2019 — Annual Report

Executive Director and Board Chair Message As we sit down to write this message, we must acknowledge the current pandemic at hand. Although this annual report addresses Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre’s (PCC) 2019 year, this report is produced in the spring of 2020. Therefore, we would be remiss if we did not address the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March of 2020, our Centre has had to adjust weekly as more details unfold around the coronavirus. We were able to quickly pivot our programs and services in order to offer virtual clinics to our patients. This report was published in June 2020, and we still are met with uncertainty about what the future holds. However, what we do know is that this pandemic has changed the way we operate now and in the future. We want to thank the staff for the commitment they bring to the Centre every day. We’re extremely proud of how our staff members, partners, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community have responded to the COVID-19 crisis. We are optimistic that we will come out of this situation even stronger. Our incredible team of volunteers is another key part of our Centre’s success. Although they are staying home during the pandemic, their dedication to the PCC remains unparalleled. Their knowledge, compassion, support, and care to our patients and their

families is critical. We cannot wait to see them at our Centre again soon.

operations. In 2019, the VAN celebrated testing its 50,000th man.

In 2019, we celebrated our 20th anniversary. Prior to the establishment of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre, a man in Southern Alberta had no single place to go when faced with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Instead, consultation and access to a urologist were scattered throughout various sites around the city. Today, at our Centre, men have rapid access to consultation, diagnosis, treatment options, pharmaceutical research trials, and aftercare, with all of the city’s urologists under one roof. Since the implementation of our rapid access clinics, wait times have been significantly reduced from three to seven months previously, to now just ten days.

Our Research department continues to be an area of growth. Through this program, our patients can be treated with new study drugs they may not have been able to access without being part of a clinical trial.

In the last few years, we have continued to expand our offerings. At our Centre, we had added support for men’s bone health and kidney disease. Additionally, we have added a mental health component to our MAN VAN™ program. The MAN VAN continues to be an essential part of our

Finally, we want to thank our Board of Directors for their time and dedication over the last year. They are an essential part of our Centre. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to departing Board Member, David French. This year, we welcomed a new Board Member, John DeSanti, Executive Chairman of AGAT Laboratories. John brings an invaluable skill set to our Board, and we are incredibly grateful to have him.

On behalf of our team, we proudly present Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre’s 2019 Annual Report.

20 Year Highlights

We have accomplished a great deal in 20 years. This has only been possible with the support of our community.

The Prostate Cancer Institute (now known as Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre) opened its doors. Rapid Access Clinics were introduced, cutting wait times for men to see a specialist from 90 days to 10 days. Canada's first MAN VAN mobile health clinic was introduced to Calgary. Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre moved to a new location, sharing space with urologists at SAIU in the Rockyview General Hospital. PCC sets Guinness World Record for the most amount of men to receive PSA tests within 8 hours. Following the success of the first MAN VAN, a new mobile unit and rural program were started. PCC Research department continued to expand. The APCaRI (Alberta Prostate Cancer Research Initiative) began enrolling patients. Know Your Numbers Men's Health Clinics were added to the MAN VAN program, providing health tests to men over age 18. The Men's Health Clinic was opened across the hall from PCC. A stress check questionnaire was added to the Know Your Numbers component of the MAN VAN program to combine both mental and physical health efforts. Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre celebrated their 20th anniversary.

Research In 2003, Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre’s Clinical Research department began with just one staff member. Every year, the department takes on more clinical trials and hires additional staff to support these trials. Today, the Research department has ten staff members and fifteen clinical trials. We have worked incredibly hard to now be recognized as a top research facility in Canada in terms of quality of work and success in patient recruitment.

RESEARCH IN 2019: Biomarkers: Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a common biomarker for helping to detect prostate cancer. New generations of biomarkers are currently being identified to better identify prostate cancer and help predict prognosis and treatment responses. Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre is currently a part of four different studies looking at these new biomarkers. The information obtained from these important studies will impact what we know about prostate cancer and how to better treat the disease.

The Founding of Calgary PCC DR. DONNELLY

Dr. Bryan Donnelly Staff Urologist

In the 1990’s, Dr. Bryan Donnelly, a staff Urologist in Calgary, found himself, along with the other Urologists in the city, frustrated about a lack of access to programs and services for men suspected of having prostate cancer. Determined to change the system, he started to explore the possibility of setting up a designated center for the disease.

Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre

Dr. Donnelly decided to join forces with Dr. John Saliken, Interventional Radiologist, and Terry O’Callaghan, community philanthropist and former patient. From there, the three of them began working on constructing Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. In 1999, the organization opened its doors at the Rockyview Professional Building. The Centre started with two staff members and a group of passionate volunteers who were eager to share their experiences with newly diagnosed patients. The Centre quickly secured a valuable partnership with EFW Radiology so that men suspected of having prostate cancer could have their biopsies performed in-house.

to reach new heights. Through the help of Rapid Access Clinics and groundbreaking research, the organization grew into the world class medical centre of excellence it is today. Now located in the Southern Alberta Institute of Urology at the Rockyview General Hospital, our current team consists of over 50 staff members and over 70 volunteers.

