Dear Friends: The warmer, longer days are here. After weathering more than two years of uncertainty—in our families, our businesses, and around the world—spring reminds us that the sun comes out, eventually.

Flowers bloom again. Birds sing. Dark winters don’t last.

As we reflect upon 2021, it isn’t the uncertainty that sticks with us. What stands out are steadfast supporters who continually uplifted our medical center and its staff. We’re inspired by compassionate caregivers who exemplified grit and grace while tirelessly working to comfort and heal the sick through one of health care’s most tumultuous times.

In 2021, our community donated $6.3 million dollars to support the work and Mission of Providence Everett. That is truly remarkable, especially during a time when we couldn’t hold in-person fundraising events and while many businesses and industries navigated rocky terrain. Yet, our generous and caring community saw the need and stepped in, once again.

This essential funding is already transforming lives. It has helped open a new electrophysiology and cardiovascular procedure lab to treat the growing number of patients with heart problems. It’s purchasing new medical equipment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Family Maternity Center.

It’s building a rooftop patio for long-term patients to experience nature’s healing power outside the hospital walls. It is also helping the most vulnerable in our community get the assistance they need— such as clothing, vouchers for transportation to appointments, or free health screenings—to protect or regain their health. Philanthropy is what allows Providence to keep raising the bar in health care, even during difficult times.

Your unwavering generosity in 2021 lifted our Campaign for A Greater Providence beyond its original goal. Now, in the campaign’s final months, $30 million is within reach. In the pages of this magazine, you’ll see what this campaign has already made possible. You’ll also see what’s left to achieve and how you can help bring this historic initiative to the finish line. If you haven’t yet joined us, we invite you to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make an impact on health throughout our region, and for years to come.

Looking ahead, we’re optimistic about the rest of 2022. Lower COVID numbers are loosening restrictions on visitors in our hospital and postponed procedures have resumed. We’re planning to bring back Foundation in-person events such as Festival of Trees. We know we will likely face more challenges in the future, and we’re so glad you are beside us—through it all. We deeply appreciate you.

CLINICAL RESEARCH

Cutting-Edge COVID Research Put our Hometown Hospital on the Map

I

n January of 2020, when the nation’s first known COVID patient quietly came through Providence Everett’s doors, most people outside Washington state probably hadn’t even heard of our hometown hospital.

PBS, CNN, NPR, CNBC—it was an alphabet soup of interview requests. Telemundo, Univision, Geek Wire, all the local stations and papers wanted the latest about COVID. Providence Everett was leading the way.

Within a few weeks, though, Providence Everett was in the international spotlight as our caregivers successfully treated that first patient and conducted research that set the standard for COVID treatment.

While Dr. Diaz was the “face” the world saw in those interviews, an entire team of researchers worked tirelessly behind the scenes—pulling all-nighters when needed—to discover how to best treat this novel coronavirus. Their tenacious labor and expertise not only helped that first patient; it laid the groundwork for how doctors everywhere would treat the deadly virus.

“The media response was intense, and we received interview requests from around the world,” said infectious disease physician George Diaz, MD, who treated “Patient Zero.”

More than two years later, Providence Everett is still in the spotlight, and its research team has helped it shine, conducting a dozen different COVID research studies— including two that helped set the standards of care for the virus.

Behind the scenes of remdesivir research Under Providence’s care, Patient Zero was the first COVID patient in the world to receive the antiviral drug remdesivir—which had been developed to fight Ebola. Not only did the drug work for COVID, it worked more quickly than the protocol established for its use.

Based on that patient’s experience, Providence Everett proposed a study comparing five versus ten days of remdesivir treatments.

The initial study was conducted at Providence Everett and Swedish First Hill, with 20 additional Providence St. Joseph Health hospitals eventually joining.

The research team at Providence Everett enrolled more patients into the study than any other healthcare facility around the world.

The study showed no significant difference in effectiveness between 5-day and 10-day treatments.

“Five days became the standard of care, based on our study,” Dr. Diaz said. “In essence, that doubled the amount of remdesivir available to patients worldwide.”

Two years later, remdesivir is the only FDA-approved treatment for COVID.

“It’s definitely a team effort,” Dr. Diaz said. “Without this team of dedicated doctors, researchers, nurses, etc., we wouldn’t have been able to enroll hundreds of patients into these studies—which have now been shown to save lives.”

Regeneron monoclonal antibody study

Prov Everett involved in a variety of research

Monoclonal antibodies are man-made proteins designed to mimic our immune response to pathogens like the COVID virus.

The goal is to boost the immune system and reduce the chances a virus can make a patient severely ill.

While Dr. Diaz serves as the primary study investigator on COVID research at Providence Everett, many caregivers are involved.

Researchers at Providence Everett studied Regeneron’s monoclonal antibody treatment and found patients had a significant reduction in symptoms, faster recovery, and reduced rates of hospitalization and death.

As a result, the FDA authorized Regeneron’s monoclonal antibody treatment for emergency use for patients at high risk of severe COVID complications.

