Dear Readers,
The shopping season is upon us and there are so many options of where to spend your dollars. And sure, there’s an ease to ordering online and certain excitement of heading to busy plazas and malls, but to make an errand into an experience, there’s nothing like heading to a charming destination to shop and eat from an independently owned business. Most shopkeepers and hospitality owners wait all year for this window of opportunity to show off all they have to familiar and new faces; they set the stage with decorations, appealing merchandise, and dinner and drink specials, hoping patrons will enjoy their visit and return.
Supporting small businesses is at the heart of everything we do at Hey Rhody . Every page shines a spotlight on the interesting people and beautiful locations that make Rhode Island the special place it is. As a print magazine in an increasingly digital world, we rely on the symbiotic relationship of our advertisers and loyal readership; we’re a small business, too. In a society where the tangible is fading, we are doing all we can to promote the authentic and to provide a useful respite from the headlines, instead sharing things that bring comfort and
joy into our little corners of the world.
In this issue, you will find engaging stories about your Rhody neighbors, and hopefully be inspired to travel the state to try a new pastry, visit a shop you weren’t aware of, or realize your favorite earrings were made in Providence. Our cover story “The Joy of Shopping,’’ by lifelong Rhode Islander Rose Kenyon, takes us on a tour of some of the most charming spots in the state where you can make a day of shopping and dining small, enjoying the hustle and bustle inside cozy businesses along festooned main streets – and hopefully leave with a parcel or three, full tummy, and a feeling of goodwill to pay forward with a smile.

Botanical Bliss
North Scituate farmers bring the greenery indoors for enchanting year-round programing
By Abbie Lahmers
inter in Rhode Island means shorter days, naked tree branches, and blan kets of snow and ice for miles – but there’s an oasis in North Scitu ate that serves as a beacon of greenery amid the frost-bitten land. Every year in October, Skydog Farm owners Katherine Fotiades and Mark Phillips bring their succulents and bo tanicals inside their 1,800-square-foot heated greenhouse for the year-round enjoyment and education of their visitors.
“I consider myself an artist. Botanicals and nature are the mediums I use to express myself,” Fotiades admits, though she resists assign ing herself a label – she’s also an educator of mindfulness and creative expression, has been a gardener all her adult life, and worked with the community for 30 years, doing everything from bringing chicks to schools for young stu dents to draw to leading guided meditations for the Ram Dass Fellowship that meets the last Sundays of the month at the farm.
“Everything we sell we have propagat ed and grown ourselves either from seed or from cuttings. We have an eclectic collection of a bunch of what I call the mother plants, which I take leaves from to propagate the new plants,” says Fotiades.
Though potted plants are available for pur chase, what Skydog Farm primarily offers is experience. “We’re moving away from relying on the sale of agricultural products as our main revenue source and focusing on pro viding nature-based experiences here at the farm,” Fotiades explains, “whether it’s having students here or field trips with Rhode Island Farm to School Network or it’s adults looking to learn more about regenerative farming,” along with hosting botanical arrangement workshops and Sacred Sunday gatherings.
This season marks another pivot for the farm, too. Fotiades and partner Phillips – a

longtime hydroponic farmer who has owned three of them over the past few decades – recently sold their hydropon ic greenhouse to instead focus on con sulting as more and more schools and businesses are jumping on the chance to grow their own leafy greens indoors.
Scaling back also lets them expand their programming, with a full schedule of workshops even in the colder months, when making connections with our pe rennial cohabitants seems more import ant than ever. “We really feel that the Wintertime Botanical Oasis offers a ref uge to the cold and barren landscape that exists outside when you step into this greenhouse filled with all these green liv ing vibrant plants,” says Fotiades. “When we tune into nature, we can see how re silient it is, and when we really connect with it, we come to understand through direct experience, we are nature itself. We are not apart from it. Once we form
this awareness, it really helps us claim our own sense of resiliency.”
From herbal workshops to community events like a Winter Solstice Spiral, all of Skydog Farm’s December program ming taps into the rejuvenating powers of the outdoors. It will also make way for the return of a land stewardship ap prenticeship opening later in the year, as well as a seven-month intensive fol lowing the lifecycle of cannabis plants – Fotiades and Phillips are licensed medical marijuana caregivers who are all about teaching conscious use and re moving the stigma.
No matter what you’re seeking, a vis it to Skydog Farm this season is “an in vitation to slow down and get a direct connection with the living force in the greenhouse that’s guaranteed to uplift your spirit,” says Fotiades, “and who doesn’t need that in the dead of winter in Rhode Island?”

