Many Milestones.

One Mission. 2011 annual report

This past year’s journey has been a remarkable one,

and we look forward to the road ahead—together.

Dear Friends, Milestones are a part of every journey. They often represent progress along the way, a significant landmark or noteworthy accomplishment. At Providence, our organization’s long, rich history is filled with dozens of milestones that mark our evolution into the mission-focused, award-winning medical center we are today. And this past year, we celebrated one such milestone. In June 2011, we opened the doors at the new state-of-the-art, 12-story, 680,000 square-foot Cymbaluk Medical Tower. And although an important milestone, it does not mark the end of our journey. It is the first significant step in the Medical Center’s transformation to a 21st century healthcare facility—and one that will enable Providence to keep pace with advances in medicine, the growth of our community and the needs of our most vulnerable citizens. Now a year later, we look back on 2011, the opening of the Tower and all who invested in The Campaign for Providence with deep gratitude. By the end of last year, more than $16 million was raised in support of the new Medical Tower. Such motivated and generous participation early in the Campaign is unprecedented and has prepared us to launch Phase II of the Campaign as we set out to raise funds to meet our ultimate $25 million goal. In addition to surpassing the halfway mark in The Campaign for Providence, the year 2011 is noteworthy for an additional significant reason—Providence General Foundation achieved an all-time record of $9.1 million in new gifts and commitments. In fact, the Providence General Foundation raised more philanthropic support than any of the 27 other Foundations in the Providence system; and we were the most cost effective, as measured by the ratio of expenses incurred for each dollar raised. We sincerely thank each person who has contributed time, treasure and talent to the Providence General Foundation in the past year, making it our best ever. As you read through the pages of this report, we hope you will be as inspired as we are by the incredible and generous response of support from our community. This past year’s journey has been a remarkable one, and we look forward to the road ahead—together. Sincerely,

Randy Petty Chief Development Officer Providence General Foundation

Celebrating a

Milestone On June 14, 2011, Providence Regional celebrated the official opening day of the new Marshall and Katherine Cymbaluk Medical Tower. Every aspect of the facility—from the architectural design to the features that support innovative patient care—was inspired by the reputation of excellence for which Providence is known. This achievement required incredible commitment and investment on the part of many people and organizations, from all walks of life and from every corner of this region. Generous donors—individuals, charitable foundations and local businesses, and members of the Medical Center family, including employees, physicians and board members—joined together to support Providence Regional in creating one of the most advanced clinical facilities in the western United States.

The result is... 2011 Annual Report

4 2011 Annual Report

The 12-story, 680,000 square-foot Cymbaluk Medical Tower added the capacity for 240 inpatient beds, bringing Providence Regional’s bed count to a much-needed 491 patient beds. The expansion cost approximately $500 million including $60 million in new technology and equipment. This investment has produced a spectacular facility—a world-class workshop in which physicians and staff can continue to provide the award-winning care for which they are known. Providence Regional’s physical environment now matches the level of human skill, talent and compassion it has become known for. For people with medical conditions requiring an overnight stay, the Tower’s acute-care inpatient rooms offer comfort and clinical excellence to patients and their families. With 144 patient rooms, the Acute Care Department encompasses four floors of the Tower. These floors are organized into different specialty-care units, including cardiac telemetry, medical telemetry, neurotelemetry, stroke, neurosurgery, orthopedics and general surgery.

Spacious, predominantly private rooms offer integrated, leading edge safety and comfort features, sliding frosted glass doors, comfortable guest accommodations, and windows in both the patient room and bathroom. The Tower features state-of-the-art Surgical & Interventional Services that usher in an entirely new age of surgical capability and innovation. Four previously separate clinical units—Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Catheterization Labs and Electrophysiology Labs—are located together in the Tower’s surgical suites. Rooms contain digital audio-visual equipment, so physicians can easily view their patient’s digital information, including scans, images, reports, data and more, via screens on the wall. In addition, the department is designed for patient and family privacy, with private pre- and post-op rooms with space for two family members, and sliding glass doors for added privacy.