“Our infectious disease physicians— Drs. Robert Choi, Daniel McClung and Albert Pacifico—are vital,” Dr. Diaz said. “They counsel patients about studies, complete the paperwork necessary to enroll them, and monitor outcomes and possible side effects of these novel treatments.”

Then, the Clinical Research team takes the wheel. During the first remdesivir study, a dedicated team of five research coordinators and assistants pored over thousands of COVID patient charts to see who fit the criteria. They advised the doctors about who to approach for consent and enrollment. The team analyzed patient charts to ensure study protocols—like lab tests and imaging studies—were followed.

“Patients at Providence Everett have access to research studies because of the dedication, support, and cooperation of countless caregivers,” said Jerry Differding, Director of Clinical Research for Providence Northwest Washington. “From nurses and CNAs providing direct care, to pharmacy, lab, respiratory therapy, imaging, dietary, environmental services, finance, compliance—the list goes on. Every department supports research in some way.”

Patient Zero, and the resulting coverage of world-class COVID research, got Providence Everett noticed, but research here goes well beyond COVID. A growing team of highly trained research coordinators and assistants is currently working on 70 different studies around cancer, heart disease, trauma, behavioral health, substance use disorder, and more. They have a singular goal: helping patients.

STROKE CARE

Neuroscience Advancements Saving Lives A s 68-year-old Camano Island resident Patt Bass stepped out of the shower one morning last year, she couldn’t dry herself. Her arms wouldn’t move.

“First it was the arms, and then it was like the rest of my body just stopped working,” she remembers.

Patt fell to the ground so hard her husband heard her from downstairs.

“He said to me, ‘What’s the matter?’ and my brain wanted to talk, but I couldn’t get my mouth to talk,” Patt said.

Patt was having a massive stroke.

Her husband called 911—and the race to save Patt’s active, on-the-go life began.

Fortunately for Patt, an innovative emergency stroke treatment had just become available to patients 24/7 at Providence Everett.

In the emergency department, Patt heard doctors tell her husband they recommend an endovascular thrombectomy—a minimally invasive procedure which allows specialists to use a catheter inserted in the groin to rapidly reach and remove a stroke-causing clot. They said Patt could be severely disabled if they didn’t quickly clear the clot in her brain. For this avid golfer, hiker, and community volunteer, that was terrifying to hear.

Time is critical

Doctors often use the phrase “time is brain” when it comes to stroke. As many as two million brain cells can die every minute during a stroke.

Restoring blood flow to the brain quickly saves lives and brain tissue.

When Patt awoke from the procedure, she could move her arms, her legs—and she could talk again.

“I felt almost like nothing had happened,” she said. Patt was discharged just two days later and played in a golf tournament a few days after that. Not only did she play, Patt won the entire tournament of more than 70 women. “I tried to give you a chance by having a massive stroke last week,” she joked with her fellow golfers.

“You can’t even imagine how much it means to me,” Patt said through tears. “It’s tears of joy.

I feel so blessed to be in this position to have had a stroke like that and have it turn out so well.”

Advances fueled by donor funding Patt’s outcome is one of several success stories of the endovascular thrombectomy program that began at Providence Everett in early January of 2021. Forty-seven patients received an emergency thrombectomy in the program’s first year—averaging almost one per week.

Prior to 2021, patients who needed this emergency procedure often had to be transferred to a Seattle hospital, which could add 60 to 90 minutes to the critical window of time for treatment.

“It has been so exciting to offer this service here in our community,” said Lisa Shumaker, RN, Providence Everett’s Stroke Program Coordinator since 2009. “We have seen some amazing recoveries and this program provides patients with the opportunity to achieve the best outcomes.”

Lisa enjoys contributing to the work and Mission of Providence, both on the job and as a donor to Providence General Foundation through employee giving. She says, over the years, she has seen philanthropy help make life-saving advances like this possible.

In addition to the ability to perform endovascular thrombectomies at any time of day or night here in Everett, Providence Everett also recently invested in a second computerized tomography (CT) scanner in the Emergency Department. That means if one scanner is being used—for a trauma patient, for instance—a stroke patient can go to the second one.

Investments like these save minutes… when they count the most.

“It’s very rewarding and so exciting to see patients have another chance to live a full life,” Lisa said.

Festival Brings Better Care to Our Tiniest Patients M uch-needed medical equipment to save our tiniest patients and their mothers is coming soon to Providence’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Family Maternity Center—thanks to community support from Festival of Trees 2021.

New Giraffe Omnibeds in the NICU will help care for “micro-preemies”— babies born between 22- and 26-weeks’ gestation and/or weighing less than 1 lb. 12 oz. These high-tech incubators manage temperature, sound, and oxygen levels for fragile newborns.

New bed warmers, which both warm and weigh babies, were also funded.

These warmers feature a rotating mattress that allows a preemie to

receive care without the stress and risk of unnecessary movement and temperature changes.

“Our NICU is so excited and blessed to receive these amazing donations,” said NICU Manager Jennie Schaffer, BSN, RNC-NIC. “Thank you to the Foundation and our amazing donors for helping us provide excellent care for our community’s tiniest patients!”

