DEAR FRIENDS, When the dust clears and the accounts are written, the year 2008 will surely be remembered as one of the most difficult, extraordinary and historically significant in our country’s history. In 2008, we felt the pressure of a struggling global economy. We paid higher prices for food and fuel than ever before. We saw home values drop and unemployment rise. However, in the midst of our collective anxiety, there was reason to hope. We celebrated the election of our first African-American president—an extraordinary milestone and an entrée into a new era of opportunity and change. As our country evolved in 2008, so did the Providence General Foundation. Through the economic storm, our donors have remained steadfast in their vision and support of our mission. It was a record-breaking year. We started 2008 in a strong position, and built upon that solid foundation to set two records: largest total amount of gifts and commitments received, and largest single gift in the Foundation’s history. In 2008, we received more than $4.74 million in new gifts and commitments. This number includes the largest gift ever received in the Foundation’s history—a $1.75 million pledge from The Everett Clinic earmarked for the new Medical Tower construction project. Other highlights include the completion of a very successful Providence General Foundation/United Way Employee Campaign, which raised $182,000 from nearly 500 employee donors. Donors continued to support the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic, which will soon undergo another expansion to keep up with ever-increasing need among our medically underserved and low-income community members. The annual Epicurean Affair raised more than $107,000 to support the David J. Stewart, MD, Cardiovascular Education Fund, and the Festival of Trees brought in nearly $580,000 for the Providence Children’s Center. You’ll find more detail about all this activity—and the donors who make it possible—in the pages of this report. Of course, much attention goes now to the 680,000-square-foot Medical Tower being constructed on the current Colby Campus, and the fundraising campaign that we have launched to support it. This is a momentous project, and it will ensure that Providence is equipped to provide award-winning health care to a region expected to reach one million county residents in the next two decades. We are grateful, proud and appreciative of our donors—large and small—who support the health of this community in both the good times and in the bad.

INSPIRING EXCELLENCE, RAISING A TOWER FOR EACH PERSON LIVING HERE TODAY, AND FOR THOSE WHO WILL EVENTUALLY MOVE TO THIS COMMUNITY AND MAKE IT THEIR HOME, A PROJECT OF A SCALE UNLIKE ANY OTHER IN OUR HISTORY IS NOW UNDERWAY.
THE MOTIVE FOR CHANGE Providence Regional currently serves more than 350,000 patients annually and operates the Puget Sound’s busiest Emergency Department, with 106,000 visits last year. Staff members and physicians at Providence Regional are deeply committed to providing first-class care to this growing number of patients, and they do an exceptional job despite the everyday challenges and limitations presented by aging facilities that, even today, are operating at—or over—full capacity.
For nearly as long as Everett has been a city, Providence has been a dynamic and positive force for its residents’ health and well being. What started in 1905 as a 75-bed hospital in a renovated hotel, Providence Hospital—now Providence Regional Medical Center Everett—has grown and evolved in step with the community.
At present, the Medical Center’s services are split between two campuses, causing inefficiencies and patient inconvenience. Signs of the facilities’ age and overcapacity are apparent to staff, patients and visitors. In the emergency rooms, wait times are long and spaces are crowded. Elsewhere in the hospital, shared inpatient rooms do not offer the level of comfort, privacy and space found in most modern facilities.
Today, Providence Regional is a tertiary referral center serving a five-county region that sits on the cusp of intense growth and rapid change. Snohomish County alone, now home to 696,600 residents, is expected to reach a population of over one million in the next two decades.
Though Providence has completed numerous renovations to keep its buildings safe and functional through the years, the current physical plant clearly will not meet the needs of a growing community in years to come. A solution is needed, and now is the time.
