will organize a display of items so that parents who may not be able to afford Christmas gifts for their children can make selections. “I’m very thankful to be born into a culture that appreciates the gift of sharing ,” says Baker. “Today, many Native artists depend on events like Nikommo to supplement their income, and I look forward to being among them and providing the opportunity through Tomaquag’s events to display and sell their beautiful creations.”

Shoppers may find items such as beadwork, handmade tools, photographs, prints, baskets, and corn husk dolls at the market. “We’re in a smaller space than last year,” says Baker. “Some of our artists will have to share tables, but sharing is what Nikommo is all about!” Nikommo is open to the public and takes place 12-4pm on December 2. For more details, visit TomaquagMuseum.org.

O

n December 2, Tomaquag Museum will host its 64th annual Nikommo at the Jonnycake Center of Westerly. Chr ystal Mars Baker, the museum’s education manager who is responsible for planning the free event, describes it as an open house. “ There will be an art market where people can shop and sup port local Indigenous artists, and there will be stories by Indigenous authors playing on a video loop for all to enjoy,” she says. Narragansett people have taken part in Nikommo celebrations since time immemorial. Baker compares the original means of celebrating Nikommo to a “giveaway.” “Historically, it involved providing furs, tools, and food – anything needed to run a home – to elders and others who could no longer pro vide for themselves,” she explains. “ The community took care of their needs to make sure no one went without.” Traditionally members of the Narragansett tribe participated in Nikommo feasts many times throughout the year as part of their 13 thanksgiving celebrations, one recognized for each moon cycle. “People gathered at these thanksgiving ceremonies to show gratitude for Creator’s gifts,” Baker explained. “Drumming and dancing was ver y much a part of these ceremonies, and at many of our thanksgivings, a Nikommo could occur as well.” As Narragansett people began to assimilate with Christians and be influenced by Christian culture, they condensed their many Nikommo celebrations into one that takes place during the Christmas season. This year, in the full spirit of providing for others, those who attend Tomaquag’s free event are asked to donate a toy, book, coat, or other gift appropriate for a child. “The museum will give these items to the Jonnycake Center so that they can share them with Indigenous families in need,” says Baker. ou see the homeless walk the street, and they want to be heard but no one is listening. You just have to open your heart, give, and love,” says Nellie Gaye, founder of nonprofit One Less Worr y. Having experienced homelessness in Liberia when she was 11 years old, Gaye was motivated to make it her life mission to help others and now ser ves fresh, warm meals in Providence, operating out of Ebenezer Baptist Church. One Less Worr y has been running since October 2021, feeding up to 150 people ever y Tuesday. It all started when Gaye was working in the detox unit at Roger Williams Medical Center as a nursing specialist and found her patients in need of more care than ever. She started donating used clothes to patients to wear once they were discharged. “I relate to them by looking at my life as

an 11-year-old child, and I see them in me,” says Gaye. “They just want to be heard. When people aren’t given the opportunity to express themselves, you don’t know what is going on.” Gaye is also motivated by a near-death experience she faced in 2019, when she became sick from a reaction to an antibiotic and was hospitalized at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence. She recalls feeling “so weak I couldn’t take it,” but she heard a voice telling her, “your job on earth is not done yet.” Once she regained consciousness, Gaye suffered memory lapses and couldn’t recognize her kids or other visitors, but eventually made progress regaining memories. “From that day on, I knew I had a calling to save people.” Always an entrepreneur, when Gaye moved to Rhode Island at age 18, she opened her own clothing boutique in Providence. Once she began finding her mission, she says, “I

could feel a different energ y that started to arise in me. I did not see [the unhoused] how other people saw them, and over the years, I told my kids that I would take care of them.” Gaye approached her pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church with her plan to feed the homeless, setting the gears in motion for One Less Worry, which is partially supported by donations from the public, but is mostly funded by Gaye’s own retirement savings. Word traveled by handing out flyers in the street and posting on Facebook, and soon Gaye’s name was synonymous with the nourishing meals her organization ser ves on Cranston Street. More recently, she also worked directly with Mayor Brett Smiley and the City of Providence to help seek more ways to help the unhoused. “It’s fresh food,” says Gaye. “It’s not canned. I put my all into it because food makes a difference in people’s lives.” Meals consist of fresh

veggies, rice, and a protein, along with some extra fruit to create an overall balanced meal for those she ser ves. Whether giving out food on the street or ser ving plates at her church, Gaye doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. She says, “The little help that I can do, I will do until God allows me to.”

