Set your wedding up for success with tips from professionals in the industry By Abbie Lahmers
I
t’s easy to feel overwhelmed by well-meaning advice when you and yours start planning your special day, but where better to start than with tips straight from the source? We asked professionals across the wedding industry what the couples they’ve worked with wished they would have known when turning their vision into a reality. From ordering the invitations to chartering a honeymoon voyage, and everything in between, here’s what they had to say.
TIMING THE INVITATIONS “ We most commonly get asked ‘ When should I send my invitations out ?’ The answer to that question can var y depending on your venue requirements, catering deadlines, or hotel room blocks, but in general, once save-the-dates have gone out, we tell our clients that a good mail date for invitations is 10 weeks prior to your wedding date, with a R SVP date that is six weeks prior to your wedding date. This schedule gives your invitations time to reach their destination, time for your g uests to review hotel and travel options, and reply. A six-week R SVP date gives your vendors enough time with your final headcount to make all the necessar y arrangements and allows you ample time to create your seating chart.” —Danielle McCarthy and Ellen PJ Kelly, owners, Champagne and Ink Newport, ChampagneAndInk.com
“Start with a base budget and color scheme, allowing the consultation process to g uide you to ward a design you truly love. By doing so, you can create a stunning and memorable wedding that reflects your unique style and stays within your budget. Leading with the fear of cost often leads to misconceptions about what is actually less expensive. For example, we have seen couples ask for ‘greens only’ thinking they’re saving money. In reality, certain greens, especially eucalyptus, can be quite expensive.” —Susan Falso, owner, Cherr yhill Flowers Johnston, Smithfield, and Coventry, CherryHillFlower.org

FINDING THE DREAM DRESS “Wedding gowns can take anywhere from 12 weeks to six months to come in, so plan in advance. By a year out, you should be looking at the options and by nine months, you want to be ready to select “the one.” Before your appointments, do your homework: know what designers a boutique carries, their price points, and have some photos of gowns you love. This will help guide the conversations with your stylist and act as a jumping-off point. Once you’re there, keep an open mind. Try on at least one dress of each silhouette and style. You might be surprised by what you love! This day is really supposed to be about you and your partner so don’t lose that in the process. What brings you joy and makes you smile is what you should go with. There aren’t any rules.” —Katie Wadhams, owner, Lovely Bride Providence LovelyBride.com
TRUSTING YOUR VENUE EVENT TEAM
BIDDING BON VOYAGE
Browse gowns online from Lovely Bride before scheduling a consultation at their Providence store
“ The most common piece of advice I offer is to prioritize what you and your partner really want to experience and enjoy on your honeymoon, instead of getting too caught up in what other people are doing or what you think you ‘should’ do. It’s your honeymoon, after all, and you want it to be a memorable and meaningful experience for both of you. Additionally, many couples wish they knew how important it is to plan and book things early, as popular honeymoon destinations and accommodations can fill up quickly, especially during the peak travel season.” —Don Fuchs Jr., travel advisor, Smooth Sailings Cruise Planners Coventry, Smooth-Sailings.com

“Be comfortable with the event team at your selected venue, so that you feel confident explaining what you do and do not want at your wedding. Each couple has an individual aspect that is most important to them, such as outdoor facilities, a large dance floor, great food, reasonable pricing , and memorable scenery for photography. The venue team should prioritize their specific needs to ensure that their wedding will be one to remember.” —Michele Heroux , business manager, Twelve Acres Smithfield, TwelveAcresBanquet.com

Looking to welcome a new furr y friend into your home ? Adopt, don’t shop! Shelters across the state have dogs and cats ready to find their forever homes. Here are three pets ready to meet you, or reach out to the shelters to learn about even more adoptees.
Rosie
Billy
Just over two years old, Rosie is a stunning tri-color mixed-breed girl with a smile that will steal your heart. She loves to explore and would make a great hiking partner! Though playful and active, she also enjoys snuggling with a human companion who’s patient and loving. Rosie has been cooped up in the shelter for a while, so it may take a few visits to get to know her.
This sharply dressed, one-year-old tuxedo cat is longing for your love and affection. His eyes sparkle with excitement when you meet him and once he knows you, he’s a big softie and will be your shadow, especially if you have treats on hand. Billy is looking for an adult home or a home with older cat-savvy children who will enjoy his loyal companionship.
If you have been thinking of adopting or if you know of an animal in need, please contact Karen directly at animaltalk1920@gmail.com.

