairs were successful, attracting 183 (-2%) and 163 (-6%) employers respectively, with a cumulative total of 4,685 (-23%) student attendees. The decline in student attendance at the fairs is a troubling trend. We provided 2,578 (+25%) campus interviews and an additional 2,431 (+9%) job postings for internships and permanent positions that did not involve campus recruiting. 55% of students remained in the state of Iowa for their professional pursuits, while 45% went outside of the state. This is a change from 59% remaining in-state for 2006-2007. There are several sections in this report that may be of interest. They include; 1) top employers hiring our students, 2) a state-by-state list of the relocation activities of our graduates, 3) graduate schools attended, and 4) employment rates by major. We include a breakdown of professional school attendance as well. We are very pleased with the development of the use of ISU CMS, our computerized on-campus interviewing and database management system. This collaborative effort among colleges has given us greater exposure to employers and students and gives us a more seamless appearance to those accessing ISU students for recruiting purposes. As well, we continue to teach BUS AD 301 (Professional Employment Preparation). We thank you for your continued support and look forward to reporting the successes of College of Business students and graduates in the future. Best Wishes,
Kathy Wieland Kathy Wieland Director Business Career Services