ACT FAST: Time is of the essence when a pet goes missing. Though circumstances can vary, according to Genereux, “For most missing pets, the best initial step an owner can take is to set up a feeding station – an outdoor camera baited with food – and call me right away.”

ASK THE PROS: Once the bat signal is activated on social media for a runaway, owners can be flooded with conflicting advice. “Many have told me they realized during the search process that even though they’d been given a ton of seemingly helpful information, they somehow still didn’t have the right information or any at all about ser vices like ours,” says Genereux.

“Even worse, they followed bad information they later learned had set back their search.”

BE PROACTIVE: Packleaders PetTrackers offers a range of options, from trailing K9s to thermal drone technolog y with high-powered zoom lenses and other technolog y. Says Genereux, “Setting up a camera and feeding station early on and using search dogs or a thermal drone can help shorten the amount of time your pet is lost, giving the pet a better chance of getting home faster and in good shape.”

hile any dutiful pet family takes precautions to ensure their cat or dog never wanders far from the pack, it’s hard not to fret over what to do if our furry friends run away from home. When it does happen, go-to steps are likely posting lost pet signs, sharing on social media, and calling local animal control officers and shelters – and while these are all good first responses, some situations call for the help of a professional pet tracker. Enter Jamie Genereux and his Black Lab Tigger – living examples of the old adage that some heroes don’t wear capes. Through his Cumberland-based business Packleader PetTrackers, Genereux uses visual tracking to look for physical clues in the surrounding environment where the pet has gone missing , along with other fine-tuned methods. “Trigger and I had been part of the Rhode Island Canine Search & Rescue (SAR) team,” shares Genereux, who first got into winter tracking at age 14, a passion that snowballed into starting his own business in 2010. “Trigger was just six months old when he obtained his AKC Good Citizenship certification and at that point, we’d already spent several months training in off-leash and air-scenting with the wilderness SAR team.” Genereux soon realized that scent-specific trailing was Trigger’s forte. Now his staff also includes two other canine employees: Dexter and Slim. “ There are so many [rescues] that mean so much and have blown me away,” says Genereux, but one that particularly resonates was the stor y of Roxy, a pup who wound up stuck in a 10-foot hole on the beach as her owners relentlessly searched the area. “She seemed to vanish into thin air. I’ll never forget the look on Roxy’s face as I pulled her out of that hole alive and well.” With the holidays upon us, make sure skittish kitties and overly excited pups are acclimated to guests visiting your home before hosting a big gathering to get ahead of an escape, but in the event of a four-legged family member getting loose, here’s Genereux’s advice.

B

lithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum has played a pivotal role in shaping Dan Christina’s life. Some of the Bristol resident’s earliest childhood memories are of reading books on the great lawn with his family. It was during one of those outings young Christina said to Julie Morris, then Blithewold’s horticulture director, that one day he would fill her shoes. Those words came to fruition on the first day of spring last March, when Christina took on the position, filling a void left by the death of 20-year horticulture director Fred Perry who had passed away the previous November. Christina, a 2001 Mt. Hope High School graduate, was studying early elementary education at the University of Rhode Island, when, after a summer internship at Blithewold, he switched majors and graduated with a degree in urban horticulture and turf management. He then began his professional career at Blithewold as assistant grounds manager until 2014 when he left and became the chief horticulturist at Green Animals Topiary Gardens for eight years. These days Christina and his staff at Blithewold are gearing up for the return of Sparkle, the garden’s festive illuminated stroll, which had been scaled back in recent years due to COVID.