An entire floor in the Tower is devoted to Emergency Services. This department has 79 large, private treatment rooms and 60,000 square feet of space, all designed to help staff treat patients quickly, with minimal, if any, waiting time, and to keep patients and family members comfortable during their visit. Emergency Services includes dedicated treatment rooms for triage, major emergencies, secure holding and trauma cases. And thanks to its covered patient drop-off area and entrance, a dedicated ambulance entrance and rooftop helicopter pad, getting to Emergency Services is quick and easy at a time when every second counts.

Whether patients are hospitalized in the Tower as inpatients, or visit the facility for routine imaging appointments, they have access to some of the most advanced digital imaging technology on the market today— including the world’s first high-definition, ultra-low-dose CT scanner. In fact, $20 million has been invested in the Tower’s imaging equipment alone. In addition to its advanced equipment, the Phil and Kelly Johnson Diagnostic Imaging Center has been designed for patients’ convenience, comfort and privacy. Imaging equipment is now also located right in Emergency Services. As a result, patients who require an X-ray or CT scan no longer need to move to another location for their exam.

Reason to

Celebrate

June 7: Hour for the Tower Club employees were the first to toast to the new Tower. June 8: Archbishop of Seattle, The Most Reverend J. Peter Sartain, and Sisters of Providence participated in the official blessing of the new Tower.

During the first two weeks of June the new Medical Tower opened its doors for a community celebration. The Foundation hosted several events to express appreciation to the many donors who invested early in The Campaign for Providence with generous support and to unveil the Campaign donor wall. Among those donors, none would be more notable than Katherine and Marshall Cymbaluk, who stepped forward in January 2011 with an unprecedented $5 million commitment. Additional events were hosted throughout the week for employees, physicians and community leaders. The events finally culminated with a two-day open house welcoming the general public to experience the beautiful new Tower firsthand. More than 8,000 individuals helped celebrate the opening of the new Tower prior to its official opening day on June 14, 2011. 8 2011 Annual Report

Journey Continues The

Launching Phase II of The Campaign for Providence

10 2011 Annual Report

With immense and unprecedented support from the community, Providence Regional has made great strides toward transforming health care in the region. Beyond the Tower, needed upgrades and renovations are beginning on other parts of the campus, bringing all facilities to the state-of-the-art level that is necessary to raise the bar for health care in this region. While the finish line is in sight, it has not been reached yet. The total cost of Providence Regional Medical Center’s campus transformation—including the new Cymbaluk Medical Tower and the renovation and upgrade of other hospital facilities—is $500 million. Demonstrating a clear commitment to Everett and Snohomish County, Providence is providing $475 million—a substantial portion of this total cost. The Campaign for Providence seeks to raise the remaining, but especially critical $25 million balance. To raise $25 million is a tremendous undertaking—even in the best economic times. But with a proven plan and an army of dedicated volunteers, there was no doubt that it was possible. More than 70 community leaders, business owners, physicians and compassionate friends of Providence have come forward to serve on the Steering Committee for The Campaign for Providence, the largest fund-raising effort ever undertaken in the region.

One Step at a Time When presented with a challenging goal, the best approach often involves dividing the work into smaller, manageable parts. With The Campaign for Providence, efforts were directed into two separate phases, with the first phase now nearing completion. The Campaign for Providence Phase I — Laying the Foundation When the Campaign began in the fall of 2008, the Foundation first approached the people at Providence Regional’s core. They responded with extraordinary generosity. To date, the medical staff has contributed approximately $4 million; employees have given more than $1 million; and members of the Medical Center and Foundation Boards have donated more than $860,000. These members of the Providence family demonstrated their faith in the project, inspiring the next-closest group of supporters, the Medical Center’s established donors, partners and friends, to step forward with their own contributions. These donors, in turn, inspired additional giving among people in their own personal and business networks. More connections were forged and solidified, more donors were inspired to make their gift commitments, and the Campaign surpassed its halfway mark with more than $16.4 raised to date. are enthusiastic about stepping up to make their own contribution.”

Moving into the second phase of the Campaign, help from volunteers to broaden the reach of the Campaign is crucial to its success.

Bob Leach, the other co-chair of the committee, says one of the committee’s primary jobs in Phase II is to identify people who haven’t had the opportunity to learn about this Campaign and invite them to invest in the project.