Meet Luis Hernandez
The person behind the new voice during your morning drive-time
TIn October, The Public’s Radio listeners said farewell to longtime morning host, Chuck Hinman. To welcome Luis Hernandez, new host of Morning Edition , he sat down with Maddie Mott, The Public’s Radio Director of Membership and Marketing, to talk about radio, some of his favorite stories as a journal ist, and a few choice Rhode Island delicacies.
MADDIE MOTT : Can you introduce yourself?
LUIS HERNANDEZ : I am Luis Hernandez. I’m a 20-year radio broadcast journalist veteran. I am radio through and through – I love the medium. I’ve tried television, I’ve tried print – for me, ra dio is heavenly. By day, I am a radio journalist. By night, I’m a daydreamer, wannabe writer. I’m a podcaster. I’m also a little bit of an artist. And I’m still a kid at heart. When I can, I’m a gamer too.
MOTT : You’ve worked in broadcasting for a long time. How did you get into radio?
HERNANDEZ : This was by accident. I was in college. I was an art major in college and study ing history as well. And it was my sophomore year at Flagler College. And they built a radio station on campus. And they had auditions for DJs. My friend Mike said, “Let’s go be DJs!” And I just said, “Sure, why not? That might be fun.” And it was fun. I’d never done it before. And I remember the audition – I went in and Dan McCook, who’s still there running the sta tion, gave me a cue card. He said read this. I read it. He said, thank you. He caught up with me later. He said, “Have you ever done this be fore?” I said, “No.” He’s like, “You want a job?” And that was it. And I fell in love with it.
MOTT : Is there a story you covered or an inter view you conducted that affected you the most?
HERNANDEZ : There was one I remember that was really impactful. Years ago, I was hosting a show in Fort Myers. And we were talking about suicide survivors with family members whose loved one committed suicide. And I had a father
whose son had committed suicide. And I remem ber I was very careful with the questions I asked, but at one point, he was affected by it and he just couldn’t continue. I said, “We’re going to stop and you don’t have to continue, you can leave the room and then let me know.” And then the sad part about that story was four or five months later, I get a call from somebody who was part of helping us organize that show and the father had committed suicide. He’d gone into such a depres sion and he couldn’t handle it. Those kinds of things, they hit you.
Now on the brighter side, one of my favorite stories was this couple from Iran. This is when I was in Las Vegas. And they were artists, two very different artists, and they escaped Iran. Like at one point, the government’s like, “We don’t like what you’re doing with your art, we’re gonna come and get you.” They escaped in the middle of the night. But they had to leave all their stuff behind. And somehow they ended up in Vegas. And it was such a fascinating inter view. The husband didn’t speak English yet. So he was in the studio with his wife. And she was interpreting for him. And it was just this amaz ing story, and I went to see their work. They had met somebody who owned a gallery who made some space for both of them. And great. It turns out that show – and I’m not taking credit,
but it’s just being in the right place at the right time. It’s the power of public radio. A professor at University of Nevada, Las Vegas was a big fan of the show, was listening and loved the story, met the couple [at the gallery], and two semes ters later, they’re both teaching.
MOTT : Wow, that’s amazing!
HERNANDEZ : Yeah, I was so, so happy for them. There’s always great stuff and sad stuff because you know, we’re not focused on rat ings. We’re focused on people and their sto ries. That’s what I love about the job.
MOTT : What are you most looking forward to as the new host of Morning Edition?
HERNANDEZ : More than anything, I want to bring more local. More local voices, stories, and conversations. And I want to find a way to get people to talk to each other and engage the audience. The biggest goal is local, local, local.
MOTT : What are you up to when you’re not on the air?
HERNANDEZ : Well, right now to try to find an apartment! I’m trying to get back into my