Spring Bull Gallery They’re ver y unique, one of a kind, so to see those and to experience being surrounded by these massive trees are ways of enjoying an outdoor space in the winter.

LUMINOSITY: It’s hard to quantify how many lights there are because so many of them are handmade. There might be a single light per flower or a bundle of three or five lights, and we do strands of lights on a lot of trees. We probably have tens of thousands of lights. We’ve started the transition to all LED lighting for the exterior, which will reduce electricity consumption – we are trying to be conservationminded. A lot is involved in breaking down the various handmade ornaments, rewiring them, and restructuring, which takes a lot of time, so it may take three or four years [to completely switch over to LED].

MUSCLE MEMORY : I was riding a lawnmower down in the nutgrove toward the water garden, and as I’m chugging along , I ducked and moved my hand up to push the limbs out of my way. It was the same kind of maneuver I had done for years previously. I felt as if I had jumped back in time; it’s the same motions, and my body just knew to do it without even thinking about it. A nice little experience.

PAST AND PRESENT: Fred [Perry] helped to really form my concept of the landscape, how it could change and how people could really enjoy the space, both horticulturally and with programs and educational events. I’ve had such a long history here, so I feel very personally connected to the way I float through the property. I want our visitors to experience that same kind of tactile feeling you get when you touch some of the trees and experience the kinetic energ y in the age of the landscape. Christine Woodbine, owner of Crosswynds, had a vision: make high-end fashion affordable. She took excess stock, samples, marked-out-of-stock, and past-season apparel to sell at college sidewalk sales at URI, Providence College, Brown, Rhode Island College, and “Tupperware fashion parties” in peoples’ homes. As her reputation grew, Woodbine was able to set up a brick-and-mortar shop in Narragansett, where everyone who knows about “the secret store” can find permanent deals and trendy clothes for every season. At Crosswynds, inventory moves quickly; each week the shop has something new in stock, so shoppers can feel the “thrill of the hunt,” as Woodbine calls it. With autumn in full swing, Woodbine’s shop has recently stocked up on cozy clothes like “shackets” and cropped cardigans, and chic accessories like quilted and sherpa belt bags. Woodbine also keeps in stock plenty of Narragansett-branded goodies so that tourists can find their perfect souvenir and returning local shoppers can show off their Little Rhody pride. Her affordable fashion concept has been a staple in the state for over 30 years.

ometimes the heart wants what the heart wants and for Bristol homeowners and home-cooks Chris Silva and Jason Conley, they wanted a kitchen built for cooking from scratch. This vision for their 1929 Dutch Colonial involved a bold structural change : an exposed ceiling. “ This choice, which we insisted on from the beginning despite the construction

complications it presented, ser ved both aesthetic and functional purposes,” begins Silva. “In a small house, ever y square inch mattered, even in regard to height.” The couple looked to RIKB Design Build of Warwick to make this joy-of-cooking kitchen work. Says Erika Pearson, design consultant, “They knew they wanted rustic wood finishes, decorative open storage, and a better layout, but

needed help bringing everything together and navigating the construction. They recognized that a typical cookie-cutter kitchen wouldn’t make them happy, and they were looking for a firm that could do something more creative and tailored to their style.” “Initially, we started by tackling the layout,” says Pearson, who explains that any time walls are knocked down in a kitchen, it

Warm woods pair nicely with the cool blue of the cabinetry can become challenging to find enough space for the cabinetr y and appliances; adding to that challenge was two different ceiling heights which required careful planning to make sure appliances would clear the space. “ We had to spend a bit more time sourcing some of the products, particularly the open shelving , the display niche, and the decorative hood. We went off the beaten path to find these items and even found a craftsman on