B2B Retail & Luxury Consignment Boutique What it is: A women’s clothing shop specializing in new and used designer brands.
W h e re i t i s : On Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston, look for the pink sign above the shop or the alluring window displays.
B2B Retail & Luxury Consignment Boutique, or as the owners and sisters Lisa Ricci-DiSarro and Maria CP Russo recently renamed it, “B2B,” started as a consignment boutique for luxury clothing and accessories; three years later, it expanded to include retail finds as well. All inventory – whether new or “like brand new” – is high-end designer or designer inspired. While authentic famous maker handbags are the shop’s bestseller – “We have so many to choose from, we have to keep adding shelves,” says Ricci-DiSarro – the boutique also boasts over 200 gowns and dresses in their formal wear department, which includes footwear. The popular spot has lots going on with remodeling for new inventory, and is closed Sunday through Tuesday through March. That still leaves plenty of days to visit, and check in to learn about Sip & Shop parties, sales, and more. “The feedback we continuously hear is that B2B is a fun, happy, goodvibe place to shop,” the sisters say. “This is exactly what we strive to achieve.”

Cozy at home in Providence
In December we put a call out to all Rhode Island lovebirds to share their personal love stories for our first-ever Ocean State Love Story Contest. Entrants vied for the opportunity to be featured in this issue, and win a pair of Teal Hydrafacials from the Center for Medical Aesthetics (a $500 value), plus other prizes. We are happy to announce that our team of judges selected Maya Byrne and Weston de Lomba of Providence for their statewide tale and commitment to each other and Little Rhody. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this contest a success!

aya Byrne and her fiancé, Weston de Lomba share a love stor y rooted in their Rhode Island heritage. Byrne, a Newport native, and de Lomba, from Cranston, first connected in October 2018 while working as medical scribes at Rhode Island Hospital’s Emergency Department. Starting as friends, their romantic journey officially began in 2020. One evening , de Lomba planned to bring oysters to Byrne’s apartment. Opting for a picturesque setting instead, they brought the oysters to India Point Park, where de Lomba expertly shucked them. During the conversation, Byrne jokingly asked, “Are you going to kiss me now ?” To their joy, a perfectly timed firework illuminated the park as they shared a first smooch, marking a magical moment that sealed the fate of their relationship.

Following this, Byrne pursued an accelerated nursing program, and de Lomba set out on the path to medical school. By 2022, she became an RN at Newport Hospital, while he earned acceptance to Brown for medical school. The couple embarked on their next chapter, settling into a cozy one-bedroom apartment on the East Side of Providence and getting a cat. Their love story reached new heights in July during an enchanting vacation in Japan, where de Lomba surprised Byrne with a proposal. The unexpected gesture, coupled with the fact that he’d brought the engagement ring across the globe, left her in awe. Currently, the happy couple is eagerly planning their wedding at a private venue in Jamestown, set for Aug ust 2025. With no intentions of leaving Rhode Island, except for occasional vacations, the couple is thrilled about the future.