Dr. Donnelly’s vision was to have all of the city’s urologists collaborate under one roof in order to reduce excessive wait times. Twenty years later, the Centre continues

Thank you to Dr. Donnelly. Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre’s success is a result of your strong leadership, vision, and perseverance over the past twenty years.

2019 — Annual Report

Featured Clinics and Programs Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC) believes that health care is enhanced by the relationships a patient has with both their urologist and our PCC team. Our clinical team has evolved over the past twenty years to a more comprehensive team-based approach which includes the Southern Alberta Institute of Urology (SAIU) urologists, nurses, medical office assistants, and other health care specialists under one roof. This unique model allows patients to have timely access to urologist appointments and allows health care providers to be flexible and adaptable to the changing dynamics of prostate cancer care.

RAPID ACCESS CLINIC 1

ACCESS TO POST-OPERATIVE CARE

This clinic shortens wait times for men who have elevated PSA scores and those who need an initial consultation with their urologist. The goal is to determine if further investigation is required. With the introduction of this one-of-a-kind clinic, wait times to see a urologist were shortened from three to seven months to now just ten days. Many patients are referred for a prostate biopsy which is offered in-house, twice a week by our partner ultrasound technicians from EFW Radiology. The results from the biopsy are forwarded to the urologists who follow-up with the patient to discuss next steps. The urologists also work closely with the research team, where men have the opportunity to participate in the APCaRI research study if they choose. APCaRI is creating a new blood test that they hope will accurately predict the results of a prostate biopsy.

Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre has a designated nurse that provides post-operative care to patients undergoing prostatectomies and cystectomies. Prior to a patient’s release, the nurse will meet with the patient at the Rockyview General Hospital to provide post-operative education, set up a follow-up appointment, and provide them with a contact number in case of any concerns.

10

Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre

This reduces visits to emergency rooms and family doctors and increases the confidence of patients in dealing with their own post-operative care. Additional lifestyle programs are available for patients after surgery. The nurse can connect interested patients to PCC-led yoga or exercise classes as well as to a Life After Prostate Class which provides education on nutrition, exercises, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and sexual health. All these classes are led by experts in their fields.

Volunteers Our volunteers are our greatest asset and we would not be able to do what we do without their help. Our Centre has over eighty caring volunteers who help to ensure our programs and services run efficiently. These incredible individuals arrive early, leave late, and make every minute they are at our Centre count. Our volunteer program started twenty years ago with a few patients who wanted to share their experiences with prostate cancer and help newly diagnosed men. Today, the program has grown to include many volunteers who have a desire to share their time and talent with Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. The many duties they perform are diverse but focus on patient needs and support programs. It is impossible to put into words how much we value the time, expertise, and energy each of these individuals puts into the PCC.

Mental Wellness Initiative In 2019, the MAN VAN program piloted a mental wellness component for men visiting the VAN. A short questionnaire, known as the ‘stress check’, helps detect symptoms of depression, one of the most common mental health concerns that men face. In just 26 clinics, 950 men participated in the stress check. Out of those 950 participants, 94 were recommended to follow up with a family doctor. 40 men reported recent

thoughts of suicide, affirming the importance of the mental wellness initiative. As men are less likely than women to see a health care professional for a mental health concern, the MAN VAN has a unique opportunity to educate men about the importance of good mental health. Starting in 2020, all Know Your Numbers men’s health clinics now include the stress check questionnaire.

Featured Fundraisers THE BIG BALL GALA Over the past 20 years, Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre has expanded its work into other areas of men's health with our Women for Men's Health Program. This year, the Centre’s very own board member and founder of Women for Men’s Health, Dr. Shelley Spaner, spearheaded the second annual Big Ball Gala. With the help of a 16-person committee, the event took place at Hotel Arts on February 1st, 2019. Dr. Spaner’s vision for the evening was to focus fundraising efforts on men’s mental health. Globally, men die by suicide three to four times more often than women. This statistic is increased in men over the age of 65. With these staggering numbers in mind, Dr. Spaner called upon Karen Gosbee to share her own story and co-chair the event. Karen’s husband, George Gosbee, was an incredibly successful Calgary businessman who took his own life in November 2017. Karen, and her daughter Isla, brought the crowd to tears as they talked about how

crucial it is to “break the stigma” and engage in an open dialogue around mental health and depression. The successful event raised over $100,000 and provided guests with a memorable night filled with fabulous food, stunning décor, superb auction items, and incredible live music. The evening would not have been possible without the help of our presenting sponsor Hotel Arts and their amazing team.