2
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE Propelled by the community’s need, Providence Regional has initiated the largest, most comprehensive expansion project in its history. In 2011, Providence Regional will open the doors of a new 368-bed, $500 million, state-of-the-art medical tower bringing the total number of beds on both campuses to 468. This is the single largest infrastructure investment in Providence Health & Services’ five-state, 150-year history, and bringing the tower into being will require the largest fundraising effort in the history of Snohomish County. TAKE A LOOK INSIDE Once the tower is built and open, every resident of this community will have access to state-of-the-art medical care inside a beautiful setting that was designed for healing. Inside the tower’s doors: EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT: The 67,000-square-foot Emergency Department will encompass the entire ground level of the tower. A total of 79 private treatment rooms, including four trauma rooms and a designated pediatric area, will be designed to maximize patient and family privacy. Advanced CT scanners and x-ray machines will give medical staff access to immediate diagnostic and therapeutic capability. DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING: The new Diagnostic Imaging Department will span the entire first floor. This department will be filled with the latest imaging equipment and technology, and patient service areas will be clustered in suites for optimal privacy and efficiency. SURGICAL SERVICES: The
second and third floors will house state-of-the art Surgical Services. All surgical suites will be designed to adapt for technology as it evolves in the future.
INPATIENT ROOMS: The top five floors of the tower will be dedicated to Inpatient Rooms. Floors 6 and 7 will house 104 intensive and cardiac critical care rooms. Floors 8, 9 and 10 will each feature 56 patient rooms reserved for general medical or post-surgical patients.
From top to bottom, the medical tower has been designed with patients and families in mind. To improve patient outcomes and privacy, the majority of the inpatient rooms in the tower will be private and larger than traditional patient rooms. Virtually every room has a spectacular view—showing landscapes of the Puget Sound, the Cascade or Olympic Mountains, or a lush, serene rooftop garden growing atop the fourth floor visible to patients on floors 5 through 10.
On September 27, 2008, Providence Regional broke ground on the new Medical Tower and much progress has already been made. The tower taking shape on the Colby Campus will prepare the medical center to meet the growing demand for care in the region for decades to come.
SUPPORT FOR A BUILDING; PART OF A BUILDING, USUALLY BELOW THE GROUND, THAT TRANSFERS AND DISTRIBUTES THE WEIGHT OF THE BUILDING ONTO THE GROUND

THE FISCAL FOUNDATION Just as a hospital serves every member of a community, building it requires the support and cooperation of all.
Providence Regional Medical Center Everett and Providence Health & Services have committed $500 million toward the Medical Tower project. This is one of the largest private infrastructure investments in the region’s history, and the largest ever undertaken by Providence in this five-state region. The Providence investment represents a substantial portion of the funding required, but does not cover the project’s full cost. To close the gap, the Providence General Foundation Board of Directors launched a region-wide, multi-year campaign, which will engage the broader community in this historic partnership. This campaign will be the largest fund-raising initiative ever undertaken in Snohomish County. PILLARS OF SUPPORT The decision to proceed with the campaign followed an exhaustive feasibility study, which confirmed that the goal is realistic and public sentiment supports the Tower project. Soon after the campaign was launched, the Foundation received commitments for “lead” donations totaling $2.75 million from two physician groups: The Everett Clinic pledged $1.75 million and North Sound Emergency Medicine pledged $1 million. North Sound was the first medical group to pledge their support for the Tower, and The Everett Clinic gift is the largest in the Foundation’s history.
Other major donations followed these strong and generous foundational gifts. The Providence General Children’s Association pledged $500,000. The Tulalip Tribe Foundation pledged $400,000. And the Everett Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgical Associates pledged $100,000. TO THOSE WHO HAVE MADE SUCH GENEROUS GIFTS IN SUPPORT OF THE TOWER—AND FOR THOSE WHO WILL FOLLOW AS THE CAMPAIGN UNFOLDS—YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS WILL LIVE ON. The support and leadership of affiliated physician groups and community stakeholders sets a philanthropic example that underpins the fundraising efforts to come in the next few years. Large, early gifts from prominent organizations help to assure other potential donors that the project is critical and will be carried out successfully, even in difficult economic times. To those who have made such generous gifts in support of the tower—and for those who will follow as the campaign unfolds— your contributions will live on: in the hands of physicians drawn to our community because its medical facilities offer the tools and technology they need to provide superior care to their patients… and in the health and vitality of your neighbors, your friends, your children, and you.

