Dear Friends:

Our commitment to caring for those with the greatest need is rooted in an amazing legacy that began in Northwest Washington in 1905. For more than a century in this community, Providence has never wavered in our Mission to serve all who need our care—especially the poor and vulnerable. And along the way, our donors have brought extraordinary support to our Mission. The year 2016 was no exception.

Last year, in keeping with an established trend, our community experienced rapid growth. As we greeted new neighbors, our hospital and clinics welcomed many more patients than ever before. We stretched to meet higher volumes and to care for more—and more critical—trauma patients who seek our help at the most vulnerable time in their lives.

When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind. — UNK N O W N

In 2016, we opened a new operating room—funded 100 percent by donors. This is the first of five new operating rooms that will be built over the next few years on our surgical floors. These will provide significantly greater surgical capacity for Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and will enable key service lines, including Heart & Vascular, Neurosurgery and Trauma to expand and deliver a wider range of leading-edge care. In addition, the medical center plans to upgrade several cardiac catheterization labs—further expanding the function and capability of the Heart & Vascular program—and will add 64 new inpatient beds by building out the ninth floor of the Cymbaluk Medical Tower. At the end of the year, the 31st annual Festival of Trees broke all records, raising more than $1 million for Children’s Services. We were amazed and humbled by our donors’ extraordinary kindness and generosity. Please take a look at the following story in this report that features the donors whose fund-a-need contributions for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit set the tone for this incredible night. Another highlight from 2016: We marked the 20-year anniversary of Camp Prov. What started as a humble day camp in a staff member’s backyard has become a life-changing program for children with special needs and their siblings. Without the donations that fund this camp, most of the 400 families we served in 2016 could not have afforded to attend.

Our roots in this community are deep, and so we do not fear the challenges that lie before us. We thank you for sharing our unwavering commitment to the people who most need our care and advocacy.

Providence General Foundation Mission Providence General Foundation cultivates the charitable spirit of the community by raising and distributing funds to promote health and wellness primarily through the programs and services of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Our fundraising efforts are guided by our core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship.

Providence Mission As people of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service. Larry Jubie Chairman, Board of Directors

Million Dollar Night When guests gathered for the 2016 Festival of Trees Gala, none could have imagined the magic awaiting them. The trees, the food, the jubilant atmosphere—it seemed perfect. But what stole the show was the spirit of giving. The evening featured a video about Lucy and Liam, twins born 11 weeks early at the Pavilion for Women and Children. Through the heartfelt words of their parents, guests heard their story and learned about their care in Giraffe OmniBed Carestations in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

A “Giraffe Bed” combines an incubator, radiant warmer, and humidifier to mimic conditions in a mother’s womb. It provides a healing environment for “micro preemies,” babies born before 26 weeks gestation or who weigh less than 1.5 pounds at birth.

The Providence NICU had three Giraffe Beds at the time, but need for the special equipment sometimes exceeded capacity. So the call went out to the crowd during Fund-A-Need to support the purchase of at least seven new Giraffe Beds. What happened next was phenomenal. Four families—Kleins, Bjorgs, Rodlands and Cronins—raised their paddles to each purchase the equivalent of one Giraffe Bed for the Providence NICU. In addition, an amazing challenge by Jay and Terry Ackley of K&H Integrated Print Solutions was sent out to the rest of the crowd to inspire others to give abundantly—and that is exactly what happened. For the first time in its 31 year history, the Festival of Trees reached the $1 million mark in support—with the Ackley family donating enough to fund an additional three Giraffe beds.

All in all, the 2016 Festival of Trees ended up being an unforgettable start to the holiday season. A sincere thank you to Festival Co-Chairs Jeff and Jodie Cymbaluk and Gordy Jr. and Donna Bjorg, Title Sponsor Tulalip Tribes, and all of the amazing donors, sponsors, tree designers and volunteers who made the 2016 Festival of Trees a record-breaking, unforgettable event. On the following pages we invite you to meet some of the extraordinary 2016 Festival of Trees families and join us in honoring them for their outstanding leadership and generosity.