NUTRAISER In 2013, the first Village NUTRaiser was introduced to Calgary through a partnership between Jim Button, co-founder of Village Brewery, and the team at local pub Bottlescrew Bill’s. For this fundraiser, local celebrities create a unique beer by combining the testicles of a bull with secret ingredients to enhance the final product. Each year, the event continues to gain more momentum and has featured local celebrities like W. Brett Wilson, Bret Hart, Tony Spoletini, and Gerry Forbes. Each celebrity constructs their own unique prairie oyster ale. Once the beer is created, a huge party is held on the eve of the Calgary Stampede. At this event, casks are uncorked and all the guests enjoy the unique ale while raising money for Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.

A huge thank you to all those who have been involved with the Village NUTRaiser in the past seven years. We cannot wait to celebrate more in the coming years!

ROBINSON SUPPLY Robinson Supply is a leader in the distribution of plumbing, lighting, and electrical products to the construction industry. PRIDDIS GREENS CHARITY CLASSIC In 1999, the Priddis Greens Charity Golf Committee launched the Priddis Greens Charity Classic — an annual event that has supported the work of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC) over the past 20 years. The unique three-day event starts with an opening gala evening and is followed by a two-day golfing experience. From its inception, the funds from this tournament helped us continue to offer valuable programs and services to our patients. As Dr. Bryan Donnelly, co-founder of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre said “The support from the Priddis Greens Charity Classic came at a crucial time when we were contemplating closing our doors.” The original tournament participants included some of Calgary’s most prestigious business leaders in the home building industry. Today, the Priddis Greens Charity Classic includes many of the original golf teams as well as new community philanthropists. With the help of the tournament golfers, the Priddis Greens golf members, and the PCC committee members, the annual tournament continues to be a huge success in supporting the work of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. The event remains one of the most highly anticipated annual events for Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.

To date, the funds raised from this event have totaled over $6.8 million dollars for our Centre. Thank you to the Priddis Greens Charity Golf Committee for their continued generosity.

REMINGTON CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre has partnered with the Remington Charity Golf Classic since 2013. Since its inception, the committee has tripled in size. We are so grateful for the continued dedication and hard work of these ten philanthropic committee members. Each of these members have had a personal connection with prostate cancer and are willing to champion our cause through both their actions and finances. The tournament’s success can also be attributed to the support of the committee’s personal and business associates. These individuals participate in the tournament and provide coveted sponsorships and auction items to benefit the cause. We are so thankful for the ongoing support of this event from these community leaders.

To date, Remington Charity Classic has raised over $3 million dollars for Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.

SCOTT LAND STOMP Stampede starts with STOMP! For over twenty years, Gregg Scott and his amazing team at Scott Land and Lease invite hundreds of attendees to enjoy a yearly Stampede party like no other at The Wildhorse Saloon. The 22nd Annual Scott Land Stomp took place on July 4, 2019 and was a major hit. Thanks to Gregg, his team, and the generosity of the guests in attendance, over $25,000 was raised for our Centre! As we reflect on our 20th anniversary, we are so proud to have Scott Land and Lease as one of our leading partners.

To date, the Scott Land Stomp has raised over $250,000 for our Centre.

#NAKEDESPY In 2010, Megan Szanik, owner of contemporary fashion boutique espy, approached Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre with a unique and potentially risqué fundraising idea. The event would be called #nakedespy, and it would involve around a hundred men stripping down to their boxers to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. It was a huge success! Ten years later this event remains one of Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre’s most original and lucrative fundraisers.

Thank you to Megan and her wonderful espy team for raising a total of over $200,000 for our Centre from #nakedespy.

20 Years of Keeping It In Calgary Keep It In Calgary, our November fundraising initiative, was created in 2017 in an effort to raise awareness for early detection and further engage our local Calgary community. Every year, the campaign encourages individuals to keep their money in Calgary by giving locally, in order to help us reach our goal of $100,000 in donations. Although the campaign has only been running for three years, support from our community began long before that, with the opening of our doors in 1999. All funds raised in the campaign stay in the Calgary area, where they are allocated for treatment and support of individuals in our community who have been affected by prostate cancer. For the past twenty years, supporting local men has been a key component of our organization’s mission. Staying true to this belief, in 2019, to commemorate our 20th anniversary, we partnered with eleven local businesses from various industries. These businesses agreed to donate a certain portion of their sales

throughout November to the campaign. Calgarian businessman Don Bayrack also generously stepped up to match all donations up to $50,000. This, along with the support from individual donors led us to not only reaching our goal, but surpassing it.

We are so grateful for the support we have received in the last 20 years and are excited to see what the future will bring. #LiveLocalGiveLocal
