The Directorate of External Affairs

The Directorate of Student Experience

Through its award-winning Marketing Department and internationally renowned Gallery, the Directorate of External Affairs operates as the public face of Arts University Bournemouth. External networks with industry and with alumni combine with internal partnerships with faculties, and the Centre for Creative Learning to help deliver AUB’s mission to be ‘the leading professional university turning creativity into careers.’ Departments and Schools within the Directorate of External Affairs provide a gateway through which prospective domestic, EU and international students are introduced to, and encouraged to remain within, Higher Education. The purpose of the Directorate is thus the establishment, development and maintenance of a distinct student experience for all AUB students, meeting the needs of specialist creative arts education and providing a learning environment which is supportive and safe, and enables each student to fulfil their potential. In addition, as University Secretary, the Director holds responsibility for ensuring legal compliance, and regulatory alignment with the HE operating framework.

These offers develop and empower students to make informed choices about their future educational or professional paths. The provision of specialist services such as Widening Participation, and the work of the International Development department help to embed the principles of accessibility and diversity into all aspects of the university’s work, whilst the English for Academic Purposes provision enhances the International student experience.

The Centre for Creative Learning The Centre of Creative Learning (CCL) consists of Digital Campus Services (DCS), which includes responsibility for Digital Learning; The Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP); the Library and centralised support and development for Research and Knowledge Transfer (RKT). This combined group of professional services departments is tasked with enabling, sharing and disseminating knowledge and practice in their own, local areas of responsibility as well as in areas related to creative learning and RKT across the University. The CCL achieves its cross institutional work through collaborative work with a network of academic and professional services colleagues who come together in various groups, projects and initiatives such as RKT committee; Learning, Teaching & Quality (LTQ) committee; Catalyst funded work; Higher Education Academy (HEA) work; the Digital Learning Environment (DLE); work with the Creative Writer in Residence; Creative Skillset; Research Degrees management (with University of the Arts London) and the nascent area of Archives development and research.

The University’s Finance and Planning Directorate of the University is responsible for the institution’s financial affairs and sustainability, compliance, management information systems, data intelligence and institutional statutory report, audit and returns. The Directorate has three distinct teams: Finance and Procurement, Management Information Systems (MIS) and Registry and Planning each of which reports to the Director of Finance and Planning who has the responsibility to ensure that the teams work together to provide accurate reports and deliver a customer focussed service. The Finance and Procurement team ensures that all purchases are compliant with the University’s Financial Regulations and procurement policies. It facilitates the collection of student fees, funding council grants and services income. It has the responsibility of ensuring that the annual financial statements obtain a clear audit report. MIS plays a critical role in implementing and maintain the University’s major systems; the team reviews associated process and ensure the systems are used to secure efficiencies and increased accuracy. MIS creates many of the reports that the University relies on for strategic decision making. Registry and Planning is the owner of the student record system which is the critical business tool in managing student applications, enrolments, assessment and the generation of Exam Board reports.