56

Etsy who could provide reclaimed wood in the exact sizes we needed, so our project manager could assemble the niche on site to our specifications.” Other modifications to the kitchen included exposed shelving , glass-front cabinetr y, and a spice rack wall, which keeps frequently used essentials within reach while adding a dash of visual interest. “ The hanging cookware, fruit and vegetable baskets,

cookbooks, and shelving all ser ve a similar function. We didn’t want to hide the function of the kitchen; we wanted to showcase it!” says Silva with a palpable glee. “Raising the dr ywall ceiling , we had inherited an exposed beam ceiling that increased the room’s height by a foot, almost two feet at the pinnacle of the south nook! This new kitchen was the final piece to a decade-long puzzle. It makes us smile ever y day.”

The Relaxed Host

From cheese boards to florals, be party-ready all season long with a bit of outsourcing By Elyse Major, styling and photography by Kayla Aucoin Entertaining can be a scary word until the a-ha moment when you realize most any get-together can be as simple or extravagant as is comfortable for the host. If you enjoy going all out with food and decor, have at it! If you want to make things pretty for a small group with prepared foods and minimal effort, that’s great, too. The bottom line is setting aside a special time to spend with people who matter to you; the less you need to do on party day, the more fun you’re sure to have.

Metallics add shine and style

T H E C H EC K L I ST

TIP: After the party, use florals to decorate flat surfaces like mantels and shelves

DATE: Even before Thanksgiving, many people start to get busy with commitments, so try to select a date and time for your gathering that seems realistic and gives plenty of advance notice. THEME: This can simply be a color or food type on which to base other ideas on. Similar to a child’s character-driven party – once a theme is decided, the ideas flow! BUDGET: Based on how many people you’ll have, figure out what you can spend. Consider keeping things affordable with potluck, something large and simple to easily feed a crowd (say, a pot pie) and BYOB options. CLEAN: Do small cleaning, tidying, and decorating jobs as you approach the party so all that’s really left to do the day of is clean areas like bathrooms.

A cheese board topped with an artisanal array makes for a rustic and casual start to any gathering

Wine charms and cocktail napkins are nice touches

PREP: If there are things you can do in advance, do them. Mix dip and let it set in the fridge, chop veggies for crudite and clean it all up, and get oven use out of the way to avoid heating up the place. SHOP: Leave what you don’t want to cook or bake to the pros. PLAN: Create a fluid timeline for the event: guests arrive, set aside time to chat over apps, plan an activity, etc. GOAL: Be sitting dressed, ready, and bored waiting for the first knock at the door.

Poking fun at New England is all in a day’s work for this Rhode Island actor and content creator By Shay Costa

Before your “New Englandah” skits went viral, what got you into creating on social media? After getting back into acting in my mid-20s and building my resume, I knew I needed a social media brand to go with it and that’s when TikTok came along. I noticed its resemblance to platforms like Vine, which created hundreds of the actors and social media influencers we know today. Since acting is a hard industry to break into, having a creative outlet to explore my art was crucial and TikTok allowed for that. Then through some self beliefs, hard work, and a little bit of luck, I finally cracked into the social media world. Now after four years of creating, two of them being more locally known, I’ve found myself in an incredibly fortunate position to represent my home state and New England as a whole. I try my best in what I do. I know it’s not for everyone, but I love what I do. Making people laugh is my personal purpose in life! A big part of your character is the year-round Dunkin’ iced coffee. What’s your go-to order? Medium iced black with something added. I do a splash of something different depending on the day, weather, and my mood. But always with a donut! Now that you have your name out there, what does the future look like for Ian Brownhill? Knowing that as a content creator your 15 seconds can come and go quickly, I’m trying to enjoy the ride I’m on now and seeing just how far it can take me. There will certainly be avenues to explore should this run come to an end. Until then I’ll do my very best to continue on creating and hopefully everyone can enjoy. I’d also like to give a special thanks to everyone who has chosen to watch and support me and my content. I value everyone’s likes, comments, shares, and messages. So thank you so much for the support, I hope to continue entertaining you for a long time to come! What are your favorite things about a Rhody holiday season? New England as a whole really presents ample opportunities, so I can’t really say I have a favorite. From apple picking and pumpkin spice to Turkey Day football games and beautiful foliage, and then Christmas lights are always wonderful to see – I’m just grateful to have these experiences to cherish here each year.