SOMETHING IS BUILT UP OR OVERLAID
THE EVERETT CLINIC The Everett Clinic was among the first to pledge financial support to the Campaign for Providence. Harold Dash, MD, President of The Everett Clinic Board of Directors, says the decision to make their $1.75 million gift—the largest contribution ever received in the Foundation’s history—was based on the project’s importance to the people living in the region. “Providence Regional Medical Center Everett is an essential community resource,” Dr. Dash says. “We all know that there is a critical need to expand and modernize Providence’s facility and bring it into the twentyfirst century, so it can continue to provide the highest quality care for our patients.”
NORTH SOUND EMERGENCY MEDICINE North Sound Emergency Medicine, a provider-owned group of emergency physicians and allied health professionals, made the first medical group gift to the tower campaign—$1 million.
PROVIDENCE GENERAL CHILDREN’S ASSOCIATION The 320 women who volunteer as members of the Providence General Children’s Association come from all walks of life, but have something important in common: their concern for, and commitment to, our community’s kids. The Children’s Association generously committed $500,000 in support of the New Medical Tower. “It’s clear that more space is needed at Providence if we’re going to do a good job serving our kids and families; this is right in line with our purpose.” says Susie Black, president of the association.
Liam Yore, MD, the group’s Board President, says he and his colleagues have long understood the need for an upgrade to the Providence emergency care facilities. “When the tower project came around, we knew we’d have a major stake in it. There’s a huge need in the community, and we wanted to make a large contribution,” Dr. Yore says. “We hoped that by stepping up very early with a big gift, we’d set the bar high and motivate others to be as generous as they can.”
TULALIP TRIBE FOUNDATION Tulalip Tribes’ $400,000 pledge to the tower stems from its wish to support any project aimed at improving residents’ quality of life. Mel Sheldon, chairman of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington, says his organization’s relationship with Providence is long, and personal, since nearly every one of the tribe’s 4,000 members has received care at the hospital. “Most of us were born there. Our families gather there, and it’s where our members go when they are ready to continue on their journey.”

GROWING FOR GOOD Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic marks five years of serving our local community
A crisis in medical services has loomed large in our country, as well as Snohomish County, for the last several years. Lack of access to basic healthcare for uninsured or underinsured residents has created a precarious breach in our community’s safety net. In January 2004, the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic opened to address the demand for services and the unique circumstances of this vulnerable population. Thanks to the enormous generosity, foresight and responsibility among community members, a public fund drive raised more than $1 million and allowed the clinic to open and begin serving its mission.
There is no end in sight. From 5,500 medical visits in 2004 to an expected 12,000 visits in 2009, visits to the clinic will have increased by more than 100 percent. Also, visits have increased substantially in the last year for patients 50 and older, a consequence of low Medicare reimbursement. Many private practitioners cannot absorb the true cost of providing care for patients in this group. “WE ARE TRULY HELPING THE PEOPLE WE SERVE, AND WE COULD NOT CONTINUE WITHOUT THE INCREDIBLE GENEROSITY OF THIS COMMUNITY.” - Tony Roon, MD
The clinic reached capacity almost immediately after opening. More funding was sought to build additional exam rooms and to implement a mental healthcare program. A campaign launched in 2006 raised $750,000—$250,000 more than the original goal of $500,000—and in 2007, the clinic completed a 1,200-squarefoot expansion. LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD As the clinic marked its five-year anniversary at the beginning of 2009, there was much to celebrate. The clinic has earned national recognition for its innovative approach to staffing. It has successfully collaborated with county medical and social services, and has remained steadfast in its mission despite evergrowing volumes and continued constraints of low Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement.
A second clinic expansion is being planned to add four more primary care exam rooms, for a new total of fourteen. The clinic also hopes to increase capacity for mental health services. Tony Roon, MD, the clinic’s founder, says the clinic has made a genuine impact in the community in its first five years. “We are truly helping the people we are here to serve, and we could not continue without the incredible generosity of this caring community,” he says. “It humbles me to see so many contributing so much to help their neighbors to thrive and live with dignity.”