The True Spirit of Festival J AY & T E R RY A C K L E Y Jay and Terry Ackley and K&H Integrated Print Solutions were honored this past year with Providence’s first-ever Spirit of Festival Award at the 2016 Festival of Trees Gala. This accolade recognizes the Ackley’s continued, extraordinary support of Providence, and their investments of time, treasure, and talent to help Festival of Trees become the successful and regional event it is today. Jay is owner and CEO of K&H Integrated Print Solutions, a printing company founded in Everett in 1908. For more than a decade, K&H has generously provided printed materials for Festival of Trees. And, year after year, the Ackleys inspire others by raising their own paddle high to give of themselves in support of children in our area. Over the years, the Ackleys and the K&H team have provided more than $500,000 in support of Providence in this region. Because of their remarkable generosity, the healthcare needs of countless children are being met in our community. “This is quite an honor,” Jay said, in accepting the award. “Like Providence, K&H is a long-term member of our shared community. Tonight, and into the future, we’d like you to think about the magnificent regional resource Providence has become during its 100-plus-year history. It’s the center of a great community.”

“We are blessed,” Jay additionally told the crowd. “There are others who aren’t as lucky as we are. So, like the theme of this year’s Festival, we urge you to ‘Believe’ in abundance. Live in abundance. Give in abundance.” And that is exactly what Jay and Terry did that evening. They not only set the pace with their own paddle, they announced a challenge during Fund-a-Need that sparked a spirit of abundance and generosity that spread through the crowd. So that night, the Ackleys not only gave in abundance, but inspired it as well. Thank you, Jay and Terry Ackley. Your contributions, leadership and enthusiasm for Providence and children in our community have made a huge difference in the lives of so many.

The Joy of Giving

A Tradition of Generosity

T HE K LEIN FAMILY Steve and Carol Klein love Festival of Trees. “The cause,” Carol said. “The people. It’s such a joyous event.” They would know. They’ve been attending together for more than 20 years. And Steve was on the planning committee for the first-ever Festival at Forest Park.

T H E B J O R G FA M I LY At the 2016 Gala, the story of twins Lucy and Liam touched their hearts. Like the Cronins, the Kleins know about having a newborn in the NICU. Six years ago, Carol’s goddaughter gave birth to a boy who weighed little more than a pound. He spent 7 months receiving specialized care—including in the nurturing environment of a Giraffe Bed.

For Carol Bjorg and family, supporting Providence is a tradition. “The community has been good to us,” Carol said. “We want to give back.”

in the early years with Foundation events, served on the board, and has designed trees and unique blown-glass wreaths for Festival of Trees.

Their community ties are strong. Carol’s late husband, Gordon Sr.,

Gordon Sr. was a big fan of Festival of Trees. “He wasn’t bashful,” Carol said. “Whether it was a sales meeting or a fundraiser, he was a one-man pep rally.”

When the opportunity to provide additional Giraffe Beds for the Providence NICU was presented, Steve and Carol were reminded of how blessed they are to have their three children and eight grandchildren living within a few miles of them. They thought of how difficult it must be for new parents with a baby in the NICU—especially when the hospital is far from home.

The family’s connection to Providence goes way back, as well. Carol, a retired speech therapist and school administrator, worked for Providence during summers to provide students with year-round services. And in 1997 Steve’s parents, Bill and Dee, helped fund the Pediatric Interim Care endowment at Providence, providing critical therapeutic intervention for children who are born with exposure to drugs and/or alcohol. More recently, Steve and Carol serve as chairs of the Friends of Providence donor society.

6

The couple’s enthusiasm for Providence has had a trickle-down effect. Their son Gordy and his wife Donna are also active supporters. Donna volunteered alongside Carol at the holiday tea, chaired the Teddy Bear Breakfast and has expressed her creativity designing several trees. Donna and Gordy were also the Co-Chairs of this 2016 Festival of Trees, and watched closely as the spirit of giving overtook the room. But they didn’t just sit back and watch. The entire Bjorg family quickly raised their paddle to donate a Giraffe Bed, too.

“Families need care close to home,” Carol said. “They need to spend as much time as possible helping their children grow and thrive.” The Kleins didn’t think twice about supporting specialized care in their community.

“Additional Giraffe Beds in the Providence NICU will make an immediate impact on community health,” Donna said. “We couldn’t be more pleased to support that important mission.” joined Roy Robinson Chevrolet in 1970. He and the dealership’s namesake became fast friends and, later, business partners. Carol and Gordon raised their family here: daughter Shana and son Gordy Jr. are Everett High grads. Shana and her husband Dan run a family business in Arizona, while Gordy and his wife Donna are actively involved in running the dealership.