art more. I do own my own business on the side where I produce my own podcasts, and I do that really for just a creative outlet. There’s no intention of me doing it because I think I’m gonna be the next rich guy. It’s just for fun. I have been working on two novels I’m trying to finish. That keeps me pretty busy.
MOTT : What genre are your novels?
HERNANDEZ : One of them is a science fic tion, climate fiction book that is a collection of short stories that takes place 50 years from now. Half of the stories take place in Miami, the other half in Las Vegas. It’s looking at the question of what are the cities going to look like in 50 years? Those cities are in real dan ger. Miami and Las Vegas are similar in that they have this really precarious relationship to water. So Miami will drown and Las Vegas will starve. But that keeps me busy.
Once in a while – listen, I’m a Gen Xer. I grew up with arcades and video games. And you know what? I will not deny the fact that yeah, I have not grown out of that.
MOTT : You’ve lived in a lot of places. You’ve lived in Florida. You’ve lived in Ve gas. What are you most looking forward to about life in New England?
HERNANDEZ : First of all, to immerse myself in life here. I don’t know when I get to call my self a Rhode Islander. But that’s fine. Whatever I gotta do, I’ll do it. Wherever I go, I like to immerse myself in the community, in life there, because it helps me on air. I know that I’m not from here. I’m not going to pretend that I know everything. I’m not going to be that host. But, you know, the more I learn, the better I’m go ing to get at it. And Rhode Island – and it’s not making fun of it – but I love the fact that it is small. So I can get around to everything.
Because Florida, you can spend a couple days trying to drive out of it. I’m looking forward to going to the beaches and seeing all these different towns and getting out and about. I want to experience what life is like and I also
am excited about being in a place that has sea sons. Florida seasons are summer and lighter summer. I just have to go shopping for jackets.
MOTT : Alright, so my this or that round: Which Rhode Island delicacy are you most excited to try? Pizza strips or hot wieners? A pizza strip is a rectangle of pizza with just tomato sauce. No toppings, no cheese, nothing. And then, hot wieners are small hot dog[s] with celery salt, onions, mustard, and meat, like ground meat on top.
HERNANDEZ : They both sound good. In this case, I want to try the wiener.
MOTT : Stuffies or Rhode Island clam chowder? And a stuffie is a clam that’s minced up, mixed with onion and sausage and breadcrumbs, and then put back in the shell. And then Rhode Is land clam chowder is like normal clam chowder but with a clear broth and bacon – so, no milk.
HERNANDEZ : Okay, gotcha. I’m gonna be the first to admit that I have never had clams.
MOTT : Oh my gosh.
HERNANDEZ : So you know what? Let’s say both because I have to try them.
MOTT : And then the last one. This is the most important one.
HERNANDEZ : Oh, gosh.
MOTT : Del’s frozen lemonade or coffee milk?
HERNANDEZ : You know what, the coffee. I will have to admit that I do miss Cuban coffee. It’s mostly coffee with milk and sugar. Very powerful caffeine. The small little shots of Cuban coffee will wake the dead. But yeah, no, the other one [Del’s] sounds really good too.

Bristol Santa House provides holiday magic for all little believers
By Andrea E. McHugh
t’s official: Santa Claus is coming to town – Bristol, to be exact.
The jolly one himself has set up shop at the corner of State and Thames streets and has already been bringing holiday cheer to children of all ages and abilities. “This is my gift to the town and community,” says Michael Riel ly, founder and “chief merriment officer” of the
James D. Rielly Foundation. While being Santa is nothing new to Rielly, the Bristol Santa House project is an entirely new endeavor. The 20x14’ house was built in Vermont, then shipped to Bristol last month, where electrical, finish car pentry, painting, and the final touches were set in place to create a holiday experience to remem ber for both the young and young at heart.
According to the foundation, the goal of the Santa House, part of the annual Bristol Christ mas Festival, is “to create a family-friendly holi day destination full of joy, whimsy, and nostalgia,
where the season comes alive through interactive experiences and Hallmark-worthy moments.” Ri elly explains that though the house is open to the public, it was created to accommodate children with developmental or physical challenges, and families with financial struggles.
“It’s really for kids with special needs, autism, Down syndrome – kids who can’t always go to a mall and wait in a long line,” he says. Bright lights, loud music, and large crowds can be over whelming for children with sensory processing issues, he explains, so a reservation system is in