Rules of Engagement A local wedding photographer shares the ins and outs of finding an officiant and making the ceremony your own By Meaghan D’Abrosca
20
Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
BUT FIRST, MARRIAGE LICENSE Before scribing the perfect vows, gather up the needed documentation and apply for your marriage license. Find everything you need to know online, and if you have any questions, call the clerk’s office in the city or town hall where you’re applying. Health.RI.gov/records/about/marriagelicenses/ To apply for a One Day Marriage Officiant Certification, visit Services.SOS.RI.gov/OneDay/OneDayCertificate
D’Abrosca shares one of her favorite ceremony moments, which may spark inspiration: “One of the brides’ personal vows began with a story of how their partner was always dying to read what they had written about her in their journal. Then, they proceeded to read a passage that they wrote shortly after their first date. It described how they knew she was the one they were going to marry and how she made them feel a kind of love and happiness that they didn’t know was possible. Simple yet heartfelt, your vows don’t need to be long and flowery (unless that’s your jam) – they just have to be you.”
B
ig wedding, small wedding, micro wedding, elopement – no matter how you celebrate it, everyone getting married needs to make it official with a ceremony. And as long as you’re saying “I do” in Rhode Island (as opposed to the very few states that allow you to self-solemnize your nuptials), you’ll need to select someone to officiate. If you’re religious, the obvious choice is asking your minister, rabbi, or leader of your place of worship to officiate, but for couples looking for an alternative to a religious ceremony, one option is hiring a professional officiant or justice of the peace, a great choice for convenience and guidance. Because they’re professionals by trade, they’ll know how to fill out and file your marriage license, provide detailed questionnaires to craft a personalized ceremony for you, and sometimes even run your rehearsal for you, all for a fee. No hired officiant could ever know you and your story quite like a close friend or family member, so for the couple seeking a truly personalized ceremony, why not ask someone who knows you best? Having someone close to you officiate is a huge honor and responsibility. If you decide to go this route, make sure that, first, you know that this person is very comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. Then, once you’ve made your choice, it’s time to get them certified! Luckily, Rhode Island makes it easy – all you have to do is apply online via the Secretary of State’s website for a One Day Marriage Officiant Certification. You’ll need your marriage license on hand to do this so make sure you have that already. Once you’ve filed that, you’re good to go, right? Not quite. You’re also going to need to design your ceremony – though it’s not as daunting as it sounds. A quick online search for ceremony scripts reveals everything from long to short and sweet services, “I-do” scripts, readings, and even songs to walk down the aisle to – it can be a lot to sift through. The main things that almost every wedding ceremony should have are a short story or introduction about the couple, vows, and a ring exchange. Even if you do nothing else to jazz it up,
FEBRUARY 2024 | HeyRhody.com
CUSTOMS, RITUALS, AND TRADITIONS If it resonates with you and is culturally and spiritually appropriate to you and your SO, here are a few traditional elements you may consider weaving into your ceremony: •
Giving a toast
•
Readings (such as poems)
•
Performing a song
•
Lighting a unity candle
•
Irish: Ring warming
•
African-American: Jumping the broom
•
Celtic: Handfasting
•
Jewish: Breaking of the glass
your vows are a great way to make it your own. Are you a private couple? Consider the “repeat after me” vows. More sentimental and love surprises? Try writing your own. If you’re considering personal vows but are afraid you won’t be present enough to actually register what your partner is saying, write your vows together in advance and practice them. Once you decide which elements are important to you, research some sample scripts, put everything in an order that feels good to you, and practice it with your officiant – a few times – you’re ready to be wed!
Wedding photographer Meaghan D’Abrosca blogs about “How to Craft a Unique to You Wedding Ceremony,” with tips from her own wedding planning experience, and more on her website RhodeTripperPhotography.com, along with a workbook at RhodeTripperPhotography.com/ ceremony-design-workbook.

FUNKY FLOURI S HE S “With the venue being on the smaller side, we decided to focus on adding interest in hanging form, as opposed to installs on the ground and tables. Leah sourced some super fun disco balls and we added in lots of colorful hanging carnation garlands, as well as arrangements on the disco balls. The tables we kept more minimal, but used funky colored glass bud vases with minimal, unique stems, and color coordinated taper candles that matched her invitation suite! Leah and Ed’s wedding was truly one for the books!” — Lorinda Constant Owner & Lead Floral Designer, Sweet Talk Floral SweetTalkFloral.com

“
ife is what happens when you’re busy making other plans,” is a wise old quote often attributed to singer-song writer John Lennon, and it could easily be the motto of the wedding of Leah and Ed Pisari of Providence. Once the couple had set their date, The Wayfinder in Newport was chosen as the venue. The hotel – which had recently undergone a transformation in 2020 – imbued a mid-centur y modern aesthetic, which appealed to the design-minded couple. The lobby had unique features like a dark blue ceiling , the nearby lounge featured a groovy central firepit in tiger lily orange, and the owners took pride in featuring the work of local artists totaling 1,000 pieces. The groove extended to its onsite restaurant Nomi Park, which had quickly become an “it” place for burgers and more. “ We wouldn’t need to do much,” says Leah of the setting made for a graphic designer’s big day.

Our florist saved our wedding!
Two and half months before the wedding , headlines were ablaze with reports that The Wayfinder had succumbed to an overnight four-alarm fire, the property had been g utted – and so it seemed – Pisari’s dream wedding. After 24 hours of brooding time, the brideto -be knew she had to begin contacting her list of wedding vendors to cancel, and fortunately started by calling Lorinda Constant of Providence-based Sweet Talk Florals. “Once Leah told me that her original venue had burned down, I immediately went into fix-it mode,” said Constant, a plucky creative whose actions live up to her surname. “Knowing that the couple wanted a more unique venue experience, I had luckily just worked at Dye House – which was newly opened – and realized it could be the perfect solution.”

