Creating Healthier Communities Together 2014 Annual Report

1

Dear Friends, Motivated by a deep desire to improve the health and well-being of our region, you joined with Providence General Foundation to help us serve our communities with vital programs and services. Thanks to your generosity and support, 2014 was a year of new beginnings, inspiring accomplishments and noteworthy achievements. One of the year’s highlights included the opening of the Providence Autism Center. Backed by the enthusiastic support from hundreds of donors, the Autism Center is making a significant impact in the lives of many children struggling with the challenges of autism. Thanks to the dedicated Autism Center staff, the Center surpassed its goal of serving 64 children and their families in its first year. Please take a moment to read about the amazing support generated through Festival of Trees and the record-breaking fund-a-need. Another exciting new initiative was the launch of the Providence Institute for Healthier Communities (PIHC). Along with numerous community partners, Providence pledged to improve the health of people living in Snohomish County focusing on five areas that have the most impact. Thanks to Foundation donors, several of the PIHC’s programs including InsideOut: The Original Organ show and the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP), have received funding and are helping to improve health and wellness in our community.

Providence General Foundation Mission Providence General Foundation cultivates the charitable spirit of the community by raising and distributing funds to promote health and wellness primarily through the programs and services of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Our fundraising efforts are guided by our core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship.

Providence Mission As people of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.

Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic celebrated its 10 year anniversary with an event honoring the community partners who work with the Clinic, staff, physicians, volunteers and donors who have helped carry on the important work of serving the most vulnerable and underserved patients in Snohomish County. As part of the Mother Gamelin Service Line—where programs and services operate at an expected financial loss, yet are offered as an integral part of our ministry—the clinic provides care to more than 250 patients every week and continues to grow in order to accommodate the needs of our community. We are pleased to report that the Foundation transferred almost $4.8 million to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett to impact important initiatives while also reporting the lowest expenses in the past five years. Throughout the report, you will see the impact of your giving and the results of your commitment to Providence. On behalf of all of those who benefit from your generosity, we sincerely thank you. We appreciate your partnership and investment in our community.

The Providence Autism Center

Autism Center Opening INNOVATIVE CARE FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM In August 2014, the 3,000square-foot Providence Autism Center opened on the fifth floor of our Pavilion for Women and Children on Pacific Avenue, culminating a project that was years in the making. At the opening ceremony, five children who had completed a pilot mirroring the Center’s curriculum provided a clear demonstration of the Center’s effectiveness. “It was such a thrilling, heart-touching event,” says Christie Tipton, manager of the Children’s

Center. “These five ‘graduates’ walked into the crowd and—unscripted—started their circle time as they’d learned to do in the program. Before their time with us, the noise in the room would have been too much. It was a touching symbol of the progress they’d made and the impact this program can have.” The opening included blessing by D.W. Donovan, vice president of Mission and Spiritual Care, and featured a painting contributed by one of the pilot graduates’ family members, entitled “Embracing Autism.” Christie says the painting now hangs in the Center’s education room, and it reminds all who see it of the program’s vision. “We are embracing autism,” Christie says. “We aren’t afraid of it, it doesn’t cause us to despair. It motivates us to advocate for and help these very unique children who have so much to offer, but need special care to learn how to express themselves.” Thanks to donors like you… Support through fundraising efforts such as the annual Festival of Trees made the

The Providence Autism Center is one of only three centers of excellence in the state of Washington. The Center offers a 12-week, comprehensive treatment program that focuses on teaching foundational skills needed for effective communication, adaptive skills and positive behavior management that helps children transition into school. Parents are included in the program and must commit to seven hours of education each week for the duration of the program.

new Center a reality. Our faithful donors allowed the Foundation to gift $906,000 to help pay for capital and programmatic needs, allowing the expansion of autism services offered through the Providence Children’s Center. Now, parents in Snohomish County no longer have to drive to Seattle or wait up to 18 weeks for a diagnosis.

Lily’s story Four-year-old Lily from Marysville was diagnosed with autism in 2014, but she was referred to Providence at just 18 months old. “She wasn’t talking and doing other things she should have been,” says Lily’s mom, Christie. “We had a therapist coming to the house once a week, but it wasn’t enough.” Soon after it opened, Lily completed the 12-week program at the Autism Center.