Pork Osso Bucco

Tucked in a quiet, unsuspecting neighborhood, Twin Oaks is run by the DeAngelus family and has been around for almost 90 years. We were regaled with stories of staff members, who were considered family, working at the restaurant long enough to see their children go off to college and other pieces of history from the Rhode Island landmark. Susan DeAngelus Valles, one of the owners; executive chef Ryan Mancini; and server Victor Miale, who’s worked there over 25 years, all treated us like members of the family, too. In no time, we were sipping drinks Valles brought out. My friend enjoyed the Strawberry Margarita Mocktail, with a luscious fruity

puree, while I indulged in the house favorite Twin Oaks Golden Margarita, which enticed with just the right amount of sweetness. Known for its Italian classics, we couldn’t pass up a round of what they called “the good bread.” Coated with Parmesan cheese, the slices of Italian bread are ser ved with olive oil for dipping , with slightly crunchy edges and a delightfully soft, warm center. Next came the Fire Grilled Shrimp with Spicy Aioli, which offered a mouthwatering fier y kick from the sauce. Relishing in this addicting app, I had to restrain myself from filling up before our main courses arrived. Twin Oaks is all about comfort foods, and

the Mashed in the Middle lived up to that and then some. Made with a 50-year-old recipe, it’s stuffed with jumbo shrimp, hot mashed potatoes, and liquid butter in the center. The Gorgonzola Gnocchi, one of Mancini’s many specials, was a fabulous follow-up, with three kinds of meat and a house-made red sauce covering the soft pillows of pasta. Both of these dishes warmed from the inside out, like

a loving embrace. Equally hearty was the Pork Osso Bucco, with steamy, sweet glazed meat so tender it fell off the bone, ser ved with seasoned asparag us and crispy potatoes. Though pleasantly full, we were intrigued by the Miso Churro Ice Cream Sandwich – each bite was a cooling cinnamon-ginger explosion, with the crunch of cookie bits. Despite being a frozen treat on a chilly day, it still managed to

carry the restaurant’s feeling of warmth. We left fully satisfied and clutching our leftover boxes. For quintessential cozy dining to combat the winter ahead, Twin Oaks is an easy choice.

here’s only one rule on Thanksgiving: the day should feature all of your favorites! If you’re looking to add a healthy side – and a pop of color – to the table this year or get creative with a nontraditional Friendsgiving soiree, look no further than this barley salad with lemony gravy, a perfect complement to the tastes of fall. With shiitake mushrooms, onions, and pomegranate, this nourishing dish lends bright and savory notes to the day’s onslaught of flavors.

SIDES TO G O While family tradition may dictate that some dishes must be prepared from scratch, take the pressure off by shopping fresh-prepared sides from your local small grocer for the rest. Here’s a handful of spots where a stroll down the aisle is as good as fresh from the oven.

ST EP S 1. Cook the barley according to the package instructions (make sure the water is salted). 2. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Toss in the shiitake mushrooms and onions and saute for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the chopped walnuts and continue to cook for 5 minutes, stirring more frequently to prevent the walnuts from burning. 3. Add the spinach, chickpeas, cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, and salt. Stir while cooking until the spinach is wilted down. 4. Add the flour, and stir to coat everything before pouring in the broth. 5. Simmer over medium heat until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Once the sauce is thick, remove from the heat and pour in the lemon juice. At this point, you will want to taste the sauce and add more salt if desired.

