dear friends Providence General Foundation Mission
Jean Messner 2015 Chairman, Board of Directors Providence General Foundation
Providence General Foundation cultivates the charitable spirit of the community by raising and distributing funds to promote health and wellness primarily through the programs and services of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Our fundraising efforts are guided by our core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship.
Thank you for your extraordinary support of Providence. Your generosity has enabled us to thrive as we continue to serve our growing community with new programs and services. In 2015, Providence General Foundation continued the campaign for Providence Autism Center. The initial fundraising goal for the Autism Center, which will support the center’s operational needs for the next five years, is $1.5 million of which almost half a million dollars was raised in 2015. At the 30th annual Festival of Trees, you broke records by raising nearly $820,000 to support the Providence Children’s Center. This includes more than $300,000 raised through the fund-a-need campaign to cover the Center’s outdoor playground and therapy area, so children can use the space year-round. Working on skills outside of the classroom is essential for a child’s development, and the new covering will help these kids thrive and mature. An innovative, common-sense partnership with the Everett Gospel Mission is providing

a safe, warm place for homeless people who need bed rest after emergency room discharge. We only scratched the surface of this need in 2015; the effort has so much room to grow in coming years. (Read more inside.) It’s important to take a moment to look back. Patient volumes at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett were consistently high in 2015. Funding and building the Cymbaluk Medical Tower was an enormous undertaking, but it was the right priority at the right time. We need the tower to care for this growing community. In this report, we honor the Bjorg family. For years, they have set an example in our community for their commitment and generosity. Gordy Bjorg Sr. passed away in July 2015. His presence—and his passion—are profoundly missed, but his legacy lives on. (Read more about the Bjorg family inside.) At Providence, caring for the vulnerable is not just part of our Mission. We act. And in 2015, donors once again proved with their own unfailing actions how deeply they care about this growing community. We thank you sincerely for your partnership and generosity.

When rest is the cure Ruth saw patients discharged from the ED with a prescription for “medical rest” and knew time off the streets could make all the difference. She met with leaders at Everett Gospel Mission, and soon a new program was born. Four beds for women and four beds for men are set aside in a special area at the Mission. Patients discharged with a condition that can be relieved with rest, and who can walk and take care of themselves, are referred there to recuperate. Sylvia Anderson, the Everett Union Gospel Mission’s CEO, says that in addition to helping with short-term recovery needs, the program offers an introduction for peoProvidence Regional Medical Center Emergency Department

an opportunity to heal, to make connections with social agencies and housing, to get cleaned up enough to apply for jobs, and to engage in a community far more healthy and safe than the streets.” Providence donors gifted $20,000 to help fund this partnership. Providence and the Mission each fund four of the beds. Each day of bed rest costs about $12.50 per person for linens and meals. Sylvia says she and her team are appreciative of donor support for this innovative program. “My goal is to be able to say that every person without a home, and willing to go to the Mission, has a bed. That we never, ever turn away a willing person out of the ED and into the street.”

among its specialties. Neuroscience specialists are concerned with the functioning of the nervous system. At Providence, highly skilled physicians, nurses and support staff work within three advanced neurosciences treatment services: the Cranial Clinic, Spine Center and Stroke Center. These teams treat conditions ranging from Alzheimer's disease, to brain tumors, epilepsy, movement disorders, nerve and muscle disorders, stroke, and many more. Dr. Martin C. Holland joined the program in July 2015 to serve as Chief of Neurosurgery and the Neurosciences Program in Everett. Dr. Holland is a board certified neurosurgeon with special interests in stroke, brain and spinal tumors, neurotrauma, neurocritical care and spinal disease. Getting from here to there Since Dr. Holland’s arrival, the neurosciences program has increased in volume—and complexity. “We were doing 70 cases a month last summer; now we average about 115 cases a month,” Dr. Holland says. At the program’s foundation is a wellestablished multidisciplinary model, which calls on experts from various medical disciplines to work together for the best treatment for each patient. Dr. Holland points to muscular and spinal pain treatment as an example. “Surgery is no longer the go-to solution, and this is where multi-disciplinary care comes in. The majority of patients should start with medication, physical therapy, weight loss and perhaps injections; if a problem persists, a surgical evaluation is the next step. Our team determines the next, best step for each patient.

the bjorg family legacy Our community is fortunate to be blessed with so many generous and devoted families. And the Bjorg family is no exception. Carol and Gordy have been a strong example of kindness, generosity and dedication to Snohomish County for decades and many have felt their impact: local youth sports teams and schools, the Tulalip Boys and Girls club, and the Marysville Rotary, where Gordy served as president of the board. Providence— and those we serve—are fortunate to have benefited from their generous spirit. Together, Carol and Gordy touched countless lives with their compassionate spirit—leaving an incredible legacy of generosity, volunteering, leadership and dedication to family and community. Role models and mentors Gordy Jr. says he remembers what his parents’ community involvement meant to them while he was growing up. “Providence was near and dear to my dad’s heart.” He explained, “My parents instilled faith in putting others first. That’s how they lived their life. My father was very inspirational to me; he was a mentor and a teacher.” Carol says the family’s support of Providence came naturally. “As the kids grew up, we had many doctors and their families in our circle of friends,” she says. “We learned about things we could do to help. They raised daughter Shana and son Gordy Jr. and enjoyed living and working in Snohomish County. And, they have given back—through decades of generosity to organizations they believed in like Providence. Together, Carol and Gordy have donated nearly $700,000 in support of the work and mission of Providence Regional Medical Center. They supported the building of the new Medical Tower, as well as Children’s Services and Heart and Vascular Services. They have also given their time. Donna has served on the Festival of Trees committee and they are dedicated supporters of Children’s Services at Providence. Shana keeps her father’s legacy alive in Arizona where she supports local causes Gordy was passionate about such as the Lake Havasu City Rotary, the Arizona Balloon Classic and the Humane Society.