“Lorinda saved the wedding,” says Pisari, who also credits her many vendors for being nimble, supportive, and adaptive. “The Wayfinder burned down on Monday and we had Dye House by Thursday,” says Pisari of the former Olneyville textile mill reimagined as a boutique hotel and event space that would now be the wedding and reception location. “I went from planning a Newport wedding to planning a Providence wedding. So many things had to change.” Pisari even took

a second look at her gown, which never seemed to fit quite right even after alterations, which led her to find the blush pink dress she purchased online last-minute, and adored. Pisari, who describes herself as “able to make anything ,” looked at the pivot like a contractor producing an art installation or editorial dinner. Describing Dye House as a “white cube,” she offers that it provided a blank canvas for her to develop a palette of five signature colors
(light blue, dark blue, pink, red, yellow), a font family, and style guide which informed choices from candles to stationery. Inspired by a TikTok video, ideas of disco balls and florals emerged. In a short time frame, there were multiple meetings with vendors (most of which were done via Zoom due to COVID restrictions) and site visits, and she admits that her floral budget tripled. “I didn’t think of myself as a DIY bride but I turned into one.” FEBRUARY 2024 | HeyRhody.com

“Leah and Ed had the most incredible wedding. Two Gals set up our portable bar in the courtyard for cocktail hour. The vibe of the evening was electric! 401 Gourmet did not disappoint with their presentation of deliciousness! Per the bride’s request, we prepared a fresh-brewed peach iced tea and our signature Cucumber Ginger Cocktail to accompany the full bar offerings. One week before the wedding , Ed had an unexpected stroke. As Pisari took care of her fiance, his father constructed a “chuppah” canopy from copper tubing for the couple to be married beneath – a tradition at Jewish weddings symbolizing the home the couple will build together. As Ed recuperated, vendors continued to work their magic with installations over four days, coordinating the arrival of rented furniture, hanging garlands and disco balls, and Pisari busily etching keychains as place cards and favors – a project carried over from The Wayfinder.

DI Y AT DYE “When I first met Leah and Ed, and heard about their need to change venues, I knew the most I could do for them was help be a place that said ‘yes’ to the things they wanted to do. We were able to give them access to Dye House via a virtual key and allow them to walk the space on their own with their friends, family, and creatives who were bringing their vision to life. Having access to the space on demand is such a huge help for couples who are taking a more DIY approach, and we really love the ability to do that.” — Kara E. She came to us with a fairly clear idea of what she was looking to print and we were able to work together to find just the right papers, ink colors, and print methods to manifest that vision. Leah and Ed had some big setbacks and we ended up reprinting a few pieces as the venue changed last-minute. On the big day, all of the pieces and pivots came together, resulting in a day that was heartfelt, colorful, and unique to the couple. “Our florist saved our wedding. Two Gals Cocktails made dietar y changes after Ed’s stroke, Dye House let us work on the build days prior, Ellie’s created the perfect cake – and treated us to a cake on our first anniversar y,” says Pisari, who still feels awestruck by ever ything. “Designing our wedding was truly a crazy project bringing together all of my interests in art, design, and crafting. Thank you to ever y vendor and friend who helped put it all together. It ended up being a WaterFire weekend so we were able to show off Providence,” says Pisari. “It was perfect.” Learn more about Pisari and her work at LeahMiriam.com

“Adapting is in our wheelhouse so we made sure we were as helpful as possible while they switched gears. We were able to pick back up planning with their tasting and continued developing their cake design. Their main buzzwords from the beginning were ‘fun, colorful, and electric,’ and their design evolved from borders adorned with colorful sprinkles to an abstract painted look with pops of fresh and painted flowers. Finally, they landed on a buttercream botanical floral print with the colors highlighting the cake flavors themselves, including raspberr y, blueberr y, and elderflower.” — Stephanie Pajak, Ellie’s Catering & Events Leader, Gracie’s Ventures Providence, ElliesProv.com

