innovation through generosity 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends:

This past year, Providence Regional Medical Center Everett benefited greatly from the generosity of you, our donors. Your gifts brought to life

new innovative procedures, expanded existing programs and services, and created advanced educational opportunities for our clinical teams.

Learning and innovation go hand in hand. The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow.

With your support, the purchase of video mediastinoscopy—a piece of equipment used by thoracic surgeons to biopsy tissue for diagnosing lung cancer—was made possible. Your generosity has also benefited the expansion of the Trauma Program through new advanced equipment and training. Philanthropy made possible a new state-of-the-art surgical suite in the Cymbaluk Medical Tower as well. All critical investments in better health care for our region. In addition to investing record funding back into much-needed programs at Providence, new milestones were also achieved. Festival of Trees topped the charts again—raising more than $1.2 million for Children Services. Providence received a transformational gift from Clyde & Judy Pitcher which will be used to boost clinical resources that will better serve our growing

community. We also recorded $4.4 million in bequest intentions, making 2017 one of our most successful years to date. This past year was also a year of great growth and innovation for our Heart Program, where the 100th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure was completed and the first micro pacemaker procedure was performed. Both are examples of new, state-of-the-art procedures available to our growing community. We invite you to read more in the following pages about generosity, innovation and a commitment to excellence in health care. We included several inspiring stories to illustrate how

Gratitude Inspires Generosity T. Clyde & Judy Pitcher are grateful for exceptional care close to home Everett natives Clyde and Judy Pitcher have watched their hometown grow and change. They recall when downtown featured dime stores and paper mills. They remember walking to class at Everett High before school buses were the norm.

children—three daughters and a son—and when Clyde’s military service was over, they moved their growing family home to Everett. Clyde planned to attend law school. But a change in his dad’s health led him to join the family business, Clark Distributing, instead. Clyde was soon running the company, which grew from four employees when he started, to 80 when he retired. “I worked hard, grew the business, and it was successful.” Clyde said “We were very fortunate.” Back then, the Pitchers didn’t spend much time thinking about medical care. They focused on business and family life, and giving back to their community.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe today’s Everett—with jumbo jets, a bustling port, record-breaking population growth and traffic congestion—is the same little town they knew as kids. Clyde and Judy met in high school and graduated from the University of Washington. Clyde earned a degree in business, while Judy studied education. After college, they married and Clyde joined the Air Force. He flew cargo planes to Hawaii and Japan, while Judy taught elementary school. They had four

4

Clyde served on the Providence Hospital and Foundation Boards, and Judy was active in the Providence Children’s Association, along with PTA and Camp Fire activities, and teaching Sunday school. Their very first gift of support to Providence was in 1975 which is a testament to their generous spirit and heart for quality health care for their community.

A new season— for the Pitcher’s and for Providence Today, the Pitchers’ life continues to change. Clyde and Judy are now in their 80s. They’re retired and cherish their ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. As they’ve entered their golden years, they now spend more time thinking about their health. And they’ve come to know Providence in an entirely new way: as patients.

In the past two years, Clyde & Judy together have experienced care in a variety of departments at Providence—including orthopedic, neurology, trauma, hematology and cardiology. In fact, Clyde was one of the first patients to have the new transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) heart procedure at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. “In this season of life,” Judy said, “we appreciate having world-class medical care close to home—not just hospital beds, but whatever services we need. Providence has it all under one roof and the care is excellent.” And it was this sense of gratitude that inspired Clyde and Judy to make a transformational gift of support to Providence this past December to help create a greater Providence for our expanding region. “Providence has a solid plan for growing with—and for—the people of Western Washington through innovation, stateof-the-art technology, and top-notch staff” said Clyde. “It’s important for us to support that…not to mention they make delicious meatloaf.”

Yes. You read correctly. During an inpatient stay at Providence, Clyde raved about the meatloaf. The chef was so tickled, Food and Nutrition Services gave Judy the recipe. The Pitchers were touched by the personal attention they received from the staff.

“In this season of life, we appreciate having world-class medical care close to home. It’s important for us to support that, not to mention they make delicious meatloaf.” But Clyde is all seriousness when he talks about the value of Providence to his family and hometown. “Our area is growing. More people means a greater need for greater health care here in Snohomish County. It’s not feasible— nor necessary—to travel to Seattle for top-quality care. Providence is right here.”

Another Grateful Heart on Track to a Full Recovery At first, Marc Marion thought he was just out of shape. The active 66-year-old teacher from Mount Vernon was on a walk with his wife and daughter, when he felt breathless. He was recovering from a hamstring injury, so he figured he needed more conditioning to feel right again. But when breathlessness turned to chest pain, Marc feared he was having a heart attack. He saw his family doctor, who sent him to a local cardiologist for testing.

An avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, Marc was motivated to regain his active lifestyle. He walked. And walked. And walked some more. By his three-week check-up, he was walking 105 minutes a day. Dr. Brevig was pleased, and Marc’s recovery continued to progress. He was back teaching in just six weeks. “My experience at Providence was nothing but positive,” Marc said. “Still, I hope I don’t need to come back. But if I do, I know I’ll be in the best hands.”

“I flunked the treadmill test,” he said. “That was a big sign.” Marc had a congenital heart defect—and needed a valve replacement.

Choosing the best Heart Program Living 45 miles north of Everett, Marc had to choose where he wanted to undergo his valve replacement procedure—North or South. He talked with family, did research and for him the clear choice was Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Friends agreed they wouldn’t go anywhere else. Teaching at Northshore Christian Academy in Everett for the past 18 years and with his wife Lynda’s family in the area, it made the decision that much easier. Marc was referred to James Brevig, MD, a Providence Cardiac Surgeon. He said Marc was young and in generally good health, which qualified him for traditional, open-heart surgery to replace his malfunctioning valve. Marc had the procedure in February 2018 and spent five days at Providence recovering.

Keeping Pace with Innovation Providence’s heart program doesn’t miss a beat! Recent innovation is changing the way Providence cares for patients with cardiovascular disease. In the past, surgical interventions for heart problems often involved open heart surgery. But for some patients, this invasive approach can be too risky because of their age or health condition. New catheter-based interventions are often a good solution for these patients. Instead of Mahesh Mulumudi, MD; James Brevig, MD making a large incision and and Maheer Gandhavadi, MD opening the patient’s chest, surgeons use a small incision and guide a catheter from the groin to the became the first to receive the new device which heart. “We plant seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capabilities.” — Excerpt from “A Future Not Our Own,” by Archbishop Oscar Romero

For Margaret and Bob Bavasi, the words of the poem by Archbishop Oscar Romero reflect how they live their life—planting seeds and laying the foundation for those who will follow. In his youth, Bob spent much of his time learning the innerworkings of professional sports. His dad, “Buzzie,” was a long-time Major League Baseball executive—leading teams like the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres, and the California Angels. Margaret’s father was a physician in Columbia, Missouri. Providing her with an insider’s view to her hometown hospital. “My parents had such a connection to our local hospital,” Margaret said, “it came to feel like part of our family.”

8

The Bavasis met as law students, and after a few years of practicing in San Diego, felt called to a bigger adventure. In an “inspired moment,” as Margaret calls it, they bought a minor league baseball team that brought them to Everett.

Like Margaret’s childhood hospital, Providence Regional has become part of her new family. And that is why they have included the hospital in their estate planning. The Bavasi’s provision for Providence in their will reminds Margaret of one of her favorite poems—A Future Not Our Own: we are temporary caretakers, nurturing seeds planted by those who came before us and planting our own seeds to benefit the generations to come. “We believe Everett and Providence a hundred years from now is no less deserving of our attention and care than the Everett of today,” said Bob. “And since we have clear ideas as to how we’d like our estate distributed, we put those ideas in writing.” “It’s given us a sense of peace,” Margaret added, “to have dealt with that part of life. And we’re happy we could plant a seed now for a cause we hold most dear.”

Providence Legacy Society Charter Members The Providence Legacy Society was launched in 2017 as a way for the Providence General Foundation to recognize and thank donors who have made provisions for Providence in their estate plans. The society allows us to celebrate and honor valued supporters today for a gift that is postponed until after their lifetimes.

Bavasis Plant Seeds for the Future

After a few years at the helm of the Everett Giants (now the AquaSox), the Bavasis started a family of their own. Their daughters, Haley and Emily, were born at Everett General. That was the family’s first connection to their hometown hospital. Since then, Margaret and Bob have chaired Festival of Trees, Margaret has served Providence on numerous boards and committees—including nine years on the hospital board and as a current member of the Foundation board—and daughter Emily now works as a nurse in the Emergency Department at Providence Regional Medical Center.

Lung Cancer Patients Benefit from Robotic Procedure More American men and women die from lung cancer than from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. But, thanks to the generosity of Providence General Foundation donors, Thoracic Surgeons Kimberly Costas, MD, and Luis Alberton, MD, are using state-of-the-art technology to help reverse that trend for many patients they treat.

Most lung cancer cases are detected after a patient develops symptoms. By then, the disease is often advanced and has spread to other areas of the body. Several years ago, Providence Regional Cancer Partnership launched a robust screening program to detect lung cancer early—when it’s most treatable and offers the greatest chance for cure.

