Digital Herbarium Concept: Use digital cameras or cell phones with automated image GPS geotagging. Then upload images to Flickr where volunteers tag species name, and GPS data allows density mapping of various species relative to various environmental conditions.

How can we build a database of naturally occurring Gowanus species that have adapted to it’s current urban ecology ? 0
2,000 ft
DRAFT MAP for Preliminary Discussion of Data Collection Techniques
Gowanus Watershed Potential Wetland Vegetation Areas (existing topographic sink, where rainwater naturally collects) General Hypothetical Rainwater Runoff Pattern. These are based on natural landscape channels where water would run with no building obstructions or storm drain diversions. May be indicative of potential seed and sediment accumulation areas
Open Space (Existing Parks, but also includes any major vacant lot, or vegetated areas 40 feet away from building. Note that this excludes “crack ecologies” along fence and wall lines where majority of biodiversity is concentrated March 2011 Preliminary Discussion Ecosystem Analysis Map Gowanda Memorial Foundation
Sources Base Map 2007 New York City Digital Base Map, 2004 USGS Digital Elevation Model, Potential Superfund Contamination Area from Plunz & Culligan “Eco Gowanus” Historic Sanborn Map Study, NYCDEP Sewer Maps, NYCDCP, NYCDOITT data, and custom open space and hydrology layers developed by Eymund Diegel, eymund@gmail.com. The Gowanda Memorial foundation is a fictional body dreaming about a swimmable Gowanus.
TEST LAYER
As the Parks Department’s “Open Space” often only maps lifeless astroturfed and tar areas, “Green” areas were extracted from the 2004 aerials to indicate actual living biomass, with habitat and urban climate value. General Area with heavy industrial soil contamination This is a rough base map to guide testing of a digital herbarium and database of plant species ocurring in the Gowanus Anthrome Watershed. The goal is to identify Global City native species most suited to supporting Green Infrastructure water, soil and air pollution management efforts.
How can we map Gowanus Ecology? Where are different species living? What sites should we target to increase Biodiversity?