They were thrilled to see the interest swell that night. “We were ecstatic,” Steve said. “There was such energy in the room as people raised their paddles.” “The stories of real people are powerful,” Carol said. “You can’t help but get caught up in the emotion. There’s so much joy in seeing people give.”

The family’s ties to Providence are strong, as well. Carol was involved

“Helping kids and families,” Gordy said, “that’s what it’s all about. It truly has become a Bjorg family tradition. I know my dad would be proud.”

Giving from the Heart

Inspired to Give

T HE RO DLAND FAMILY

T H E C R O N I N FA M I LY

“You never know what’s going to touch you,” said Gala emcee Buzz Rodland. Like the other families, Buzz and Carol Rodland were moved by the story of Lucy and Liam at the 2016 Festival of Trees. So moved that they, too, raised their paddle for a Giraffe Bed.

“We’re Everett natives,” Buzz said. “We’ve watched our hometown grow from a small town to a bustling city. But, despite all that, Everett hasn’t changed: it still has a small-town feel— and a huge heart.”

It was Roxi Cronin’s first Festival of Trees Gala. But she’s not new to Providence. She managed and was buyer for the hospital gift shop for nine years and spent 18 years volunteering there. She also served on the steering committee for the cancer center campaign and as president of the Children’s Association.

The Rodlands believe donating a Giraffe Bed to the Providence NICU presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help children and families in their community. And they were all in.

“It wasn’t a decision,” Roxi said. “It was automatic. I often think of the verse: ‘For of those to whom much is given, much is required.’ I only wish Bert could have been there.

Attending the Gala wasn’t easy. It was Roxi’s first event without the love of her life, Bert, who’s in declining health. She and Bert are Everett natives: Roxi graduated from Cascade and Bert graduated from Everett High. Their three children were born at Everett General and attended local schools, as well.

There was a reason Lucy and Liam’s story touched them. They know how it feels to love a newborn needing extra care. Their granddaughter, Riley, was born with a rare condition and needed skull surgery when she was only months old. Plus, the newborn daughter of a family friend spent 90 days in the NICU—including a period in a Giraffe Bed—after weighing just 23 ounces at birth.

At the Gala, when the video about Lucy and Liam rolled, it became clear: Roxi was meant to be there.

The Rodlands were honored to help expand the services offered at their hometown hospital. “When someone you love needs specialized care,” Carol said, “25 miles makes a big difference. We’re pleased families don’t have to travel to the ‘big city’ to receive the best possible care.”

Roxi and Bert’s first grandchild, Kylie, was born 12 weeks early and spent 66 days in the NICU—including time in a Giraffe Bed. The Cronins understand the value of a state-of-the-art NICU to the wellbeing of our community.

2016 Epicurean Affair Thanks to our fine hosts at Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant, and our fantastic event chairs, Ken and Sharon Clay, the 2016 Annual Epicurean Affair was truly an evening to remember.

Once again, it was a sold out crowd. The nautical theme was selected this year, inspired by the incredible views from the marina. Guests dressed in festive nautical attire and dined on the finest Northwest cuisine, paired with exceptional local wines, all served by Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant. The generosity of the evening was incredible, raising a record $190,000 to support Providence Boyden Family Autism Center. This funding will help provide continued treatment and services for hundreds of young children with autism here in our community.

10

Another highlight of the evening was honoring Richard and Judy Boyden with the 6th Annual Budd Gould Tribute Award, for their extraordinary support and impact both at Providence and here in Snohomish County. This support includes a recent $750,000 gift to support the operations of the Providence Boyden Family Autism Center, and to help ease the way of families in our community living with autism. They have also made provisions in their estate plan to help support the center in the future. Providence General Foundation would like to thank the Boydens, Anthony’s HomePort, chairs Ken and Sharon Clay and our sponsors including Performance Home Medical (Premier Sponsor), and all of our wonderful guests at the 2016 Epicurean Affair for helping Providence continue to provide the most comprehensive autism services to children and families here in Northwest Washington.

Seasoned leaders, growing roles In July 2016, Providence Health & Services and St. Joseph Health officially came together to form a new, dynamic partnership—Providence St. Joseph Health. The partnership created new regional markets throughout the new and expanding health system. With these changes came the need for our seasoned leaders to grow into new positions to guide our organization’s innovation and population health strategies now and in the years ahead.