“Robotic surgery, itself, isn’t new,” Dr. Costas said, “it’s been used for years by surgeons in gynecology, urology, and general surgery. But, using robotics for thoracic surgery is new. Less than 5% of thoracic procedures are performed robotically—and that number will continue to grow as surgeons are trained and the advantages become more clear.”

The program involves a low-dose CT scan instead of the traditional chest x-ray. The CT scan provides images from various angles inside the body—with far more detail than is possible with an x-ray.

Robotic surgery is minimally invasive, so patients recover faster than from traditional “open chest” procedures. Plus, they spend less time in the hospital and have a reduced chance of post-operative complications.

“The number of patients we screen for lung cancer has more than doubled in the past five years,” Dr. Costas said. In addition, Providence has seen a 20% reduction in lung cancer mortality in patients who received the low-dose CT scans compared to those who received standard chest x-rays. If the CT scan shows cancer, the next step is for Thoracic Surgeons like Dr. Costas and Dr. Alberton to perform a video mediastinoscopy to collect abnormal tissue for biopsy. If cancer is detected, more treatment is necessary. The good news for lung cancer patients is that Providence offers less invasive surgical options using robotics. In fact, it is the only robotics program north of Seattle to the Canadian border.

For patients with lung cancer, the shortened recovery time means they can begin potentially life-saving chemotherapy or other treatments sooner, as well. “Robotic technology offers the precision we need for even the most delicate thoracic surgeries,” Dr. Alberton noted. “And, as the program continues to grow, our ability to advance the care we provide our patients will grow, as well.”

A new video mediastinoscope used for diagnosing and staging lung cancer was an essential new addition to the Thoracic Surgery Program in 2017, and was funded by generous donor support.

Festival of Trees Again Breaks Records

Jubies Honored with Spirit of Festival Award Children’s Association Sets the Generous Tone for RecordBreaking Fund-a-Need

The 2017 Festival of Trees, themed “It’s a Wonderful Life,” proved to be truly wonderful from start to finish. The weeklong celebration, which raised a record $1.2 million, included four tinsel-filled events—an opening night dinner, community open house, gala and live auction, and the Providence General Children’s Association’s Teddy Bear Breakfast. A highlight of the annual festival was the gala and tree auction. More than 700 guests packed the ballroom for the sold-out event at the Tulalip Resort. They were wowed by spectacularly-decorated trees and wreaths, and gave generously.

Providence General Children’s Association (PGCA) kicked off the Fund-a-Need paddle raise with an unprecedented $50,000 donation. Jay and Terry Ackley, owners of K&H Integrated Print Solutions in Everett, followed the association’s lead with a matching gift to support the center and children in need. Providence General Foundation is incredibly grateful to PGCA and the Ackleys for their continued support and generosity.

The name says it all: Providence General Children’s Association. For the 300 women in the all-volunteer group, it really is about the kids. And that is why Providence General Children’s Association raised their paddle during Festival of Trees Fund-a-Need, making a $50,000 gift to support Providence Children’s Center.

Providence General Foundation honored the Jubie Family—Jan, Harv, Linda, and Larry—with the 2017 Spirit of Festival Award during the Festival of Trees Gala in early December. The award recognizes those who have invested time, treasure, and talent in support of Festival of Trees. “The Jubies embody this spirit like no one else” said Lori Kloes, Chief Development Officer at Providence General Foundation. “They’ve been integral to the growth and success of Festival of Trees for nearly 20 years—serving on the organizing committee, designing and decorating trees, and making themselves available to help throughout the weeklong celebration.” The Jubie family’s dedication has helped Festival of Trees become the wondrous regional event it is today.

Providence General Children’s Association volunteers operate gift shops at the Pacific and Colby campuses of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. In addition, the women of the children’s association host the annual Teddy Bear Breakfast, which wraps up the weeklong Festival of Trees. This year, more than 600 kids and their families attended the sold-out event. Providence General Foundation is beyond thankful for its longstanding partnership with Providence General Children’s Association and the group’s generous support of children and families in our ever-growing hospital community.

Gray skies didn’t dampen the spirits of a sold-out crowd at the 31st Annual Epicurean Affair at Anthony’s HomePort on March 14, 2017. The event, chaired by Andy and Kaye Hall, featured exquisite Northwest cuisine and exceptional wines— and helped Providence General Foundation raise more than $188,000 for the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership. Monies donated through the fund-a-need portion of the festive evening are already in action boosting the Patient Navigator Program at the Cancer Partnership to help ease the way of patients and families managing cancer treatment and recovery.

Also that evening, Phil and Kelly Johnson were honored with the Budd Gould Award, a special honor presented yearly to recognize those who’ve had an extraordinary impact on Providence and our community. The Johnsons care deeply about the Everett community and have a strong belief in supporting community based causes that make a true impact. We are honored to recognize the Johnson’s for their leadership, support and dedication to Providence.