Autism is a complex brain disorder that hinders a child’s ability to develop according to normal standards. Although the causes of autism are not known, research shows that treatment and intervention before age six can help build a foundation for success in school and life. “It completely changed communication in our family,” Christie says. “In particular, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) taught Lily to tell me what she wants to eat, and other routine details like that. Before, it was a guessing game.” (PECS, which parallels typical language development and encourages functional communication and social skills, is a technique used often in the Center.) “The before-and-after for Lily has been extraordinary,” Christie says. “She is more cooperative in our everyday life. It’s totally changed the communication in our family and made us feel better able to help Lily as she makes her way in the world.”

Fundraising efforts To support the ongoing operations of the Center, the Foundation has launched a $1.5 million initiative. The fundraising effort began in 2014 with lead gifts announced at Festival of Trees. Steve and Carol Klein, Mary Jane Miller, Jamie and Kathy Hunter and Marcia Wharton, MD, and Paul Smith gave a combined $85,000 to help kick off this important initiative. The Kleins say they support the Autism Center because it fits with their desire to help our community’s children, and because they have seen first-hand the impact that the Center has on kids. “I urge community members to come down and see the Center for themselves,” Carol says. “Seeing the work that’s being done here is what hooked us. The staff, teachers, therapists and assistants…everyone is so dedicated and committed.” Carol worked as a speech therapist early in her career, and she remembers working with children who had been diagnosed with autism years ago. “Back then, it was a different world,” she says. “It’s so great to see the progress in autism treatment, and the leading-edge care that’s now available right here in our community. I’m so pleased that our local families have this resource, right here.”

Institute for Healthier Communities BUILDING A FOUNDATION Throughout 2014, work was underway in preparation for the launch of the Providence Institute for Healthier Communities. The Institute’s purpose—as its name suggests—is to improve the health of people living in Snohomish County in the next five years. The Institute’s Advisory Council created a shared health agenda to improve activity, nutrition, mental and emotional well-being and civic health throughout the county, and relies on a leading-edge model that emphasizes behavior change. “Just 20 percent of health happens in the doctor’s office. Our goal is to change health in our county through partnerships—not just by going to the doctor, but by changing the way we live,” said Scott Forslund, the Institute’s executive director. Leading, and lifting up The Institute is a partnership among Providence, the Snohomish County Health Leadership Coalition, business, government, nonprofits and county residents.

Preston M. Simmons, chief executive officer, Providence Health & Services Northwest Washington Region, said one of the key reasons for the Institute is not only to support the efforts for Snohomish County to be the healthiest county in the country, but to create a model that can be shared with other communities served by Providence Health & Services as well as a model for others throughout the country. “For example, Snohomish County has a fair amount of obesity, which is a precursor to cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other problems. The Institute’s partners are implementing nutrition and exercise programs that will reduce obesity rates, and therefore related disease, for the future.” The key is strength in numbers, and shared commitment. “No one organization can do it alone, but in partnership, community organizations do have the resources and influence to create health changes that are needed to make our community healthier,” he said.

Funding change Providence General Foundation donors fuel community change thanks to their support of programs that implement the Institute’s preventative approach, such as InsideOut: The Original Organ Show (see sidebar) and Centering Pregnancy, an innovative, group-based prenatal program. Complete Health Improvement Plan The Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) is an affordable, lifestyle enrichment program designed to reduce disease risk factors through the adoption of better health habits and appropriate lifestyle modifications. CHIP programs are offered in more than 350 cities across North America. Kevin Clay, MD, is medical director for the Institute and

primary investigator for a Snohomish County CHIP study. “Goals for the CHIP programs are to lower blood cholesterol, hypertension, and blood sugar levels and reduce excess weight,” Dr. Clay says. “This is done by improving dietary choices, enhancing daily exercise, increasing support systems and decreasing stress, all to help prevent and reverse disease.”

Local business leaders committed to creating healthy changes in our community

The Original Organ Show This tremendously popular and innovative educational program uses real human organs to demonstrate the effects of smoking, drug use and other lifestyle choices. Providence offers the program at no cost and reaches as many as 12,000 Snohomish County middle and high schools students each year. This reach and impact is due in large part by a generous grant from the Providence General Foundation.