place to ensure children can visit with Santa one-on-one, sans sensory overload.
“Every child deserves to experience the joy of Christmas, regardless of circumstance,” says Rielly. “Sadly, many children with special needs never have the opportunity to meet with Santa, and some families simply cannot afford Christmas gifts.” Rielly says volunteers who work with children with special needs have stepped up to ensure the Bristol Santa House will be a warm and welcoming space, and gifts are plentiful thanks to generous donors.
Rielly, the Bristol Town Crier since 2015, is just doing what is already in his DNA. Be ing Santa has been a Rielly family tradition dating back to 1927, when his grandfather, Jim “Papa” Rielly, spotted an impoverished family in Bristol living in an abandoned chicken coop. Then just 19, the elder Rielly mustered up what he could during the chal lenging economic period to bring the family some Christmas joy by being Santa. He would go on to be the longest running consecutive Santa Claus in history – a streak recorded in the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame in Santa Claus, Indiana (yes, it’s real), and would annually bring the holiday spirit to or phanages, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, churches, charitable organizations, and mil itary bases. (Embedded in Bristol’s history forever, the elder Rielly also served as Bristol Town Crier, from 1975 to 1989.)
Michael was first tapped to be Santa in 1971, at the tender age of eight, in the Christmas play at Bristol’s now-closed Byfield School. He’d go on to play Santa for the Rhode Island Veter ans Home, for Juvenile Diabetes Association and countless other organizations, continuing a mission started by his family nearly a century ago. “I lead the Fourth of July Parade in the most patriotic town in the country, and I get to be Santa? Gift Shop
What it is:
A charming shop filled with uncommon gifts and homegoods sourced locally and from around the US and Europe.
Where to find it:
Look for an 1840s Greek Revival farm house on East Main Road. There’s a bus stop right out front.
What makes it a Rhody Gem?
This “perfectly curated” store and an tique gallery barn nestled on a two-acre bucolic parcel in Portsmouth was meant for meandering. The farmhouse features four distinctly themed rooms: a nautical room, a baby section, a formal wedding and gift room, and a farmhouse kitchen. New products are beautifully complement ed by antique treasures, from English Vic torian dining pieces to Swedish pillows made from vintage fabrics. Owner Denys Eftekhar refreshes the merchandise sea sonally, drawing inspiration from the col ors and traditions unique to each time of year. Of Swedish descent, her Nordic pas sion makes Christmas shopping a magical experience. “Time and time again, our cus tomers compliment us on creating a ‘place of serenity, joy, and beauty,’” says Eftekhar. “We love to see our antique pieces rehom ed and repurposed; their stories alone are often worthy of taking with you.”

A Watch Hill mansion gets an all-American coastal upgrade

magine you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve at your home when a frozen pipe bursts! This was the case for a Watch Hill family made up of a husband and wife with two grown daughters, one son, three grandchildren, and more on the way. The damage was so severe the entire house needed to be gutted.
“When the house was destroyed by water, I thought, ‘why not rethink the architecture of the spaces to create better flow and larger areas for their growing family?’ So we did,” says Kellie Burke, an interior designer based in West Hartford, CT, who
was hired to completely renovate the four-bedroom 5,000-square-foot home, situated within walking distance to the beach and village.
“The husband had worked on a naval Coast Guard ship off of Nantucket in his younger days and the wife is passionate about the preservation of her hometown of Watch Hill,” says Burke. Her aim was to create a coastal design that was cheerful and prac tical with a comfortable flow for an expanding fam ily. Most importantly, Burke wanted it to reflect the owners of the home. The end result is a yacht-in spired feel with nods of classic New England preppy.