Wine aficionado and owner of The Savory Grape, Jessica Granatiero

through The Wine & Spirit Education Trust, Granatiero credits the majority of her knowledge to the store itself, a “baptism by fire” where she learned from doing. She made a point to taste each bottle they carried so she could better describe them to customers. She also credits her expertise to her travels throughout Europe and the US. “Some people like to golf – I like to travel,” she says with a laugh.

She particularly loves the Piedmont region in northwest Italy. Seeing how wine is made in these small, family-owned wineries has developed her palate. “ When you see where the grapes are grown and under what conditions, the process of how they’re picked and crushed, where they’re stored – you begin to learn that the way wine is made influences how it tastes,” Granatiero explains.

rom sharing advice on “Getting Help With Wine Choices” in the Wall Street Journal to appearing in the pages of copious regional publications, both as the subject and as an author, it’s easy to surmise that Jessica Granatiero is a resource for all things wine and spirits. She recently published Notes to Savor, a journal that was inspired by her own love of writing – and sitting down with Granatiero, it’s clear the most natural thing for her to talk about is wine itself. Along with her oenophilia, Granatiero’s genuine humility resonates – although it would be easy for her to boast about the circuitous path that led her from working in public relations in Washington DC to opening a boutique wine store that is now a premier destination for wine, beer, and spirits in New England. Granatiero’s long-standing passion for wine led her and her husband Nino to found The Savory Grape in East Greenwich, then a 600-square-foot store on Main Street centered around the customer experience. “We had a vision for a small wine shop, boutique in nature – we really wanted it to be about the experience and to create a culture around wine,” says Granatiero. When The Savory Grape first opened 17 years ago, she thought of it as the “Starbucks of wine.” At that time, Starbucks sought to create a culture around the experience of coffee, and she wanted to do the same for wine. “We wanted people to be able to meander around the store, tasting wine. We started a wine of the month club where we’d feature a new wine, complete with details about the vineyard and tasting notes.” Even the way the couple organized their bottles was unique : rather than by countr y or grape varietal, they categorized wines by body style, such as medium- or full-bodied. This encouraged customers to tr y different, lesserknown selections. “Oftentimes people would come in and say, ‘I like a light-style wine, like a pinot grigio,’” Granatiero says, “and we could direct them to an entire selection they might like to tr y.” Although her formal study of wine was

BOTTLED BLISS Providing advice on pairings is one of Granatiero’s fortes, and she’s eager to share three of her Thanksgiving picks that will be featured in the store this month:

BEAUJOLAIS This very light red wine comes from the Beaujolais region of France, south of Burgundy. Made from Gamay grapes, it’s a fruit-forward wine without being sweet. “This pairs well with a myriad of dishes you’ll find on the Thanksgiving table,” Granatiero says.

He has special interests in noise-induced hearing loss, hearing conservation and psychoacoustics.

FRANCIACORTA No celebration is complete without popping open a bottle of this dry Italian sparkling wine from Mirabella winery, consisting of a blend of different grapes that is one of Granatiero’s favorites.

RIESLING Always a classic choice, Granatiero recommends the Dr. G, a dry riesling with peach and apricot aromatics. “It has a tiny spritz to it, and really marries well with cranberry sauce and stuffing with sausage. It has a light fruitiness, but enough acid to cut through the fat of gravy.”

One of the most remarkable things about The Savor y Grape – now a 10,000-squarefoot store located in the East Greenwich plaza with Dave’s Marketplace – is that even with an expanded inventor y, Granatiero and her team still make it a point to taste ever y wine. “It’d be doing our customers a disser vice not to,” she explains. Despite its changes and expansion, the focal point of The Savory Grape continues to be customer experience. Granatiero and her team are welcoming and approachable, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. “ We enjoy working with clients – it makes us feel really good knowing we’ve helped someone find something they love.”