Dr. Clay said the goal of the study is to prove the savings in our own community, and then launch it more widely through the YMCA, schools, churches and community centers throughout Snohomish County. Several studies have demonstrated that the CHIP participants have reduced health care cost on average of $2,000 per participant; the savings are from fewer office visits and reduced medications and are often sustained for up to three years.

Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic CELEBRATING A DECADE OF CARE FOR THE UNDERSERVED Last May, the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic invited donors, supporters, staff and volunteers together to share an incredible milestone: 10 years of serving the community. The event honored thousands of patients served and hope restored to countless members of our community who have struggled to gain access to the most basic medical and mental health care. As part of the poignant and joyful celebration, Marcia Wharton, M.D., the clinic’s medical director, recounted highlights from the facility’s decade of history and growth.

8

“In these years, we’ve learned so much,” Dr. Wharton said. “The care we provide is complex—our patients have many areas of need—first food, clothing and shelter, then medical care. We have learned to understand and be sensitive to cultural differences, and to find ways to help the large percentage of our patients who face mental health diagnoses in addition to their medical need.” “Through the years, we have done our best to offer all possible care under one roof.” Evolving through the years The Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic opened in early 2004 with two primary goals: To provide access to all patients in our community who needed health care, regardless of their financial situation, and to train future health care providers interested in caring for the underserved. The clinic operates as part of the Emilie Gamelin Service Line, which provides clinical services at a financial loss for Providence, but that meet an identified community need.

The original 3,400-squarefoot clinic was located in a strip mall on Broadway, near a bus line. It gradually became the medical home for thousands of patients who previously had no access to primary care in any other settings in the community. The demand for services continuously exceeded the clinic’s space and provider availability. Expansions in 2007 and 2009 added space, exam rooms and staff, and allowed the clinic to offer dental and behavioral health care services. In June 2013, the clinic moved into a larger, specially designed space in the newly constructed Everett Community College Health Sciences Building, located directly across the street from the former clinic. With this move, the clinic could care for more patients and more efficiently train nurse practitioner students in primary care and mental health care, while also offering additional clinical rotations for medical assistant students.

Since that first clinic opened in 2004, patient visits have increased 16 to 26 percent annually. Today the clinic provides more than 250 patient visits every week. “Today, the clinic is able to provide a collection of services that help our patients maximize their potential, particularly those for whom it would be easy to fall through the cracks,” Dr. Wharton says. “We are committed to being part of the solution—to continue to partner with our community to provide patients with access to medical, mental health and dental care. And we are immensely grateful to the donors and volunteers who have partnered with us through the years.”

In Memory: Steve & Jo Saunders REMEMBERING STEVE AND JO SAUNDERS, STEADFAST SUPPORTERS The year 2014 marked a great loss to Providence and the local community. Stephen (Steve) and Josephine (Jo) Saunders, who were known and loved by so many, both passed away during the year. Jo passed away on June 7, 2014, in Sandpoint Idaho, after decades of service and devotion to Providence and the community. Jo taught kindergarten during the war years in Everett; one of her students invited her to his home for a family dinner, where she met another dinner guest: Steve. They were married in 1949 by Jo’s father Clyde, who was the Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court. Through the years, Jo was a dedicated volunteer in the hospital gift shop. She also served in many other community volunteer positions. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor, sense of style, love of adventure and her graciousness.

10

Steve, who passed away on December 2, 2014, served for more than four decades on hospital boards and committees, including the Providence General Foundation board. He attended Washington State University and graduated with a degree in business administration. He served in the Naval Reserves during WWII, then returned to Everett, where his business ventures included residential real estate development. Steve and Jo served as honorary co-chairs of The Campaign for Providence. From their final home in Sandpoint, Idaho, the couple stayed actively involved in the campaign, offering their encouragement and enthusiasm. Additionally, they personally made a $500,000 gift to support the campaign. At the start of The Campaign for Providence, Randy Petty, former chief development officer of the Foundation, said that the community had developed a deep affection for Steve and Jo, so it was only natural to ask them to serve as honorary chairs of the campaign. “Virtually every local community organiza-

tion has been touched by the lives and generosity of Steve and Jo,” Randy said. “Together they leave a legacy of kindness, generosity, leadership and service that cannot begin to be measured.” Dottie Piasecki, former executive director for the Foundation, knew Jo and Steve well. “Steve served on the Foundation’s board of directors well into his 90s,” Dottie said. “He was a strong leader with a sharp mind, respectful nature and influential spirit. He made a significant contribution to the hospital and Foundation, especially following the 1994 merger of the two hospitals.” Dottie said that Steve was an advocate for unified quality health care and the catalyst that helped bridge the once-divided, two-hospital community. “Steve exemplified the ‘perfect gentleman.’ He was debonair in every sense—generous, caring and fiercely loyal to the community he loved. He and his wife, Jo, gave willingly of their time and resources and their philanthropy and numerous other contributions will be felt for years to come.”