The floor plan was modified to accommo date a larger open-style entertaining space. Structural changes included finishing off the unused garage space to house lockers, a cabana shower, and a mudroom area where all of the kids and dogs could drop into after spending the day at the beach. The kitchen now boasts an expansive open plan that includes a service bar and three sinks, allowing the family to bet ter pursue their passion for cooking.
When it came time to decorate, Burke pre scribed a mix of antique and modern coastal. Think ship lighting and portholes, and teak and holly floors. “In this particular home, the

client wanted a true coastal design using the nautical colors of the yacht club com munity, as well as the soothing, calm colors of the ocean,” says Burke.
“Decorating for the environment is key,” advises the award-winning designer. “You want to transform the way you feel in a space based on the climate, as well as your daily routine. In this particular town, we wanted to have a welcoming vibe that is suitable for entertaining while also being spacious enough for such a big family. You are always having guests come in and out. Bling in the New Year
By Karen Greco
Rhode Island was once the jewel ry capital of the world, so when sisters Missy Pagios and Kristen Thurber purchased JoJo Loves You, the bling-tastic jewelry design studio, they knew they were going to move it from its Boston base to their home state. Founded in 2003 by Josie Hewitt with a solitary stud earring, the ultra-feminine jewelry collection expanded under the spunky sisters’ tutelage to include sparkly bracelets and necklaces in ad dition to an assortment of other earring styles.
Hewitt’s inspiration for her flashy baubles
came when she picked up a package of vin tage crystals at an antique store. With those crystals, she created a pair of low-profile stud earrings, affectionately called Blings, and launched an effervescent empire.
The Rhode Island sisters began their JoJo journey in Newport when they first spotted the brilliant studs at a local shop. The own er knew Hewitt and put Thurber, a jewelry designer, in touch. Thurber joined Hewitt’s design team and worked with her until 2015, when Hewitt shared she was ready to get out of the biz. Thurber offered to buy the
company and Pagios, who was ready for a change from her 12-year career in sales, joined her in the venture.
Each piece of JoJo’s jewelry is hand-crafted right in their Providence design studio. The high-quality Austrian crystals are perfect for holiday party shimmer, New Year’s Eve flash, or simply a pick-me-up for everyday glam. With the rallying cry of “sparkle and be awesome,” the unapologetically over-the-top gemstones come in a rainbow of over 100 brilliant colors and over 15 styles to mix and match. Keep an eye out for their holiday line, Polar Nights.

Newport: WHARFS FILLED WITH WHIMSY
For a taste of classic New England, Newport’s multi-century-old wharfs are the perfect place to start. Bannis ter Wharf and Bowen’s Wharf, both located off America’s Cup Avenue, have been thriving seaports since the 1700s, boasting unique goods from near and far. Today, each is still lined with boutiques, cafes, restau rants, sightseeing excursions, and more. With brick walkways, brisk ocean breezes, and 18th century buildings, these districts are replete with quintessential Newport charm.

On a brisk winter day, there are few things better than warm chowder. Pop into the Black Pearl for a world-fa mous bowl, which you can even take with you in a can! Just next door, check out Brahmin for handbags and ac cessories, Royal Male for British and European clothing, or North Sails for high-style performance wear, and Man darine Boutique, among countless others. Providence: STROLL SCENIC STREETS
The city has so many pockets of places to spend the day, but for history and charm, we’re focus ing on two streets: Hope and Westminster. On the East Side, Hope Street is lined with historic homes and the city’s highest concentration of independently owned businesses. Wickford Village: CINEMATIC CHARM BY THE HARBOR
An undeniably special part of North Kingstown is Wickford Village, where visitors can “shop, dine, and play by the bay.” A big part of Wickford’s cinematic charm comes not only from its Co lonial architecture, street lamps, and marina backdrop, but the ef forts of the merchants, who go all out decorating shop windows for Christmas, imbuing the warm feeling of a Hallmark movie set.

