REPORT to the COMMUNITY
2009
Providence General Foundation Mission Providence General Foundation cultivates the charitable spirit of the community by raising and distributing funds to promote health and wellness primarily through the programs and services of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Our fundraising efforts are guided by our core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship.
The Providence Mission As people of Providence we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service.
Steadfast Support Woven through the pages of this report is a story—a golden thread of steadfast support that has carried the Providence General Foundation through yet another year triumphantly. It is this unwavering loyalty through good times and bad that really defines an organization and the donors who support it. The 2009 Report to the Community is a tribute to this steadfast support. A tribute to our donors like you for believing in the important mission of Providence and improving the well-being of our community. We invite you to follow this golden thread of support as we reflect upon the past year with both pride and gratitude of what we accomplished together.

Dear Friends, The year 2009, much like 2008 before it, was a challenge for our country and our local community. The recession’s effects lingered. In Snohomish County, jobs were scarce and real estate values remained low. Though sobering financial reports certainly take an emotional toll, there have also been significant advantages to these difficult economic times. We all have been challenged to improvise, to live more mindfully, and to find new ways to accomplish what must be done. In many ways, we look back on the year 2009 as a profound triumph. During 2009, supporters of the Providence mission proved their loyalty and steadfastness, in the hard times as well as the good. We discovered in our donors tenacity and the ability to look beyond the current climate as we prepared for—and looked forward to—the brighter days that we know lie ahead. In 2009, we enjoyed overwhelming volunteer support. More than 50 leaders in business, community and medicine joined to form the Campaign for Providence Committee in support of the new Medical Tower at Providence. These leaders made personal financial contributions, donated their time to projects and events, and served as ambassadors to the community. They are organized and primed to commence fundraising in earnest in 2010, as our community regains its economic footing. By the end of 2009, we raised more than $4.5 million in support of the new Medical Tower now under construction and on schedule to open in 2011. This included a major gift of $250,000 from the Waterman Medical Foundation.
Providence Regional employees made giving history in 2009. The Power of Giving employee campaign raised more than $220,000, far exceeding the campaign goal of $125,000. Premera Blue Cross stepped forward with a $100,000 grant to support the Cardiac Level 1 Network, a regional healthcare collaborative focused on improving patient care quality and outcomes for heart attack patients. Three popular Foundation events inspired communitywide commitment to helping others, especially in times of hardship. The Epicurean Affair started the year with a festive bang at Anthony’s HomePort Restaurant. Proceeds from the Columbia Funding Mortgage’s Run of the Mill 5k Run totaled more than $38,000—a 34 percent increase from the year before. At the year-end Festival of Trees, donors contributed $654,000, with a 50% increase in net revenue from 2008.
We discovered in our supporters tenacity and the ability to look beyond the current climate as we prepared for—and looked forward to—the brighter days that we know lie ahead.
In the pages of this report, we look back not only on 2009, but on an entire decade of steadfast support from individuals, corporations and foundations, all who had the generosity and foresight to support our mission through the years, and in preparation for the years ahead. This report is a tribute to our extraordinary donors and volunteers. To all of you, we extend our most sincere thanks and gratitude.

STEADFAST GENEROSITY:Celebrating a Decade of Donors Making a Difference On January 1, 2000, Providence General Medical Center became Providence Everett Medical Center, and thus began a decade of transformation. Along with a new identity, the organization’s leaders soon unveiled a Master Site Plan that would position the medical center to keep pace with dramatic population growth and a rapidly changing healthcare environment. Keeping pace and staying true to the Providence mission has required an unprecedented level of support from the community. As patient need began to outstrip capacity in several clinical areas,
Providence donors demonstrated their steadfast generosity and compassion, time and time again, contributing nearly $26 million during the past 10 years. This support has helped to transform the Providence Regional campuses through several planned phases, beginning with construction of the Providence Pavilion for Women and Children, opening and expansion of the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic, building the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership, and finally, breaking ground on the 12-story, $500 million, state-of-the-art Medical Tower. Donors also contributed generously to critical projects such as the Cardiac Surgery Single-Stay Unit, which opened in 2003, and construction of two state-of-the-art cardiac and vascular intervention labs in 2004.
While some donors made direct financial contributions, others participated in organized fundraising events, such as the Spirit of Caring Annual Awards, Women’s Wellness Luncheons and Providence Dinner Series in the early years, and the still-popular Festival of Trees, The Epicurean Affair and the new Run of the Mill 5K run hosted by Columbia Funding Mortgage. Each event is devoted to raising money for a special, missionrelated purpose, and proceeds have increased steadily through the years. Regardless of the method or style of giving, or the amount of the check they write, all donors have played a crucial role in helping Providence create, shape and sustain quality, state-of-the-art health care for a growing region.
2004
Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic
2002
In 2003, hundreds of community members and businesses answered a call for support to help meet the grave need for access to medical care among the region’s uninsured and underinsured. Following a successful year-long fundraising campaign, Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic opened in January of 2004. Efforts to raise $490,000 resulted in contributions in excess of $1 million.
Providence Pavilion for Women and Children As the new century dawned, Providence was struggling to keep pace with burgeoning demand for labor and delivery, pediatric and women’s health services in the region. The Providence General Foundation initiated a campaign in 2000 to raise $7.6 million to help build the Providence Pavilion for Women and Children. By the campaign’s end in 2002, more than $6.8 million had been raised. The beautiful, five-story Pavilion for Women and Children opened in May 2002 featuring sweeping views of Puget Sound, Cascade Mountains and Everett’s cityscape. 2
The Pavilion opened on Mother’s Day, 2002, and houses under one roof a wide array of state-of-theart healthcare services for women and children, including the Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Family Maternity Center, Comprehensive Breast Center and many other leading-edge services.
Dr. Tony Roon was instrumental in the development of the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic which opened in 2004.
In 2006, a new campaign began with a goal to raise $500,000 to expand the clinic space and integrate essential mental health services. This campaign raised $750,000, and in 2007, the clinic completed its expansion of space and mental health services. Crucial to the clinic’s ongoing success are programmatic grants from United Way of Snohomish County and The EverTrust Foundation along with capital grants from the Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound.