ver plastic cups of wine with friends, I’ve outfitted a terrarium, assembled a floral arrangement in a hollowed pumpkin, and painted the Narragansett Towers beneath the glow of a full yellow moon. It’s always a good time even if some of my make-and-takes end up in the circular file, as they say. To me, the fun usually lies in the process, not the product – creating memories with friends. I’m always as giddy over the buffet of supplies presented as my nine-year-old self would be with a fresh set of crayons. I’ve been following Providence Art Glass for a while, ever since featuring the work of owners Rebecca Zhukov and Terence Dubreuil in an article about Rhode Island lamp makers. When I learned the industrious duo was opening Blackstone River Glass Center, a 20,000-square-foot studio space and shop in the Valley Falls section of Cumberland, I was intrigued. A visit to their website shows they offer a range of classes, including Glassblowing Girls Night Out on Saturday evenings. Sign me up! Not long after registering for the class, I received an email with a class waiver and prep list. Close-toed shoes, long hair tied back, and a note that we’ll be working in front of furnaces and ovens at 2,000 degrees. This is serious business and my best friend and I, who can be quite silly, wondered what we got ourselves into! We arrived in the dark of night (it’s past six, after all) into the luminous gift shop entrance. Our instructor Jesse Yager, a professional glass blower and flame worker, greeted and led us through to an area zoned to showcase glass lighting fixtures, and a dining table set for our girls night with cheese and crackers, and wine. Thinking about that furnace, we decide to skip the sips and get right to the action. Yager provided an over view of the equipment, and explained that the craft has remained the same for centuries. He demonstrated all of the steps involved in making a drinking glass – the item we chose to make – from start to finish. There’s the heating of a

long rod in the furnace, rolling it to gather colored glass fragments (or frit) so they fuse to the tip. This is followed by constantly rolling , shaping , and returning the business end to the extreme heat often to get the glass back to a molten state to manipulate. Yager took care of the blowing , which creates a cavity in the forming bubble, and talked us through widening the opening with large steel tweezers, while taking turns rolling. When it was my turn to blow-torch a nub at the bottom, “Fire” by Jimi Hendrix played over the sound system; it was a moment. Once we completed our glasses, they were labeled and placed in an annealing oven to cool slowly overnight. When I returned during the daytime to pick them up, the facility’s beautiful location on the Blackstone River was more obvious. I headed inside and went directly to the shelf holding finished work and smiled at my glass with pale aqua spots in all its wabi-sabi glory. Not only was this fascinating and fun, but I love my glass, which I’m using as a vase. I’ll never look at drinking glasses the same way, and I even left with both of my eyebrows intact!

he school book fair is making a comeback, but now it’s targeted toward readers of all ages – The Rhode Island Authors Expo is a book lover’s dream come true. On Saturday, December 2 from 10am to 4pm at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, hundreds of local authors will display their books and talk about the art of writing. Authors will be selling – and signing – their books on the expo floor as well as presenting panels and workshops on the business of publishing and the creative process. If you love to read or you’ve ever considered writing a book, this free event is the place to be. Susan Joyce, author of the illustrated children’s book Billy the Rescue Dog, describes why the event is so much fun for readers and writers alike. “The expo is special for a couple of reasons; it’s all about books and writing , so it draws book lovers who like supporting local authors. As an author, I enjoy being surrounded by my peers and sharing ideas. This will be my second year and I can’t wait!” The smallest state has a rich, diverse collection of writers that make up the Association of Rhode Island Authors (ARIA), the organizers of the event. Ever y genre is represented, from historical fiction to poetr y to the always pop ular true crime. In addition to the annual expo, ARIA offers events and activities for its members all year long. And, contrar y to popular belief, you don’t have to be a published author to join. Membership is less than $50 per year and includes access to ARIA’s Writing Academy, which offers a host of workshops. New this year, the expo will feature areas called Coffee Clatches where g uests can chat with authors informally about a wide range of topics. As expo organizer Mike Squatrito explains, “we want people to be able to sit and relax and spend time talking with our authors about whatever they want.” Bestselling author Martha Reynolds shares her excitement for the day, saying , “the expo is the biggest event of the year for ARIA. Book lovers from southeastern New England converge to reconnect with favorite authors and discover new ones. I enjoy speaking directly with loyal readers and making new friends.” Her latest novel, I Wish I Had a River, is just one of the many titles that will be available to purchase and have signed. Emotional Growth A sit- d ow n w i t h D e e r T i c k ’ s Ian O ’N e il a b o ut g ett i n g perso na l o n late st e f fo r t By Adam Hogue