Winter Warmer in Westerly
By Rose Kenyon
hen the opportunity arose to come back,” says Andrew Brooks, executive chef at West erly’s Weekapaug Inn, “it was a no brainer for me. To me, this is the best of the best.” The quaint New England atmosphere, tight-knit staff, and just-right size that allows him to bring person alized experiences to guests make it an ideal work environment for Brooks. “The inn is small enough that you can put your heart and soul into every dish. Every plate that leaves the kitchen you’re seeing, you’re a part of. The team’s small, so we’re able to work so incredibly close together. It’s a family here. It’s a special place to work.”
After graduating from Johnson and Wales and working in a handful of Providence restau rants, the Westerly inn overlooking the Q uono chontaug Pond is where he got his first taste of hotel cooking. Now, after years working for the Omni Amelia Island Resort and Ritz Carlton –as well as a stint as executive sous chef at sister property Ocean House – he’s back.
The 123-year-old inn boasts 33 guest rooms, a waterfront view, and the modern, yet historical ly minded updates of a recent renovation. In the restaurant, the cuisine reflects the inn’s unique history and location, with a rotating tasting menu highlighting products and flavors of Rhode Island and the Atlantic coast. Working with local growers, farmers, and fishmongers, the restaurant serves only the freshest ingredients, fluctuating with the micro seasons of coastal New England.
For Brooks, “farm fresh” has always been a fa miliar concept. Growing up in Vermont where sustainable practices are more commonplace, he takes pride in the inn’s dedication to this

initiative. Through a partnership with Earth Care Farms, the inn is able to repurpose the property’s food scraps to create soil for near by farmers, as well as their own herb garden and greenhouse. A recently installed state-ofthe-art geothermal heating and cooling sys tem and a white-water recycling system help ensure coastal ecosystems stay unimpacted. Brooks delights in the way these sustainable efforts support the environment’s natural cy cles. “On top of the ecological benefits of it,” he says, “it’s a really fun learning experience for the staff, team, and guests.”
While Brooks says the ambiance of the inn is special year round, the winter months are his favorite. Fireplaces warm every room and guests cozy in to taste the latest seasonal dishes featur ing winter squashes, salsify, Swiss chard, mush rooms, and more. He also looks forward to the inn’s annual Feast of the Fishes Christmas Eve Dinner, an event that has become an anticipated tradition for locals and visitors alike. All served family style, “everything is as house-made as it gets.” The dinner offers the whole cornucopia of coastal New England flavors – charred octopus, calamari, scallops, muscles, and clams – plus house-made cookies and cannolis to finish.
Planning a visit? Weekapaug Inn is open year-round and always welcoming of locals. “We love having guests come see the property, enjoy a meal, or have a drink at the bar. We’re very welcoming to the local community and love to have as many guests drive on as we can.”

OLD-FASHIONED SOFT GINGERSNAP COOKIES
INGREDIENTS
• 3 ¾ cups sifted flour
• ¼ tsp salt
• 2 tsp cinnamon powder
• 2 tsp ginger powder
• ½ cup room-temperature butter
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 egg
• ½ cup molasses
• ½ Tbsp baking soda
• ½ cup strong coffee, room temperature (or not too hot)
STEPS
1. Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Sift the flour, salt, and spices into a large bowl.
2. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, ideally using a stand mixer but a sturdy spatula will do. You may need to stop the machine and scrape the mixture from the sides of the bowl a few times.
3. Add eggs and molasses to the stand mixer or bowl. Mix until fully combined.
4. Dissolve the baking soda in the coffee. Add the flour mixture to the stand mixer alternately with the coffee and mix just enough after each addition to combine the ingredients.
5. Ball the dough (it will be sticky!), and wrap with plastic wrap. Place the dough ball in the refrigerator until fully chilled, at least 3 hours, preferably overnight.
6. Once chilled, roll the dough out on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. For softer cookies, roll until about ⅜ ” thick. For snappier cookies, roll until about 1/6 ” thick. Cut with any cookie cutter you like, or use the opening of a glass cup for round shapes. This recipe makes 24-34 cookies depending on chosen thickness.
7. Remove the extra dough around the cookie cut-outs, and space out cookies so there is room between them.
8. Sprinkle generously with granulated sugar. Bake in the oven for about 9 minutes.
9. Transfer to a cooling rack. Store in an airtight container, or enjoy warm!