Providence Regional Cancer Partnership
For years, healthcare leaders in Snohomish County recognized that the community’s need for cancer treatment would eventually outstrip their capacity to provide it. The solution—developing, building and maintaining a world-class cancer facility—was daunting. It required massive support from the local medical community, civic leaders and community members. The Cancer Partnership combines the power of four leading healthcare providers to offer comprehensive cancer treatment under one roof: • Providence Regional Medical Center Everett • The Everett Clinic • Northwest Washington Radiation Oncology Associates • Western Washington Medical Group
In June 2007, the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership opened the doors on a new state-of-the-art, 100,000-squarefoot facility in Everett. Local community leaders, organizations, foundations, and individuals invested in the Partnership through major gifts, as well as memorial and honor gifts, to support construction. The campaign, which was initiated by Providence General Foundation, raised nearly $5.3 million.
New Tower at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett In their initial Master Site Plan released a decade ago, the medical center’s leaders sought to avert what was becoming critical lack of space, particularly in surgery and emergency services. In September 2008, Providence Regional broke ground on its largest expansion project in history: a $500 million, 368-bed, 12-story, state-of-the-art Medical Tower. In 2008, the Providence General Foundation launched a region-wide, multi-year, multi-million dollar campaign to help support the construction of the new Tower. The campaign is the largest fund-raising effort ever undertaken in Snohomish County—both in dollar amount and community impact. And by the end of 2009 more than $4.5 million had been raised. 3
RAISING the TOWER The Value of Volunteers Behind every successful fundraising campaign is a team of people who believe so strongly in their mission that they will go to great lengths to accomplish it. The new Medical Tower is rising to meet the medical needs of our large—and rapidly growing—community. It will take supporters from all corners, and from all walks of life, to connect with potential donors and volunteers in the expansive region that the medical center serves. Recruiting an army The year 2009 was extraordinary in the level of commitment from individuals in our community who stepped up to lead the Campaign for Providence in its support of the new Medical Tower. More than 50 community leaders, business owners, physicians, and compassionate friends of Providence came forward to serve on the Steering Committee for this historic capital campaign. This amount of support would be remarkable in the best of times, but in the current economic climate, it shows once again the steadfast commitment of Providence supporters through good times and bad. The Steering Committee is led by co-chairs Harv and Jan Jubie, who will spearhead the campaign with the assistance of a Campaign Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee members will lead subcommittees focused on raising philanthropic support from leading individuals, various groups, such as the greater medical community, local corporations, hospital and foundation boards, past patients, and many others. “Being able to recruit so many deeply committed and capable volunteers has been very encouraging. This committee is our ‘army of advocates,’ ready to reach people in our greater community in 2010.” — Randy Petty Chief Development Officer, Providence General Foundation
All told, this group of Executive Committee and subcommittee volunteers will employ their talents, expertise and extensive knowledge of the region toward strategic planning, identifying potential supporters, and reaching out to the various constituencies. “The support of these volunteer leaders is priceless,” says Randy Petty, Chief Development Officer, Providence General Foundation. “A campaign of this magnitude cannot be successful without leaders who are devoted to the organization’s mission and work, as every one of these volunteers is. We are deeply indebted to these volunteers who have come forward to lead this historic campaign.”

Steadfast Leaders Marysville residents Harv and Jan Jubie were born at Providence, as were their 11 siblings and three daughters. The family has maintained a loyal connection to Providence in the decades since. Harv and Jan both have served in various volunteer leadership roles through the years. Today, Harv serves as First Vice Chairman on the Providence General Foundation Board of Directors. Jan helps run the hospital’s gift shops as a volunteer in the Providence General Children’s Association.