W

hat began as largely a solo project for singer-songwriter John McCauley, Providence-based Deer Tick has morphed over the course of six studio albums and continuous touring into the realm of a legacy band, adding keys, horns, and orchestration into their sonic palette on top of g uitar-and-lyric song writing. Coming by way of punk band Titus Andronicus, Deer Tick guitarist Ian O’Neil found his way into the band while playing the local DIY scene in NYC in 2009. Since then, O’Neil, along with McCauley, Dennis Ryan on drums, and Chris Ryan on bass, have become a creative unit centered around the live shows people love.

86

It is that live atmosphere and persona that seems to lay the foundation for the music the band creates. Deer Tick strikes a balance between what people appreciate about seeing them live and what the band members want to bring on the road with them, allowing their songs to venture into new territor y without straying too far from home. On their new release, Emotional Contracts, the band stakes claim in jam-band territor y with numbers like “If I Tr y to Leave,” a song that ver y much puts the band, g uitar solos, heavy bass, and driving drums front and center, making space for instruments to explore and expand. “At the core of our song writing is malleable

songs,” O’Neil comments. “Living as a live band has very much influenced where we go with our music. We want to put our best foot forward with our new tracks and we’re lucky to have fans that come along for the ride. So even though we have an extensive back catalog , people are right there with us when we play them eight new songs in a set.” Under the direction of producer Dave Fridmann, Deer Tick recorded most of the album live, but explored many nuanced sounds, tunings, instrumentations, and styles that set this album in a more mature and self-realized place than some of their past work. “After the breaks we took and with John [McCauley] returning to Rhode Island after

November 1 - 24, 2023 living in Nashville, we finally got a chance to just jam and write together in an open, collaborative spirit,” O’Neil says. “Once a week we get together and just play ; we haven’t been able to do that in a long time and it’s really pushed our song writing as a band.” In between up -tempo, g uitar solo -filled hops and shuffles, such as “Forgiving Ties,” “Grey Matter,” and “Disgrace,” Deer Tick finds themselves taking more introspective turns on tracks like “My Ship” and “A Light Can Go Out in The Heart,” bringing it all down midway with Dennis Ryan’s “Running From Love” before the brooding epic “ The Real Thing ” closes things out with an ending that could just keep going and going and going. What stands out on Emotional Contracts is the narrative personal nature of the lyrics that creates small scenarios and vignettes residing in sonic landscapes that venture into var ying terrain, all while remaining uniquely Deer Tick. The powerful puff of a tube amp in overdrive, the Strat-driven jangle, the rumbling , clean steady bass, McCauley and O’Neil’s voices, and the heavy-handed crash cymbal are all present, but there’s also an exploration in sound and content the band hasn’t shown us yet. “A big lesson on some of the songs we’ve been writing comes from Lou Reed,” O’Neil begins, “that the best lyrics don’t have to rhyme, but say something real. We played around with the details in these songs to say what we mean and connect with people through specific observations and narratives.” When listening to Emotional Contracts, snapshots and brief glimmers of Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen, and Blues Traveler come into focus for the briefest of seconds, all within a ver y ‘90s context. The Grateful Dead has In the Dark, Neil Young has Harvest Moon, Mark Knopfler has Golden Heart, and Deer Tick has Emotional Contracts. “ We’re at a point where we want to satisf y ourselves first before we go out of our way to satisf y others with our music,” O’Neil says. “As our audiences age with us, that allows us to more fully be ourselves and create the music and sing about the things that matter to us.” For music, merch, and more, visit DeerTickMusic.com.