W
hen someone announces they’re engaged, suddenly there are many events to be planned, including a bridal shower. This gathering , generally thrown by the maid/matron of honor, is a celebration of the brideto -be. Along with light-hearted advice, g uests are expected to bring gifts to help the couple feather their nest in this tradition that dates back to communities providing an alternative to the dowr y system.
38
Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
As with any party, establishing a theme at the get-go will help with selections going forward. In November, BRIDES magazine in collaboration with Minted Weddings marketplace, announced Marseille Bleu as the 2024 Wedding Color of the Year. Articles in the hue named after the French coastal city can also ser ve as that something blue. While hydrangeas are a summer flower in Rhode Island, they are available all year to florists, so harkening July even on a snowy afternoon shouldn’t be an issue.
CUPCAKES While the food ser ved will depend on the venue – ever ything from pot-luck at a home to catered at a countr y club or a selected menu from a cafe – it’s always nice to have dessert. Cupcakes decorated with piped frosting to resemble hydrangeas are perfect for extending the theme beyond the vase.
COOKIES Specialty cookies decorated with the bride’s initials or topped with a cluster of confectionery petals, along with shapes like engagement rings and wedding bands, are a sweet touch, and best of all, so easy to grab and eat! FEBRUARY 2024 | HeyRhody.com

The East Greenwich-based fashion expert offers a blueprint for men’s wedding and honeymoon looks By Ruthie Wood
Any tips on best looks for grooms? I generally recommend a vest – for a suit or tuxedo – it elevates the entire look and separates the groom from the groomsmen. Plus, during the wedding , you can remove the jacket and still look dressed and put together. What is your advice for what to wear as a guest? Dress to celebrate! You aren’t going to a bank or an office party ; this is the time to have a little fun with your clothes and style. Always look to the invitation for what the tone for the wedding is. Is it more formal/black-tie, or black-tie op tional? Is it a daytime wedding outside, on the beach, or in a barn? All of these clues will dictate what you wear. For evening , wear a darker suit; for daytime, something brighter or light colored. Thoughts on ties and socks? Picking a tie all depends on the clues listed above. Is a tie even necessar y ? These days more often than not they are not worn. If you are not wearing a tie with a sports jacket, then make sure to have a pocket square in the breast pocket. Picking a sock is completely up to you. Have a blast with your sock choice or keep it tonal, no rules apply ! Any ideas for winter grooms packing for tropical honeymoons? Floral lightweight shirts, cotton stretch shorts, cashmere, and organic cotton terry loop short sets with hoodies have all sold very well. This was our first time bringing cruise wear into Blueprint 5 and we’ve had a very positive response from our clients. I will repeat a cruisewear selection in the future. What are good things to know before visiting a tailor for the first time? Be sure that any clothing you bring to be tailored has been professionally cleaned beforehand ; it’s the polite thing to do. If you’re unsure of what needs to be done, ask for the tailor’s opinion. Allow time : walking into a tailor shop and expecting a finished product the next day is unrealistic. Good alterations take time ; allow one to two weeks at least.

Local boutique owners dish on dressing the mother of the bride By Callie Bisset
W
e all hear about brides saying “yes” to the dress, but what about mom? Mothers are left without a set dress code, which can be both freeing and intimidating. Length, fit, style, and color are all important factors to consider, and some moms worry about taking away from the bride’s big moment. It’s not always clear what the socially appropriate outfit is for mothers of the bride and groom. So what exactly should a mother of the bride wear ? “An appropriate style is subjective,” says

Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
Stefania Carmosino Spas, who co-owns Stefania’s Boutique in Cranston with her mother Antoinette. “Some mothers love simplicity, and some prefer a more ornate style.” Kate Spinella, owner of Ivory, A Bridal Boutique in East Greenwich, shares that one of the first questions they ask a mother is whether or not she has inspiration or ideas that come from the bride. “When a bride or future daughter-inlaw comes shopping , they usually say that they want the mother to be happy and comfortable,” says Spinella. “Mothers want to look their best,
and be fashionable, no matter their size. We have carefully curated our gown selection to keep our mothers looking young and elegant.” Regarding color, Spinella maintains, “there are no color rules for mothers except they should not wear any shade of ivory or white.” She also notes that popular choices tend to be either neutrals or navy. Alternately, Spas shares that some brides choose to include the mothers in different shades of the wedding color palette while others opt for a contrasting hue to coordinate with the wedding party but stand out from the bridesmaids.