Central to this work are the members of the Campaign’s Major Gifts Committee— community leaders focusing on securing gifts ranging from $25,000 to $250,000. Doug Bell, one of the co-chairs of the Major Gifts Committee, says the people in the community that his team has approached are very receptive and supportive of this project. “People understand the importance of this effort,” he says. “The Tower is built. It was a huge accomplishment. And we have a lot of momentum to carry us forward in the second phase of the Campaign.” “As we go out and make contact with people in the community, they see the tremendous investment in what’s been done and they’re impressed,” he says. “They understand that the community is a partner with the hospital in this project, and they

“We’re reaching out to people who have an interest and appreciate the impact of this tremendous project, but maybe have not yet been formally asked to participate,” Bob says. “I believe that is what’s most special about this next phase.” “We’re talking to people who perhaps have not historically contributed to the hospital, but we’re finding that they are very responsive when given the opportunity to tour the new facility and hear our story,” Bob adds. “Their response is deep gratitude for this level of healthcare excellence, and most want to help us reach the finish line by personally investing in the hospital’s mission.”

Heart Campus

The of the

The Tower, standing tall on the Colby Campus, is the cornerstone of Providence Regional’s transformation. Shortly after the new facility’s completion, a number of complementary projects added additional amenities and features to complete the transformation of the full campus into a 21st century healthcare facility. At the heart of the now expanded campus, a unique and welcoming “Main Street” unites the clinical facilities and creates a central hub on campus. These amenities are removed from patient care areas but conveniently located to serve as a place where employees, physicians, visitors and family members can meet, take a break and access services they need during their time on campus.

14 2011 Annual Report

The new concourse is located in the former Emergency Department space and includes the following amenities. A new café provides a varied menu and convenient meal choices. Food stations offer world cuisine, home-cooked favorites, and various quick options for those who need to eat on-the-run. An inviting dining area serves as a relaxing setting for taking a break from a busy day. A contemporary new chapel, named Ascension Chapel, seats 75 and offers a central place of healing and reflection for patients, visitors, staff and physicians. Unique features of this space include a stained glass window preserved from the original chapel at Providence Hospital in Seattle, and a beautiful altar, tabernacle, lectern and holy-water font handcrafted by a local artist.

A full-service retail pharmacy replaces the existing pharmacy in the adjacent Medical Office Building. This facility provides patients and their families—as well as staff members—a convenient place to pick up prescriptions or over-the-counter medication and sundries. A new gift shop offers an expanded array of merchandise for anyone who needs to buy a gift while they are on campus. The new space is almost twice the size of the former gift shop. As in the past, proceeds from gift shop sales benefit the Providence General Children’s Association, and organization made up of volunteers who raise funds for the healthcare needs of children in our region.

Building A Bridge A new sky bridge now links the Cymbaluk Medical Tower and the original hospital with the 1717 Building which houses the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership and the Providence Medical Group Cranial, Spine and Joint Clinic. This bridge serves a critical role in connecting various centers of care on campus. Patients and staff now can move quickly from one corner of the campus to another, without being exposed to the weather or having to cross a busy street.

Preparing for the

Road Ahead The Expanding Role of Education to Equip Clinicians

18 2011 Annual Report

When the new Cymbaluk Medical Tower opened last year, it freed space in the existing Colby Campus for Providence Regional to relocate its Patient Simulation Unit— known as the Sim Unit—into a new, larger, permanent location. The Unit consists of a simulated hospital wing, equipped with a nursing station and six patient rooms that contain the same equipment and technology found in active patient rooms in the Medical Tower. Some of the Sim rooms even contain computerized patient mannequins that have a heartbeat, respiratory system, blinking eyes and other lifelike anatomical features.

Simulation Saves Lives The Sim Unit’s relocation and expansion marked a new era in the advancement of medical education at Providence Regional. It offers a unique and valuable means for doctors, nurses and clinicians to learn new skills, as well as to maintain competence in high-risk techniques that they do not encounter with great frequency in their day-to-day work.