An art and literary space brings snacks and stacks to Warren
By Chuck Staton
Arc{hive} Book + Snack ery somehow feels both cozy and regal, grand yet humble. In the northeast corner of downtown War ren, right off of Main Street between Hunky Dory and Prica Farina, sits a strikingly cool addition to this rising star “foodie town” in the Ocean State.
Sharing a space with The Collabo rative, a community-driven arts non profit, it’s fitting that Arc{hive} is a destination designed for drinking in culture and coffee – or art and wine. (It’s also the perfect place to take in the sweet snap of a Birch Beer, from Rhode Island-based Yacht Club Soda.)
Cultivating a spot steeped in local artistry, Arc{hive} also taps into the robust regional food scene, with the

vibe of a relaxed, upscale cafe. This is reflect ed in the decor, too, which lends itself both to an ultra hip mid-century modern library and an airy, serene mini-museum of local talent. It’s a true haven for those looking to indulge in thought, conversation, and food.
If the interior isn’t folksy and welcoming enough, the menu doubles down on this aes thetic by taking the concept of finger foods and elevating it to unexpected places.
Though advertised as a “snackery,” I would argue they deliver much more than quick bites. Arc{hive} works with several local vendors –including Provencal Bakery and Cafe in Mid dletown, West Kingston-based RI Mushroom Co., Narragansett Creamery, and Proclamation Ale Company in Warwick, just to name a few –and it shows. The plates are fresh and carefully crafted. They do lean toward smaller portions, but those decisively light bites feel less like snacks and more like an excuse to sample several of the excellent dishes they’re serving.
Though a great entry point into their fare is undeniably snacky – popcorn with “nooch” (nutritional yeast) and a house spice mix offers a more eclectic flavor profile than you’d expect from popcorn. House-marinated olives with chili and citrus are another quick opening dish perfect for grazing on during dinner conversation.
A round of dips included French onion, which was creamy, salty, and sweet. The White Bean Hummus arrived with carrots and pieces of pita. Seasoned with berbere, an Ethiopian spice blend, it’s both rich and light, a delicious right turn from your typical chick pea base. But it’s the larger plates that really left an impression.
Smoked Bluefish Pâté is served with pita chips and pickles, offering a superb juxtaposition of smoky seafood and plump half-sour pickles. It’s a bold combination, and the starchy, unassuming chips bring a satisfying crunch. A wholly dif ferent take on sweet potatoes, Arc{hive} serves theirs lightly roasted with tahini butter and
black sesame, rather than as a sugary side dish.
Arc{hive} also offers several toasts: a tape nade toast with boquerone butter and tomato, a cured meat toast with cream cheese spread, and a wild mushroom variety with whipped ricotta. Sampling the latter, I found the mush rooms to be impressively flavorful and meaty, a perfect counterbalance to the luscious, salty cheese spread. Finally, the kielbasa with seed mustard is a standout – juicy and flavorful. I experienced it paired with a unique house rel ish made of sweet, crisp pickled watermelon.
With so many varied, excellent dining and lounging options in the East Bay, it’s tough to imagine a completely new concept. Arc{hive} Book + Snackery distills the best of local purvey ors into page-turner small bites worth poring over.

from upcycled Patrón corks, add extra magic to the tree. “I love making these happy little things,” she says.
The RISD-trained graphic designer and paint er worked in Boston as a book cover artist for Houghton Mifflin before transitioning into the paper industry, crafting greeting cards, wedding invitations, and other personalized paper goods.
“I did a lot of trend work for the greet ing card company,” she says. “I’d do presenta tions on what was popular in the marketplace,
identifying holiday and seasonal trends.” Woodland themes were consistently popular across multiple genres, from wedding to baby.
During the pandemic, Q uillen was hanging out on her couch, staring at a decorative bowl of corks on the coffee table. A dome-shaped tequila cork caught her eye, and she realized it made a great mushroom. Itching for a creative project, she dug out her paints and crafted a prototype, and Festive Fungi was sprouted.
At first, Q uillen didn’t consider selling her

