SPRING 2012

Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation Making a Difference for 25 Years In 1987, Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation was established as a nonprofit organization to support the services, programs and patients of Providence TrinityCare Hospice. More than 40,000 patients and their families have been served throughout these years, and the foundation has raised more than $20 million to ensure no one is ever turned away because of their inability to pay or lack of insurance. Here is a sample of the many stories (names have been changed): • Eric was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor at age 6. He lived with his mother and two younger siblings. His mom worked very hard as a waitress but did not have health insurance. As a single mom, she was understandably overwhelmed as she struggled to make ends meet for her family, much less afford specialized medical care for Eric. Through the foundation, Eric was able to come home and experience the quality of life and care that every dying child deserves. • Mike was a veteran who wanted to live out his remaining days with his family on the East Coast. The foundation was able to fund his transportation back to South Carolina, as well as provide for oxygen during his trip, to be with his brother and sister-in-law at the end of his life. • John, a 17-year-old baseball player, was diagnosed with a rapidly growing form of bone cancer. He was in UCLA Medical Center and wanted to go home,

but he needed a special hospital bed to accommodate his larger frame and make him comfortable. The foundation was able to meet his needs. • Jim had to choose between paying his electric and heating bills or buying food. The foundation was able to pay his utility bills and provide him with gift certificates to purchase groceries.

We thank you, our friends, for 25 years of support and ask that you continue to give generously to our ever-growing programs and services. Together we can guarantee that each and every patient lives well and dies gently.

We need your help! Our specialized programs that call upon our expertise in end-of-life and palliative care make us unique. These programs would not exist without philanthropic support from our friends in the community. Please consider making a gift to help fund these programs. Your gift will enable us to continue this very important work.

Protect Your Loved Ones With an Up-to-Date Estate Plan Many of us know how vital it is to have an estate plan. But did you know that keeping it current can be just as crucial?

Preparing or updating a will and getting a comprehensive review of your estate plan are vital steps to your family’s financial security and peace of mind. If you die without a will, the laws of the state where you reside will determine how your property is divided among your closest surviving relatives. If you have a spouse and children, they may have to share part of your estate in proportions you wouldn’t have wanted. This can lead to family squabbles and serious financial consequences for your loved ones. An out-of-date will can cause similar problems. If major life events have occurred since you last reviewed your estate plan, you’ll need to meet with your estate planning attorney to ensure that your current wishes will be carried out. Don’t leave it up to the courts. Look over the items we’ve listed to the right to get you started.

How to Balance Supporting Our Work And Meeting Your Needs Do you ever feel torn between a desire to make a difference in the lives of others and the need to meet your own responsibilities and financial commitments? You’re hardly alone. Providing for your personal needs and supporting the good work of Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation need not be mutually exclusive goals. Consider two methods that fulfill both wishes.

Include Us in Your Will A bequest in your will or trust to TrinityCare is an easy way to make a difference without affecting your current cash flow. You can leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. When planning a future gift, it’s sometimes difficult to determine what size donation will make sense. Emergencies happen, and you need to make sure your family is financially taken care of first. Including a bequest of a percentage of your estate or a percentage of your residual estate ensures that your gift will remain proportionate to your estate size, no matter how it fluctuates over the years.

Consider the Benefits Of a Life Income Gift A life income arrangement, such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust, allows you to make a gift and, in return, receive payments for life. This type of plan can provide you with additional income during your retirement years or a steady income for a loved one. After your lifetime or that of a loved one, the remainder supports our valuable work, leaving a legacy for tomorrow.

Contact us for assistance in finding the most realistic way you can make a difference. Everyone’s circumstances vary, and we can help find the right gift for you. We compassionately enter the lives of individuals faced with the realities of suffering, loss, death and grief to offer expert care and education while respecting each person’s choices, values and beliefs.

Join the Legacy Circle With a Planned Gift Making a planned gift is a simple way to support our much-needed end-of-life and bereavement support programs for adults and children. Listed below are just a few of the many planned giving options: • A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract between a donor and Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation. A set donation is made, and the annuity pays the donor a fixed amount for the rest of their lives—simple, but so very helpful. • A bequest is a gift designated in a will or trust. Bequests are common, simple and easy. • Retirement plan assets such as IRAs, Keoghs or 401(k)s can also be designated to support Providence TrinityCare Hospice. If you would like to learn more about planned giving options, contact us at (310) 257-3535 or email barbara.roberts@providence.org. We can help find a gift that fits your charitable and financial goals, at no obligation.

One Board, One Mission Over the past year, the Board of Directors of Providence TrinityCare Hospice and the Board of Trustees of Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation have worked closely together on TrinityCare’s vision and mission for the future. Through this important work, the boards voted unanimously to consolidate our governance structure to create one board, overseeing the mission-driven work of both entities. This board will share the governance of our two corporations. While this board is a high-level policy board, the directors also lead sub-committees to advise senior management on shared strategy, highlighting several different areas of interest. The decision to merge our boards was made after careful deliberation, which included planning sessions and interviews of directors, trustees and leadership.