Leading the way P R E S TO N S I M M O N S had been serving as Chief Executive Officer for the Northwest Washington Region and has since transitioned to a new role within the system—leaving behind a legacy of strong leadership and innovation. KI M W I LLI A M S , formerly Chief Operating Officer in Northwest Washington, recently became our region’s Chief Executive. She now oversees all operations in the Snohomish County region, including Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and Providence Medical Group. Preston says he is grateful for the leadership in place and optimistic for new opportunities in the market. “Kim is an awesome leader,” Preston says. “She and I have worked as close partners for 11 years and she has been a critical part of the region’s success.” Preston notes that the Everett administrative team overall is one of the health system’s highest performing, as shown by its record of value and quality outcomes.

Kim’s priorities include continued growth in the clinical specialties for which people have traditionally sought treatment outside Snohomish County, such as heart and vascular, neurosciences and trauma. “We’re focused on continuing to expand services to meet the needs of a community that is asking for more access,” Kim says. Kim and Preston both express their gratitude for community support—past, present and future. “We’re growing fast to meet the needs of the community,” Kim says. “It’s work we cannot do without continued involvement from others who are invested in our mission.”

When the Cymbaluk Medical Tower opened in 2011, it expanded Providence Regional Medical Center Everett’s capacity and services to help meet the growing needs of the community. The ensuing years have seen tremendous growth in the number of patients served, as more patients are choosing Providence Regional Medical Center Everett for award winning, world-class specialty care. In fact, since the Tower opening, the volume of surgeries performed has increased an average of six percent per year—while caseloads at most other local area hospitals have remained flat. According to Dr. James Cook, Chief Medical Officer and former Chief of Surgery, this growth is expected to continue.

Funding Surgical Services to Care for Community Needs

“Quality surgeons are drawn to Providence Everett,” he said. “They see the community and the hospital are invested in the success of the program. They want to be part of that success. Our existing providers are experiencing tremendous growth in their practices, as well.” Because of this increased volume, Dr. Cook and hospital staff work diligently to utilize the operating rooms at peak efficiency. However, when patient needs exceed the capacity, it’s a challenge. Fortunately, space on the Tower’s two surgical floors was set aside for future growth. There’s a clear need to begin building out those spaces now. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors during the Medical Tower Capital Campaign, Providence General Foundation was able to provide the funding needed to build a tenth operating room in 2016. This is the first of five new operating rooms that are planned over the next several years.

12

“The added operating rooms will provide significantly more capacity,” Dr. Cook said, “and allow specialties, such as Heart and Vascular, Neurosurgery and Trauma, to meet the needs of the community by offering an even wider range of leadingedge care.” And in Heart and Vascular services, the need is great. In Snohomish County alone, 30,000 people are living with diagnosed heart disease. As the population ages, this number will surely increase. At Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, surgeons perform minimally invasive cardiac catheterization procedures (more than 1,100 last year), as well as other advanced interventions like TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement), coronary artery bypass surgery, and aneurysm repairs. Adding operating room capacity means more of our friends and neighbors will benefit from these life-changing interventions.

“We are thankful,” said Dr. Cook, “for the consistent and robust support of generous donors who believe and invest in us. Thanks to their support, we are blessed with first-rate, state-of-the-art facilities, equipment, and staff to support our mission of providing patients with increased access to advanced specialized care—close to home— now and in the future.”

B I L L R U C K ER is a proud Everett native. He graduated from Everett High, played basketball at the University of Washington, and graduated from Law School. After that, he spent a few years in the courtroom, then changed direction and went into business running H&L Sports and Soccer West. He also found time to coach both little league and Boys & Girls Club sports for 20 years, serve on the boards of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett (PRMCE) and EverTrust Bank, and also serve as Everett city councilman and president. How did he do it? “I enjoy being physically active,” he said. “I work out at the YMCA at least three times a week and ride bikes with a group of guys whose average age is 80.”

When asked about his experience, Bill quickly replied, “Truthfully, I was never worried. I had great confidence in the team at Providence. I went in at 7:30 a.m. and took a nap, and at 3:30 p.m., I woke up feeling great!” Of course, that’s a simplified version of events. But, before long, Bill and his “much improved heart,” as he calls it, were back at full strength—working out at the YMCA and singing the praises of his hometown hospital.