handicrafts; for her, they simply made a fun holiday gift for friends and family. But the re cipients raved about the ‘shrooms, so she began investigating the market for nature-themed ornaments. After a few Google searches, she stumbled on some fortuitous folklore.
“In German, Austrian, and Slavic cultures, it’s traditional to gift mushroom ornaments during the holidays,” she says, explaining that the mushrooms, which are considered good
luck, are re-gifted to friends and family at the new year. Each of her Festive Fungi comes with a card explaining the custom.
Q uillen and her husband aren’t knocking back tequila to keep her fledgling company stocked with the whimsical mushrooms. She found a source that sells old Patrón corks in bulk. (“Yup, people actually sell this stuff,” she responds to this reporter’s incredulity, noting she cleans the corks before painting, though
the tequila scent can linger.) She’s growing the product line to include key fobs, fridge mag nets, and indoor garden charms, with season al colors coming soon. But the red and white fairytale mushrooms, which are the traditional for holiday gifting, remain the anchor combo.
Festive Fungi couldn’t have come at a bet ter time for Q uillen. She was laid off from the greeting card company at the end of 2019 and then was dealt a devastating blow when her

New cookbook
is laden with laughs and recipes thanks to its talented authors
By Hugh Minor
It’s here and it’s spectacular. Released in October, Seinfeld: The Official Cookbook is the perfect gift for all Sein -stans and a perfect companion for meals on the couch should you binge the sitcom around the clock on Netflix. The book is by our former editor Julie Tremaine and Brendan Kirby, one of the hosts of WPRI’s The Rhode Show and a superfan of the comedy, which ran over nine seasons on NBC. The hardcover includes 60 recipes drawing from foods referenced in episodes – from Mrs. Choate’s Marble Rye to Elaine’s Mulligatawny Soup. We chatted with the pair about their collaboration, cooking, and, well, nothing.
Hey Rhody: Seinfeld has been off the air for more than 24 years. What’s the deal with this cookbook?
Julie Tremaine: I had already written three books with my publisher Simon & Schuster, including one based on The Office TV show, when they approached me with the idea for a cookbook based on Seinfeld
Brendan Kirby: A cookbook for a show about nothing.
HR: Sounds like a great idea. So how did the two of you connect on this project?
JT: We’ve known each other for years from the Providence scene through Brendan’s work on The Rhode Show and my time at Providence Media. And everyone is aware of his encyclopedic knowledge of Seinfeld .
BK: She needed help from someone with a
pathetic knowledge of a 24-year-old sitcom.
JT: That, and I wanted his help incorporating comedy, and it’s a very specific kind of comedy.
BK: Seinfeld is still one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. It still remains a part of the culture.
HR: But you don’t necessarily think of food when you think of Seinfeld .
JT: Not at first. But there are so many food references in the show. So many food scenarios. My challenge was to figure out how to turn them into recipes.
BK: And my job was to make it funny. Seriously, though, if you look back, there are

so many conversations happening around food, whether it was in the diner or Jerry’s kitchen, from soup to nuts.
HR: Who is the book for? Who is your audience?
BK: The book is fun for hardcore fans and people who may not be as familiar with the show. The series has a real-world presence. It’s culturally significant and relatable. I watch it now – as an adult, I guess – and I understand it differently from when it first aired.
HR: I remember watching it on Thursday night and talking about it at work the next day. You assumed everyone in the office had seen it. Now, people are binge watching it, especially since COVID.
JT: Right. I think people watched all of Friends , then maybe all of The Office and were looking for something else to binge. They found Seinfeld either for the first time or all over again.
BK: The book is kind of like that for me, too. It seems like we wrote it so long ago and now it’s published and I’m seeing things I forgot about and I still think they’re really funny.
HR: Now that the book is out there, how do you feel about it? What has the response been like?
BK: Nervous. I love the show. I want passionate fans to love it.
JT: He was afraid that he would have to cook, really.
BK: I have an abject fear of cooking.
HR: Cooking is scary. I get that.
JT: The response has been great. We’ve been interviewed all over the country. People get the mass appeal of it.
BK: People really like it. What’s not to like? It’s a ride for your tastebuds.