When it comes to length, Spas recommends a floor-length style of dress to distinguish the mother as a member of the wedding party and not simply a guest. Spinella echoes this sentiment: “In our store, we sell almost all floor-length gowns. As the mother of the bride/ groom, we want them to stand out, and look and feel their best. We always say mothers should not look like just another guest at the wedding since their role is so important in the overall event.” A shopping trip together is the ideal way to ensure that both mother and bride are happy with mom’s attire. Bride-tobe Hayley Pereira of Johnston and her mom Gail are in the process of doing just that. With Pereira’s upcoming September wedding, the duo is seeking a dress with earthy tones to complement – not match – the autumnal palette of the bridal party. “She always asks for my opinions on outfits, especially for events,” says Pereira. “It’s only natural to do this together.”

f a cocktail at The Café is one act in a play, with a cast of hyper-local ingredients starring in each and the stage set for an enchanting night out, the story being told can only be a homage to Westerly. The bar and restaurant is a collaboration with nonprofit arts center The UNITED Theatre, so this analogy isn’t a reach – nods to current productions often find their way onto the menu – but it’s the real-life stories of the town thoughtfully teased into some of The Café’s beverages that keep locals coming back.

“Food and drink are the canvas that we paint on, but we’re really in the business of people, whether that’s our staff, our g uests, anybody that walks through our doors – we tr y to meet them where they are and elevate their day,” says manager Stephen Corrigan. Owners Chuck Royce and Dan King opened The Café during early winter of 2021, in the grips of the Omicron variant of COVID, but that didn’t keep Corrigan from his commitment to intentionality, exceptionality, and balance. “ We have quite a distinct look and feel here at The Café. It’s sort of a golden era Hollywood type of bistro where stars are treated like locals and locals are treated like stars,” Corrigan continues. He gestures to the art on the walls, classic ambiance of the interior, and ever yday life of downtown Westerly buzzing just beyond the window, his enthusiasm palpable. For a man who devises new cocktail ideas while stuck in traffic on I-95 and sourced artisan cr ystallike ice for the I Can See Clearly Now series of perfectly clear beverages beckoning spring , Corrigan’s overseeing of The Café is kismet. Working alongside bar super visors Virginia Graham and Kylie Sarosi, Corrigan brings a drink program that’s “creative but not simply for the sake of being creative” and poses each new libation against the classics. “ We always tr y to bring it back and say, ‘does this fit what we’re doing here ? Does it make sense within the context of The Café ?’” he explains. It only follows that Corrigan, originally from the Hudson River Valley area of New York, would take his first encounter with soupy – the soppressata of Westerly legends – and make a cocktail out of it. With recipes brought over from Italy, soupy is a tradition that Tim Cotter of The UNITED is familiar with. “Ever ybody gets together with big jugs of wine and they spend hours making this sausage and then cure it by

hanging it from the rafters in the basement because the temperature’s perfect and it hardens and cures. Around Easter, they break it out and ever ybody gives away their soupy to their friends,” Cotter explains. “I thought, how do we make the most iconic Westerly cocktail ever?” says Corrigon, whose soupy pilgrimage brought him to Dippers Packing , where Michael Dipollino gave him uncured sausage to experiment with. Corrigan had the idea to fat-wash it with bourbon, a process of combining any fat with any spirit, letting it sit refrigerated until the fat separates, and then straining it through coffee filters to remove any oiliness, essentially creating an infusion. After a few tries, he and the bar team found a winner that even garnered praise from Governor Dan McKee when he paid a visit. Calling on a classic, Dipper’s Sipper is a play on an Old Fashioned. “It’s got a little spice, and you get that little bit of sweetness from the sugar,” he explains, “then the citrus of the orange bitters and spice from the soupy start to come through on the finish.” Through his unofficial Rhode Island schooling , Corrigan also turned the state drink into a cocktail – the Little Rhody is a boozy coffee milk using Dave’s Coffee Syrup, espresso beans, vanilla-infused vodka, and milk. Much like a visit to the theater, other drinks inspire escapism. An espresso martini with chicor y coffee is a trip to Cafe du Monde in the French Quarter, and, nodding to a galler y show that ran through last month featuring the works of Barbara Shermund, a Dorothy Parker-inspired martini-esque cocktail. Corrigan credits the energ y, talent, and collaboration of his bar team, front-ofhouse manager Lisa Christina, and executive chef Brandon Gale to carr y out The Café’s refined vision. “I have this incredible team. I consider myself the luckiest man in Rhode Island,” says Corrigan with a laugh. “And I say it over the bar ever y night. It’s a real privilege. This town is something really special and so we really tr y to celebrate it.”

signature cocktail (or mocktail!) is just one of many ways couples can put their personality on full display during their nuptials. Behind clever drink names harkening back to favorite memories together or even their pets’ names, the ingredients can reflect the theme and color palette of the ceremony, too. Here’s two recipes developed by the pros, which are perfect for clinking glasses on the big day, or may spark inspo for your own creative concoction.
“For weddings, we develop personalized cocktails that are a true reflection of our couples’ love. Not only does it elevate the bar ser vice, but it also gives g uests a taste that lingers in their memories long after the celebration ends. Whether it’s sweet and spicy, bold and balanced, or simply named after your fur babies, allow your cocktails to tell a stor y that truly encapsulates the essence of your special day !”