The Sim Unit and its Mission At Providence Regional, the Sim Unit offers clinicians a hands-on, near-reality experience that can improve clinical performance and decision-making skills. This type of training can reduce the risk of errors during actual patient encounters. In a nutshell, simulation offers advantages of increased patient safety, quality improvement and “cemented” behavior change through reinforced learning. At Providence, the Sim Unit is most commonly used for student training, general nurse orientation, competency training, emergency and medical-surgical residency programs, IV therapy training, Advanced Cardiac Life Support training and first responder drills. The repetitive hands-on process of simulation helps cement the muscle memory involved in these techniques for improved recall and application in real-life scenarios. In an ongoing collaboration with Everett Community College, nursing students from various educational levels also use the Sim Unit to learn and practice their nursing skills and critical thinking. And in an effort to put this resource to use for education in the wider community, the simulation mannequins and other elements of the Unit are regular features at community health clinics and health fairs, where they are used to demonstrate potentially life-saving techniques such as CPR, as well as a wide range of health and medical information, to kids and adults in the general public.

Funding Simulation for Patient Safety In 2010, the Singh Family Fund for Patient Safety and Quality was established to support programs and initiatives that advance patient safety at Providence Regional. The fund, named in honor of Mr. Paramjit Singh, was seeded with a $2.1 million gift from the Medical Center and will be used toward development of programs that promote patient safety, quality and patient-family centered care. The Singh Family Fund for Patient Safety and Quality was instrumental in the development of the Sim Unit, providing $150,000 in 2011 to help underwrite the costs associated with the operation of the Unit’s six simulation rooms and education programs.

Nursing residents who are recent Registered Nursing graduates are regular visitors to the Simulation Unit, as they take advantage of the hands-on, risk-free learning opportunity that medical simulation provides. In 2011, one nursing resident in particular used her fresh, simulationgained knowledge to great effect. The day’s lesson: recognizing the indicators for and managing patients with sepsis, a serious blood infection. The resident and her fellow nurses conducted history and physical exams on the mannequins, assessed their “patients’” current condition, and evaluated lab criteria that can indicate a high risk for sepsis. The timing of this lesson proved to be invaluable. The next day, on duty at the hospital, this nursing resident single-handedly detected sepsis in one of her patients. It was an impressive accomplishment for a newly graduated nurse still making the transition from student to professional—and just one example of the way simulated learning can translate to improved safety and outcomes for patients at Providence Regional.

In celebration of the Epicurean Affair’s 25th anniversary, 200 guests gathered on March 8, 2011, at Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant in Everett for an evening filled with excellent food, wine and fun activities. Chaired by Dr. Tom Smith and Jean McMahon, the event raised more than $100,000 for programs at the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership. Budd Gould, owner of Anthony’s, was also awarded the inaugural Epicurean Affair Budd Gould award for his 25 years of supporting the community. Thank you to Anthony’s HomePort, the guests and event sponsors, including signature sponsor The Everett Clinic, for their generous support.

For the third year in a row, the Everett Silvertips partnered with the Providence General Foundation to ‘Pink the Rink’ and raise support for the Providence Comprehensive Breast Center. Players wore limited-edition pink jerseys that were later signed and auctioned at the Pink the Rink event. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales, auction items and other fun activities was directed to provide free mammograms for women in need. This year’s event raised nearly $80,000, a large portion coming from a generous $50,000 donation from local Safeway stores.

This past year’s Festival, November 29 to December 3, will be remembered as the one that “sparkled.” With Festival Chairs Don & Shirley Ayres leading the way, the event took on a classy, modern look. The rooms were draped in white with cool blues, silvers, hints of cranberry—and lots of sparkle. As always, the elegant trees were the center of attention as tree designers outdid themselves once again. Throughout the four-day event more than 4,000 people made their way through the Everett Comcast Arena to experience the beautiful trees and holiday décor. A big thank you goes out to title sponsor Mortenson Construction, lead sponsors Premera and Radia, Inc., and the many generous supporters, volunteers and guests who helped make the 2011 Festival a success.

The women of the Everett Golf and Country Club teed off for their 34th annual fundraising tournament in the spring of 2011. The event raised more than $14,000 for the Linda Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. This was the 14th year the group golfed in support of the fund, bringing the cumulative total raised for local cancer patients in need to nearly $175,000. In July 2011, runners took to the streets in the Columbia Funding Mortgage’s Run of the Mill 5K race to help support area cancer patients. The event raised $8,000 for the Linda Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. A sincere thank you to the organizers and participants from both of these local events for helping make such a significant impact on area cancer patients in need.