Providence’s Family Maternity Center will also receive important equipment upgrades funded by Festival gifts. Fifteen maternal fetal monitors, which detect life-threatening complications in women who have just delivered a baby, will allow caregivers to intervene quickly in high-risk situations.

“The quality in care that can be provided to our mothers post-delivery is essential in saving lives,” said Obstetrical Services Manager Lisa Von Herbulis, MSN, BSN, RNC-OB.

A reimagined Festival continues spirit of giving We are constantly amazed by our compassionate and generous community. Despite not being able to gather for in-person events again due to the ongoing pandemic, local businesses, Providence caregivers, and individuals gave a generous $1.2 million through the virtual Festival of Trees in 2021.

“I am blown away by the dedication and devotion of this community to our hospital, to our families, and to our babies,” said Laawna Murchison, MN-E, RNC-NIC, Providence Everett’s Director of Women and Children’s Services. “This equipment is so necessary for us to continue to be able to serve our community.

An enclosed rooftop patio will feature fresh air and a view of our beautiful surroundings for patients who have long hospital stays, such as for psychiatric, cancer or hospice care. Research shows that a connection with nature helps promote physical and mental healing.

Breast Cancer Survivorship Guide Getting diagnosed with cancer can be a scary, confusing time. Thanks to donors, Providence Comprehensive Breast Center patients diagnosed with breast cancer receive a book to guide them through diagnosis, treatment options , and the emotional aspects of the disease. The nearly 300-page book informs and empowers patients as they move through and beyond their cancer treatment.

Caring for our Caregivers During the height of the latest COVID surge in January, many of our Providence caregivers were discouraged and tired. The community lifted their spirits with heartfelt messages and boxes of snacks and treats.

Donors helped Providence General Foundation provide more than 80 “Nourishment & Encouragement” boxes, decorated with messages of support, to our Providence caregivers in our hospital and clinics. Thank you for showing our caregivers that you see and appreciate them!

Wheels on the Waterfront Big thank you to the many volunteers and attendees who made the 2021 Wheels on the Waterfront Event a success.

It raised $25,000 for the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund at Providence Regional Cancer Partnership.

The 2022 event will be on August 27th at Boxcar Park at the Port of Everett. Mark your calendar to see classic cars and support those who are going through cancer treatment.

Book Drive The Providence Boyden Family Autism Center is celebrating a bundle of brand-new books and developmental supplies, thanks to a book and supply drive spearheaded by the Everett Woman’s Book Club.

Adapted books—with things such as larger text, pictures matched to words, and vivid visuals—keep children with autism engaged with what they’re reading and learning. Developmental games, toys, and crafts help children use “play” to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and small motor skills.

A Legacy of Care for Her Community Mary Jane Miller (1923-2022) For 28 years Mary Jane Miller volunteered her time comforting families and loved ones in the Family Surgery Waiting Room at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. She also served on Providence General Children’s Association (PGCA) Board, was the Guild 8 President for PGCA, a longtime committee member for Festival of Trees, and supporter of Providence General Foundation.

In lieu of a service, Mary Jane requested remembrances be made to the organizations she loved most. We are so grateful for her longtime service and are honored to be named one of her charities of choice.

She will be greatly missed.

New Board Member We are happy to welcome Mike Holcomb as Providence General Foundation’s newest member of the Board of Directors.

Mike spent much of his career in the paper industry, moving to Everett in 1995 as vice president of operations at the Everett Kimberly-Clark plant. After retiring from Kimberly-Clark in 1999, Mike served as Executive Director for the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross and later as the Assistant General Manager for Snohomish County PUD. Mike has served on many local boards including the Everett Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and the Providence Regional Medical Center Board. He also served more than 15 years on the Providence Health & Services Board. Welcome, Mike!

Larry Jubie Elected Emeritus We’re pleased to honor Lawrence “Larry” Jubie with Emeritus Board Member status on the Providence General Foundation Board of Directors.

Larry retired from a career in banking in 1993, but kept busy with decades of community volunteer work, international humanitarian trips, and service on numerous local committees and boards.

Larry served on the Providence General Foundation board for more than 17 years, including a three-year term as Chairman.

We are so thankful for Larry’s dedication to this community and to Providence General Foundation.

Tina Gilson Named Chief Philanthropy Officer This past winter, Tina Gilson was named Chief Philanthropy Officer of Providence General Foundation. Tina has been with Providence in Everett for 17 years, serving in a variety of leadership roles in Marketing, as the Foundation’s Director of Annual Giving and Communications, and most recently as the Director of Development and interim Chief Philanthropy Officer.

In her 12 years with the Foundation, she has provided creativity and strategic leadership to grow the Foundation’s events, annual giving programs, caregiver campaigns, communications, and both major and planned giving. She has been instrumental in two major campaigns—the campaign for Providence’s Cymbaluk Medical Tower and the Campaign for A Greater Providence. Tina is deeply committed to our donor family, Providence, and the community, and we are so excited and fortunate to have her leadership.