“When we’re making cocktails, we like to call upon memories to tell stories. Our advice to couples looking for signature cocktails for their wedding, bridal shower, and other romantic events is to call upon memories you’ve made growing as a couple together. Where was your fourth date? What did you guys eat? Did you learn something new about your partner then? Tie in a core flavor you enjoyed that day and use it to bring you right back to that important memory.”

long with display cases of mini banana breads, scones, cupcakes, and other fresh-baked goods – and New Har vest coffee at the ready – for walk-in customers to enjoy, what Syroya’s Bakery is perhaps best known for is luscious cakes. Syroya Eugene opened her brick-and-mortar shop in North Providence just over a year ago, but she’s not new to crafting artisan sweets perfect for celebrating love. Eugene’s signature cakes come in flavors like strawberry crunch and chocolate deluxe Heath Bar. Whether you’re looking for traditional buttercream and fondant applied in her intricately decorated custom designs for your wedding guests or a novelty cake, Eugene’s masterpieces have included everything from winter wonderland- to crawfish boil-themed cakes. “A lot of my clients give me the theme or the colors and the inspirations, and they allow me to be creative with how I design things,” she says. “Now that I’ve built up a reputation with many of them, I’m able to kind of freestyle with what they give me.” Before following her sweet passion, Eugene worked for many years as a clinical laboratory scientist. “[Baking ] was an outlet for me outside of my regular job,” she says. “I liked baking from scratch because I like to know what’s in my food.” She initially launched her business as a part-time operation with support from Warren food incubator Hope & Main. Eugene describes the move as “a leap of faith” and says she was motivated by the opportunity to be creative at work. “I started at Hope & Main in 2016, and they helped me license my business and learn how to run a food business,” she says. “Then I went back to work full-time in the lab for personal reasons. I still made cakes here and there for friends and family, but baking was a passion of mine that I really wanted to pursue.” Eugene has since left the lab and now runs her business (which also includes catering ) full time. There are some similarities between the two professions, she says, including the importance of staying organized and being precise. “With

hode Island has a history of food trucks reaching all the way back to 1872, and in recent years, food truck catering for bites, meals, or desserts has been a booming trend for events, including non-traditional weddings. But the trucks don’t have to be just for food, or just for the wedding night. Three women – Gianna Grande, Jill Lucena, and Chelsea Smith – are among those capitalizing on convenience by creating businesses ready to bring the fun to special gatherings, including stag dos, bridal showers, and bachelorette parties.

Gianna Grande’s micro version of a dessert truck is a peddler cart named The Biscotti Bar. The idea was born out of a love of the family tradition of baking over a dozen different kinds of cookies and crafting the assortment into trays around the holidays. “Biscotti means twice baked. It is baked once in a loaf, then sliced, and baked again on its side.” Pistachio, almond, and oatmeal chocolate chip are her best-selling flavors, but the bar also offers other types of Italian cookies to choose from – including wine biscuits – a Grande favorite; all are baked with help from her mother and sister. Hosts can order a personalized Italian cookie bar and have cookie bags as party favors. North Providence, TheBiscottiBar.square.site
BESPOKE BRACELETS After 20 years of handcrafting jewelry from sea glass to upcycled materials, Jill Lucena created Boho Bead Bar in July of 2023 to share the experience of “working with color and blending materials to create unique, meaningful pieces,” she explains. The bead bar – an eight-foot-long table with Lucena at the helm, crafting bracelets in front of guests’ eyes – allows party-goers to design their own bracelet, from wire to beads, and watch it be made in under three minutes via a bead spinner. It’s a chance to have “family and friends laughing and creating together,” Lucena says, and at the end of the night, all