In 2009, Harv and Jan again stepped forward —this time to serve as the campaign’s co-chairs. Harv says that for him, the decision to take a lead role was not difficult. “Providence will need a lot of help, from many people, to get this facility up and going, and the expansion is long overdue,” he says. “I just believe that if something needs to be done, we should do it, and that’s why I’m involved.” Jan says she was inspired to take a co-chair position for philanthropic reasons. “Providence provides so much care for people who can’t afford it, and that appeals to me,” Jan says. “Strong medical care in a community is vital. Everyone, someday, will seek care at Providence Regional. We want to help make sure the facility is in place to provide that care.”

Bernard and Margaret Waterman
Waterman Medical Foundation Makes Generous Gift
Employees Raise more than $220,000 in the Power of Giving Campaign
The Waterman Medical Foundation was established by Bernard (Bud) Waterman in 1981, in the months before he passed away of cancer. It was funded by the gradual sale of approximately 500 acres of timberland property on Whidbey Island, which Bernard had acquired through the years as he grew his company, Waterman Mill, Inc.
Providence Regional employees made history once again in 2009. Through a spirit of contagious generosity, the Power of Giving Employee Campaign exceeded all goals and previous records—raising more than $220,000 during the campaign in support of the Providence General Foundation and United Way. Employees far exceeded the campaign goal of $125,000, and participation increased by 16 percent.
Langley resident Debra Waterman, daughter of Bernard and Margaret, has served as the Foundation’s trustee through the years. She and her siblings serve on an advisory board to direct the Foundation’s distributions, and have provided continued support to Providence Regional through the years. The Foundation supported the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership and the Pavilion for Women and Children with gifts of $100,000 to both capital campaigns. In 2009, the family announced its plan to give $250,000 in support of the Tower. “We believe Providence Regional does an excellent job caring for the people in this community,” Debra says. “And as a family, we realized that the construction of the Tower provided us a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to honor my father’s life’s work.” 6
Employee donors Lynette Roberson, Frederick Frowner, Joy Knox, and Elisabeth Hellman.
Of the campaign total, approximately $145,000 of the pledges were designated to the Providence General Foundation to support various programs and services at Providence Regional, and $75,000 to the local United Way in support of various community-based programs. In the midst of current economic uncertainty, this abundant generosity from employees clearly demonstrates an unfaltering support and commitment to our hospital and community. Thank you to all of our Power of Giving supporters for a record-breaking year.

Premera has a Big Heart for Heart Health Heart muscle requires oxygen from the blood to live. Every minute that blood flow is blocked during heart attack can mean that valuable heart muscle is permanently destroyed. Getting immediate treatment for a heart attack can keep a heart—and the patient—alive. Thanks to a generous grant from Premera Blue Cross more people are now being educated on the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when heart attack symptoms occur. Premera awarded a $100,000 grant to the Providence General Foundation to support a regional awareness initiative designed to educate people on the importance of calling 911 at the first signs of heart attack. The one-year campaign being coordinated by the Cardiac Level I Network—a collaboration of regional emergency service providers and hospitals—is said to reach communities throughout Snohomish, Island, Skagit and San Juan counties.
Columbia Funding Mortgage’s Run of the Mill 5k Race For the second consecutive year, Columbia Funding Mortgage’s Run of the Mill—a 5k community run in Mill Creek—donated 100% of race entry fees to the Foundation’s Linda Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. Proceeds from this year’s July run totaled more than $38,000—a 34 percent increase from the previous year. Funding from the race directly helps cancer patients pay for prescriptions, transportation to appointments, utility costs, and other needs. A big thank you goes out to Columbia Funding Mortgage, a locally owned business in Mill Creek, and to all who supported the 2009 Run of the Mill race. To learn more, visit mcrunofthemill.com.

Festival of Trees: Gifts of the Season
The Epicurean Affair
The first week of December goes into the history books as the Foundation’s most successful Festival of Trees yet—bringing in nearly $655,000 in revenue.
With co-chairs Harold Dash, MD, and Victoria Romero at the helm, the 23rd Annual Epicurean Affair sailed into success with more than $84,000 raised to benefit the David J. Stewart, MD, Cardiovascular Education Fund. Thank you to all who sponsored and attended the festive evening in support of cardiovascular education in our region.
Kicking off the premier holiday event, more than 340 guests enjoyed the jazzy Opening Night featuring a silent auction and dancing amidst the trees. On Wednesday the free Community Open House drew nearly 3,000 people to view the trees and enjoy entertainment by local community groups. Thursday, the sold-out, black-tie Gala event attracted more than 500 guests with live auction proceeds exceeding $135,000 and a special Fund-a-Need presentation featuring three families from the Children’s Center raising an additional $124,000 of support. And the final event—the Teddy Bear Breakfast—packed the sold-out house with nearly 600 guests. A sincere thank you to the 2009 Festival Chairs Gordon and Carol Bjorg, Title Sponsor Mortenson Construction, and the many other sponsors, volunteers, and guests who helped make history this year.

Year after year, Anthony’s owner and founder, Budd Gould and his gracious staff close the restaurant to the public for the evening and donate the use of the space, staff, and all the fine cuisine to benefit the Providence General Foundation. This tremendous gift is certainly a testament of Anthony’s generous spirit and community support.
