Information from Mr. LeBreton Attention Senior Parents: Please mark your calendars for the “Mandatory Senior Parent Meeting” on Wednesday, May 4 @ 7:00 P.M. We will review and answer questions about all the senior end-of-year events. You will also receive your 10 tickets to graduation at the meeting. Both parents are welcome, but at least one should attend. See you there.

From the Dean of Studies Friday, April 15th, was the end of the 5th Grading Period, which means we are in the final lap of classes before the end of the semester. Parents should have received the latest Grades by now, or you can see them online in the Aeries Gradebook. Anyone having difficulty accessing your student’s grades on Aeries is encouraged to contact our Tech Support at paent.help@providencehigh.org We are moving toward 2 weeks of Advanced Placement testing followed by the senior class Final Exams. Before we know it, the rest of the students will take their Final Exams and we will be preparing for Summer School. This is a reminder that Summer School begins here on campus June 27th. As was the case last summer, camps are also being offered, some of which begin as early as June 13th. Information is available on the PHS public website and in the front office. All students enrolled in 2011-2012 Honors, AP or advanced courses of Modern Language, Math, or Science will be assigned a “summer work packet” in order to be adequately prepared for those courses in the Fall. Beginning in June, teachers will be holding group orientation sessions during homeroom or after school to hand out this information to the students who requested these classes and who signed the Course Commitment Contract. Another way to complete the “summer work packet” is by enrolling in one of the related Enrichment courses offered at Providence during Summer School, including the Seminar for Advanced Placement US, Euro or World History. If you have questions or would like further clarification relating to anything academic, please contact claire.hickey@providencehigh.org.

The Providence Media Showcase It’s time once again for the Providence Media Showcase. Once each year, the best of student media works are presented at a state of the art venue and students are honored for their hard work and abundant creativity. This year, the showcase will be held in Theaters Two and Three in the heart of the Universal Studio lot (and not to be confused with the amphitheatre, ride attractions, City Walk, etc. at the top of the hill), followed by award presentations in the studio commissary. The date to remember is Saturday, May 14th. (Note that the school calendar distributed at the beginning of the school year indicates a different date. Of necessity, the calendar is published long before the studio gives us a confirmed date.) There will be two showings. The first will take place simultaneously in both theaters beginning at 1:30PM. This will be for freshmen and sophomore students and their guests. The evening showing will begin at 5:30PM. This showing will be for junior and senior media students, their guests, faculty and administrators. Because the evening is usually a sold out event, there will be a limit of four tickets per family for now. Additional tickets may be available after April 30th. Ticket prices are $10.00 for the afternoon show and $15.00 for the evening show. Don’t delay. Get your tickets early. All admissions to the studio lot will require a photo identification and inclusion of guest names on the studio security list. It will be necessary for all guests to afternoon or evening shows to purchase or reserve tickets in advance and to indicate the names of all attending. Sorry about the added complexity, but the studio has the usual security concerns and I am trying to avoid frustration and disappointment on the actual day. As usual, this event relies upon the generosity of Providence parents. If you would like to help with appetizers, desserts, sodas, bottled water or the countless other tasks of preparation that make the Showcase a memorable success each year, please contact Lisa Greenwood at lgreenwood@ppg-la.com. Service hour credits are available. I hope to see many of you there. I’m sure that we will all have a great time.

Attention freshmen, sophomore and junior parents: General Parent Meeting Our last general parent meeting for the school year is on Tuesday, May 19th from 7-8:30p.m. in the MPR. Freshmen and Sophomore parents will be able to pick up the EXPLORE and PLAN test results at this meeting. We have one of our alumni, Tony Marks, giving a presentation on Alcohol and Drug awareness. Mr. Marks works in the narcotics division of the Sheriff’s Department, and has a wealth of information to share. He will also be available to answer any questions or concerns parents may have. Parents who attend will receive 3 parent service hours per family.

Calendar Change The Parent Support Meeting scheduled for May 24th has been cancelled, please make a note of it.

General Parent Meeting May 10th Explore and Plan test results will be available for parents of 9th and 10th graders at this meeting.

College Counseling News Senior Parents, This is it! For most colleges and universities May 1 is the Candidate Reply Date. By that date your students must notify the colleges of their decision to attend or not. Hopefully, you and your students have had a chance to visit the campuses of the colleges to which they have been accepted. This physical presence on a campus can have a profound impact on the decision of whether to attend that college. Many times, students say, "It just feels right!" Your support and encouragement are vital in helping your students make a good choice. Based on discussions you have had and their own research, your students should be equipped to make informed, confident decisions. I am available to help in any way. Once the decision has been made:  Complete all forms  Pay any deposit required  Pay close attention to ALL DEADLINES Seniors should also:  Continue researching and applying for scholarships  Continue working for excellent grades - colleges will rescind acceptances if there is a significant drop in grades!!

Textbooks for 2011-2012 Providence High School, in seeking to upgrade student textbook resources in the coming years, will be moving into a partnership with Follett for the 2011-12 school year. As is the case in most schools, families will now be responsible for the purchase and resale of their student’s textbooks. Textbook purchasing and publishing information will be available through a link on the PHS public website connecting to the Follett Virtual Bookstore. Purchase options include: 

New



Used



Rental

Parents and students can resale textbooks on their own or through Follett. The link to Follett Virtual Bookstore will be up and running by the end of June, 2011 and will include the textbook list for each PHS course being offered along with resources and publishing information.