Solid Gold Wedding Band

ne of the most critical decisions that couples make in the months leading up to their wedding is their choice of music. Although some opt for a DJ experience, there’s no doubt a good live wedding band creates memories that last a lifetime. In their role as emcee of the party, the wedding band’s responsibility is twofold – to make sure everyone is entertained and to manage the various stages of the hours-long event. Take It to the Bridge is a Rhode Island wedding band that regularly goes above and beyond for the happy couple. Post-pandemic, they’ve been especially busy. “Exciting times, lots of weddings happening,” says Greg Marcotte, guitarist and general manager of the seven-piece act. Although they didn’t start out playing weddings, Take It to the Bridge will celebrate their 10th anniversary this year. Marcotte explains that he met his wife Christyn while playing in the Rhode Island National Guard’s 88th Army Band. “We first played in an original band called Sauce,” he explains. Next came adding members and playing around the state
as a cover band for several years, when a close friend asked them to perform at his wedding. The band, newly minted as Take It to the Bridge, never looked back and these days, plays about 40 weddings a year. When it comes to booking a band for your event, Marcotte recommends planning early. “We typically book about six months to a year out,” he says. “We have a repertoire of over 200 songs for the couple to go through and choose from. We also learn up to three new songs they request, which is a lot of fun for the band; we add songs to our repertoire every year. John Richards is our emcee, and he is fantastic. We offer a full day of services; for the ceremony, we have instrumental guitar or DJ services, we do the cocktail hour, and we run the reception where we do introductions, speeches, and then perform after dinner.” Whether you decide to go the wedding band or DJ route, Marcotte advises couples to give it some thought. “Think about the atmosphere you want to create. A lot of people don’t necessarily think about the band first, but it does tend to become a big part of the night. We provide that
unforgettable performance feeling. There’s no match for what a band can do. We remember every wedding we play, and they tend to remember us. It’s a fun thing all around.” There is no standard demographic at a typical wedding. With guests of all ages and backgrounds, the wedding band’s job is to play for everyone. Take It to the Bridge plays everything from country to disco with “parent dance” songs like “My Little Girl,” by Tim McGraw, and “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts among the most requested. “ We’re able to resonate with young and old,” says Marcotte. “ We play the top hits of the past 10 decades; we’re really trying to bring everyone together on the dance floor. In terms of our music, we love bridging songs together, sometimes you’ll notice four songs in one. There’s a lot of genuine fun happening with the musicians interacting with the crowd, which is pretty neat.” Take It to the Bridge plays out in public regularly, so couples can sample the band at local clubs, restaurants, and breweries. Buoys “escort” guests to tables at Castle Hill Inn
O
nce you enter the wild whirlwind of wedding planning, you encounter a whole new set of jargon. For example: a bathroom basket is an expected vessel packed with assorted toiletries for guests, placed in venue restrooms, assembled by someone in the wedding party. There’s the first look: a private staged moment photographed of

the couple just prior to marching down the aisle. Then there’s the escort wall – for this explanation we turned to the expert, Julia Darigan, sales manager at Ryan Designs, a firm based in West Warwick specializing in transforming spaces. “An escort wall is typically interactive by providing a tangible element for guests to take with them,” Darigan begins. “Sometimes, the item
used as the escort card that lists the guest’s name and table assignment can even double as wedding favors for a creative and budget-friendly gift. The escort card or token is generally something meaningful to the couple that they would like to share with their loved ones, or it simply matches their wedding’s aesthetic or theme.” Darigan describes the structure as an “elegant and FEBRUARY 2024 | HeyRhody.com

sophisticated large-scale display that elevates the standard wedding seating chart.” Escort walls are often created with the help of a designer who can best understand their client’s overall style, the couple’s love story and history, and their vision of how they would ultimately like to welcome their guests to their wedding ; a crafty couple might try a DIY approach. The display is usually placed at the entrance of the venue or reception space. “This is a fun and creative way for the couples to express their own unique personality and style,” says Darigan. The process at Ryan Designs begins by creating the foundation of the wall by selecting the size, shape, and structure, including a custom paint color or wallpaper. Once couples have decided what type of escort card they would like to use, the brainstorming begins with options like placing cards on shelving, linked to hooks, or with something as simple as a clear glue-dot for a seamless invisible attachment. Next, Ryan Designs assist clients with designing, building, and installing (and disassembling ) the structure at their venue, while the wedding planner or day-of-coordinator is responsible for supplying and attaching the escort cards to the wall. “We always recommend adding floral arrangements and candle lanterns along the footing of the wall to create a finished look,” says Darigan. So, do clients keep the wall? Says Darigan, “Our clients usually keep any keepsakes, favors, stationery, or personalized decor associated with their specific event – although not the wall itself !” FEBRUARY 2024 | HeyRhody.com