Bill and his wife, Janice, admit that the value of having access to world-class medical expertise becomes more relevant as one gets older. “There’s nothing more important than excellent health care,” Janice said. “And we have

Heartfelt Gratitude for Expert Care Close to Home In other words, he takes good care of himself. But when a broken rib sent him to the Emergency Department at PRMCE, doctors had a surprise for him. They’d discovered an arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat. Additional tests revealed Bill had four blocked arteries and needed coronary bypass surgery. “I was feeling fine, aside from the broken rib,” Bill said. “I had no symptoms or warning signs. No heart attack. Just a lucky discovery by the cardiac team at Providence.”

14

that in Providence. We’re blessed with a first-rate hospital and a first-rate cardiac program—one of the best in the nation.”

Ever the businessman, Bill reflects fondly, yet pragmatically, on his desire to support Providence. “There are endless worthy causes,” he said. “But there’s no better organization than Providence. Any dollar you give to the hospital is a great investment in the health of the community at large. I’m proud and glad that my wife and I have been able to contribute, in our modest way, to various Providence building campaigns. It turned out to be a very beneficial investment.”

Alex: a camper’s story Alex Froehlich, who has Down syndrome, was four when he attended Camp Prov for the first time. Alex’s buddy was Tom Gebert, a pre-med student at University of Washington. According to Mary, Alex’s mom, “Tom had his work cut out for him,” as Alex’s vocabulary consisted of “yes” and “no.” He communicated mainly through nonspecific sounds and pointing. On the first day, Mary watched from her car as the campers and buddies got busy having fun. She’d prepared to stay for the entire session, but soon realized Alex and the others were in capable hands.

Camp Prov

While Mom went about her day, the campers danced, took nature walks, and floated in the pool. Tom even convinced Alex—who’s afraid of animals—to pet a goat at the petting zoo.

20 years of magic and life-changing experiences It’s 1996. You have a child with special needs. The end of the school year is approaching and your options for summer activities are practically non-existent. What do you do? “Parents couldn’t just call a babysitter or drop their child off at a day camp,” said Jim Phillips, Providence Children’s Services manager. “They needed programs to accommodate their children’s complex needs.” To help meet that need, Providence Children’s Center and Providence General Children’s Association worked together to develop a day camp for local kids with special needs and their siblings. At first, it took place in a staff member’s backyard with only a handful of kids. As demand grew, the camp moved to Forest Park in Everett, and Camp Prov was born.

16

This year, as Camp Prov enters its third decade, nearly 400 kids will attend the weeklong sessions during the five week camp season. However, this camp provides much more than the standard swimming, crafts, and songs. It’s fair to say: Camp Prov changes lives. Campers range in age from 18 months to ten years, with disabilities including autism, traumatic brain injury, and sensory disorders. They’re matched with a one-on-one counselor—or “buddy”— based on information gathered during registration. It’s with those buddies that the magic happens.

The magic goes both ways. Some buddies initially volunteer to complete service hours. But, many end up volunteering at Camp Prov year after year. Some are so moved by the experience, they choose careers working with children with special needs. So, while the buddies are enriching the campers’ lives, the campers are changing theirs.

It isn’t just about play Much has changed since Camp Prov was founded 20 years ago. It has evolved into a source of learning and development for the campers. Last year, unit leaders— buddies who’ve graduated to supervisory roles—created a program about nutrition. They made it hands-on at snack time. Staff members provided an “example”— perhaps a happy face rice cake with cream cheese, a carrot mouth, and raisin eyes.

They were learning to make good food choices, plus practicing motor skills and independence. Jim encourages unit leaders to bring forward new thoughts and ideas, for he knows the program will evolve through their initiative. “We’re seeing more children with autism,” he said. “As counselors enter college and study autism, I anticipate they’ll come back as unit leaders and incorporate autism services into camp curriculum. I can hardly wait.”

Community support for families Camp Prov provides incredible support for special needs children and their families, but this support would not be possible without the generosity of the community. “Camp Prov relies on donations to Providence General Foundation and Providence General Children’s Association to help keep it going,” Phillips said.

When asked about the future of Camp Prov, Phillips shared, “Demand for this service will continue to increase. But, with continued donor support, I am confident that Camp Prov will remain a fixture in our community for years to come.” 17
