Acupressure Acupressure is a complementary medicine technique derived from acupuncture. In acupressure, physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points. $40/session Tuesdays & Wednesdays
Healthy Steps Therapeutic exercise and movement program also known as the “Lebed Method.” $8/class Tuesdays 1:30-2:30 pm
Beginners Yoga Class ($69 fee, space limited) Beginners group that will focus on learning the basics of yoga breathing, meditation, principles of body alignment, yoga poses and relaxation. Monday and Wednesdays in August, 9:00-10:00 am
Acupuncture An ancient whole medical system using very thin needles to promote the free flow of energy in the body. $40/session Monday-Thursday NEW: $25/session with senior acupuncture students, appointment times available. Mondays, 1:30-4:30 pm Hypnotherapy Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and concentration in which deeper parts of the mind become more accessible. $75 initial visit, $50 follow-up visits Thursdays, 10:00 am -2:00 pm; Wednesdays 3:00-4:00 pm & 5:30-7:00 pm Massage Unwind and relax with a healing massage. 30-minute and 60-minute sessions available. $30 for 30-min. / $60 for 60-min. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 1st and 3rd Fridays Qi Gong Individual therapy that is part of traditional Chinese medicine in which gentle movements and breathing promote the free flow of Qi (energy). $40/session Wednesdays, 9:00 am -4:00 pm Reiki Reduce stress, relax and promote healing. Reiki uses a technique commonly called “palm healing” as a form of complementary and alternative medicine. $40/session Tuesdays, 9:00 am-1:00 pm
Laughter Yoga Breathing, movement and laughter exercises engage the body, mind and spirit to decrease stress, boost the immune system help you feel more positive about life. $8/class Wednesdays, 11:00 am Qi Gong A part of traditional Chinese medicine in which gentle movements and breathing promote the free flow of Qi (energy). $8/class Wednesdays, 10:00-11:00 am Wednesdays, 4:00-5:00 pm Stress Reduction Group Learn how to access your inner calm through imagery and muscle relaxation. Led by Paula Getty-Shearer. $8/class Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30 pm Stretch & Strengthen End a long week by stretching and strengthening your body. $8/class 1st and 3rd Fridays, 4:00-5:00 pm Tai Chi A traditional Asian form of exercise adapted from the martial arts and involving slow flowing movements. This is sometimes called “moving meditation.” $8/class Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30 pm Yoga Create balance in the body by developing both strength and flexibility. Good for the mind, body and spirit. $8/class Monday through Friday Gift certificates available
Look Good / Feel Better This program helps individuals with cancer look good, improve self esteem, and manage treatment and recovery with confidence. Includes instruction in skin care and make-up application, and a complimentary make-up kit filled with donated products. Call for your reservation: (818) 748-4713. LECTURES (RSVP: 1-888-HEALING) Learn to Align Your Body with Nature for Freedom ($30 fee, space limited) Learn how to alleviate aches and pains in your back, shoulders, neck, wrists and knees with proper body alignment and exercises. July 15, 12:30-2:30 pm Yoga for Healing ($30 fee, space limited) This workshop will incorporate a focus on the conscious expansion of our capacity for breath, yoga poses to calm the nervous system, guided meditation and Reiki healing performed by the instructor. August 12, 12:30-2:30 pm
What is Lymphedema? Learn about the symptoms, risk reduction and treatment of Lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer treatment. At the DFCC we use the Perometer, a device not available at most hospitals, to assess limb volume for early detection of lymphedema. We offer free pre-operative assessments of limb volume to obtain a base line measurement that is used for post operative comparison to monitor for onset of swelling. August 16, 12:00-1:00 pm Introduction to Yoga A lecture and demonstration of what yoga is all about. More than just a physical exercise, yoga is an awakening of body, mind and spirit. September 16, 12:00-1:00 pm Understanding Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma from Diagnosis Through Treatment Co-Sponsored by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Providence Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center. September 29, 6:30-8:00 pm Yoga for Breast Cancer ($30 fee, space limited) Yoga for breast cancer patients will focus on breathing to expand the natural capacity for breath, learning yoga poses to open the shoulders, meditation, relaxation techniques and how to connect to your heart to soften the mind. Yoga therapy helps a person find harmony and balance from within. Our advanced technologies combined with complementary therapies provide customized treatments that foster outcomes above national averages for many types of cancers. The Cancer Center can coordinate all of a patient’s needs under one roof—everything from arc radiation to appearance concerns, from early detection to complementary therapies. Patients are able to control their treatment options through consults, self-referrals, clinical trials and second-opinion clinics. The center’s philosophy of healing the mind, the body and the spirit of each patient truly enables us to provide high-quality compassionate care to all.

Lisa Schwartz, MD is the Medical Director of Integrative Medicine at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center. Motivated by her patients’ use of complementary medicine she completed a masters degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine at Emperor’s College and an associate fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil. She is nationally board certified in radiation oncology, internal medicine, acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Dr. Schwartz offers integrative medicine consultations and advice on nutritional strategies, lifestyle changes, and complementary therapies that have an impact on a patient’s survival and quality of life.