2014 Signature Events A SEASONAL CELEBRATION Chaired by John and Ellen Middleton, the 2014 Festival of Trees was a record-breaking year. With the move to the Tulalip Resort, the event grew to welcome more than 4,000 guests over the weeklong celebration. Grossing more than $735,000 for Children’s Services at Providence, Festival of Trees was a great success thanks to the tremendous efforts of the event committee, volunteers, sponsors and tree designers.

Over 28 tree designers decorated gorgeous trees and wreaths in a variety of themes from Charlie Brown to the Polar Express—contributing to a winter wonder-

12

land. A sincere thank you to the Middleton Family for their work in creating such a successful event. We’d also like to thank our Title Sponsor— Tulalip Tribes and Platinum Sponsors—K&H Integrated Print Solutions, Premera Blue Cross and Radia Inc. AN EQUESTRIAN EPICUREAN AFFAIR Thanks to our gracious hosts of 28 years, Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant, and our wonderful Chairs, Dr. Pat and Denise Ryan, the Kentucky Derby themed event was a record-breaking night and raised a total of $137,000. The funds raised went to support a new cardiothoracic Patient Transition Coordinator position, a pilot program geared at improving the patient experience and providing seamless and exceptional care for cardiothoracic surgery patients. It was a festive event in true Kentucky Derby fashion with ladies sporting their fancy derby hats and men in their bow ties. In addition to the attire and record-breaking

funds, a big highlight of the evening was honoring the recently retired Bob Drewel with the third-annual Budd Gould Award for his many years of service to both the community and to Providence. A sincere thank you to Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant, Dr. Pat and Denise Ryan and to our Presenting Sponsor, Performance Home Medical. We’d also like to thank Premera, The Everett Clinic, Providence Medical Group, Western Washington Medical Group, Radia, Puget Sound Kidney Centers, and Specialty Care for their generous underwriting support for the event.

Events that Enhance Our Mission Providence General Foundation would like to thank all the individuals and organizations who help further the mission of Providence through third-party fundraisers. In 2014, $118,250 was raised and invested into funds that assist cancer patients encountering financial challenges or to provide mammogram screenings and services to those in need. ANNUAL WOMEN’S GOLF OUTING The Everett Golf & Country Club Women’s Division hosted the 37th annual Golf Tournament in May. The women enjoyed a wonderful day of golf, lunch and live and silent auctions while raising over $20,000 for the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. RUN OF THE MILL 5K ROAD RACE The Columbia Funding Mortgage’s annual Run of the Mill 5k gathers thousands of runners and walkers for the big race each summer in the Mill Creek Town Center. Columbia Funding Mortgage allocated $7,000 of the proceeds from the race to the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund at Providence. 14

AN EVENING UNDER THE STARS Dr. Oliver Batson, a Medical Oncologist with the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership, and his wife Julie hosted a reception in late August in support of the Providence Cancer Patient Navigator program—a special program that helps patients and families with cancer navigate through the process of diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.

SILVERTIPS PINK THE RINK Each year, funds from the annual Everett Silvertips Pink the Rink hockey event support the free mammogram program and related services, for women without insurance. In 2014, the event brought in over $86,000 including a generous donation of $50,000 from The Safeway Foundation—the premier sponsor for the annual fundraiser.

Guests enjoyed gourmet appetizers and fine wines on the lovely outdoor courtyard of the Batson’s home and generously donated $7,250 to the program.

WHEELS ON THE WATERFRONT Last September marked the third annual Wheels on the Waterfront Classic Charity Car Show at the Port of Everett Marina. The 2014 charity car show raised $9,000 for the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund and featured 325 classic cars with over 3,500 guests in attendance.