ARE SEWN IN PATCHWORK, CREATING A QUILT
PARTNERING—FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW One of the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic’s most unique and effective innovations is its use of a mid-level nurse practitioner model instead of a physicianbased system, which makes it possible for the clinic to operate more cost-effectively while retaining a high level of clinical quality. The University of Washington School of Nursing (UWSON) has collaborated with the clinic since its inception, serving as a training site for undergraduate and graduate nursing students in primary care, mental health and community practice rotations. Through this program the clinic is staffed primarily by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, all passionate about delivering holistic and cost-effective care.
HANDING DOWN THE LEGACY
Several UWSON students have completed research projects at the clinic related to conditions such as post-partum depression, tobacco cessation and diabetes management. In addition to addressing immediate staffing needs, the collaboration between UWSON and the clinic could help alleviate Snohomish County’s health professional shortage. Each quarter, eight to ten students complete practice experiences at the clinic. To date, 70 students have completed 83 rotations; some have chosen to continue practicing in Snohomish County after graduation.
As Dr. Roon’s vision for the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic unfolded, he consulted with community leaders to engage their interest and enlist their help. He spoke to the media to increase public awareness, raised money, and devised a plan and structure for a fiscally sustainable clinic. Now, five years after the clinic’s opening, Dr. Roon has entrusted his vision, and the role of clinic leader, to a new medical director, Marcia Wharton, MD. Dr. Wharton joined the clinic last fall. She manages clinical operations, provides medical oversight and works side-by-side with the clinic’s providers caring for patients. With a background in primary care, Dr. Wharton has special interests in teaching and mental health care. The opportunity to mentor new practitioners and the clinic’s focus on developing its mental healthcare capabilities both influenced her decision to join the team. “It’s an excellent fit,” Dr. Wharton says. “I share Dr. Roon’s vision for the future of this clinic, and I believe our current priorities are right in line with the community’s needs. I love to teach, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help contribute to the education of students who will shape the future of health care in Snohomish County.” Though Dr. Roon is leaving his position as medical director, he likely will be seen often at the clinic and at clinic fund-raising events. “With Dr. Wharton at the helm, I will focus time and energy on garnering community support for the clinic,” Dr. Roon says. “I remain passionate about the clinic’s mission and supporters, and I believe there is a lot left for me to do. I look forward to advocating for the clinic in my new role.”

2008 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS THE EPICUREAN AFFAIR Well known for their generous spirit, the owners and staff at Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant in Everett once again joined forces with the Providence General Foundation to host the 22nd Annual Epicurean Affair in March. The event, featuring fine northwest wine and cuisine, helped raise more than $107,000 to benefit cardiovascular education in our region. A special thanks to Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant, chairpersons Jamie and Kathy Hunter, and all our sponsors and donors for making the 2008 Epicurean Affair a night to remember.
FESTIVAL OF TREES: “THE MAGIC LIVES ON” Although months have passed and the holiday decorations have been packed away, the magic of the 2008 Festival of Trees still lingers in the air. Chaired by Bob and Margaret Bavasi, the week-long celebration took on a spirit of wonder and awe drawing in nearly $580,000 and record crowds. Thank you to the Festival Committee and all our generous donors, sponsors, and volunteers who year after year wholeheartedly invest in this magical event which benefits the Providence Children’s Center.
“RUN OF THE MILL” RAISES $25K A new partnership was formed in 2008 between the Run of the Mill—a local 5k run winding through the town of Mill Creek— and the Providence General Foundation. Previously proceeds from the community race were donated to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. But in 2008, the race committee decided to pass the baton—and all the race proceeds—to a local cause. Selected was the Providence General Foundation’s Linda Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund which supports patients during their cancer treatment. Each of the 1,400 race entry fees was donated for a total of more than $25,000 going to the Providence General Foundation.
